15 Best Restaurants in LA’s Sawtelle Japantown | Eater LA

"The family behind Fairfax’s longstanding Chao Krung opened Tuk Tuk Thai serving a mostly street food menu in early 2022. Find classic dishes like Isaan sour sausage and prik khing moo grob served in the small and cozy space. There’s also a streetside patio for al fresco dining." - Mona Holmes

1. The fried rice tasted delicious, and it was a good portion! 2. The spot has fun casual vibes since it is part of food hall! 3. The staff was friendly and timely with my order! It was ready in less than 10 mins! Note: The food hall does have a restroom area! Photo: Spicy Chicken Fried Rice and Thai Iced Coffee

I stayed at a nearby hotel and saw the food court on Google Maps. Said 9 min walk but was only about 4 minutes from Marriott. We ordered the Drunken Noodles (pad kee mao) with chicken. Ordered it spicy, and yes, it was spicy, lol. I loved it but was too much for my wife. Was spicy, but still great taste. Only gave the 4 stars for the atmosphere because its an outside food court. Has sun shade but nothing if it rains. Great place and good prices, especially for area.

Mama drunken noodle was amazing! Real Thai flavor. Warm, friendly service too. Can’t wait to return.

The lady at the counter was so nice. I ordered my food to go. I got chicken Thai fried rice, chicken pad Thai, Thai iced tea, and vegetable spring rolls. Wasn’t a complete fan of the pad Thai. Everything else was great. Will definitely be back

Google
Authentic Thai street food in Irvine!! We’ve been having their Pad Thai 3 days in a roll now. What do I have to say more? Our favorite ones are - Pad Thai (of course) - Kapow with crispy pork(add fried egg and ask for Prik nam pla 😉) - Crispy tofu (straight from the thai street) - Mama Drunken Noodles The lady taking orders is very nice and friendly.

Yelp
The food was amazing! I had the Pad Thai with shrimp. But when I got it, it had chicken. I went and told them I got the wrong order, the person there was so apologetic and rushed to get the right order! This place has great service and delicious, authentic Thai food! If you're in the area, you must go!!!!

Yelp
Tuk Tuk is located inside of TRADE Irvine dining hall. You'll notice their storefront right away because they have a little replica tuk tuk sticking out of the front of their counter! We ordered the Tom Yum Fried Rice with Chicken, Pad See Ew with Chicken, and Crispy Pork with Chinese Broccoli. I love a good Tom Yum Fried Rice! The tom yum herbs were so yummy. I also like that they include bell pepper, onions, cucumber, and lime for added texture and flavor. The Pad See Ew was good! Pretty straightforward. I really enjoyed the Crispy Pork dish! Definitely one of my all-time favorite Thai dishes, and they executed it well! They list two different prices for this on the menu. One includes rice and egg, and the other is if you want a full-size portion of the entree only. They give you a pager while you wait for your food, and it'll make a sound and vibrate when your order is ready. You can sit anywhere in the shared seating area inside TRADE.

Yelp
Tuk Tuk Street Food has become a casual lunch go-to for me when I'm craving Thai comfort food but still want protein options that don't feel like an afterthought. They let you pick your protein for most dishes -- chicken, tofu, crispy pork, crab, shrimp -- and I've cycled through a few, but tofu is the one I keep coming back to. Crispy pork is my guilty pleasure when I know I'm eating right away (because soggy pork skin? Emotional damage.). Most dishes you can choose how spicy you want it too! I've tried the pad see ew, fried rice, and yellow curry so far, and here's the breakdown: Yellow Curry - My personal fave. It's like a cozy blanket and a dance floor had a baby. Warm, rich, and perfect with tofu. I like mine with a little extra spice -- just enough to make your lips tingle but still let you taste everything. Fried Rice - It's kind of like a mood ring. Some days it hits the salty note just right, other days it leans a little heavy. But overall, solid and satisfying. Add crispy pork for a good time. Pad See Ew - A classic. Pretty standard execution, which isn't a bad thing when you want something familiar and filling. The noodles are chewy, the portion's fair, and the tofu soaks up sauce like a pro. Price-wise: I'll admit it feels a bit spendy for what you get (especially if you just get a side of tofu). But the convenience, customization, and consistency keep me coming back. Especially during lunch or after a bad day of work and I need a pick me up. I will 100% be back to try other dishes. Maybe the Tom Yum fried rice next? I've never had it, so it sounds super intriguing to me.

Yelp
Okay wow this Thai food was outrageously delicious. I was famished for lunch and my workplace got this delivered via DoorDash- we're right across the street. The food arrived warm and packaged well. I got the chicken pad Thai. The noodles and flavors blended beautifully with the lime squeeze on top. I couldn't stop eating it- just so delicious. I wish I took a photo of it but I'm sure I'll be back. My coworkers also enjoyed their meals.

Yelp
Always come here for lunch and get the chicken pad Thai. The parking lot can be busy sometimes but it's worth it. Great prices and food!

Yelp
Ordered DoorDash for lunch while traveling for work. Tuk Tuk was recommended to me by the hotel staff where I'm currently staying, and I was very happy with my pad see ew. I ordered a crispy pork belly pad see ew with extra chicken, and it was extremely filling and delicious. Like all delivery chances taken when ordering something crispy, some of the crispy fell victim to becoming a little soggy, but there were still plenty of pieces that were crispy, close to fresh off the fryer! Portions were also large for me, and the extra protein made a perfect 2nd meal. I would definitely be interested in coming to the restaurant to try more soon!

Yelp
Stopped by here for lunch yesterday. Had better luck with parking as most people are either off work this whole week or out-of-town from the holidays still. Anyhow, I got my favorite, chicken pad see ew with an extra egg. A bit of a wait but so well worth it. It was brought out piping hot and so delicious. While waiting, I was chatting with the cashier for a bit. It turned out, Tuk Tuk and Sen Noodles Bar have the same owner. If you had never eaten here, give them a try. You will not be disappointed. I am picky when it comes to Thai foods but I love it here, both restaurants in this small food court.

Yelp
My first time trying this place and I came by for lunch, so I ordered the Pad See Ew with tofu and surprisingly, it was very good! The Pad See Ew was flavorful and had a nice charred smokey taste to it from the wok fry which I really liked! Some places make the noodles bland, but this place seasoned it just right! Also, the tofu was very good; again, it had a nice smokey flavor and char to it from the wok fry and it was absolutely delicious. I would definitely come back here and order this dish again, or try other food items on the menu. Honestly, I didn't expect a small food court Thai place to be this good, but it's actually better than a lot of Thai restaurants I've been to. I ordered a Thai Iced Tea (which was just ok) and the order came to about $18 for lunch. Not cheap, but the food was good. Next time, I think I'll skip the Thai Iced Tea.

Yelp
Cute small place in a food court kind of area. It was raining the day I went so it was dead! The service was fast and friendly. I got the pad see ew and it was tasty. Portions were good for the size! I paid around $13 for a perfect lunch portion.

Yelp
This is the cutest little Thai place! very nice seating area and quick service. My friend and i tried the Drunken Noodles! very very tasty we got the spicy version of chicken and shrimp and enjoyed each bowl! the spring rolls were great quantity for the price and very crispy and flavorful at every bite! 10/10 would go again and WILL!

Yelp
We came and ordered the pad thai and drunken noodles. The food was pretty good. The pad thai noodles were thin which threw me off but flavors were great. There's alot of other restaurants nearby which is very convenient!!
google avatar

Yelp
Delicious!! While in Newport Beach for work, I was told this was a place to try within the outdoor eating area. There are several restaurants within this outdoor dining spot. Anyway the food was delicious. I got the shrimp pad see ew. It was well seasoned, fresh, and a good portion of food. The price was average and what you would expect for Thai food. Service was friendly and prompt. I would definitely try this place again.

Yelp
Located in the Trade Food Hall, I decided to try it out for a quick dinner. I ordered a tofu pad-see-ew and it came out pretty quick. The noodles were not overcooked, tofu was cooked well and it was tasteful. For the tofu, it was at a decent price. The other proteins were on the pricey side.

Yelp
I made a mistake by ordering the food at their location in Orange and I went for pick up in the Irvine location. The lady in Irvine location is so kind she gladly made the same food for me for free. Thank you, I appreciate your friendliness and kindness.

Yelp
As the name is , Street Food of Thailand ! Enjoyed their delicious, authentic food. Egg roll was fresh and you could tell they fresh oil to fry it. I enjoyed Spicy Crispy Pad Thai !

Yelp
Tuk Tuk Thai Street Food is absolutely delicious. The restaurant is located inside a shopping plaza next to The Center Hub bar. Very open spaces and the staff is just SO friendly. Their service is top notch! The food is so good too! This is 1 of 2 Thai food restaurants in this plaza. If you live in the Business District, THIS is your go-to Thai place!
google avatar

Emma F.

Yelp
Ordered takeout from their website, it was simple and easy! I liked that I was able to schedule ahead of time and food was ready to pick up. I was greeted cheerfully by the restaurant employee upon arrival. The pad thai was very goof, I liked that they used the thinner noodles and they were soft and chewy. I also got the crab fried rice which I was very happy that they included lots of crab meat in it. However, the fried rice itself was a bit lacking in flavor. Overall, a solid spot for Thai food!
google avatar

Nelson L.

Yelp
I ordered the pad thai and it was ok. Sauce was a little overwhelming. Quick service. Nice little food court with plenty of seating. Parking is a mess tho...
google avatar

Kayla H.

Yelp
Had a quick lunch here today and it was nice. The semi outdoor seating area makes it a lovely place to enjoy your lunch. The lady working the food stall was sweet and gave great service. The food came out pretty fast. The chicken drunken noodles were tasty and way better than I expected. I feel like food at food courts are usually decent but nothing special. This wasn't the case! The spice and flavor was there and there was a good amount of chicken too. I will be returning to try other things. Fun Fact: Sen Noodle Bar and Tuk Tuk have the same owners. I'll be trying out sen soon.

Moyura H.

Yelp
Fast & friendly service lots of crab in the fried rice tofu was crispy Thai tea was ok

Yelp
Food was very good! Easy no frills. Came here for quick grub, love this food court, not super busy on the weekends but still good variety. I've been wanting to try this chain restaurant out and the food was good. Ordered a chicken pad see eww, it was made fresh and didn't take long. The noodle was very fresh and cooked perfectly, soft but not soggy. The veggies were fresh. My only complaint was the chicken was overcooked and super dry. Other than that, the flavor was good. Parking was easy, the tables in the food court was dirty although that's no fault of the restaurant.

Yelp
I hoofed it from my hotel and noticed the parking lot is tight and no street parking but I believe the parking is free. This is a walk up counter eatery. No indoor dining. But, when in So-Cal, the great outdoors is FABULOUS year-round for dining. There is a plaza in the middle of about 10 different eateries. There's something for everyone including a most inviting bar eatery. The eating area has overhead cover so you should be able to avoid direct sunlight in your eyes. The service was great at Tuk Tuk. The lady let me nix bell peppers. Her recommendation was shrimp tom kha fried rice, $18ish. It was delicious! Had 7-8 large prawns. I read there were a couple of inspection violations but they passed their inspection and I don't regret my choice. Food was served quickly and in a stout paper bowl which I like. Being hungry there were no leftovers and that was fine with me. This is very good fast food Thai cuisine.
google avatar

Andrew T.

Yelp
I got the spicy thai fried rice with crispy pork, and it was fairly spicy, overall a good meal, but as far as fried rice goes, average to above average. I think what helped make it good was the crispy pork, but fried rice flavor was medium, lacked the "umami" I usually expect in Thai fried rice. My friends got curry and pad see ew, and also said it was "average". Convenient place with pretty easy access, so definitely give it a try.
google avatar

Tammie N.

Yelp
Slow service, rude woman at the cash register, food was worse than mediocre. Went to pick up my food with the beeper and said "Excuse me" and "Hi" three times because I assumed she couldn't hear me but then she turned around and angrily said "Just leave it!" Clearly heard me and chose to ignore instead. I understand that the orders can get overwhelming during a dinner rush but her service was unacceptable. To add insult to injury, the pad thai did NOT taste good. It was mushy and flavorless. Overall- go to literally any other food stand in that court.
google avatar

Bhumika S.

Yelp
Pretty good food in a little food court area. I usually get their fried rice and honestly never disappointing. This time though I got a few chilis in the spicy fried rice that I was NOT prepared for (i thought they were bell peppers) and man was I glad I got some thai tea. It was still good and I was glad that it was actually spicy just not expecting it haha (so just a heads up). Pineapple fried rice was really good too! And there's tons of seating within the food court as well!
google avatar

Rick S.

Yelp
Fast, delicious and authentic Thai food. Service was quick in less than 10 minutes. Staff were friendly and personable in making recommendations. Ambiance is cozy, open-air and loud food court. Come early as parking can be challenging to find.
google avatar

Fresh M.

Yelp
Had this spot bookmarked for a couple months and was totally craving noodles and I'm so glad I came here to try it out! Best pad Thai I've had in a while. Fresh ingredients and tasty. Good sized portion. Customer service was good too . I also tried the Thai iced coffee which was good but a bit too strong for my taste. Ambiance is not bad cafeteria setting but it's cute and clean restrooms. I'll be back for the pad Thai for sure
google avatar

Daph H.

Yelp
Tuk Tuk Thai is located inside the TRADE Food Hall, serving traditional dishes like pad see ew, pad kee mao, fried rice and curries. We placed our order online for pad see ew with tofu ($12) and pad kee mao with tofu ($12). The servings were quite generous. My daughter managed to split hers into two meals, but I enjoyed my pad see ew so much that I devoured the entire thing. My husband likewise finished off his pad kee mao. Bumping my review up to five stars just because of the healthy portions and fair price. Tuk Tuk Thai is inside TRADE Food Hall. There's is an atrium area with lots of seating. The biggest challenge is trying to find parking in the lot. It's the one place in Irvine that doesn't have enough parking to meet demand!
google avatar

Hema K.

Yelp
This was my second time checking out Tuk tuk. We ordered their Tom yum fried rice with shrimp($16) and pad kee mao with chicken($12). The portion size was horribly small compared to what you pay. Service was quick and it took about 15 minutes for the food to be ready. The fried rice was overly greased. I should have stuck to my regulars instead of trying something new. With the 90 minute parking and overly priced, I think this is enough for me =D
google avatar

Serena Y.

Yelp
Okay I don't like giving out anything below 3 just because I know it's not easy operating a food business and making sure each customer is satisfied. However is review is ONLY based off of the food chicken pad Thai (which they got my order wrong I wanted the shrimp) but maybe it was a blessing I got chicken as it was $2 cheaper than shrimp. Service was okay nothing super amazing just meh average. Chicken pad Thai: know that there are DRIED SHRIMP in there so if you are allergic to shrimp or have a shellfish allergy just keep that in mind. The portion size was decent but the reason why i personally won't be returning is because it was SO SWEET. Like I know pad Thai is usually on the sweeter side. However, this was overkill like felt as if I was just eating sugar. Just a bit disappointed because the reviews were raving how authentic it was and it was the bed Thai food place they had. Well I'm here to tell you sadly save your money go somewhere else or you can choose to IGNORE me and give this place a try yourself. Just don't be like me and regret it
google avatar

Sara Y.

Yelp
Ordered this place on DoorDash. The food was not good at all. They used spaghetti noodles in the pad Thai. There was no flavor in the pad Thai or pad see ew. We will be throwing away our huge portion of left overs.
google avatar

David D.

Yelp
I really enjoyed myself sitting in the outdoor food courtyard on an 80 degree California evening eating Drunken Noodles. And BTW: People keep asking me this?: No, Drunken Noodles does not get you drunk!--there is no alcohol in it. You can drive fine afterwards. Okay! And the Tuk Tuk Drunken Noodles had lots of fresh cut vegetables in it--love that! Maybe put some more peppers in it--can never have enough green or red peppers. They give you lot's of chicken too and noodles. It's a good value at $12 these days. Is the the best Thai I ever had? No. But it's fine. It was the food and atmosphere that made it great. Food comes out FAST! I love this hidden shopping center they are in, free easy parking, safe location. Come here with whoever or alone or if you are staying in one of the many local hotels and want a quality inexpensive meal: Perfect!
google avatar

Margarita M.

Yelp
Even though this food is takeout and you're not necessarily eating it right out of the kitchen it is amazing. The variety of flavors the availability of heat is incredible. I've been here three times and I've never been disappointed. Try the crab fried rice it is bomb.
google avatar

Greg M.

Yelp
Consistently good! Chicken pad Thai with Thai iced tea is my standard order. Cheers!
google avatar

Sara N.

Yelp
Great yellow curry, just the right spicy level, good flavor, good portion of veggies and shrimp, great service. And love this location at The Trade (like an outdoor food court with partial shade)! Will definitely be back

Justin T.

Yelp
First time trying thai food and damn this place is good. Their spicy fried rice imo nailed the spicy and flavor balance really well. Pineapple fried rice and pad see ew taste excellent also. Would highly recommend trying this place if around the area
google avatar

A T.

Yelp
Absolutely awful overpriced 'Thai' food. Have a strong feeling that the 4 and 5 star reviews are coming from UCI students who might not have had proper Thai food before. My dish for example had burnt cashews in it which indicates a total lack of care or concern for making the dishes as it is extremely difficult to burn cashews. In addition the owner or proprietor at this location is very dismissive of customers. Best to head further north to Fountain Valley for better Thai options.
google avatar

Aurora L.

Yelp
Pad see ew was perfect! Pad Thai was too sweet, had to add soy sauce and hot sauce to balance it out. Yellow curry was bomb! Service was great. I'd def come back to try other dishes :P

Yelp
Tuk Tuk is in a Trade Food Hall in Irvine super cute little spot with crafty things to look at and buy. There are quite a few choices in this food hall but what caught my eye was the smallish menu for Thai food and the cute look of the front - and they have stand up sign with a really nice review written about the food. So being a Thai food lover I was like this is me.. and my friends followed we were not disappointed. 1) chicken fried rice now that was the blandest of the 3 dishes but still good- she's a less adventurous girls so she was very happy, I love they the chicken is sliced and not cubed it was moist and tender and had alot of flavor. 2) chicken Pad Thai was lovely there was a lot of colors in this meal and lot of flavors - it was very good. 3) Tofu Pad See Ew .. was the best the tofu was perfect cooked nice little char on the outside without being tough or burnt - tender on the inside when you bite thru the oodles were fat and there was just so much flavor. The only thing Tuk Tuk did not do that I found odd was they'd didn't not ask us how "spicy" there everything had no heat - so our food was all a little bit sweet , I missed the kick to my meals. This is a really good place and recommend door dashing or picking up to go but I would get some hot sauce or remember to as them to " kick it up a notch" The gal that took our order could not have been sweeter she recommended the pad see ew and she was right! Thank you.

VK N.

Yelp
Food is good, usually came here with my coworkers. But we haven't come back here lately, every time we order the cashiers always stare at the screen to see if we are adding tips or not. Makes us feel pressure that we have to tip them.
google avatar

Morgan T.

Yelp
Tuk Tuk Thai has been in my saved bookmarks for longer than i care to admit as one of the "i want to try on my lunch break" places when im at the office and it did not disappoint! I love Thai food and don't often buy lunch when at work however as the day before a holiday "beep beep" i was on my way! I like the open / courtyard concept, the cute car decor where you order and the accessibility- i didn't realize how close to the airport/offices near there it is! The food was really good- i got the chicken pad Thai (which i was slightly hesitant based on how the chicken looked in the pictures) but the pad Thai noodles had so much flavor that the relatively unseasoned chicken pieces were of no consequence. I love the amount of bean sprouts you get as well for the crunch factor and the portion is very decent! As i saw mentioned the parking is a little chaotic but once i parked i walked in, picked up and was out (pre ordered online) in less than 5 min! There was a lot of people enjoying their lunch in the courtyard it was very busy around 12pm on Wed (even before a holiday) ! I'll definitely be back to enjoy again!
google avatar

Matt H.

Yelp
Good fast Thai food. I get the noodles with tofu and I like the fact that they use Chinese broccoli instead of the American style. I get it 'white guy hot' which is plenty hot without blowing my head clean off.

Tiana N.

Yelp
We ordered 5 entrees to be delivered. It wasn't deserving of 3 stars let alone 5 Crab fried rice was wet mixed rice with very fishy crab meat. Chewed gum after a few bites to get rid of the fishy smell. My siblings all ended up adding spices to our dishes; too bland and just blah We only tried this place due to the stars given in previous reviews but highly disappointed
google avatar

Gregory L.

Yelp
I wanted to like this place but it was again disappointing. We got a fried rice, curry, and pad thai. Curry 1/5: watery, lacking spices, overall disappointingly bland. Compare with Siam Station it's night and day Fried Rice 2.5/5: clumpy / soggy, lacking flavor, fried tofu bland Pad Thai 3/5: okay flavor but abysmal, non chewy texture Thai ice tea: 5/5 hard to go wrong here but hit the spot Overall, disappointing especially the watery curry. Won't be going back unfortunately
google avatar

Brock S.

Yelp
Best Pad Thai I've had. Best crab fried rice I've had. I've been here twice and got the same thing twice because it was so good. Exploring the menu more next time. The spot is in a somewhat outdoor food hall...this is the place with the line, but if you go on a weekday before 12 noon, you should only wait 10 minutes. The cashier wasn't overly friendly, but the food was good enough for me to not worry about service. FYI, this is a grab and go shop, but you can eat in the courtyard

Brianna J.

Yelp
AWFUL THAI SPOT. they'll send you extremely old, cold food because you're ordering delivery. So shocked by how gross it was.

Yelp
I love my Tom Yum dishes. I typically use it as the main dish to rate any Thai place I have been to. Therefore, I had to try the Tom Yum Fried Rice with Crispy Pork! 1. Serving size: I would say for a smol female Asian adult like me, this is equivalent to 2.5 meals. The dish remains flavorful, if not more savory, even if you eat the left overs for a later meal. 2. Toppings: I do not like it when I eat a fried rice dish and it seems like the amount of meat and other toppings aren't enough for the rice. Their Tom Yum Fried Rice definitely had a good amount of meat and veggies that It didn't feel like I had to save the meat for last just to make sure I don't have just rice by the end of the meal. They honestly serve a good amount of meat vs. Some thai places I have been to. 3. Taste: Tom Yum should have a very powerful aroma and taste, and I love mine as aromatic as it gets. Tuktuk's version is the epitome of this. Every bite is just full of flavor and it isn't too greasy too so you don't get tired of the taste fast! 4. Meat: The meat was cooked to the best crispy level that even the skin was just sooo crunchy!!! The slices are on the thinner side (which I like) which makes the meat crispy! They do not give meat that's just full of fat slices (which I know some places do to save money). They are very generous with the meat. Overall, I would say Tuktuk is among the Top 3 Thai Places on my list. Would definitely want to try their other dishes like Pad Thai next time!

Jamie D.

Yelp
It was a very nice Kaprow that I had; they adjust spiciness, which I like because other Thai places are either not spicy enough or they bring in the heat full on. So I like that.

Yelp
Our family has been regular customers of Tuk Tuk. We have always been satisfied with the quality of their food, which has consistently met our expectations. However, our recent visit left us quite disappointed. The tofu in our padseeew was burnt and emitted a rather unpleasant odor, marring the overall taste of the dish. Concerned about this experience, we promptly contacted the restaurant by phone and left a detailed message explaining our dissatisfaction. We wanted to provide constructive feedback to help them maintain the high standards they are known for. However, our phone call was never returned. We will not return to the place.
