How a New Orleans Pastry Chef Found Her Calling for Surrealist Cakes | Eater New Orleans

"I report that Wyatt graduated from Tulane University with a degree in visual art, a background she says informs her cake-making approach even as she frames it more as craft than fine art." - Clair Lorell

Very happy my kids picked Tulane! We have had a wonderful experience here even traveling from Chicago to visit multiple times. The dorms are fantastic as well as the off campus living. The school itself is amazing I feel that it has set both my kids up for a prosperous future.

I went here so I do have some thoughts. Graduated in 4 years, no mean feat in a town with as many distractions as New Orleans. To me, going to school in here felt a bit like Pinocchio might have when on the first day he was heading to school and got distracted to Donkey Island instead, with all its gaudy joys. Plus, my four years coincided with the protests and conflicts over the Vietnam War, civil and women's rights, MLK and RFK assassinations ... lots going on in the world around us. At times classes were disrupted by protests on Tulane's campus and the term called off a month early in 1970, just after the shootings at Kent State. I remember going to Washington DC to participate in the national protest going on then. I will say Tulane did present me with the opportunity to learn quite a bit and I did occasionally take advantage of that. Many of us who went there know we learned how to party and how to stop. Otherwise, there is no way we are graduating in four years, if at all.

I have been to several hall and venues within the Tulane University's campus. Every place has been amazing. The students, the staff, - all are welcoming.

It is amazing to visit Tulane as always. Thank you for treating my daughter so well.

Google
Tulane University is an absolute gem! The campus is breathtakingly beautiful, blending modern facilities with historic charm seamlessly. Walking through the campus feels like exploring a vibrant community filled with lush greenery and stunning architecture at every turn. I think what truly sets Tulane apart is its connection to the vibrant culture of New Orleans. The fusion of academia with the rich local culture creates an unparalleled experience for students. I had the pleasure of visiting during parents' weekend, and it was an incredible immersion into university life. The energy, the warmth, and the hospitality of both the faculty and students were remarkable. The city's influence on campus life is palpable, enhancing the overall educational journey. Tulane University not only offers top-notch education but also celebrates diversity and embraces the spirit of New Orleans, making it a truly exceptional place to learn and grow.

Yelp
My experience was wonderful. As we return to campus year after year, it is evident that things are changing. I also know Tulane can't fill seats solely on Louisiana residents, so catering to the Wack Coast is unavoidable. The shift to toxicity, aggression, and the immaturity of attention seeking weirdness, over academia and higher learning, is pervasive. It hangs in the air like sewer gas. We do our best to see the positive and light, so we hold tightly to the olive and blue - and hope it's just a trend and that the cancer doesn't spread and take hold. Hear us now, oh Tulane, hear us, as we proudly sing to thee. Take from us our hearts devotion, thine we are and thine shall be.

Yelp
My wife and I decided to check out the architecture of various buildings and campus since we were visiting the Audubon across the street. We enjoyed our sight seeing of this nice campus.

Yelp
I didn't go here as a student, but I did get to watch my sister grow and flourish here for four years. The campus is stunning and the culture is super unique-- they really embrace the fact that the students are young adults. They don't overly police the students. They make space for mistakes and learning from them. They embrace the chaos and high energy that the students bring. I love it. Students need this space. And they clearly love the school president for how he runs the school. They all cheered and chanted for him more than any other person at graduation. The 2023 Graduation Ceremony was next level. Fireworks, incredible speakers, flags, sparkly umbrellas-- it felt like a true CELEBRATION. Of diversity, of maturation, of moving through challenges, of creating a better future. As a 2020 grad who did not receive a graduation ceremony from my alma mater, this was really inspiring and fulfilling to be a part of. Thank you Tulane for taking such wonderful care of my sister, and for continuing to education the next generation of leaders.

Yelp
Call In New Orleans we decided to visit Tulane University. We walked around the campus and visited the bookstore. The grounds were beautiful and we enjoyed the open campus. It was a fun experience. There was lots to see.

Yelp
I went to a beautiful recital of a great pianist Lera Auerbach. She was playing at Dixon Concert Hall/Newcomb Department of Music. We all got a chance to hear Mussorgsky's Pictures At An Exhibition and her own composition Labyrinth inspired by Borges. I rarely get a chance to sit on the other side of the stage, it felt very nice to be an audience and enjoy beautiful music. Chairs were very comfortable, but rows are very narrow, so not much leg room. It's hard to see what's going on on the stage if somebody tall is siting in front of you. Most performances don't have assigned seats, so choose your seat wisely - no tall people in front :) There are only two small bathrooms on the 1st floor by Dixon Hall, which usually creates long lines in the intermission and/or after a concert.

Yelp
An amphitheater would enhance the experience, but other than that, it's great! I attended here for four years and had a positive, dynamic, supportive, colorful time. The trees bring a special sense of soul to the campus. Thanks Tulane! Xoxo sab

Yelp
I have been here on several occasions. A friend of mine is an alumni, and I have come with him for a Tulane's Got Talent event, a production by the drama department and a few other events. My most recent visit was for the Armistad Research Center whose mission is to document the voices of minorities and their contributions to society as a whole. I look forward to coming to other events here, as well as making an appointment to see some of the exhibit at the Armistad Research Center. Great university, great contributions to the community.

Yelp
A solid rec center for the Tulane University campus! Not only are there a few spots to grab food but you also have an on-campus Barnes & Noble Student Center. As I've been coming here for meetings, I've had a chance to explore the grounds a little bit more. I've found a few atm machines from different banks including Chase and Capitol One, fedex shipping center, plenty of community tables and lounge areas, and a few bathroom options. It looks like they got brand new furniture for this building because everything has been swapped out. Solid spot but only wish they had a dedicated coffee shop in here.

Yelp
Tulane is a wonderful University with a great campus. Although I'm not a student, I have several family members who are alumni. Tulane partners with my kid's grade school to host performances throughout the year. Dixon Hall is a very accommodating facility that offers a nice space for our school performances. The arena style seating assures good acoustics and optimal viewing of the stage. Tulane also partners with our school to offer free tutoring.

Yelp
Being a New Orleans Native. I've always known where Tulane University was. But now that my son is a junior in high school. It's about that time to start looking for his school of choice. But as a mother I know what's best right lol This amazing school was not on my son's list. But I signed him up to do the walk through as a family. We did and he loved it until he seen the price. I explained to my son that you should definitely not look at the price and look at what this school has to offer. It's a very hugr campus with all types of nationalities. But still my son was stuck on the price. My advice to you if you are deciding to travel to New Orleans to check out this college is to check it out more than once. You will fall in love with the students the staff in the culture of New Orleans Louisiana. It's definitely more than just food, music and southern hospitality.

Yelp
Really felt welcomed on our campus tour. Very scenic and easy walk from one end to the other. The St. Charles trolley stopped directly in front of campus, so transportation around the city is easy as well. The only downside, as college campuses go is that the dorms are mostly old and worn looking.

Isabelle C.

Yelp
The faculty and staff are very rude. They do not help with anything you will need them for. They are extremely disrespectful and don't have any empathy. They do not care about your health.

Yelp
Tulane has a beautiful campus very close to downtown New Orleans. It has a cute trolly train system which makes it easy to get to shops, restaurants, events, and parades. The housing at Tulane was really great in my experience and they had very modern buildings mixed with classic southern architecture. My professors were very knowledgeable and kind and the students all were work-hard play-hard but down-to-earth.

Yelp
WOW - what a beautiful campus filled with friendly people in one of the most interesting cities in the world. I'm so impressed that they are so service-oriented, and hold students to such a high academic standard. We went for a campus visit for prospective students, and I've come away with a great appreciation for the staff and faculty, as well as the long-term donors and those who support the college with large gifts. If I could do it all over again, I'd choose to come to school here - what a great place!

Yelp
Roll wave roll! What makes going to Tulane great: Jewish holidays off- shalom! Spring break and Mardi Gras Break Break for Jazz Fest Crawfish Boils Mild winters - who doesn't love tanning in February? Oh yeah, a well-recognized school brand name also helps too.

Yelp
Tulane as a workplace is fantastic: beautiful setting and grounds, proximity to the St Charles streetcar line, and across the street from all that Audubon Park has to offer. The students are smart and friendly for the most part, and the faculty and staff seem the same. The campus is small enough to be easily walkable, so please keep your bikes off of the sidewalks! The exercise and fresh New Orleans air will do you good.

Yelp
For my 400th review, I figured, I should write about what brought me to New Orleans: graduate school at Tulane University School of Architecture. I've heard of many nostalgic stories of Tulane Pre-K, and how its so wrong now. But let me be nostalgic now, and tell you all the great things that I was able to do. * I was able to learn in theory and practice what architecture is. How many other students will have practical experience when they graduate? * Literally leave a trail of blood behind. Super glue will put your hand back together if you cut yourself. * I learned how to use a LOT of power tools. Grinder, saws-all, table saw, drill press, etc. (some other kid got to learn where the closest hospital was.) * Football games in the Superdome. * The friends that I made. * They let me graduate. Since graduation, I'm jealous of all the things the new students are getting: like a soon to be renovated building, a new football stadium, a CNC machine, and expanded 3D print shop. No, this isn't a cheap school, and nothing's perfect, but you are getting your bang for your buck. I'm not exaggerating when I say there were many sleepless nights, loss of blood, sweat being sweat, and tears shed, but I would do it all over again in a heart beat.

Yelp
Worked one on one with Reda Amer...completely dumbfounded by sense of reasoning. Do yourself a favor...reconsider Tulane , go to LSU. A complete disappointment. I agree with other posts "Staff is absolutely Terrible, rude, unfriendly and seem pretty miserable. Wait times on the phone have been over 25 mins every time I call the office directly. Front desk girl could give two shits about any patient." Have called numerous times looking for my results and still no one has returned my phone calls

Yelp
You'd think that the braintrust at McAllister (oh wait, that road ain't there no more... is it?) and Freret would understand the importance of a School of Engineering, especially in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. After the damage to so much infrastructure I'm sure the city could have put structural, mechanical, and civil engineers to good use. But noooooo, Herr Cowen, in his infinite wisdom, decided to CLOSE the school of engineering. Pure brilliance. The gripes with my alma mater don't end there (though the end of engineering is my main one). There've been so many near-sighted decisions: dissolving Newcomb, withdrawing from the SEC and tearing down Tulane Stadium, covering up McAllister Drive, a seeming indifference towards local applicants, and on and on. It's a damn shame. The school could rank ahead of Rice, Emory, or any other "Harvard of the South," if only they could get out of their own way.

Yelp
I credit this school for: a) instilling in me a love of dance. They have a spacious studio above the Oaks with top to bottom windows. Instructor Beverly Trask is my hero. b) its aesthetics of a green quad, red brick building campus feel while I studied away my days. c) helping a once shy girl like me get her nose out of a book and be a social butterfly, having certainly met friends for life here. d) having such a rich history. Every now and then I'd run across black and white photo archives of students in the 1920s, 1960s, and even 80s seeming to have the best time of their lives. The naysayers may just dismiss this fine institution as a "party school," but that's only just seeing one on the surface element of this unique place. I met underground radio types and community service involved students that went on to do Teach for America and Peace Corps. I wear my Tulane t-shirt with pride and I get annoyed when it's falsely assumed students just came here to have fun. We played hard, and many of us worked harder! :) The silly, yet meaningful things I remember about this school are that: bizzarely enough, the otherwise very subpar Bruff Cafeteria had great breakfasts (biscuits, scrambled eggs, grits). Yum! And it was never hard to get space to play on its sunny tennis courts. I heart you, Tulane. Hail to thee, o alma mater. To read more about positive undergraduate Tulane memories and how indebted I feel to this school, ranging from its career services to how much it values its alumni back, check out this out: http://ihearttulanealumnistories.blogspot.com/

Yelp
To be honest this review is just based on walking around campus for an hour while visiting the area. That being said I found it to be a beautiful and friendly campus. As we walked I found the grounds and buildings to be well maintained. We saw several security guards walking the area as well, and they were friendly and said hello. Not being from the area I found the "Mardi Gras Tree" to be mildly fascinating, the number of beads in that tree was astounding, what a fun tradition! If you have some time and are in the area, it's a nice place to go and walk around.

Yelp
Tulane is the engine that drives the local economy. Without Tulane, post K New Orleans would be an emaciated lost soul of a city. It ain't cheap, and the undergrads can be (but aren't always) a stereotype consistent of Northeast descent. Their programs and varying levels of academia do wonders, though I understand the pay is mediocre. All in all, the campus is amazing and constantly improving and even the campus radio station 91.5 has an amazing history all its own.

Morgan L.

Yelp
Great school! Great art program! Love the staff and the campus is amazing! I would send my kids here for sure. I feel safe about the decision and I was a little nervous about New Orleans but totally love Tulane.

Poppy C.

Yelp
It is very good because my son got into it. It is small but the buildings inside are pretty nice. I don't know about the food yet, but overall it's a spacious,

Yelp
I love going through campus on my runs and bike rides. It's nice both in the morning, when there is no one out there except ROTC, and in the evening, when students and professors are bustling about. The scenery is nice in more ways than one.

Yelp
I never attended school at Tulane but I did play rugby many times for the Tulane team during my university years. Tulane always had smaller players but they were very well coached and certainly exceeded expectations in most games. Tulane also is pretty awesome for having a bar on campus, The Boot, where I spent many wayward times during rugby parties, Carnival time and various other times. Tulane has unfortunately seemed to have grown into a majority Yankee institution and I hope they begin to increase their enrollment of Southern folks and especially native NOLA folks. They have recently completed a really nice football stadium and that has definitely improved the college atmosphere and game day spirit of Tulane but I'm a tad peeved that their tailgate grounds have taken over my rugby pitch. I'm glad Tulane is rekindling some traditions but I've spilled plenty of blood on the old Tulane rugby pitch and I hate to see any rugby pitch get re-purposed.

Yelp
Southern Ivy, very reminiscent of Ivy campuses up north. Lovely campus and buildings (sep med school downtown; also Loyola Law shares this campus block) in stately garden district uptown area away from French Quarter, new dorms for comfort of students (def need a/c! bring sunscreen and rainwear frequent rain/storms due to insane humidity 97% and can burn in 15minutes: try coolibar for a sun hoodie etc to help, will need serious sun protection), good research programs for interns etc. my son doing biomedical chemical summer program. Dining Plan not supposed to be the best acc to students but plenty of cafes on camps including Starbucks, many restaurants in area (Crepe one popular on Broadway) plus most dorms have their own kitchens. Kids can hop the trolley (St Charles trolley runs up and down the main street outside from campus down to downtown 3-5m away) to nearby The Fresh Market and get all they need to whip up their own or to one of the thousands of restaurants in the area. Get them a trolley pass online at NORTA gomobile app. They also provide a campus shuttle look up that schedule, plus uber avail. Uber Eats also avail for food delivery. if need to stay in area, stay at Park View Guest House a Victorian BnB across the street from campus at St Charles and Walnut, adjacent to Audubon park. one of the few places near campus and the best, also free parking ($40+/nite everywhere else), free bfast, and on trolley line; won't need a car at all. All in all, reminds me of Yale. Good school, near a downtown so just go down take a bit to get oriented. but if you dont mind the heat, just fine!

Yelp
Beautiful campus. I am a School of Continuing Studies student. This is a great program the school offers. I am getting my BA in paralegal studies. They have night and weekend classes at the Elmwood campus. This semester I am on the main campus which I love. That's what is so great about this program. I can take select courses with all of the "regular" students. I missed out on the college experience having gone to community college for a brief time and then marrying young. Granted, this isn't the full on experience, but I am enjoying it thoroughly. Thanks, Tulane, for the excellent opportunity!

Yelp
I love to visit college campuses all over the nation. I feel blessed to have been on the campus of most of the major college and universities. I have visited Duke, UVA, Vandy, Harvard, Columbia, Emory, Northwestern and now Tulane. Tulane has a very nice campus in Uptown New Orleans on St. Charles Av in one of the nicer parts of the city. New Orleans is one of my fav tourist destinations, I love coming here because of the food and the people. The people of New Orleans have a spirit and a zest to life that not many other parts of the US do. Tulane has a lot of students from the Northeast and the Midwest but still feels like a Southern school. I love visiting Tulane its an amazing campus and a great place to go to college. I would recommend it.

Yelp
visiting NOLA this past week, and decided to swing by Tulane. wasn't expecting it to be as gorgeous as it was, so props for that. def had a little mini photo shoot out front! strolled across campus though, and couldnt help but realize how 'vanilla' it was... the school could definitely work on its diversity...

Yelp
It would have been a 5 star rating if it weren't for the recent cuts President Cowen Made. Bring Back Tulane Engineering!

Jane H.

Yelp
Tulane has been good to me. In the past four years, I've had some amazing professors and really enjoyed living in this neighborhood. Sure, there are a few (tenured) bad apples, but choose your courses wisely and you'll end up with great classmates and great professors. The same goes for service learning-- some of the options are a little out there, but if you choose the good ones it won't be a waste of time. That said, one of the biggest reasons I love Tulane is that I'm here on a full-tuition scholarship. If you're choosing between Tulane and a state school and they're priced pretty much the same, think about which one will fit your interests the best. If you get a full scholarship, come here. If you aren't getting any scholarship money from the school, don't come here, it's not worth the sticker price when you can have a great experience at a public university.

Jasmine D.

Yelp

Yelp
My friend is still waiting after months and month. Smart and AMAZiNG. If you don't respond soon and accept her it's mean and ur dumb because she deserves it. #lame #annoying

Yelp
Cool campus, but nothing amazing. I decided to visit for the day while in New Orleans for vacation. The overall architecture was alright in some areas, but bland in others. It's a good college though and hope that most of the emphasis is placed on studying anyway.

Christina M.

Yelp
Beautiful campus. Amazing city. Never tasted food this good before. Renowned university. Strongest academic university in the state of Louisiana BY FAR. Really great division 1 beach volleyball team!! Roll wave.

Yelp
They do have a nice campus right next to Loyola and the people are nice and friendly (minus the ones that are snobby and think they are better than others, which includes some staff members). They have a gym, nice places to eat, and the campus is peaceful. However, you WILL get your exercise by walking on this campus. To get a parking permit, it costs a lot of money, which I wasn't going to pay, so it was better to find a side street to park, which is free (one of the best things in life). Also, to bust that stereotype, not everyone on this campus is rich. There are ways to get into this school without having a big load of money. I did not find their programs to be anymore difficult or easier than any other school, personally. It was a nice school to go to, but do not think that going to this school will make finding a job easier for you, so don't think that spending a lot of money here will improve your chances. You are on your own. I don't know about others, but when people viewed my resume, they either got mad (jealousy due to stereotypes that they have that people who went there are rich )or were like, ''Oh you went there, That's nice''. The end.
