Yelp
While enjoying and extended stay in Idaho's wood river valley, I wanted to go beyond the traditional local favorite restaurants, which offer plenty of character but sometimes, due to their popularity, tend to fall short on quality and service. Based on the high ratings of a couple of other Yelp recommendations, we decided to give Tundra a try. After a call to verify seating and a short drive from the Ketchum area, we were greeted by the owner, Joel, who sat us in one of their Covid 19 spaced outdoor tables. From our attentive server, Dawson, we ordered a nice bottle of Pouilly Fume from the well stocked wine bar, which was kept cool in a bucket of ice hung from the side of our table. We started with some "small" plates, a very fresh and flavorful halibut crisp, composed of halibut "sashimi" and fesh vegetables which included avocado, cucumber and I believe zucchini, all pressed into a half-dome mound. As a second appetizer selection we sampled a couple of very tasty fried cauliflower patties, bright yellow from what I assume was a turmeric mixture. Both went well with the wine. Moving to the main course, we both ordered a special dish, grilled halibut over a lemon flavored risotto, which in turn was laid over a bed of artichoke hearts. The halibut was excellent, flaky and moist, and the risotto was well prepared, al dente, nice and creamy, showing it hadn't been sitting around like so many risotto dishes are served. We also enjoyed a small side dish of wild mushrooms to accompany the risotto dish which added a bit of variation bite by bite, on demand. Just to note Dawson was extremely attentive throughout our meal, visiting our table regularly to make sure everything was just right. Despite being pretty satiated from the dinner, we decided to split a piece of locally sourced carrot cake, gluten free, created by a talented local pastry chef. It was super moist and was one of the best I've had outside of my wife's own home made recipe. All in all, this was a positively delightful experience from the food, prepared by a talented chef, to the service of an attentive front line staff. I'd not hesitate to return to Tundra, in Hailey, for a special delicious meal next time I'm in Sun Valley and it's environs.
