In a mostly empty restaurant, we were taken to the back, away from everyone, and seated in the bar area, facing the TVs. We figured we were seated there because the bartender needed to keep busy.
All four of us received dishes that were heavy, breaded, greasy, and indifferently prepared. The "smothered" chicken wasn't smothered. It was fried chicken on a few spoonfuls of milk gravy.
The single worst thing about the experience was that my shrimp and grits arrived with undercooked shrimp. I thought, NO WAY is that shrimp gray--I must be seeing things. So, I tried to eat it anyway.
The grits underneath were probably at least half cheese--very heavy--and the sautéed veggie layer was SWIMMING in pools of grease. After eating less than half, I gave up because it was all too much.
I make shrimp and grits at home and have had great shrimp and grits in the south, but that greasy, cheesy mess was NOT okay. My daughter noticed I wasn't eating much and tasted my dish to try it out. The next day, we BOTH were SICK. I had it worse, because I ate more of the undercooked shrimp. I had food poisoning symptoms (you can imagine--I'll spare you the deets), and my daughter had hives--giant, itchy, raised welts all over her body. We both had to get OTC medicine to help with our symptoms.
Believe me, that is not the way you want to spend two days of a nine-day vacation. Sick from the food served at a restaurant. We will definitely not be returning to Tupelo Honey and would not recommend it to anyone.
