7 Best Ice Cream and Gelato Shops in Charleston | Eater Carolinas

"Charleston’s only ice cream shop dedicated to soft serve, Turbo Cone offers swirls of sweet nostalgia. It offers classic flavors like vanilla, chocolate, and strawberry but also pineapple, mango, and banana. Toppings range from hot caramel to cheesecake bites." - Erin Perkins

Google
Turbo cone offered dozens of toppings as well as several non-traditional twist flavors such as pineapple/vanilla! Non-dairy options were also available in addition to flavored dips. Plenty of seating in the shade was also available as well as parking. After several ice cream stops on our vacation, Turbo Cone was absolutely our favorite! Staff were friendly and quick even on busy, hot days! Ice cream cones are also served with a plastic cone cover to prevent dripping ice cream from reaching your clothes! Worth the stop!

Google
Lots of flavors and fun toppings- waffle bowls, dips and mixes. Lots of parking and outdoor seating

Google
Turbo cone could possibly be the greatest invention on earth, when that ice cream hits your lips it takes you to a very happy place with rainbows and unicorns. The hurricone is to die for. A large amount of delicious soft serve for an amazing price. Factor in all the toppings, and you have a dream come true. Thank you for your service turbo cone. (Please stay open later I want ice cream at midnight!)

Google
This is my absolute favorite place to get ice cream in Charleston. I love how you can get dairy free options and how there are so many different mix-ins for whatever mood you are in. The kids that work here really seem to have fun and care about their jobs. It’s just always a really good experience!

Google
My new favorite ice cream place in South Carolina! The Hurricone was amazing, it was loaded with toppings from top to bottom just how I like it. The soft serve itself was great as well. There’s a shaded seating area with clean tables and fans overhead. Clean bathrooms too! I loved the music as well, the only thing I would add would be neon lights lining the pavilion to add to the retro vibes. I feel like that would look super cool at night. Exceeded my expectations, 10/10 will come back!

Google
So happy that there is a soft serve ice cream place in Charleston that has lasted! Classic soft serve ice cream with other options as well such as milkshakes and slushees. Cheap ice cream outing for the family as well unlike some other ice cream places in Charleston. Two adults and two kids we can get ice cream for around $20.

Google
Don’t trust their hours!!!! Closed at 9:24 on a Thursday night. Drove out of our way after dinner for soft serve. Awful.

Google
I should have read the reviews before I went. The owner, being argumentative is a huge red flag. I would be willing to bet the owner is a Yankee, judging by the rude comments. I suggest you be kinder to customers, and learn some southern hospitality. The soft serve is sub par, for such a high price. It doesn’t have much taste. There is a Dairy Queen within 5 miles on Folly Road, which has more options, better tasting ice cream, and much better customer service. I will not be back.

Yelp
Got a PB&J shake late at night and it was the best one I've had in a long time! Highly recommended for a late night treat!

Yelp
Who doesn't love a soft-serve ice cream cone? Turbo's got that and more. I had a choco-vanilla twist in a waffle cup, and could've had soft serve mango or a mix-in mash, milkshake, and more. I enjoyed my cup under the roof of their outdoor seating, but I saw most customers take their choices away. My ice cream was delish, and the waffle cup was crispy and a satisfying ending. I'll be back.

Yelp
Overpriced, icey non-creamy ice cream, attitude workers, tip option on the payment kiosk for a ice cream come? Go to DQ instead folks. More options and better experience IMO

Yelp
Love this ice cream spot! Be aware they have overflow parking on a side street. It's staffed by mostly high school aged kids but they're fast and friendly. Lots of picnic tables to choose from under a big cover. The hurricone is my favorite - get the turbo cone crunch in it!

Yelp
A West Ashley institution, although I would probably choose Ye Olde before Turbo Cone. Certainly nothing wrong with TC, the ice cream we had was fine, if a little on the bland side. But it offers an overall good experience, being able to sit outside with everyone and enjoy your meal.

Yelp
Definitely our favorite soft serve in the area. I stick with old faithful, the chocolate and vanilla twist with rainbow sprinkles. Brings me back to my childhood! The good old days! My boyfriend likes to mix it up. Below is vanilla soft serve with strawberry shortcake topping. This place is always hopping, very-low key and service is quick. Outdoor seating only, but there is a public restroom. Love that they are always playing 80's jams.
google avatar

Yelp
So fun, loved the strawberry and chocolate swirl cone with rainbow sprinkles. Great outdoor seating and a parking lot attached. The only thing we haven't been a fan of is the root beer float, but everything else has been delicious! Great prices, fun atmosphere, and dog friendly! The name Turbo cone doesn't disappoint, they have speedy quick service!

Yelp
Soft serve ice cream is always a great idea and Turbo cone has a choke hold on me. The hurricone vanilla soft serve with peanut butter sauce and cookie dough is where it's at. The service is quick and friendly. It's only outdoor seating so embrace the vibe hot or cold! I'm a frequent customer at Turbo Cone
google avatar

Yelp
Honestly not impressed. Maybe we ordered the wrong thing. Our cones melted so so fast and it wasn't that hot out. They were very messy and got everywhere. For the price, I expected to be at least a little bit wowed, but the flavors were very mild and the hard shell was waxy. If you just want a soft serve cone, I'd go somewhere less expensive. The seating area grass was overgrown. I will say the girl taking orders was very kind though.

Yelp
Fun spot for soft serve ice cream in West Ashley! We had a waffle cone and a waffle bowl. Lots of toppings and great prices too. Large patio area to sit and eat too!
google avatar

Matt B.

Yelp
Amazing local spot! The ice cream is always fresh and comes out quick, would highly recommend the hurricone with Oreos. Or vanilla ice cream dipped in chocolate. Customer service is always awesome!

Briona K.

Yelp
The ice cream is decent, but I was very disappointed to find a hair in it. I'm disgusted and I likely will not return which is unfortunate because I've patronized this business many times.

Russ K.

Yelp
The ice cream is THE BEST and the staff is even BETTER!! This local business is so good that it is busy from the minute they open until they close and the staff are so hard working. We love Turbo Cone!!
google avatar

Opal D.

Yelp
I was served a hot mess of liquid soft serve with chunks of drip and a puddle of marshmallow sauce on top. It seemed like the gal working doesn't know how to dip and made a mess and instead of remaking it, threw it all inside a cup and gave it to me. It was so gross and disappointing, and inedible. I was so shocked when it was handed to me and she immediately moved onto the next customer that I just left without saying anything.
google avatar

Shamila P.

Yelp
I was really expecting more flavors and crazy amount of ice cream choices and over the top over creams but was kinda disappointed when they have only three flavors and some toppings. Park Circle Creamery is 100% the spot compared to this . Staff was also not the most friendly. I really want to like the spot but it was just meh for me. Ample parking space because there is really not much people going there
google avatar

Victoria G.

Yelp
Delicious ice cream with no frills at a decent price point. Outdoor seating and it does have restrooms for customers. The ice cream flavors were pretty standard like chocolate, vanilla, and a few vegan or nondairy options like raspberry or pineapple. The pineapple tastes like the Dole Whip from Disney world!! They do cones, mixins like the blizzards from DQ, shakes, and dipped cones. They stay very busy but are super fast.
google avatar

Amanda M.

Yelp
I didn't know soft serve was here in Charleston until a friend raved about Turbo Cone!! Coming from Florida, Twistee Treat is a staple so I'm so happy Turbo Cone is here. I was delighted to see that they had dairy free flavors too and so many different dips to choose from. I went with a dairy free pineapple dole whip soft serve with a blue raspberry dip topped with rainbow sprinkles! It was amazing! I also really love the drip cover for my cone. Charleston is hot and it definitely came in handy! There were a lot of people there but they had enough people working for a busy Sunday and we got our ice cream in a few minutes! Can't wait to try more flavors and combinations!

Yelp
Stopped in on Labor Day weekend and they were packed. The line moved quickly though as they had multiple windows going. They also have a good amount of seating to accommodate everyone. I was excited to find legit soft serve and especially with a mix of flavors. I ended up doing the blizzard type item (sorry I forget the name of it) using chocolate ice cream and a strawberry mix in. I'd like to see more candy mix ins like maybe heath bar or butterfinger. They also do dipped cones in all sorts of flavors too. It was really creamy and not icey at all plus the price was very reasonable. Definitely coming back.

Yelp
Loved this spot, even if it is a bit removed from town. Soft Serve is one of my favorite ways to enjoy ice cream and this spot ticks all the marks. You can have it dipped and sprinkled too, but I'm a purist - just the ice cream swirl, please. And theirs had great flavor. The only negative is the cones have a plastic drip cup on them - considering our wildlife here in the area - I would ask they lose that. We know how to handle a dripping cone...right?
google avatar

Rachyl D.

Yelp
We have been hoping for good soft serve in the area and haven't been able to find it yet. The texture of the ice cream was actually really good, it just didn't have much taste...I had a chocolate and vanilla swirl and couldn't taste a difference in either flavor which is kind of weird? The blizzard seemed better but wish they had butterfinger! Overall I would go back if I was in the area and wanting ice cream, but wouldn't go out of the way for it personally.
google avatar

Kevin K.

Yelp
Soft serve ice cream is alive and well in West Ashley. Turbo cone nails it with great prices at roadside ice cream stop. It's a favorite spot to stop with the kiddos during the warmer months. Staff is friendly and quick with orders and the best of all is the quality delicious ice cream! I even spotted vegan and gluten free options!
google avatar

Andrew J.

Yelp
Soft serve and softer service. When I went it was a bunch of HS kids that seemed a bit too uninterested in helping out a first-time customer. Now the menu isn't that complicated but I was unable to get what I really wanted due to them just not wanting to help out. I may go back if I'm really wanting a cone, but there are a lot better ice-cream places in the area.

Yelp
Glad to have a unique soft serve spot (outside the usual Dairy Queen etc) in town. Loved the birthday cake dip option- I haven't seen that at another shop before. I wish the hurricone had more than 1 topping included in the price since I am a topping queen. Nice and shaded with fans as well.
google avatar

Argi K.

Yelp
It's so hard to find soft serve ice cream in Charleston. I love that Turbo Cone is there when I am craving soft serve. The ice cream was so good! It wasn't very busy either so my toddler was able to walk around a bit on the patio as well to get some energy out while we ate our ice cream. This place is great! I definitely recommend. (Bring bug spray though) as with everywhere else the no-see-ums are already biting.

Yelp
Looking for a casual option to enjoy some delicious ice cream with the fam? Turbo Cone is your spot. With an order window and tons of picnic tables over gravel (makes you feel so much less guilty when your kid is inevitably dropping ice cream on the ground) this is the perfect place to stop for a treat. While the ice cream flavors might be a bit limited, the options are not. They have fun dips, toppings, milk shake and malts that you can customize. They also give out cool holographic stickers which was added to our collection of local stickers on the garage fridge. My little one got a vanilla milkshake and I'm happy to say it was the first one he has ever finished. Huge success -- thank you TC team!
google avatar

Nicole M.

Yelp
The only soft serve ice cream spot I know about in the are! I typically prefer hard scoop, but there's something about soft serve that takes me back to summer ice cream as a kid! They have your classic vanilla, chocolate or twist flavor as well as a dairy free option (I think sorbet). They do cup or cone and can also do swirls with toppings mixed in.
google avatar

Danielle P.

Yelp
This place had me at soft serve! We were out on a Saturday night recently and my daughter wanted ice cream. We were in North Charleston and wanted to go somewhere new. Yelp led me to Turbo Cone! This is such a good spot! You walk up to the window and place your order and they go by a number system printed on your ticket. There is a ton of outdoor seating options where you can wait and enjoy your treats! I ordered the swirl with sprinkles! This is a perfect Summer evening spot! I loved the atmosphere! The staff was very friendly as well!
google avatar

Timothy A.

Yelp
I stopped here the other night with my daughter. Our second visit to this location. I really enjoy their soft serve vanilla in a cup with sprinkles. It's nice and smooth, creamy, and cold. She ordered the special flavor twist, which was pineapple and dairy free vanilla. From what I could tell, she really enjoyed it. Plenty of parking, friendly staff, and a free sticker if you ask for one.

Yelp
I'm already looking forward to the next turbo cone trip!!! The soft serve is good on its own but I got distracted by the choice of unique toppings!! They had 3 types of twirly flavors available and I'm glad because it's hard for me to make a decision sometimes if there's too many options haha I went with the chocolate + raspberry swirl and my Dad went with the classic vanilla + chocolate. He got Reese's cups with his and they were very generous! For me I was delighted by the sprinkles and option to "dip" your cone or cup! I got the birthday cake dip and it tasted like frosting!! They got waffle cones, shakes, slushys. Next time I'm gonna get chocolate dip and cookie dough hehe Service was so quick too! Shortly after paying, our ice creams were ready to go! The outdoor seating area is plentiful, a little but loud by the busy road, but they did their best with the trellis greens fence/wall. Love a good ice cream!! Great spot! Pup cups available for the four legged friends too yayy
google avatar

Amanda B.

Yelp
I like that they have dairy free options, but it's a little pricey for basic soft serve.
google avatar

Shania S.

Yelp
came here on wednesday night and got the mango soft serve swirl. it was so good and the ice cream was so cheap too. there was a short line but they got through everybody so fast and served us super fast. there's also plenty of outdoor seating. definitely recommend with summer coming up 10/10
google avatar

Yelp
After driving by and never being able to stop, I finally got to Turbo Cone this weekend. Since I really hadn't done any research and was just going off of friends' recommendations, I didn't realize they only have two flavors for soft serve (three if you count "swirl"). I do want to go back and try their version of the Dole Whip, but for this time I got vanilla soft serve with butterscotch dip and cheesecake bits. I had actually changed my mom from cheesecake to cookie dough but I guess the attendant didn't hear me -- but I was happy with cheesecake, too! The servings are quite large and I feel like they're a good amount for the price. They have a large outdoor patio if you're eating there. Cute spot, wish there were more flavors - but maybe there will be in the future!
google avatar

Andrew G.

Yelp
Wanted some ice cream on a random Thursday night and this place was highly recommended by others I know, and they aren't the only ones who liked it, this place was packed, but not in a bad way. Fun environment and soft serve ice cream was really good! Good price if you get something basic, only complaint is that if you want a lot of toppings it can get pricey, but that being said they load your ice cream down with whatever topping you do get, so you don't need a lot of different toppings! Really good highly recommend.

Yelp
Other than DQ and Ryan's, I don't have any memories of soft-serve in Charleston. But the transplants rave about the places back where they're from, and it's hard not to feel like I missed out on something truly wonderful. Then Turbo Cone shows up and instantly fills that anemoia with their catchy name, retro branding and simple options. The entire experience is a vibe, and it's hard not to fall in love. My favorite, oddly enough, is just the swirl (chocolate and vanilla) in a waffle cone. The flavor and texture make it; it's nothing fancy or decadent, but it's such a treat. Our son dips his in something different every time, and loves that as much as I love my swirl cone. They've got something for everyone. Thanks to the owners for sharing a piece of their childhood with us. I get the soft-serve thing now, and I'm grateful I'm able to make similar childhood memories with our son.

Yelp
Great place for a cool treat on a hot summer night. The line moves quickly and the people behind the counter are calm and cordial. What else could you ask for?
google avatar

Frank G.

Yelp
I love Carvel. This is the closest I've ever gotten. Beautiful ice cream with very very little air...all cream. Vanilla cone with chocolate sprinkles, wow the best. Outside seating, no scrimping on the ice cream. The best thing that ever happened in the area. Just wish that they were open more days. Got to try this. Frank G

Yelp
So I parked on the wrong side and had to drive over to the other parking lot. That was a hassle because of traffic. Pay attention to the signs so you don't get towed. Be aware of the parking... The ice cream and shakes are delicious.

Kate H.

Yelp
Love this place. Great, quick service. They go big on the toppings / mix ins and have really reasonable prices too. New menu items for spring are bomb - try the banana with vanilla!
google avatar

Natalie C.

Yelp
Who doesn't need a good ice cream place to visit while on vacation?? We stopped here to grab a sweet treat on our way back from the beach and it's a cute little spot! There were a limited number of flavors (vanilla bean, chocolate, lactose free vanilla and a vegan pineapple whip), but lots of topping and add-in options. Prices were fair and the staff was super friendly and quick! We ordered: a twist in a cup with gummy bears, a vanilla cone with sprinkles and gummy bears and a chocolate hurricone with peanut butter cups. We got quite a bit of ice cream and it came to $16. Great place to stop!
google avatar

Nick R.

Yelp
TURBO CONE. Every time I drove past this place, I have to scream that because of the catchy name. I even bought a hat from their vast collection. Simple and sweet, Turbo Cone is as if you took a Dairy Queen, added a bunch of soft serve flavors, and had people make them that truly cared about personalizing your ice cream experience. I love supporting smaller restaurants over the mega chain, and Turbo Cone just does it better.
google avatar

Alexis P.

Yelp
Yummy soft serve, lots of mix-ins, and good service. Nothing CRAZY AMAZING here but overall a very good experience. The staff is really nice and the ice cream didn't take too long. It's all outdoor picnic tables but it's covered and there are fans. There are also 2 restrooms. I got a swirl of chocolate and vanilla with cookie dough and brownies mixed in. It was very yummy. A large soft serve with 1 mix in is $6. They also sell shakes, malts, and dipped cones. Overall, yummy ice cream and good service!
google avatar

Lisa A.

Yelp
I think a previous review said it best- the vibe and idea is there but the ice cream itself was just bland. They had a crowd and called peoples orders by numbers so I liked their system. I thought prices were a little stiff. Overall I'm glad I tried it but I don't foresee myself running back. For the price I'd rather go elsewhere.
google avatar

Jeremy D.

Yelp
Awesome soft serve, great location and very child and pet friendly. Easy parking and great options!
google avatar

Abigail D.

Yelp
I got cake cone with chocolate soft serve covered in rainbow sprinkles. My friend got vanilla soft serve with the birthday cake dip and rainbow sprinkles. It was sooo creamy I always go for soft serve, so if you're a ss fan check it out!
google avatar

Aspa C.

Yelp
5 Stars for the vibe, color schemes, upbeat music choice, service, parking, and seating options 3 Stars for the actual taste of the soft serve. I guess I was expecting more flavor to come through from the ice cream. The vanilla was incredibly bland and I was left pretty disappointed. The butterscotch dip was also on the tasteless side sadly. I'll certainly go back and try some other menu items though! I'll stick with chocolate next time as well!
google avatar

Rachel G.

Yelp
I am confused. I have never been to an ice cream place of any kind that you get a number and then have to wait 10+ minutes to get a somewhat expensive for soft serve.. it's a cute spot, you can bring your dogs, but the wait and price will make me think twice..
google avatar

Paradise T.

Yelp
Decent new spot in West Ashley. Soft serve is decent. Nice variety of toppings, but ice cream flavors are limited. Their hot fudge did not disappoint. Outdoor only seating. Currently, the straws for the milkshakes are unreasonably narrow which makes drinking a milkshake a serious displeasure if you choose to add mixins.
google avatar

Muz D.

Yelp
OMfriknG!!!! Every time I pass by there's a crowd. Always in line. As you pass by you can even see couples sitting down gazing each other's eyes indulging and such confectionate sin. They've been on my mind for so long and finally I checked them out. They had a couple kids inside running the place which is mind blowing. And so cool. But as usual there was already a line. I was on a roll the whole evening. This was an evening full of cool points for me. A nice movie, a good dinner, and dessert. I know I was going to seal the deal with this one before I even came. This is not that Sonic ice cream frozen milk crap. This was the real deal. All of the ingredients were natural and top of the line. Even the pecans were the fresh toasted ones. There's just a menu full of sin of All sorts dealing with ice cream. I'm bringing my kids back to get the ultimate cool points. We're talking father of the year here.lol. I have tried the pecan and Oreo combination on several other ice cream spots. There was such a beautiful marriage of the two at this spot. I will so be back.

Yelp
Definitely the place to get a sweet treat after dinner! One of my favorite things was definitely the outdoor seating!
