Today we looked for the Turley Wine Cellars, and we were fortunate enough to find them. We spoke with the very nice young lady pouring the wine and she indicated that this was their first official day open to the public, and they had been having a soft opening for the last week.
So, we got lucky.
After having seen Mr. Turley's picture on the cover of Wine Spectator, my expectations were very high, and thus it already was going to be tough for the wine to match the expectations.
Today, most of the wine was still from the Karly Winery, and it was being moved to the new room, apparently to be liquidated.
They were pouring generously, but this is not a free tasting. We paid $10 per person, and this included a glass. If you buy a bottle of wine, they waive one tasting, and we did, and so our group of three left with one bottle of wine and two glasses.
They were pouring some expensive Turley wine, and this was nice to see. Again, when the bottle is retailing for $86 it's tough for me to see the real world connection. Can I really drink a glass of wine for more than $21 per glass? For me, my budget is simply not that elastic. I did like the wine, but I would have liked it a whole lot more for about $40.
Also, so you know, the place is just opening as of this writing, and it's not quite hitting on all cylinders. In six months, it will probably be running a lot more smoothly, and I do look forward to my next visit.
To conclude, you'll pay to taste, the wine will be good, but many will find it a bit expensive.
