The Hottest New Bars Around D.C. Right Now

"Surrounded by murals of infamous bootleggers, custom cages filled with liquor bottles, and golden odes to the Great Gatsby, this dimly-lit speakeasy sauntered into Chase Chase in January with Prohibition-era cocktails served from a streetcar bar. A list of rich bar bites include a “Sleep With the Fishes” order of wonton tuna tacos and New England-style lobster rolls. Turncoat, the last piece of Common Plate Hospitality’s month-old Heights food hall, has its own dedicated door tagged with a tiny emblem. The Heights also has its own bar up front." - Tierney Plumb

Turncoat Loosens Up Chevy Chase With Bathtub Gin and Bootlegger Mugshots - Eater DC

"Chevy Chase drinkers can now saddle up to a dimly-lit streetcar bar to sip Prohibition-era cocktails as Al Capone looks on from above. Turncoat, the last piece of the Heights food hall project, is only accessed through an outside door tagged with a tiny emblem (5406 Wisconsin Avenue, Chevy Chase, Maryland)." - Aparna Krishnamoorthy

I wanted to give this place 5 stars but just couldn’t . Drinks were good but not great cuz they were surprisingly sweeter than expected. While the decor is nice the atmosphere was completely ruined by the fact that they chose to play music from a platform they don’t subscribe to so we had commercials every other song. Killed the ambiance. And the bartenders were hardly out of the back so it took too long to place our order and then to get our bill.

I'm amazed by the great reviews. Atmosphere was ok. Not bad, but definitely not the upscale speakeasy vibe of some. Service was mediocre. The small bar was full and we sat at the couches with tables but found we had to go to the bar to order drinks. Nobody told us that, we just figured it out when they didn't come to us. Nothing exceptional about the service at all, other than it was a little slow. The drinks were where the place really shined, in a bad way. The Old Fashioned had a very strong taste of sweet maple syrup or something like that which made it disgusting. I have never met an Old Fashioned I didn't like until I went here. I have had Old Fashioneds garnished with bacon before, but this was a thin crispy piece of bacon that looked like what you would get out of a precooked package of Oscar Mayer bacon, and it left a swirl of grease floating on the drink. The mule way too sweet. Not disgusting like the Old Fashioned that my wife and I each took a small sip of and left basically full, but I would never order it again.

Right here in the heart of Chevy Chase, they offer a great speakeasy lounge that will cater to everyone’s needs. I love when I stumble upon new places and especially a speakeasy lounge! It’s a win win situation. First off, if you like history then this place is for you. The culture was so rich and they did a great job with creating this illusion that we were in a completely different time zone. This establishment opened at 5pm and we arrived once they opened. I really enjoyed the atmosphere and conversing with the staff. They were super friendly and personable, and to top it off the bartender made an AMAZING drink. I ordered the “Billie Holiday” I had to for the culture- if you know then you know. It was truly an experience- the citrus scent did not over power the prickly, pear syrup and the orange bitters paired very well with the whisky. And It had an amazing sphere ice ball in the drink that was very translucent I didn’t even realize there was ice. The aroma of the food was so delightful. I cannot wait to try it on my next visit.

Drinks were overly sweet and overall not good in taste at all. Music was nice but had too many loud commercials and ruined the atmosphere. It was also very empty and we could see why. Drinks were too expensive for such poor quality.

The secret is out! 🫢 The Turncoat Speakeasy located in the new Heights Food Hall in Chevy Chase, MD is just what the area needed. (Opened January 2024) Turncoat is serving delicious cocktails alongside an amazing menu in a dimly lit bar that resembles a real Rock Creek Railway streetcar. As soon as you step in, you’re transported to the Roaring Twenties with the amazing decor and vibes. I thoroughly enjoyed everything at Turncoat. The menu is fun with plenty of amazing options to choose from. The staff were attentive and friendly. What I Tried: - Devil in the Details Deviled Eggs - Got Pinched Lobster Roll - AMAZING! 🤩 - Timekiller 🍹 - Clawfoot Tub 🍹 Cocktail prices range from $16 - $19 Food: 10/10 Cocktails: 10/10 Service: 10/10 Ambiance: 10/10 Hours: Wed - Sun, 5 pm - midnight 📍 5406 Wisconsin Avenue, Ste A Chevy Chase, MD 20815 Parking garage located on Friendship Avenue. Definitely worth checking out! 😉

Mr Speakeasy at another speakeasy. Found this just walking around. Went when it opened, so it was pretty empty. It has the old school prohibition vibe. Drinks, service and the chicken thigh sliders were very good.

Google
A very bizarre experience. Completely empty on a Saturday night, we weren’t sure if they were actually open. The server said they were closing earlier than their listed hours, but we had time to get one drink. We each ordered one. One drink was made right away at the bar, the second took 20 minutes while the bartender disappeared and then finally came back with the second (first drink was pretty much gone by this point). The drink (a classic cosmo) was in a plastic cup…? And not good at all. No wonder nobody was there. Terrible service, bad drinks, and even when empty took more than 20 minutes to get drinks seated at the bar.

Spent a wonderful evening at the Turncoat! Drinks were delicious (recommend the Boot-Legger - a variation on a smoked Old Fashioned) and lively discussions with the bartender. Highly recommend.

Yelp
Stopped in on a Friday night. The crowd was thin but the weather was nice so the doors were open and letting in a nice breeze. I tried the bootlegger, which hit the spot. Service was friendly. The menu offers a small but eclectic sampling of cocktails. Worth a visit. Prices are hefty but about what you would expect for a fancy cocktail place.

Yelp
My parents and I decided to stop by here before dinner to have a drink on a friday night. The menu has some really interesting combinations, so I was a little sad that we were just going to have a quick drink and go. We ordered the devils eggs (deal with the devil) as a snack and I really wanted more of these! I could have skipped dinner and eaten a couple of plates of just these! For drinks: -Billie Holiday - very good and very much an old fashioned type drink -Coppers & Gangsters - my mom got this and it's pretty and tasty (though on the sweeter side) -Bees Teas - my dad got this and it was cute and tasty We all agreed that we couldn't wait to go back and try some more of the drinks and the food! Overall good service and a fun little place to have a drink!

Yelp
Turncoat is a new "speakeasy" in Chevy Chase. I will first say that it is not a "speakeasy" meaning there's no secret entrance or code to get in. But it does have the dim lights and ambiance of a speakeasy. I had the claw foot rub which is just a gin and tonic in a bathtub cup which was alright. The coppers and gangsters was amazing. The food was also delicious; we had the chicken sliders and the fried deviled eggs. Service was very prompt and they have a fully staffed bar. The bartenders were so friendly and also funny. I would definitely give them another visit!

Yelp
Seek the door discreetly marked as Turncoat a few doors down from The Heights Food Hall As you walked into the dangerous dark and alluring world of the 1920's bootleggers, you enter the world of Chevy Chase's New Speakeasy. The room gives the vibes of an elicit railway car, with drinks named for the famed blues singer Billie Holiday, and the notorious mobster Al Capone. You can either order a fiery and smoky drink, that will light the warmth deep into your soul or wash away your sins with a bathtub cocktail. The vibes are a swank bar with the comparable prices of today's bar scene. We sampled the fries with duck fat flavor, paired with 3 different kinds of dipping sauce, with loved the green spicy one. My companion ordered a Bee's Tea which is their take on the classic Bee's Knees. It was beautifully crafted and tasted delicious. Being a maverick, I ordered the Claw footed gin drink, which came in an adorable little bathtub festooned with bubbles. The Barmen and women were quippy, sassy and clever with quick replies for the customers, leading to the alluring atmosphere of Turncoat. They graciously refilled our water glasses, as we soaked in the vibes. There were many other good food selections, burger sliders, taste lamb and savory mushrooms, which I'll have to try when I return. The prices range from $10-$30, depending upon your preference. Come Spring and Summer, both Turncoat and the Heights will truly be teaming with even more customers, as the populous return to venturing outside. I can't wait to turn this into one of my favorite haunts.

Yelp
This new speakeasy in town is a real find! The vibe is awesome, and the drinks and food are top-notch. I especially loved the cute touch of having flowers in the ice--they really elevate the experience. It's not super hard to find, no secret entrance or anything, but the decor is cool and cozy. Plus, bonus points for having parking in the Whole Foods garage nearby. Overall, it's a must-visit spot for a fun night out with friends or a special date. #bubblytip: Some drinks take longer to make, so don't get impatient - they are worth the wait!

Yelp
Alisha and I checked out Turncoat Speakeasy on its first night of service. Since it was early, we had a choice of sitting at the bar or lounge. Kimberly, Marlowe, Alex, Chad, and Larry provided excellent service throughout the night. Alisha had Black Gold and Crabappletini cocktails. Between the two, she liked the Black Gold, which had notes of chocolate. I enjoyed both gin cocktails: Coppers and Gangsters and Clawfoot Tub. Between the two cocktails, I enjoyed the Clawfoot Tub more. The Coppers and Gangsters cocktail was a gin sour, and it was more dessert-like with the creamsicle foam. The Clawfoot Tub was definitely the stronger cocktail. I liked how it was garnished with a blend of fresh fruit - pineapple, apple, and kiwi and dried blood orange. We shared Bootleg Burger Sliders, Shrooming, Got Popped, and Deal with the Devil. Among the 4 appetizers we shared, our favorites were the Bootleg Burger Sliders and Deal with the Devil. The Bootleg Burger Sliders came in 3 and were juicy and flavorful. Every bite of the Deal with the Devil was tasty. I loved the crispiness and combination of flavors from the egg, candied pork belly, scallions, and black caviar. Got Popped was good but a little on the salty side. I felt like Got Popped would have tasted better as duck fat fries with foie gras and truffle salt.

Yelp
Most speakeasy's are underground but this one is elevated, figuratively and literally. And my wife's grandfather prosecuted Bugs Moran in Dayton, so while a bit haunting, it was very cool. I'm sure grandpa was smiling down on us.

Yelp
My brother and I went to this establishment for a celebration. It was hard to find, but when we did find it, we had a swell time. Staff were very nice and talented when preparing our drinks. I liked the Boot-Legger for the performance and the Black Gold for the creativity and taste. One of the drinks my brother got was the Coppers & Gangsters, which had a nice creamsicle foam on top. Moving on to the food, the deviled eggs were unique, especially since it was garnished with caviar. But the real standout here was the duck fat fries: crispy, tasty, and flavorful on the outside, moist and fluffy on the inside. Perfect. I also loved the eerie, prohibition style atmosphere. Feels like I was experiencing the real thing. Hope to come back again soon.

Yelp
Turncoat is the newest vibe to chevy chase and is quite a delight! The service is impeccable and the drink menu is quite sophisticated and aimed at prohibition era spirits. The kitchen is open until 1145/midnight which is definitely a plus. I live the fried chicken sliders. The revival sauce us dope. Bartenders are knowledgeable and super personable! You definitely want to check it out!

Yelp
Overpriced- boring atmosphere - "Speak for easy"... not Trying too hard- just be a bar and lower some of your prices to lure people in (DC is down the street)

Yelp
Been anticipating this place opening and they did not disappoint! Cool menu and incredible service!!!

Yelp
We ordered food and a couple of drinks. Food was fine but the cocktails were not worth the price. Our bartender seemed out of it. The other staff seemed to know this and, to their credit, asked us if we had been helped or needed anything despite our bartender being right there. We ended up going to a different bar in DC to finish our night.

Yelp
Decided to try turncoat recently after it opened, and it is definitely one cool speak easy. From the outside it looks like a normal bar, but when you enter you definitely get an ol timer cigar bar/speak easy vibe. The cocktails are mainly focused on gin/whiskey but you can substitute liquors as needed. My friend and I tried the don papas and they were pretty good. I wished they were a little crispier but they came with 3 different sauces which were fun to try. We also got to meet Marlo who was so knowledgeable on the establishment and menu. He let us know everything we needed to know and was very friendly. Will definitely be coming back!

Yelp
I rarely write reviews for places because I know everyone works really hard to perfect their trade. However, this place gets a single star due to the service, since we really didn't get to taste food or enjoy the drink. We went there on a Saturday night around 10.30pm for drinks. Even before we fully entered the restaurant, Chris the bartender, was quick to say they are doing last call. From that point on, all went downhill. He gave us the bill with our drinks, because he wanted to make sure we are ready to pay. The place is supposed to be open till midnight There were another group who walked in few minutes after us (7-8 ppl) and he literally showed them the ice bucket and said they are done, unless they just want dry ice. Rude rude rude, service, that's all i remember from this place. He wasn't the only server there, if he needed to leave early, he could have done so without being rude to everyone who was there.

May L.

Yelp
Had to check this place out with my friend tonight and we had a great time...the food was wonderful and the cocktail menu was fun, but Gabriel had some fantastic creations that we were able to taste and we think should be put on the menu. Will definitely be back again!!

Minh L.

Yelp
Chris, the bartender at Turncoat is very friendly and engaging. great conversation! He made great drinks and we enjoyed our time here.

Noble L.

Yelp
The bartender, PM B as seen on the receipt, was just unbelievable with his stereotypical racist jokes towards two black guys. Making jokes about me using a stolen credit card, referring to two almost 40 year old black men as boys, was beyond distasteful, racist, and just pure ignorant. My Amex was in MY NAME, and as seen on my Government issued ID. We took the high road, laughed it off and even tipped him, but this is unacceptable.

Pat J.

Yelp
Great experience. Awesome place and am so glad it's in the neighborhood. The drinks were great and the service was even better. Rags took great care of us, even though our group was a bit hard to seat and staggered our arrival times. Can't wait to come back.

Sharon B.

Yelp
Rags is the absolute best. Fabulous drinks. Fabulous service. Super grateful to finally have a place like this in Friendship Heights.

Bridget B.

Yelp
Poor service, disappointing cocktails, fine food but bad experience overall. Would not return.

Brendha N.

Yelp
Drinks and food were amazing! The revival sauce is phenomenal and the service was fantastic. Marlow was very knowledgable and kind. Loved the ambiance of the place, will be coming back!

Sam P.

Yelp
100% not worth the money. The bartender, Marlow, is arrogant and annoying. His attitude is unwelcoming and rude. Makes paying 20+ a drink sting even more. My wife wanted a vodka drink, and Marlow made her feel stupid for even thinking of such a ridiculous idea in a bar, even though we could clearly see a few vodka choices available. He seemed offended she didn't want one of his drinks off his cocktail menu. Apparently, vodka isn't an approved 'speakeasy' spirit. I highly suggest walking right around the corner to The Heights bar (same ownership, same building) and have an amazing time with Kimberly. She is exactly what you'd hope for in a bartender. Welcoming, friendly, and quick. I'll leave my own review of The Heights bar on their page. But trust me when I say this place is definitely a pass. Never again.

Elizabeth M.

Yelp
this place is the most expensive place for a glass of wine. we went there to just have a happy hour and was served a glass of Pino Grigio that was sub standard. there was no one on the place at 5.30 on a Wednesday and that should have bee a clue. The ambience is dark bar which was supposedly cool but not really to our liking but ok. when the bill came the charge for the glass of ordinary wine was $24.00. The bartender didn't ofifer the wine menu to tell us that and just expected to pay this price Btw, happy hour wine is usually less than $10 in the neighborhood. Guess if you Just have a few customers, why not get the most out of them.
