The Best Restaurants in Lafayette, Louisiana, aka Cajun Country | Eater New Orleans

"For a very different, no-frills experience I go to Turtle’s Bar, a rustic shack on the Henderson Levee overlooking the Atchafalaya Basin that’s all about ice-cold beer, straightforward libations (and pudding shots on special nights), friendly crowds, and solid bar food." - Beth D’Addono

Stopped for lunch with 6 of us on a Saturday. The place has a really cool layout with lots of outside seating. There was a line to order at the window so I went to the bar to get a drink first and she offered to take my order, so win! Both bartenders were very friendly and efficient and a pleasure to chat with. I had the Shrimp Po'Boy and it was delicious. 6 quite large shrimps, maybe need a little more dressing but the flavor was amazing. Definitely recommend the place!

Cool place on the water. We enjoyed a nice day out on the deck. Food was good and so were the drinks. Will be back.

Omg. The food, the views of the Atchafalaya Basin, the whole experience was like a world away. Excellent. Worth the drive. The burger was so darn good, perfect taste, seasoning and quality of beef. You could taste it.

What a hidden gem! Food was excellent and people friendly. We decided to stop here after doing the swamp tour at McGee’s. We will be back, when in the area.

My family and I checked out Turtle’s Bar and Grill on a Saturday evening, and overall, we had a great experience. Parking can be a bit tight, and you may need to park on a steep levee, so keep that in mind if you’re visiting during a busy time. The atmosphere is fantastic—Turtle’s is located right on the basin, and the waterfront views are beautiful. Watching the boats come and go added a relaxing, scenic touch to our evening. Indoor seating is somewhat limited, so you might have to wait or choose outdoor seating if it’s busy. The ordering process is a little different: you grab a menu, then place your order at a window. Once your order is in, you’re given a beeper that lets you know when your food is ready—super convenient. Our food came out quickly and was absolutely delicious. We shared the seafood platter and gator bites, and both dishes exceeded our expectations. In fact, we all agreed the gator bites might be the best we’ve ever had. The bar area was also impressive, with a solid selection of drinks and a laid-back vibe. We’re already looking forward to going back!

Went for the first time with friends. It's an hr drive from our home. Well worth the drive! Food is great, beer is cold. Turtles is a floating restaurant/grill nestled right next to a boat launch on Henderson Bayou. So you get some entertainment while eating on the patio. I definitely recommend taking a trip. Try the chili dog and gator bites!

This is a nice stop coming off the water or if passing through. Menu isn't big but that's for a reason. I asked the chef what he recommends. He said burger. Man he was right. I haven't had a at home tasting burger from a restaurant in a while. This thing tasted like it was definitely home made and hand formed. Excellent service the bartender was very polite. If you want a nice cajun atmosphere with some down home cooking stop by. Will be back with my family when we kayak the atchafalaya. No cell service gave me a nice break from work!!

Went to try out the burgers and I was NOT disappointed. Delicious homemade burger with homemade kettle chips. Don’t skip out. Ended up staying and enjoying the beautiful outside on the deck.

Yelp
I love this place. Unfortunately my whole family has always been in Louisiana and I was raised in Michigan so coming back down and visiting is always amazing. The food was so good (brunch) I had the shrimp and grits and it was perfect. They were playing music with a live band that was super good. Definitely recommend this place. Oh and staff was all nice!

Yelp
I love everything about this bar. The decor is fun and of course turtle themed! The bartenders are friendly and working their tails off so tip them well. The atmosphere is casual and fun - like a vacation watering hole that locals can belly up to the bar along with tourists and out of towners. Everyone is welcome. The drinks were flowing and the food is really good. Seriously - great wings!!! And try the Fisherman's Special is a good deal - 2 chili dogs, chips and a drink. Solid. We will definitely come back! It was worth the 2 hour drive from Orleans parish.

Yelp
Went Thursday night to get the special for $15.99. Got the hamburger steak, mashed potatoes, corn. Food gravy and onions were very tasty . Also got a really delicious dessert . Bread pudding topped with a rum sauce . Very good . Service good and real clean. Wish they would put this meal on the menus .

Yelp
Located right by the Henderson Swamp boat launch, this charming floating bar captures the essence of small-town hospitality. After enjoying a swamp tour, we decided to grab lunch here. We started with fried pickles and queso with house-made chips, both of which were delicious --those chips reminds me of Buc-ee's Beaver Chips! For my main dish, I got the seafood platter, featuring fried shrimp, catfish, and oysters. Everything was fresh, and the portions were generous. If you find yourself in the area, I would recommend stopping by for a laid-back meal!

Yelp
Kinda disappointed a $20 combo basket came with a piece of fish that was cut in half, and 6 small sized shrimp. I ate and was still hungry. In addition to being cut in half the Fish was thin and mostly batter. It was very small amount of food and cutting a piece of fish in half only giving half is shameful. I also suspect both were imported seafood to maximize profit, very sad.

Yelp
A very fun place with very eclectic decor. We ate outside and you had to go inside to order, get drinks, get food, etc. but it was good process that seemed to work better that a lot of places that require that. Food service was quick and the Fisherman's Special (two chili dogs and homemade chips) was great. Chili was a little sweet and could have used a few jalapenos but other than that it was very good. The Tater keg was a little lacking and didn't really fit the description but it was okay. Prices were not bad and the service was great.

Yelp
Very local and Cajun esque bar and grill by Henderson swamp and boat launch. Simple Creole inspired menu; the freshly cut and fried chips, fried jalapeños/pickles were very tasty. Got the fried wings for the entree and portion size was very good. I got the wings naked with sauce on the side but would recommend them wet for future reference. Good food and service was friendly.

Yelp
I love this place. The staff is super friendly and attentive . The 1/2 Catfish sandwich is the perfect size with great homemade chips. ) order a side of queso for the chips, my first visit. But more to come!

Yelp
Great bar & grill on the levee. Not far off the interstate if driving through or if you are camping at Camp Margaritaville it's approx. 3.5 miles from there. Fried oyster basket and fried shrimp basket was delicious. We sat at the bar, but you can order food at the inside walk up window. They have beer on tap and liquor. Great atmosphere. Family friendly. You can also book a swamp tour right on site.

Yelp
Worth the stop of the beaten trail. A step back in time. Looks like a great place to take a tour also. Glad to have seen it

Yelp
Truly love this place, been coming here for years. Last time was in early May 2021, owner said that the place was going to be torn down and a new building was to be built and trying to keep he same mystique of the place
