25 Iconic Dishes That Define Rome - Rome - The Infatuation

"Saltimbocca is a dish that’s hard to perfect. The veal must be pounded super thin and cooked just right—crispy at the edges without being overdone. The ratio of prosciutto to sage has to be spot on, and the sauce should never be bland. And it’s one of the few Roman recipes that unapologetically calls for butter. Husband-and-wife duo Roberta and Loretta have been perfecting this dish for decades at their spacious, old-school spot in San Giovanni. Their white wine gravy, infused with herby meat drippings, gets poured over tender veal filets and served with a side of roasted potatoes, perfect for mopping up every last buttery drop. Friccico Ristorante also makes a great saltimbocca using duck that's a tad tougher than veal but crispier." - annie replogle

Do not eat here if you like flavor. I ordered a 10 oz NY strip steak with roasted potatoes, veggies, and onion rings. The steak had zero seasoning, after I added salt and pepper it was edible. The veggies could have been cooked longer and they were also missing seasoning. My boyfriend got the land and sea, the steak once again was only edible after he added salt. The bacon wrapped scallops were plain but tolerable. Both of our steaks had large chunks of fat so realistically we only had 6 oz of steak each. When we asked the server why there was no spices, he said that some customers don’t like it, so the cooks don’t use it on any of these dishes. Not liking flavor is a preference but at this restaurant it’s an afforded a right so we wasted $70. No redeeming qualities.

Nice ambiance, our waitress was really nice. We ordered the Onion Soup, the Black Bean soup, and the Pasticho rolls for starters. Absolutely delicious!! The Cheese Ravioli, Classic Fried Shrimp, Classic Broiled Shrimp, Sea Scallops, and the Mama Maria for the main course. All well cooked and nicely prepared. We also ordered the Chocolate Dynamite and Carrot Cake for dessert. The food was very tasty. I only have one comment, and that's about the Scallops-- I felt they were cooked well but weren't seasoned.

Google
We had a birthday party for a 1 year old in a private room. Plenty of room for 28 adults and 8 children. The staff was very helpful and polite. Food was outstanding and portions were extremely generous. I can't say enough good things about Tuscany!!

Google
If you like authentic Italian food, do not eat here. The penne vodka has horrible sauce- pretty much loaded with basil. Couldn’t even eat it. Same for the pasta dish my husband got. Won’t be back.

From start to finish a very enjoyable dining experience! Friendly, dialed in sounds, very impressed with flavors through out my meal, steak was quality and perfectly cooked!

On site free parking. Staff was very friendly. Reservations were made, but we had to wait about 15-20 mins for our table, slightly disappointed by this. The place itself is outdated. The food was mediocre, and surprisingly lacking flavor like other reviews have stated. This was slightly a step above olive garden. The bread was good. Crisp fried calamari was good, but not "crisp". The breading lacked flavor and was not at all crisp, however the calamari wasn't over cooked by any means---which most places over cook it, to get thr crispy outside--it was really good, but not "crisp". The pear and goat cheese crustini was the best item of the night. The bread was delish and not too hard. The combo of goat cheese, honey, pear...it was really good. Lobster ravioli was ok. There was so much sauce on the plate u couldn't see the ravioli. The sauce was on the bland side, needed salt desperately. There was about 4/5 pieces of over cooked shrimp and the ravioli was flat, with barely any lobster. My husband's steak was ok. Lacking flavor. Cheesecake was average. We were glad we tried the place, not sure we would return. For the price, the flavor just wasn't there.

Google
I tried the honey fig chicken, one of the house specialties, and unfortunately, it didn’t live up to the hype. Despite the excess liquid on the plate, the chicken itself was incredibly dry, and the honey fig sauce was overwhelmingly sweet. While I did enjoy the appetizers, the overall meal was underwhelming. Given how much people rave about this restaurant, I expected more, but the food ended up being rather bland and disappointing. To top it off, the service was just as uninspiring, making the whole experience even more lackluster. However, the dessert was a pleasant surprise—the pistachio ice cream was rich and flavorful, and the homemade cheesecake was delicious, ending the meal on a high note.

I met my parents for lunch in this area. In my opinion the prices were quite high over $100 for 2 sandwiches and 2 appetizers. No alcohol or drinks. We all had water. Waitress was great! Good attitude and excellent service. This establishment also charges an extra 3% fee if you use a credit card. The food quality was OK.

Yelp
My friends and I were looking for a nice spot for dinner and stumbled upon this place. This was probably the best pork chop I've ever had it was super tender and juicy and paired nicely with the portobello mushroom and goat cheese that was on top. The service was also great the waiter was very nice and was quick. This place is also very reasonably priced. Highly recommend!

Yelp
Atmosphere is cozy-family friendly. They have different seating areas, we were seated to the right of the bar with two other large parties. The server was very attentive and friendly. Unfortunately, my penne a la vodka was very bland. It didn't have the usual pinkish color so I knew something was off. I love Italian food so my standards are high. This penne vodka just wasn't "it". Disappointed.

Yelp
You can't go wrong with any appetizer here! We got a bunch for the table and I could have been happy to end my meal there. The mushroom caps, eggplant tower, and the calamari were my favorites. The calamari was one of the best I've had in a while - it was so tender. The fresh ricotta along with the crispy eggplant was a hit among the table. My main meal, land and sea, was okay. The steak lacked flavor and the scallops didn't seem as fresh as the calamari. The lunch was back on track once dessert came out. The crème brûlée was delicious but the chocolate dynamite stole the show. It had the perfect ratio of cake to mousse where you are able to eat the whole thing forgetting how full you were. Our server did an excellent job keeping track of our big table. The food and drinks came out timely after ordering.

Yelp
Went there July 6 2025, food was not that good, ordered the land and sea off the menu, cheap steak that was warm not hot, three small scallops wrapped in bacon that was not well cooked, three small potatoes that were warm. I noticed there was NO HANDICAPPED parking even tho there was parking for about 50 cars. I thought every place had to have some handicapped parking. Wonder how much they pay Brick police not to notice? Don't think we will be back.

Yelp
Having to endure three over served morons at your bar ruined your otherwise good food and good service. I shouldn't hear "motherf#$ker", "ji## stain", "a$$hole", or their disparaging racial commentary while having dinner. Your bartender warned them once.....then nothing. I felt horrible for the older couples seated nearby.

Yelp
It was our first time visiting this restaurant. There were 4 of us and it was our midway point for all of us to meet. It's right off the parkway. The place is lovely, ample parking. It's very cozy. We were seated, our server comes over and asks for drinks. The cups they have are heavy, but it seemed every time he put the cups down, he was slamming them, BOOM-BOOM. He was eager to get our orders started. We had not seen each other and a while and needed time to check the menu. He must've come to the table 3 times. I had to ask for bread for the table as he had not brought any. Our food was very good, we had calamari and mushrooms for appetizers. Our entrees consisted of an Angus salad, which was huge. It looked very good. Grilled Tuscany-chose a wrap instead of a roll...Grilled Chicken, Roasted Peppers, Mozzarella, Pesto m, it came with steak fries Larnaca Panini- very good. Breaded Chicken Cutlet, Fresh Mozzarella and Prosciutto on Panini Bread with a Touch of Ranch Dressing, served with Sweet Potato Fries My fiend ordered the Parmesan Crusted Chicken --parmesan crusted chicken breast served with risotto and asparagus and a light cream sauce. She loved it. All the foods were very good. We had cappuccinos, creme brûlée and tiramisu. We'll be back!!!

Yelp
Every time I've come to New Jersey, I have to make a stop at Tuscany for their amazing food! From mouthwatering pasta dishes to delicious desserts, this place has it all. If you're in the area, it's a must-try spot that will leave you coming back for more. Trust me, you won't be disappointed!

Phyllis F.

Yelp
Stopped in with a friend for appetizers, food is always delicious, good service and good vibe, sat at a high top at the bar area, comfortable seating. We shared calamari always outstanding and my all time favorite app broccoli rabe, hot sausage and polenta.

Yelp
I ordered take out (DoorDash) from one of my favorite places tonight. I got two orders of Shanghai wings (their wings are the best wings on the planet) and two orders of shrimp cocktail. I asked that they bag the shrimp separately so it didn't get warm from being next to the wings. They did just as I asked. The problem is the minute I opened the containers of shrimp the fishy smell almost knocked me over. Fresh shrimp (or even previously frozen) should NOT smell like that. When fish smells fishy it's because it's bad and whoever put that shrimp in the containers and decided it was ok to sell (at $19 each order for four shrimp) is either nose blind or just an asshat. It should have been thrown in the trash BEFORE leaving the restaurant...not once it got to my house. That's exactly where it is. In the trash along with the $38 it cost me. I was going to complain to DoorDash but it's not their fault. So I called Tuscany and whoever answers the phone had me on hold so long that I gave up and came here instead. I don't believe it's the actual restaurants fault. They hire kitchen help for just this reason. It's their job to rotate stock and throw out the bad stuff. Instead of throwing out the bad stuff they sent it to my house. Is it the end of the world? No. Did I eat every last one of the wings? Yes. Will I order from there again? Doubt it. Once it's at your house there isn't much you can do about it. I'm Not looking for anything from the restaurant except for management to tell their kitchen staff to pay attention to what they're sending out. There is no way they missed this smell. No way. I can't even keep the trash can inside. I can smell it all the way in the kitchen. Now I have to get up and bring it outside. Again there is no way they missed this smell and if they did they're in the wrong profession.

Yelp
Had a reservation on a Saturday night and the place was crowded. Service was excellent. There were two dinner specials and one appetizer special. Ordered a glass of wine and a water was brought along with it....nice touch! Bread was delivered to the table as well- yum! My daughter enjoyed her kids chicken fingers. They were very good. I had the grilled shrimp over arugula salad. The salad was very tasty. The shrimp were barely grilled and honestly a bit unedible for my taste. I should have asked for them grilled well done. I wound up taking most of it home, nuked the shrimp and finished it there. My husbands scallops were perfect and my parents both enjoyed their meals. Total was $159 before tax and tip and that included 4 bar drinks, but no appetizers or dessert. We will definitely be back.

Yelp
Three factors define this restaurant as sublime. 1) longevity: despite natural and man-made challenges (from hurricanes to COVID) this place as consistently delivered extraordinary dining experiences for over 30 years. 2) throngs of local and not-so-local diners who pack this place to the maximum fire safety capacity each weekend, and 3) the consistency of top 4-5 star ratings across multiple platforms. It's also interesting to note how many wedding catering requests they receive.... Do the math... do the drive here.... And you'll see why this is my family's favorite place. Everything is executed to perfection. Even a simple side dish like calamari or a salad is done with extraordinary perfection. Family owned and operated. Local icon. Amazing experience. It would overtax my abilities to go over all the superb dishes here. Check it out yourself. Mahalo for reading my review.

Yelp
So the evening started with a cup of seafood chowder. It was just the right portion of a wonderful cup of soup. It had just the right balance of sea food and potato in a nice creamy mix. The others at the table both had the house salad which contained a variety of lettuce, tomato and cucumbers. They also both loved the dressings they were given. I wound up Pork Chop Creole and it was a wonderful choice. It was a pork chop cooked medium rare with a portobello mushroom on top. Along with this was shrimp, mashed potatoes all swimming in a wonderful white sauce. And under the potato pile there were also a few chunks of cooked potato that was a nice surprise to the meal. And on top of the pork chop and mushroom was a small hunk of goat cheese semi melted to finish the entree. For dessert the three of us had cheesecake, Creme brûlée and the ice cream dish that today escapes my mind. All were wonderful. I have family that goes there often. While this was our first visit, we will be back. Food prices were very fair, with top shelf service.

Yelp
We had a reservation and it is recommended as this place was packed. Six of us were seated promptly and it is a very nicely decorated & comfortable restaurant. Although crowded, noise was not an issue. Our server whose name when we started to order was Victoria. One of our friends thought she remembered her name from a prior visit. (The friend had been here before and was right about the food but the server name was actually Jacqueline. She never let on until the check arrived) My wife and I shared a bottle of Pinot Noir which was good. She likes to google price on internet compared to restaurant prices. It had a fair mark up not outrageous. We started with sharing of appetizers. Crispy Calamari, Mussels A La Tuscany, Artichoke Francaise. All were very good and in good proportions for sharing. Two of us ordered the Seafood Pescatore , one the Parmesan Crusted Chicken, Penne A La Vodka with added Shrimp, and two orders of Chicken Broccoli Rabe. Well everything was great. Served in a reasonable time, no long wait. Portions were very generous and I totally enjoyed my meal. I was the only one to consume his plate, everyone else needed a go box lol. We even ordered deserts to share, with Irish coffee. Felt no pressure to leave and it was a very relaxing and enjoyable evening! Thank you Jacqueline and much thanks to the kitchen for a well enjoyed meal by all.

Yelp
Food Disappointing 2nd visit to this restaurant (1st time was great). Went for lunch; we were given dinner menus (dinner prices). The pinot noir gave me an upset stomach (too old?). The food looked more like diner food, at a higher price! I ordered Shrimp Francese; shrimp was perfect, but the sauce was too thick & greasy. Gave me reflux all night! Restaurant was sparsely decorated (Halloween); waitstaff was friendly and service was good.

Yelp
For one of the best dining experiences in the area I highly recommend Tuscany in West Brick, NJ on Rt 88. The inside is reminiscent of a rustic country inn with a roaring fireplace in the main dining room, cozy booths in the bar area and a side room for about 25 off to the side. I remarked that as crowded as the restaurant was the noise level was surprisingly and happily subdued. This past Saturday four of us had reservations which were promptly honored. this is my second visit there, oddly enough as I write the old review from 2022 came up. Happily, none of the dinners were overwhelmed by garlic. The calamari appetizer was plentiful, but I thought a little undercooked. The sausage and broccoli rabe appetizer, a good portion with 4 decent sized pieces of delicious Italian sweet sausage with the seasoned chopped up broccoli on top and underneath a portion of polenta. Their polenta is soft almost gelatinous with corn kernels inside, very tasty. One diner ordered the pork chop, a thick well-cooked portion, fresh rated cheese on top, cooked apple slices and a rich gravy. Another diner had the farfalle with cherry tomatoes, alia olio and lots of parmigiano grated by the helpful, attentive but not hovering, waitress. The third diner ordered the Ahi tuna. This was cooked perfectly, seared on the outside and plenty of red on the inside. This was served with a medley of cooked peppers and other vegetables with a piquant tapenade and three baked potatoes. A visual as a well as a culinary delight. My dinner was a house specialty, Veal Stemperata, a hearty portion of chunks of veal cooked to tenderness, with kalamata olives, capers, white raisins and pine nuts. With a healthy potion of the wonderful polenta underneath. Worth many trips back to try much of the rest of the menu.

Yelp
What a great little find we happen to just stop in on a whim great ambience very good service I love that they have booths old school behind the bar the waitress was very nice and attentive they give you soup or a salad with your meal which I love I tried the soup it was very good Darren had the salad it was fresh we both tried something different and the food was delicious and the portions were big we took a doggy bag home definitely give it a try if you're in the area I'm sure it gets very busy in the summer

Yelp
We have passed this restaurant several times, it always has a good crowd so we thought we'd give it a try. We called for a reservation, but considering it was a very, very rainy night. We didn't need one we were seated promptly. Our waitress Denise couldn't be more attentive. We had bread with olive oil dip and butter. Our meals came with soup or salad. We both tried the pasta Fagioli which was tasty with just the right amount of spice. I ordered the Chorizo Cod which was a special it came with a side of rice. My husband ordered the Seafood Pescatore. Both dishes were cooked perfectly. For dessert I ordered the Tartufo, which was heaven! I liked the fact they had a decent amount of dessert choices. My husband topped it off with an Irish coffee. All in all it was a good value for the quality. I like to always try new places but I would definitely return.

Yelp
Excellent service. Very reasonable prices, and great food!! If you pass by Tuscany without stopping in you are making a mistake!!!

Yelp
The 4 of us are new to the area, and wanted a great place to have a birthday dinner ... We read great reviews so we decided this would be perfect ! After a long long wait, we asked the waitress for suggestions, and she said you can not go wrong with ANY dish ... We ordered Shrimp Scampi, Farfalle Mediterrano, 16-Oz. New York Sirloin Steak, & Veal Saltimbocca... O M G - It was like food served from a school cafeteria !! (no offense schools) Could NOT eat it, and the waitress didn't come back to ask how our food was! She only came back to see if we wanted desert ! She saw ALL our plates were full of food, barley touched and didn't say one word ! Asked if we wanted to take it home, and 3 of of said no, I was the only one to take home my $30 steak to our dog !! Our waitress could have at least asked us why NONE of us ate our food nor wanted to take it home !! Waste of money and beyond disappointed !!

Yvonne C.

Yelp
Amazing food. Great service good value for your money! I can't wait to go back and try other meals!

Yelp
Food was delicious. Server was helpful. A nice environment. A lovely place to eat. I had streak with Gorgonzola and a delicious salad. My husband had a chicken dish, it was wonderful. We will be back.

Yelp
Very disappointed food is subpar To salty no consistency Food thrown together on the plate The owner has to taste his own food products Service' was ok but distracted.
google avatar

Nicholas G.

Yelp
Neighborhood spot where they do it right. The artichoke franchiase was one of the better ones I have had in the area. The fried calamari was also fried crispy. The chicken parm was a hefty portion with good flavor in the sauce. Tbe service was spot on. Really enjoyed myself. Dont forget to try the tiramasu!
google avatar

Ken B.

Yelp
Have never had a bad meal or service here. Even the bar atmosphere is nice. Definitely on our list of repeat places.
google avatar

Joisey G.

Yelp
Food and sangria delicious! Ordered the chicken parm with rigatoni and red sangria. Went for early dinner. Nice atmosphere and great service

Midda G.

Yelp
The food is amazing! I had the Poached Pear salad with grill chicken. My husband on the other hand was disappointment since they advertise as an Italian Bar/ Restaurant he was looking forward to eating meatballs and spaghetti but the waitress said "well you won't be able to get that here because this is a Mediterranean Resturant" jaws dropped on both me and my husband as we were surprised to hear that, so he had the chicken marsela and baked potato that definitely did not disappoint. Dessert was also delicious.

Brian K.

Yelp
This is our favorite go to place. Nice atmosphere to relax, enjoy a cocktale and chat with friends. Staff are all friendly and attentive and the food is very good as well. I don't think I have ever had a bad meal there. if your sitting in the bar ask for the bar menu, the steak sandwich is the best.

Billy K.

Yelp
Good food and good service. Traditional Italian family owned restaurant atmosphere. Not a spaghetti place, real Italian recipes.
google avatar

Rocco B.

Yelp
Went to dinner on Saturday night, place was full but was able to get a table within 15 mins. Ordered Artichokes, Broccoli Rabe and Sausage, and Lolipop Lamb chops for appitizers, all were terrific and large portions. All the dinners were terrific also and included a salad!! We will definetly be back.

Yelp
First time going with seven individuals and we didn't think we needed reservations on Sunday night. Wrong The place was packed. Great sign for the quality of the food. They had to work hard to get us a spot, but made it happen. The meal did not disappoint. Straight up five star experience !!

Yelp
Wow! First visit and expected simple bar food, man was I pleasantly surprised! Super Italian menu, I mean it does say Tuscany Bar and Grill, duh! The cream of asparagus soup was unbelievable. Followed by Orchettie with shrimp, peppers and spicy Italian sausage. Good bread for dipping. Took half home and devoured it t the next day. Pretty girls at the bar was very nice and gave expert service. I love it when a plan comes together. I'll be back!

Gloria P.

Yelp
Casual atmosphere with lots of comfort foods!! Great pastas and burgers!! Service is great and friendly!! Local gem!!

James M.

Yelp
Always enjoy our dinner-dates at Tuscany, never had a bad experience with the food, drinks or service. We're headed there again tonight!

Susan B.

Yelp
Thay need to update their menu. It's been the same old same old for years! Especially their bar menu. Love the staff but bored with the food! Also clean the dust off the blinds!!!

George M.

Yelp
Excellent service, the waitress was very helpful and accommodating. She answered any questions about food preparations. We were a tether large group but the other staff members jumped in to assist to insure the food arrived on time. We will definitely be back to try other selections on the menu.

Yelp
Went for Early Bird Dinner, which one can get any day before 5 pm. What a bang for your buck! For $15.95 you get soup of the day (2 choices), salad (many dressing options), entrée (about 10 good size selections), coffee or tea and choice of several flavors of ice cream (or one can spend $1.50 extra for a large round piece of scrumptious cheesecake). House wine is $5.50/glass. We had Parmesan Crusted Tilapia (with roasted potatoes instead of rice) and Salmon Ala Tuscany (with artichokes, olives, tomatoes in lemon butter sauce over rice). Both were delicious and large portions. The ambiance is pleasant. The service is very good. We just discovered this gem which seems to be quite popular with loyal repeat customers. You may want to discover it too.

Yelp
I have frequented this eatery a half a dozen times in the past decade. I have been here alone, with my ex Bro-in-law, and with my whole family. Each time has been an enigma as per the food. I guess it averages, good. I know it's subjective but I feel that I'm a good medium for judging overall quality of food, like most Yelpers that have over 30 restaurant reviews with eclectic tastes. That being said, I ordered the mushroom caps as an appy. They were excellent. I should have ordered two and made it a meal. But always trying to look positive food-wise, I ordered the Jack Daniels Steak w/a Marsala sauce and roasted potatoes. Average. Sauce was too strong, it overpowered the undersized piece of beef. I cannot pinpoint this place. It falls below the radar In my mind.

Yelp
Ok so lets understand this is not a 5 Star white glove dining establishment but a South Jersey Pub type bistro. 5 of us meeting up the other night and we have a reservation which was honored. They have a dining room near the entrance that looks like an overflow area of banquet area. A spacious bar with TV's etc, high top tables than a dining main dining area by the fireplace area. Jimmy the owner greeted us and was very friendly and hospitable. Seated and fresh bread is presented, specials and a fairly large menu covering every type of Italian comfort food you coup want. Just couple glasses of wine Tonight rather than the normal alcohol infused dinner. No Appetizers but all entrees come with soup of the day or Salad. The salads were good, cold & Fresh while the Soup of the day Tomato Bisque was hot & Hearty. Entrees: Angus Steak Salad was actually a NY Strip cut into pieces over mixed greens fresh mozzarella, peppers Etc. a HUGE portion. A NY Strip steak grilled with steak fries, homemade onion rings, was I was told exceptional. The Prime double cut pork chop was grilled to perfection, with side of pasta was one of the best things at the table. Boneless chicken breast piccata with capers & copious amounts of artichoke hearts was delicious. Veal Saltamboca although not large pieces of Scalapini but smaller pieces with mixed prosciutto, mozzarella, Spinach in a rich brown sauce was excellent. What gets this from 4 to 5 stars was the deserts and coffee OMG. First off Cappuccino with sugar stick and biscoit was hot and fresh as were the other coffees. A sampler of Creme Brûlée, Cheesecake & Chocolate mousse cake were some of the finest well presented items I've had in some time. The rice pudding was also homemade. Staff was very nice and professional while as previously stated the owner Jimmy was a pleasure to meet and speak to. Price points are more than reasonable considering quality & amount of food presented. All and all simply a great dining experience and I would not hesitate to eat here again in the future.

Yelp
We're fairly new to Brick, NJ but since whenever we drive by, the Tuscany parking lot is full, we agreed we needed to try it. We're happy we did. We had a 5:30 early dinner Saturday reservation, and the dining room was already full. Menu included classic Italian dishes as well as some more creative options, at average prices. All five of us (3 adults, 2 children) enjoyed our meals which were well-prepared generous portions. Our selections included Penne à la Vodka, Angus Salad, Land and Sea, Sea Scallops Stemperata, and Cajun Filet Mignon. We appreciated the attention we received from our waitress, especially during a very busy dinner service. She returned to our table several times to offer soda refills and ask if we needed anything else. I regret not catching her name, but was able to speak to the manager (owner?) on our way out, to offer compliments and thanks.

Yelp
This is the third time I've been there and the past 2 years it is extremely disappointing service and the food is just not the way it was a few years ago we ordered Caesar salad that was it lettuce and Caesar dressing no croutons sorry Caesar salad comes with croutons everything else mediocre to say the least and I will not be going back there again

James M.

Yelp
Everything here was fantastic. Food was great and service was excellent! We called to make a reservation because we heard this place gets packed and glad we did. I would definitely return again and again. Not one thing bad about our visit, would 100% recommend this place for a nice night out. Appetizers (calamari was outstanding) and entrees were all delicious and they also had options for younger children.

Tania L.

Yelp
The food and service was great. My husband and I had a great evening. I would definitely recommend this place.

Yelp
We found the restaurant on Yelp. It was another great recommendation. All of us enjoyed our meals and even had some for the next day. The staff were nice to interact with. Definitely, a place to bring a couple of family members and/or friends.
