The Best Dive Bars in Boston | Eater Boston

"When people not from here think of a Boston dive bar, Twelve Ben’s is probably what they’re picturing. No website, bartenders who don’t have time for you to dither over your order, and cheap drinks — what more do you want? How about wood paneling, darts, and a 10 a.m. open time? Like we said, this dive has it all." - Nathan Tavares

I went to Boston with my girlfriends for a trip and this bar was the best part of our entire experience! It was close to our Airbnb and the staff and patrons were so warm and welcoming! 10/10 would go back literally only reason to visit Dorchester!

The best bar in Dorchester! I was visiting the neighborhood on a Sat. night from out of town, and the bartender and clientele were incredibly friendly and welcoming. They even brought in pizza from next door and shared it with everyone. :) Thank you for your generosity!

A great local bar! Mostly regulars. It’s a very casual vibe. Cash only and great prices!

$3.50 for a bottle of Bud and home cooked food for a very reasonable price. They used to open at 8 AM but I believe the hours are now something around 11 AM opening. Mike the bartender is one of the friendliest guys you’ll ever meet. They have a huge parking lot which is a plus in Dorchester. If you are planning on grabbing something to eat remember the kitchen closes at 7 PM.

I just moved back to my home city Dorchester. Years back John Moran was the best of the best bartender we celebrated my cousin Danny 50 the upstairs in function room I was born and raised in Fields Corner and frequently ate with a group of Board Hangers and Mudders . Drywall Hanging. I remember the overfill plates of food and my first time ever eating (Ireland) parsnips. Still such a friendly and comfort atmosphere even though I don’t know anyone. Staff Friendly as well as patrons. Really good comfort food . I went St Patrick day one year Corned Beef and Cabbage!!

Staying at an Airbnb close by, my wife and I were trying to find a good bar in the area to have a few drinks. A couple came up with a quick internet search but they all looked like a chain or a restaurant with a bar. Then I came across Twelve Ben’s Tavern. No photos of the inside but all the reviews mentioned good food and an atmosphere of a bygone era. The reviews did not disappoint. Once we opened the door we knew we were at a a good place. Wraparound bar, lots of old men sitting around, drinking and laughing. The bartender was friendly and welcomed us right away. Had a few drinks and a good chat with him through the night that made our trip that much better. We left feeling very grateful and with a desire to come back as many times as possible. Cannot say enough good things about Michael, the owner and bartender who charmed us completely, providing stories and laughs throughout the duration of our visit alongside excellent service. Classic ‘cheers’ experience without the tacky commercialism. Would highly recommend to anyone willing to listen!

There's hardly any safe true dive bars. This is one. You feel comfortable here. Eddie the bartender is friendly. The food is good. Plus there's free parking.
