The Best Breweries, Food, and Drink to Try on the BC Ale Trail | Eater

"A small, highly regarded brewery in Port Alberni known as a hidden gem; its adventurous beer lineup is matched by an innovative kitchen focused on creative pizzas with distinctive names and ingredients, such as the Beetnik (walnut-beet pesto, goat cheese, and arugula) and Wurst Place to Live (beer-poached brat, caramelized onion, and beer cheddar drizzle)." - Vox Creative

Really enjoyed my visit to Twin City Brewing. The Sweden beer was smooth and refreshing, and the goat cheese pizza was a standout — wood-fired and full of flavour. Easily one of the best place in town. Great atmosphere, friendly service, and solid craft beer selection. Definitely worth a stop if you’re in the area.

Would have taken half off for the Basque Cheesecake. The cheesecake was not even Mildly sweet and very crumbly and dry. The chocolate gnache helped balance it but once it was gone it left a chunk of ricotta. The atmosphere is great if not a little loud but that's to do with the consistent crowd and table top games. The drinks were great, we got the margarita and the Radler. Bother were well made and fresh. We got the small Maui Wowee and it came out crispy, hot and delicious. Would love to try different flavors. The staff was ready for recommendations but gave space to enjoy the food.

I had a great time working with Twin City Brewing in Port Alberni, capturing photos, drone footage, and creating a virtual tour to showcase their unique space. Through my company, 360° Immersion, I helped bring out the vibrant atmosphere of the brewery and highlight their award-winning beers. Twin City Brewing offers a welcoming environment, creative brews, and some of the best scratch-made pizzas and sandwiches around. If you’re in the area, it’s definitely worth a visit.

Great beer, great pizza, super awesome staff. I like this place a lot and wish I could come more often. Say hi to Amber because she’s delightful and makes a cool place even cooler!

Hit the brakes and stop here. 4/4 Beers in my flight were perfect. Run of the Mill - IPA, Tickitty Boo - British Pale Ale, Late Bloomer - Strawberry Sour, and the Blackberry Porter. Well done brewmaster(s). ** Shame about the regular who is watching his ticktoks on full blast **

I left a 5 star review years ago, and to be sure, I still enjoy the pizzas and beer. But I had a disappointing experience recently and I reached out twice to them to ask about it and didn't receive any reply. I got wings which I've had before and they've been really good. I was eating them while watching tv and it was dark and I couldn't see them, but they didn't taste as good as usual, the texture was off. I stopped eating them and went to look at them and they were red and pink inside as you can see. Obviously that does not look very good. I'll be giving them a pass for a while, I think, and going to the other two breweries for now. Only because I did reach out twice with no reply.

The team at Twin City is always very welcoming. They offer a diverse draught list of high quality craft beers and their food menu is super tasty, I always enjoy getting a pizza!

Clean crisp tasty beer(s) ✨️. Generally a wonderful variety of beer(s) and they have added cocktails 👏🏾👌🏾. Always worth the visit! 👌🏾 The food is always delicious. The menu has regulars and specials, so it's always fun to go taste their foods! 🤩 They have staff who go above and beyond. The staff treat everyone respectfully, and I've seen when they haven't been respected but they still put the customers first. It is definitely the place to go. You can see why they win awards 🙌🏾🔥 They bring in so many people from all walks and it's such a pleasure to see a local business thrive. What a gem 💎 of a business 🙌🏾

Yelp
Nice little local brewery with way above average food and cool ambiance with board games to boot. Came in on our way driving from Victoria to Ucluelet for a decent beer and dinner after a long day of hiking and driving. We were pleasantly surprised by a small, but nice brewpub with board games to boot. They didn't have any tables for four because of reservations, but we were able to sit at the bar and set our kids up with a game of Battleship while we had some beer and food. The beer wasn't world class, but also didn't disappoint. The unicycle sour IPA, was my standout, but the porter and monster mash IPA were also good. The rest were fine, but not amazing. The food was (if anything) better than the beer. The plain cheese pizza my son got was good and had nicely browned cheese all over. The sauce was a bit on the sweet side, but not unpleasantly so. I'd probably lean more into pizza next time even if it's a bit too carb heavy. The spuds (potato wedges) were only OK. I got the Thai chicken salad, which was spicy with great greens and good chicken. Nice and fresh. My wife seemed to be less enamored of her bahn mi burger, but still said it was good. The service was attentive and happy to accommodate us and our kids. Would definitely come again.

Yelp
There was a good selection of board games. The bathroom was very clean. The pretzel was really good because it wasn't greasy and there wasn't too much salt. The service was friendly and attentive and the cooks made the food super fast. The French press earl gray was very good. And when you added the cream, it felt like the creaminess wrapped around your tongue in a warm delicious hug. The ambiance was perfect and it had indoor-outdoor seating. It was a great family restaurant. It was overall a great experience.

Yelp
This is now our fourth time here, and it is consistently fantastic! Enough that we plan to stop here on our day away from Victoria We had the Maui Waui pizza and the Gnarly Garlies. SO good! The crust was crispy, yet stretchy at the same time, not at all doughy or greasy! Very fresh ingredients, and the pineapple and balsamic reduction perfectly balanced out the saltiness of the prosciutto! The sweet Donair sauce dip that comes with the Garlies was perfect - not too sweet! I honestly think that this may very well be consistently the best pizza I have tasted on Vancouver Island! My husband loved the beer he had as well, enough to buy some to take for home! I enjoyed the French Press coffee. Service was very friendly and prompt, and the restaurant and washrooms very clean! I am glad we stopped in, and we will definitely be back again!

Yelp
One of my favorite discoveries of 2022. We stopped by here on the way to Tofino after and embarking from the ferry in namaiano and I'm so glad my road buddy discovered and suggested this place . Everything was excellent!!! I've never been to a microbrewery that did everything well. I was so surprised at the level of execution from the beer to cocktails to appetizers. Our favorite from the flight of beer we had I believe was the socks with sandals which was a Radler I believe. It was bright and refreshing and lightly sweet with a hint of tartness. We also ordered the loaded spuds which did not disappoint. It was very hardy and satisfying especially with globs of cheddar cheese and bacon.... yum. We also ordered a dozen chicken wings and got half salt and pepper as well as the Gochujang ! The salt and pepper is pretty straight forward . You get what you expect ! But the star of the show was the Gochujang ( Korean spicy and sweet laden wings ). I still have dreams about that sauce . It was unlike anything I've tried before and very addictive . Creamy with the right amount of heat with a light sweetness akin to carnelized brown sugar ( but it doesn't taste like brown sugar ...just that level of sweetness ) hard to describe but trust it was good . I would fly back to Vancouver take a ferry and drive 90min again just to eat these wings . Last but not least I had one of the best cocktails I've had in the last 5 years here . The greybeard was tart floral sweet tart and refreshing ... One of my favorite flavor profile combinations in a drink . Honestly if I wasn't driving I would've probably ordered the other two cocktails and even the mock tail as they all sounded amazing but I had to drive. I would love to come back here again to be able to try some of their pizzas as well as to try their other drinks. If you're ever in the area please please please give this place a try you! You will not be disappointed!

Yelp
Found totally by chance. Great pizza and wings. Many types of beer. Friendly service. Would come back.

Yelp
We'd never heard of Twin City Brewing but they seem to do a variety of beers and quite a few sours. They're a few doors down from Asia Garden Restaurant. We dropped in on a Tuesday afternoon (around 1:30pm) and it was bumping. We'd walked by earlier and there was a line so it seems to be a popular spot for both the locals and tourists. The inside currently only sits three groups but there's another 5 picnic tables outside. Service is friendly and they come by frequently to check on you. 9 beers on tap along with a Merridale Ciderworks cider. They have a small food menu that consists of hand-stretched pizza, lighter fare and a few featured items. - Flight ($9.00 for 4) - we picked the dissimulator (German dopplebock), sparkchaser (smoked red ale), obscura (berliner weisse with blueberry) and sparkling leotard (grapefruit radler). The obscura was our favourite; deliciously sour, fruity and tart. The radler was light and refreshing (apparently, it's their Swedish Gymnast mixed with San Pellegrino grapefruit). More grapefruit than we expected (which we really enjoyed). Even the smoked red ale was solid; nice smokiness that was well balanced. The German dopplebock was the only one that we deemed to be standard fare. Hopefully we'll be able to find their beers around. Can't wait to try more of their sours! 4.5 stars.

Yelp
I came to town for a couple of weeks. I googled 'micro brewery' as I like to try out local suds. I found Twin City at the top. As I entered, the staff was so friendly and I asked what could I do 'order and take out or...' - immediately my server sensed my 'what now look' and walked me through the process. I had a couple of samples and ordered the pizza she recommended. I then was able to grab a table solo and have a pint while I waited for my pizza. I liked the beer and pizza so much - I went back again the next night. Same great friendly service - plus a new pizza and a new pint. I tried the Swedish Gymnast and the German Pils - both excellent. Who knows... I may go three nights on a row. When things are good - keep with it.

Yelp
Sour beers and more sour beers. Moved to town last year and somehow missed out on this Jem (spelled like this cuz they are rockstars) The escape artist is my favorite sour. The Swedish gymnast is a crisp clear mild and refreshing beer that both my bf and I can agree on. Also lots of good stouts. The chicken wings are crispy and flavorful. Best wings in town. Haven't tried much else in the menu other than wings and beer...cuz why mess with a perfect combo? There is lots of outdoor heated steaming. The bathroom is clean. The staff are friendly and cute. :) Thanks for existing.

Yelp
Great beer! Loved the IPA - nice vibe . Try it out. In an unassuming part of town.

Yelp
Love this brewery, great beer, we had a IPA and a pale ale forget the names but they were all great, the IPA especially it was a great balance of citrus and hops with a hint of malt, super clean day drinking IPA, we also had the pipers cider from sea scape for the gluten intolerant, they also had a fantastic dairy and gluten free lettuce wraps, and the pizza were great not truly amazing but a good 4.5* they were just a little doughy, the edges were a little to thick for them to cook evenly, but they were super super tasty, we hand a pork and pear and the beet pesto and goat cheese, the taste was out of this world, I'm defiantly copying this one at home, Super friendly staff, and a typical west coast brewery styling in the tasting room, this will defiantly be a regular stop for me when ever I'm in the area

Yelp
Stopped in on halloween, it was busy with people in costumes (so fun!) and the staff were dressed up too. I loved the coconut sour I had, it was delicious! My husband loved their gear so he bought a nice hat. If I was a local I'm sure I would be in all the time. Food all smelled and looked delicious, too bad I was full when I was in! :)

Yelp
Wow this was our first time to visit Twin city brewing!! We ordered Maui Wowee pizza the large pizza for two and we had leftovers for breakfast pizza. This was a great tasting pizza. The crust was perfect not too thick and just the right amount of cheese. The prosciutto was crispy which I loved. I loved the balsamic drizzled over the top of our pizza. My hubby loves pineapple I am not suppose to eat pineapple, so he had mine. Loved, loved, loved this pizza. We will be a repeat customer!!

Yelp
We made a quick stop here after eating lunch a couple of blocks away. This brewery wasn't around the last time my SO and I found ourselves in Port Alberni, so we were quite excited to discover it. Being the lagerheads we are (we like to check our local breweries wherever we travel), we decided to fill up a growler here since we didn't have time to sip a pint. The taproom looks very modern and hip, and wouldn't be out of place in Vancouver, Seattle, or Portland. There were ten tap offerings, of which four were available for growler fills. We were able to taste two of the beers we were interested in, and ultimately opted for a fill of the dry-hopped saison. The employees behind the bar were friendly and helpful, this making our visit here short but sweet.

Yelp
All around awesome, great beer choice, great grub, friendly staff! Will definitely come back and do it over again. Port Alberni doesnt exactly have many options so I highly recommend checking this place out!

Lincoln P.

Yelp
Not gonna lie I'm a little bias here because all their beer is brewed right here and their food is over the top awesome. It's a shame they ever close and the service is always warm and comfortable, you could be a stranger and this company will make you feel like you new them forever. I don't have a complaint at all, you can take your food home after a huge order and they let you sample what they have made. Also, they support other breweries on the island so they are of community minded. Do I recommend going here?? If you don't come here you are missing out on what will be a land mark for the town it sits in.

Yelp
Things are definitely looking up in Port Alberni! Several new eateries popping up in recent years. We stopped in at Twin City Brewing tonight for some food and refreshment, and it was a lovely experience. Hip modern brewpub vibe, friendly staff, but best of all, great beer and great pizza! I have to admit, the pizza menu sounded a bit weird to me. Which is ok, because I'm not against weird pizza. Do not be put off by this! The weirdest one, I thought, is the Seoul Food. Bulgogi beef and kimchi? On a pizza? Omg, amazing! I had the Beetnik, beet and walnut pesto with goat cheese and fresh arugula. Super delicious. Everyone at the table enjoyed their meal, and their beverage. So I think you should give it a try!

Yelp
Can't go wrong with the beer choices or pizza...or pretzels! Odd sounding combos for pizza, but enjoyed every single one! Great flavours, great vibe, great place!

Yelp
Thank goodness. It was looking like a culinary wasteland here but then I stumbled into this place. It was rainy outside but still people were huddled on the patio. I started with a proper beer and then dove into a beer cheese pretzel which tasted like they were serious about this particular dish. Compared to the beleaguered competition in town, this is Mecca.

Yelp
Best beer and food in this area.. been here 3 times and will continue coming because of the service and the quality of food.. Great mixture of fun, food and atmosphere.. I traveled 1,000 miles for the "Wurst place to live" pizza which was amazing..!!! Jessica, Jessie and Riley up front and BJ, Mike and John in the back.. Make sure you visit Twin City Brewing before, during and after you visit this Amazing Port Alberni valley..

Yelp
Twin City is comparable to the best Craft breweries I've been to in beer meccas like Portland or Seattle. I had the westcoast IPA and Thai lettuce wraps today and both were delicious. If I didn't live two and a half hours from this place, I would become a fixture here. Well done guys, keep up the good work.

Yelp
Stopped in here for lunch on our way to Tofino. Pleasantly surprised by the excellent food and beer. Their pizza dough is definitely freshly made, it was one of the best crusts I've had in a long time. Great patio on a nice day too.
google avatar

Veronica Z.

Yelp
Cute place and it was great to try their beer. But the pizza was rather inedible. The flavor of the dough was underwhelming and the texture was like a harden paste. The dressing accompanying the pizza was extremely sweet and tasted like miracle whip. I do NOT recommend at all eating here. Just grab the beer.

Tim S.

Yelp
Stopped by today and the beer, food and service was absolutely fantastic. Corina guided us through the beer selection and menu impeccably. This is our go to restaurant / pub whenever we are in Port Alberni. Keep up the good work Twin City Brewing and Team. Thanks, Tim and Chiaki

Alyssa C.

Yelp
I've always came here when I'm passing by Port. Excellent customer service and we even got some really cool stickers! Great beer! Great times! Thank you so much. Happy June 1st!

Randy R.

Yelp
My first time here. The staff are great, friendly and knowledgeable about their products. Love the Porter Alberni and the Wurst Place To Live pizza. A nice little place in the centre of town. I will be back again to refill my growler.

Irizabesu S.

Yelp
Every time I go I get great service and amazing food! I love how they always have different brews and specials!

Anna J.

Yelp
Best place in town. Fresh pizzas! Awesome environment that's nice and casual. Grab a Growler and a pizza to go. Beer is award winning and well done. Congratulations on a fantastic establishment!

Nihil P.

Yelp
Loved the atmosphere, interior, beer selection, and the PIZZA! Best spot in town! Must check out
