10 Portland-Area (and Road-Trip-Worthy) Drive-Ins for Beefy Burgers and Swirls of Ice Cream

"Twin Peaks Drive-In, the Tucker Road spot in Hood River, has served fresh burgers, a variety of fries, and creamy shakes out of a rustic wood shack since 1950s. Every morning, cooks hand-form fresh meat patties for its juicy burgers, with toppings like the mushrooms and Swiss, grilled jalapeños, and honey bacon. On a clear day, customers on the outdoor patio can see Mt. Hood and Mt. Adams. Twin Peaks has a drive-thru and a walk-up window." - Rachel Pinsky, Eater Staff

Google
I absolutely loved this small mom and pop restaurant. It's located about five miles from the interstate and off the beaten path. Fresh ground beef and patties made on site. Served with a smile. The food was served hot. There is a small airport right across the road from the restaurant, and people will literally fly in and park their planes just to go to this restaurant. I am glad that we made the effort to find this little out of the way restaurant.

Google
Girls were so nice! Service was phenomenal! Food was fresh and wonderful! Greeted with a beautiful face and served by Saniah. Saniah was so fun and rounded up all the girls for a fun picture! Very satisfied! Very great experience and loved out waitress!

Billy Martin

Google
roadside burger and chicken sandwich joint with a beautiful view of Mt Adams, Mt Hood and the local airport with hang gliders taking off. everything is freshly handmade and takes about 20 minutes but totally worth the wait.

Google
Think hole in the wall food place. The one only the locals know about and they go there routinely because the food is so good. You're not going there because you're seeking out the best environment you've ever been in your life! However the outdoor seating and the view of small planes taking off from the airport on a sunny day is truly a great environment. Seating is pretty close together and can be directly in the sun depending on how many people are there. The shakes are completely worth it! The burgers are straightforward and good.

Google
Off the beaten path is usually where you'll find the spots that have been doing a thing, and have perfected that thing. Twin Peaks crafted a burger so pure it is a snapshot of an era long put to memory. That is the road side burger, and that is what Twin Peaks drive-in has been. Right on the side of the road in the majestic landscape between Mt. Adams and Mt. Hood in an unassuming building is a drive-in that has been making burgers since the 1950's at the peak of the American road trip era. Hand pressed hamburger is the heart and soul here, Twin Peaks has over a dozen burger options I kept to the ¼lb with cheese and I can tell you there wasn't a single disappointing bite. Twin Peaks drive-in delivers a genuine burger made by genuine people. Eat the Burger.

Google
Breathtaking views! Surprisingly, super delicious burgers! Great stop if you’re in the area. Hopefully it’s a clear day and you can see both mountains! Really delicious chocolate shakes

Steve

Google
Had a great burger at a great price but I waited one hour after the order to get the food. It was worth the wait. Had a fantastic jalapeño burger. Fortunately they are at the end of a runway with plenty to watch. A beautiful day with a lot of traffic going by makes it a bit noisy.

Google
Great little roadside diner/cafe. Their specialty is burgers, and their burgers are delicious! They also have a few other sandwich and fried items, as well as shakes and delicious fresh-squeezed lemonade. The place seems pretty popular with locals, but service was prompt and polite. Drive-through service is available, as well as online ordering in advance. Highly recommended.

Yelp
These guys are rad. I had ordered online a much-anticipated burger and fries after a long day at work, perfectly timing my pickup for when I was off. Then I proceeded to lock my keys inside the shop where I work. The woman working called me to make sure I knew my food was ready, and I explained the situation. I called on my way out there, as I was going to arrive a few minutes after closing. She said I could definitely still pick it up, and that the cook was offering to remake everything for me so it was fresh. These two made my night - they were genuinely kind and caring about their customer which is rare. Thank you, I'll be back!

Yelp
Picked up some friends at the airport and we came here for lunch. Omg sooo yummy. Had cheese burger and tots shared with hubby. Friends have mushroom burger and regular burger. Two shakes one huckelberry, strawberry banana. Service was fast even tho they had drive thru.

Yelp
Burger was so delicious and juicy, and pretty big! Onion rings were good but a tiny bit greasy. I prefer seasoned flour rather than the batter onion rings. They're cheaper and faster for the restaurants to make. Service was quick and my server at the counter inside was super nice. I was craving a great and juicy burger and this place crushed it! Sitting outside was nice and parking was really easy. I'll be back!

Keith A.

Yelp
The food here was great! The hamburger had a real patty, not a wafer thin poor excuse of a piece of meat! And real lettuce and tomato. I loved this burger and the real milkshake too! Ordering was easy and we enjoyed watching the sail planes being towed up from the airport across the street and watching them fly overhead and then landing again. We will definitely be back.

Yelp
SO good. So glad we found it while In the area. Burgers and fries were delicious and the service was even better. We were going camping and the wait was 20 minutes and we easily walked to the corner store and back and got what we needed and our food was done. Nice view while eating and just delicious food and great experience.

Yelp
Perfect lunch stop while driving along the Hood River Fruit Loop! We stopped in around 1pm on a Saturday. It wasn't too busy. We ordered from the patio area. They do have a drive-thru as well. They have a gravel parking area and restrooms available behind the restaurant. They have quite a few burger options available. Their current advertised burger is the 'fried pickle'. We ended up ordering the jalapeño cheddar burger, bacon cheeseburger, crinkle cut fries, onion rings and a vanilla malt milkshake. Our order took about 20 minutes. There were about 3 orders ahead of us. Not too bad. The burgers were cooked perfectly and the buns nicely toasted. You could tell the burgers weren't frozen patties. They definitely tasted fresh and hand-pressed as advertised. The crinkle cut fries were really good. Not sure if it's seasoning or the oil they use, but they were the best tasting crinkle cut fries I've ever had. Sounds weird, but it's true! The onion rings were really good too. The vanilla shake had great flavor, but it didn't really look like actual ice-cream. Looked more like soft serve, but no complaints here, it was delicious! Overall a great first visit! We'll definitely be back. Highly recommend.

Yelp
We are at least once a week customers at Twin Peaks. We have our favorite things mine garlic Burger and onion rings. Food is consistently good until about 3 weeks ago. They changed the onion rings. The hand battered onion rings went to a dryer coating with less flavor. I am considering changing my order. Please if it isn't broken don't fix it.

Yelp
This is a great place to grab a delicious burger and enjoy the view of the mountains! I had the green chili burger, and it was great! A few weeks ago I came for my first time to get a shake (went with blackberry) and it was delicious! Tasted fresh, was the right level of milkshake thickness, and was a great price! As a newbie to Hood River, I will definitely be frequenting this place more now that I've discovered it! Staff were very friendly as well!

Yelp
The best burger so far. Quick service dog friendly and relaxing. Local food. Nice location

Steve F.

Yelp
Great burger shack food. I can't tell if the burger patties were frozen or not, but there's a good chance the chicken was battered on-site. Good tater tots and fries. Service was quick and friendly. Pro tip: order online when you're about 20 minutes away and your order should be ready when you arrive. It's really 4 stars for the food and 6 (yes, six) for the location, which is right under the departure end of Hood River Airport. Perfect views of the taxiway action and departing aircraft. If you're a pilot or aviation fan, it's a great place for a stop. Highly recommended.

Yelp
The food was so good! My husband daughter and myself ate lunch here on the way home to central Oregon. The food was excellent! Burgers had so much flavor and my daughter's chicken strips were delicious. The onion rings weren't very crispy but still very good. We will definitely come back when we are in the Hood River area.

Yelp
This is probably my favorite quick bite I've found in the area. Very midwestern flat top burger joint feel. Simple menu, everything is bomb, and the price is right. Highly recommend if you're looking for an awesome burger that doesn't break the bank.
google avatar

Chelsea C.

Yelp
Great spot for lunch if your out hunting for fruit, food was hot and fresh they were busy and it was all still great! Ice cream was amazing!! And the view was a blast!
google avatar

Amy S.

Yelp
Great stop on the way back into town from the lake. Awesome selection of burgers and sandwiches. Nice to order online or the kiosk with the option to customize your toppings. I was disappointed the curly fries were only seasonal and they didn't have a huckleberry milkshake but the Oreo flurry was perfection (the chocolate shake was extremely underwhelming). Great tots though! Won't be our last time!
google avatar

Tina M.

Yelp
Twin Peaks has the best milkshakes. They created one for me, it's called "KRACK" Tricia gets me my own flavor, so she is ready when I arrive! Excellent, thank you Twin Peaks!
google avatar

Heather H.

Yelp
Great food and shakes! The garlic burger is off the hook! I've never had a burger with that much garlic. I loved every bite.
google avatar

Jason M.

Yelp
For a small drive up burger joint they knocked it out the park for me! Great service and the milkshake was very thick and tasty...I will be returning to this place when I'm driving to portland again! It's definelty a local joint I could tell but we didn't have to wait long for our food
google avatar

Lynetta H.

Yelp
Good food, good views. Order indoors, the credit card reader on the kiosk outside doesn't work.
google avatar

Kris S.

Yelp
This was a perfect stop for our hungry family of 5. Great burgers, out of this world curly fries and delicious soft serve! Not too mention the outstanding service and killer views. We will definitely be back next time we're in Hood River. Thank you!

Yelp
I wanted to like this place, but it seemed like from the second we pulled up it had everything working against it. First of all the weight was about 45 minutes when it didn't look that busy also, they don't seem to have anybody they can take your order. Everything has to be submitted online, and to be honest, I hate that I think one of the reasons to support smaller local businesses if you have an experience where you have human interaction and I think it's really hurting them only having the online ordering when it supposed to be a classic experience the food was good, not great. Prices were higher than I'd like to see for a standard drive in burgers place. I'll always leave shorter reviews for things. I'm not thrilled on, but before warned if you are, can eat here you might as well order ahead on the drive, rather than waiting for you, load their webpage and order on your phone.

Debby C.

Yelp
Went through the drive thru... heard the food was soooo good, but waited at the drive thru for about 10 minutes without seeing any person to take my order.

Yelp
First off, I love Twin Peaks and have been a long time customer. But recently I did not have a good experience. I went inside to order and the owner was working the register. She was coughing and sneezing without covering her mouth and without washing her hands before interacting with customers/serving food. On top of that I ordered the special that was advertised on the board outside and she didn't know what was on it. As a result I got a burger without cheese because she didn't ask if I wanted cheese, and the description wasn't posted anywhere. This is not a super huge deal, but is slightly annoying. Obviously I could of asked for a description, but it was busy and she kept having to ask the cook, who was busy with a line full of tickets so I was trying to not be a pain. Lastly, I found a office staple in my burger. Now, I don't think this was intentional, I think they maybe staple the receipt to the bag or something and it fell out onto the burger. But either way, there was a staple in my burger, luckily it was visible so I didn't find it the hard way. But had it not been visible I easily could've eaten it. I'm hoping the owner will see this and remember to close her mouth when coughing/sneezing and to wash her hands because that's just GOOD hygiene when you're serving people food. I'm also hoping they will eliminate whatever the source of the staple was because that really seems like a potential ER trip/lawsuit waiting to happen and the solution is very simple to avoid that. I've been coming here for over 15 years and I always tell all my out of town friends to stop for a burger but I think it'll be awhile before I'm back or before I can recommend it to friends again.

Yelp
In my enthusiasm to chow down, all y'all get is a picture of these two onion rings and menu. Rest assured, food was delicious! My friend and I split a large order of onion rings and burgers. Burgers were super fresh and juicy. Onion rings were crispy and hot. It was a clean establishment and a great trek off the highway .
google avatar

Yelp
Staff is helpful and down to earth. The place has no "airs"; it just offers tasty food at good prices. I fear they are undertipped because the place seems so simple and basic. The cooks attend to your order assiduously and deserve love.
google avatar

Yelp
This is a great side of the road find! Both my partner and I had the blue cheese bacon burger and it was the perfect amount of blue cheese to burger ratio, no skimping on the cheese here! He got the tots and I got the curly fries and we both were happy with our choices. My daughter's chicken was a bit over done but she happily ate it. My son's grilled cheese was melty goodness. Make sure to order at the kiosk to save yourself time. We also got shakes to go and they were each delicious. The butterscotch shake was pure joy in a cup!
google avatar

Melissa B.

Yelp
Twin Peak's has been in HR forever. It is a little on the spendy side but the burgers are good. Lots of burger choices. Not sure a tourist needs to seek this place out... but for locals, it is one of the only restaurants on the outskirts of town.
google avatar

Gaby B.

Yelp
Kinda sketch looking building in the (kinda) middle of no where hood river. Their fried chicken sandwiches & breakfast burrito are super good tho! Great quick bite after or before any hike in the area.

Sofia D.

Yelp
Food is nothing special and hasn't been too great under the new management. My fries were a mixture of golden brown and way undercooked. My hamburger had almost no taste to it. The staff WILL forget at least one item in your order, so check everything before you leave (the customer in front of us also came back to get a forgotten item). To the management: PLEASE get yourself together.
google avatar

Rachelle T.

Yelp
Love their food and shakes. Always make a stop here when in the area and they are quick with great service. There's plenty of outdoor seating unless you want to make a quick drive thru stop. Fries are so crispy, which are my favorite and corn dog is a great snack. They have an easy digital screen ordering menu you can put everything you want and pay on there and they will bring it out to you.

Yelp
I was looking for a diner or somewhere small and local to stop while driving through hood river and came along twin peaks. Drove twenty minutes, the reviews made this place seem like an awesome diner. My boyfriend got a bacon cheeseburger, which ended up being around $9 and it didn't come with fries. There was an up charge for the bacon, cheese, and onions on the burger. The food portions were small for the price. I usually don't write reviews but I feel like I was ripped off because a lot of the other reviews were mentioning how relatively cheap this place was. Besides that, the lady who was working was kind. This place is also NOT A DRIVE IN. It's a drive thru- has a little place to sit inside and a little place to sit outside. I hope to write this review to help other people out who are considering going out of their way to drive here like I did.

KA A.

Yelp
Best Place to eat in Hood River, even get to watch the planes land and take off across the road.

Shannon P.

Yelp
Usually I am happy with the burgers and sandwiches at Twin Peaks, and we like the shakes, but we had a really greasy and overcooked grilled cheese sandwich. I don't know if it was bad grease or the cook - I hope it was a one-off.
google avatar

Christine H.

Yelp
Waited almost 10 minutes at window before someone came to take our order. We were only one in line. Waited over 45 minutes just to get one hamburger. If it weren't for the fact my husband didn't want to leave I would have asked for my money back. Not worth the wait at all!
google avatar

John B.

Yelp
OK burgers but the cumbersome ordering process left us quite unhappy. You are asked to order from a kiosk which we did from diner #1 through diner #4. Then because the same system takes call-in orders, one of us got bumped to the bottom. Result: the three of us had finished our meals before diner #4 was served. That's a stupid process that drives this kind of result. Very disappointe.

Melissa E.

Yelp
First impressions were good as they were open on Labor Day. Liked the kiosk ordering, even though we saw several people not be able to figure it out while there. It is a bit far out of town/off the highway for anyone just passing through town, but if you are already there it isn't too bad to take a drive. Food was decent and for having only a couple people the wait wasn't as bad as it could have been. I'd go back and try some of the more interesting combos, the fried pickle burger of the month sounded pretty good.

Krissy F.

Yelp
I'm not sure what happened to the quality of their food but yesterday's was kinda gross. The milkshake and fries were good but our hamburgers weren't all the way cooked. I drove over 20 minutes just to get my food then to drive home and bite into a half raw burger. So gross!! Apparently I wasn't the only customer with half cooked burgers according to Facebook. Not sure if I'll go back unless it's just for ice cream
google avatar

Eli S.

Yelp
Dinner quality food in a drive through. Delicious burgers and fries with a great list of options and add ons. Really cute place too.
google avatar

Andrew E.

Yelp
We chose this place because we thought burgers at a drive-in would be relatively quick before our rafting trip. The kiosk wasn't working, and no one answered the window. At the time only one group of two was waiting for their food and no one else waiting. We ordered online in two groups. One group said they would get their food after 15 minutes and our group said it would take 30. The first order came in about 20, and after waiting for 45 minutes we finally got someone to answer the window. They said it would be another 15 minutes. The worst part was seeing two groups order after us and get their food before us, not to mention 3 cars drive through and get their food as well. We were 4 people total, and didn't order anything crazy. We wasted about an hour and left with no food for half of our group, because we were going to be late to our trip. We didn't even have enough time to stop anywhere else because we wasted so much time.

Elizabeth M.

Yelp
We used to love Twin Peaks, but over the last year it's become very disappointing. Fries are limp and greasy, burgers and overcooked and limp. I've ordered mushrooms to be added to my burger a few times and they are always raw, which is really unusual on a burger. Cheese is not melted on burgers, just placed on cold. In addition, we've gone about 5 times in the last year and 4/5 of those times they've gotten something wrong with the order: a missing item, wrong burger toppings, or the wrong type of burger (garden burgers instead of Impossible), all things that really just make this place less enjoyable. Many times we've ordered 45 min in advance and gone to pick up at the designated time, and still had to wait 20 or so more minutes for the order to be ready. All this to say, we are sad that a place we used to love has now become a place we probably won't go back to, after many attempts to still love it.
google avatar

Steve W.

Yelp
View: epic Staff: epic Shakes: epic Burger:EPIC I got a mushroom Swiss and the rooster got a straight cheeseburger. We discussed and decided they were the best burgers we have had ever. We are considering moving here for regular access to these burgers.
google avatar

Steve C.

Yelp
Got the bacon burgers and I got curly fries and my lady got the cheese bacon fries. All I will say is they make those fries crispy for sure. The bacon was super crispy as well. Overall the burger was pretty good. The place was super busy so I don't hold any of it against them. I've had better burgers but definitely not a bad spot to get one
google avatar

Edward K.

Yelp
This is one of the best places in Hood River to get that greasy cheeseburger, tots, curly fries, or milkshake you've been craving after a long bike ride, hike, or night of drinking. This is a hole-in-the-wall. Very small and very local. Twin Peaks is located on Tucker Road overlooking the Hood River Airport. So, tourists, it's a little far from downtown and the waterfront. But come to the "The Heights"...Hood River's other downtown...or check out Hood River's excellent antique auto and air museum (W.A.A.A.M) and then stop in at Twin Peaks. Seating is limited inside, which is only an issue during the off-season. During good weather, there's plenty of outdoor seating overlooking the airport. Twin Peaks is incredibly busy during the summer month's when the air meusem is having its monthly fly-in, but the fly-ins are really fun events and perfect for the family. Additionally, Twin Peaks serves an excellent breakfast. A lot of people in town forget about their breakfast and only think of them for their hamburgers. Two dings for Twin Peaks. The first is the parking lot. It's very pot-holed. It would be awesome if they could pave it. And secondly, the ventilation is terrible inside. Even if you are only inside for 90 seconds to pick up a to-go order, you will come out smelling like fried goodness.

Donna K.

Yelp
THE BEST BURGER IN HOOD RIVER What could be better..............burgers................tons of "potato" options.............all kinds of different fries............plus O-rings..............gotta love them! AND shakes!
google avatar

Brandon L.

Yelp
Great little spot! Great burgers, and especially great fries in any style you like (curly, waffle, etc). The kind of tiny local joint you pray will make it. Things to know: it's a bit of a ways off the freeway, not super far but enough that it's worth mentioning. Not a ton of seating, but in good conditions patio seating helps. Thumbs up. Had veggie options, and GF buns too.
google avatar

Miranda B.

Yelp
What's not to like? Delicious burgers, prepared freshly. Hot yummy fries. Thick chocolate shakes. A few of the airport where you can watch the planes on a clear day, sitting outside on the patio. Mount Hood and Mount Adams in the distance to offer great views. It's a small place, with a gravel parking lot, and if it's busy it won't be super fast, but it's worth the wait. It's a good spot for lunch if you have just visited the Auto and Air museum, only 5 minutes away.
google avatar

Justin F.

Yelp
Best smash burgers around, nice people, convenient drive thru for take out, and the prices are very fair especially compared to a lot of more touristy places nearby.

Adelina B.

Yelp
My stomach is shriveling up. I ordered a plain chicken sandwich and regular fries. They were so dry. The chicken sandwich's dryness was my fault because I removed everything that could have made it better, but the fries were like the worst mcdonald's fry you could find x10. Aside from the dryness the chicken was alright, but there was 2 chicken strips in between a bun rather than some sort of patty...wasn't fun to hold onto. On a better note- their bathroom was great. More of a bathroom stop and not a lunch spot.
google avatar

Brittney L.

Yelp
Did the 1+ hour drive out here for the views and a recommended burger. We're so glad we did... the burgers were hot, fresh and had the home made taste with the joy of not making it yourself. Every burger component is important but I especially liked the soft burger buns, hot patty, tangy pickles, crunchy iceberg lettuce, and savory/sweet spread.... so basically everything about their burger. Curly fries were hot and seasoned well too. Seating area isn't fancy, but when the burgers and fries are this good, who needs aesthetics any way??
google avatar

Sheena V.

Yelp
Meh food, especially for the price. Charged us for tiny containers of ranch for dipping (which was gross, obviously bottled ranch). It was so greasy, I was in pain. The burgers were said to be (and made to look like they'd be) huge, they were very small. Shoe string fries, greasy, bland, and soggy. The lettuce was actually brown and rotten, I picked most of it off. Should've gone to Carl's Jr lol!
google avatar

Hayley R.

Yelp
After finding this place we stoped off had fish fries, burger fries, and chicken ranch salad , it was 3 miles from freeway. Food was delicious and waitress was very friendly, food arrived fast. We ate outside. Inside a little run down.
