Tacos In Dallas: Where to Find the City’s Best | Eater Dallas

"This beloved (and nationally acclaimed) taqueria recently moved to a brand new home in the Bishop Arts District, where its namesake taco still shines as one of the city’s finest examples of tacos de trompo. The taco al pastor’s northern Mexican cousin eschews the chile- and -achiote-based dressing of pork al pastor for a paprika-heavy marinade that’s punchy with pinches of smokiness and not a pineapple in sight. Whatever else you order, request the Monterrey-style campechana: trompo meat and beef mixed with white cheese on a flour tortilla made a couple miles up the road." - José R. Ralat

Google
Twisted Trompo was an absolute lifesaver! We stumbled across this spot in Downtown Dallas, and I’m so glad we did. The food was really good flavorful, fresh, and definitely hit the spot. If I had to describe it, I’d say it’s a solid Mexican restaurant with a twist. Whether you’re in the area and need a quick bite or just craving some good Mexican food, this place is worth checking out. Great service, tasty food, and a chill vibe can’t ask for more.

My teenage daughters and I walked here from our hotel a few blocks away. We don't eat meat but we were able to find some very good stuff on the menu. Portion size, food taste, atmosphere, and service were all great.

Google
I had a fantastic experience at Twisted Trompo! The food was incredibly tasty and felt authentically traditional. I tried the tacos with carnitas and chicken, both were flavorful, juicy, and perfectly seasoned. You can tell they put real care into their ingredients and preparation. On top of that, the service was outstanding friendly, attentive, and fast. Definitely a spot I’ll be returning to. Highly recommend!

Google
I had the traditional street tacos. The tacos were amazing!! The only thing was the rice, I bit into some hard rice. Maybe it was an off day. My family had the beef quesadillas and Cuban torta, with no complaints. Try the PASTOR. The meat was very tender and flavorful.

Google
The twisted fries were the best thing I purchased from here. Elotes was okay, needed some seasoning, maybe add some more cheese. Quesabirria tacos were small so I got 5. The rice needed seasoning too. Beans were ok. Churros has caramel in the middle. They were delicious. Island rum punch was okay, it was sweet and didn't have much alcohol. It was still good though. We spent $80 but we ordered a lot so we could try different things on the menu.

Google
Typical downtown Dallas restaurant. Easy to get in and out. Decent menu for something quick after work. Beer and cocktails. Food is fine and service is quick. Tacos a little on the small side even for “street tacos”. Very under seasoned given the vibe the place is going for.

Google
My boyfriend and I walked into this place without reading reviews. Spur of the moment on our Dallas trip. The food was AMAZING!! We loved every single thing we got here. The atmosphere was pretty cool for fast food Mexican. Also, Trompo? Are you kidding me? How cool! The counter service was super friendly and very informative on what was inside everything. Food was delicious, the drinks were too!

Google
Good Tacos. Service is super fast, I like the extra rice and beans in my plate. An excellent idea to continue preserving the authentic Mexican tradition to prepare street tacos with two tortillas, I love it. As soon we walked inside the door we heard a Hello and that is a good gesture to customers. The only two things I didn't like: 1. The onion and cilantro were all mixed up so I couldn't put cilantro in my tacos. 2. No parking available at the front. We had to park far away from the building. After all the taste of the food was really good.

Yelp
Good services, you deserve a good impression as well. We stopped here for lunch while shopping in the area. We had a couple of questions about the menu and the staff was happy to answer them. We all ordered the 3 street tacos each and they were excellent! We will happily stop by here again when we are in the area.

Yelp
We have ordered here almost every weekend for weeks. Never disappointed. The tacos are so god. Plenty of flavor and just so filling. Love the double tortilla. The limes and cilantro, onions are always fresh. The horchata always hits so damn good.

Yelp
My first Tim trying this place ! Good Late Night find . Food was hot, tasty & fresh ! Will return.

Yelp
Came to visit based on a work trip. The restaurant was fairly empty, but located in a great spot downtown. The server was friendly enough, offering suggestions for what I should try. I ended up ordering the three taco plate with chicken. Overall, my meal was OK But nothing too else standing for Mexican food in Texas.

Yelp
Fantastic spot for trompo and lengua tacos with great sauces. Industrial vibe with nice Mexican touches like the virgen of Guadalupe on the wall. Service was quick and we really enjoyed it during our downtown Dallas food crawl. The grilled peppers and onion were a great touch!

Yelp
Great flavors but tiny portions The carne asada was well seasoned and tender. The salsa had a nice tangy kick. Wish the portions were bigger for the price. Still a tasty experience

Yelp
I want to be straightforward: the customer service here is top-notch. The atmosphere and the staff were amazing, but the food was a huge letdown. Honestly, it looked better than it tasted. The burrito I had was the worst I've ever eaten; the meat was super dry and lacked any flavor. I ended up giving my meal to a homeless person because I couldn't finish it. When a worker came by to check on me, he was so cheerful that I didn't want to hurt his feelings, but I was really disappointed, especially with the four-star rating I'm sorry never again.
google avatar

Yelp
Casual atmosphere. Very modern and clean. Counter service. Reasonable pricing. We ordered tacos, twisted chips (similar to nachos), and elotes. Everything was delicious. It will definitely be added to our list of places to go back to.

Yelp
Craving tacos, I didn't feel like driving somewhere so Doordash was my option. I decided on the 3 taco plate with the carnitas, steak, and barbacoa options. Also did a pair of lengua tacos and a breakfast chorizo/egg taco. The delivery kept getting pushed back until around the 45 minute mark when the bag was delivered to the front desk. Digging in, the barbacoa and lengua were my favorite. The carnitas and steak were dry so the verde salsa and lime squeeze went to the rescue and lifted it up. The verde salsa has a kick and compliments the tacos well. As for the breakfast taco, that never arrived as the restaurant doesn't serve those after breakfast hours. They probably should make that clear on the app when ordering. The rice and beans that came with the order were alright. The rice was ok, the beans had some flavor but very runny. I mixed both together to eat since they were mid on their own; much better when mixed. This seems to be a convenient and easy option when in a quick need of tacos. Hopefully next time I'll get to try the breakfast tacos. But I'll probably venture elsewhere for tacos unless I'm in a pinch.

Yelp
Great food & service Luv breakfast tacos with green salsa. Egg and chorizo my favorite. Lunch tacos are good, queso and chips a must with tacos. Quiet at breakfast, lunch crowd busy.

Yelp
Had the pastor tacos around 7pm on New Year's eve. They were super flavorful. Rice could have been a bit better but overall food was great and customer service was great too
google avatar

Jen K.

Yelp
The place is nice enough. The service is good. The food came out quick. It was a Sunday morning so they were not very busy, but overall the food was bland. Not something that I would have thought. The elote came in a bowl that was too small and when I mixed it up corn went all over the table. There was a lot of water on the bottom too. There didn't seem to be enough cream for as much corn as I was given. The corn screamed for salt. The hot sauce used on the corn was good and seemed to be throughout the corn. The tacos were good. I had a steak and a al pastor. Both needed some salt, and I really wish that the pastor had some pineapple on it. Overall the tacos weren't that bad. There are a lot of taco places in the metroplex. Neither one of us loved the place but we decided that we would give them another try thinking that they just had an off day.

Yelp
Awesome taco spot with fresh everything. Love the trompo and street taco deals. This stuff used to be so much cheaper but, it is what it is. Pork trompo freshly sliced and csrne asada grilled by the slabs instead of chopped. Salsa's are good too. Pretty solid taco spot right across the fed building.

Yelp
I was only in Dallas for four nights and three of the nights I came here! It was an easy walk from my hotel and after tasting the food the first night I knew I was gonna be back. First night I tried the Birria tacos. They were small but packed with flavor. Of course I got a peach frozen margarita which was absolutely phenomenal. The next couple of nights, I tried a variety of tacos, including Carnitas and Al Pastor. Everything about this place was top notch from the service to the food to the drinks.
google avatar

Cleapatra C.

Yelp
A friend and I pulled up around 1am or so...service was quick and the food was phenomenal. I liked the vibes on the inside and will have to come back during the day. We ordered tacos, churros, chips and guacamole.
google avatar

Nirsh A.

Yelp
I came here for lunch while I was in Dallas for a work training. I wasn't super hungry so I literally just got one taco and the elote. The taco was delicious. It was super spicy and flavorful, and the hot sauce It came with definitely added to the flavor profile. However, I did not like the elote. It was super watery and just not very flavorful at all. It just seemed like they threw it together really quickly. This isn't a super fancy restaurant so I guess I can't expect too much but overall it was good for a quick lunch, but not sure if I would go back as a regular.

Yelp
I really enjoyed all my food from here! Definitely some of the best food that I've had on my trip to Dallas I tried the elotes, chips and tres dips, and the three taco plate with carnitas, al pastor, and barbacoa. My first bite of the elotes was pretty spicy, but mixed up it wasn't too spicy and I enjoyed it. The dips were all sooo good! The salsa was my least favorite, but the guacamole and queso I loved! The tacos I really enjoyed but they didn't give me salsa for them, which was odd to me. They even asked when I ordered what salsa I wanted. My coworker ate there the next day and they also didn't give her salsa after asking which kind she wanted. The meat was delicious though and so well seasoned! I would definitely eat here again! I might eat here a second time during this trip.

Yelp
Super tasty tacos and great vibe. We had the 5 taco plate which was great value. Came with rice and bean sides. The place was buzzing with good music but not too loud.

Yelp
Great place and portions! We came here during the lunch rush and only had to wait 10 mins. Cashier was super efficient. We both got the Lupe's salad w spicy ranch($9.49)- I got the steak and my friend got the chicken. Both super flavorful and packed with veggies, avocado, and just the right amount of cheese. I would def stop here again for a quick lunch again as the seating is super casual and bright.

Yelp
A team in my office had catered breakfast from Twisted Trompo for a meeting and thats where I tried the breakfast taco's from this restaurent. I had the BEANS & CHEESE taco and POTATO, EGG & CHEESE taco. The potato one was fantastic. Crunchy soft tortilla filled with delicious crispy and eggs well cooked. The bean taco was decent too. The star is definitely the sauces that the order came with. Red and green sauce was spicy tangy and super tasty. Salsa was chunky and fresh. Would love to try other dishes from this restaurant too. The packing was neat and stayed intact. I warmed up my taco's and boom an amazing breakfast to fuel up your day.

Yamilete T.

Yelp
Drove from Houston to try this place out. We got 2 of the dozen tacos order so 24 total. The meat had so much fat and needed to be cooked a little longer. I was hoping it was charro beans instead of refried. Salsa was watery :( Rice was okay! CHURROS WERE OUT OF THIS WORLD! Staff was SO NICE! Atmosphere was great.
google avatar

Yelp
Food, service, Ambiance Very good I recommend there tacos and fries come and visit this place
google avatar

Erbira B.

Yelp
We stopped in for a late lunch when visiting Dallas. We ordered a margarita on the rocks with Tajin rim, very good! Also ordered the small elotes and the Alambre 3 Taco Plate with Trompo meat (chicken, steak, and Al Pastor). Everything was fabulous! Beware, the cream on the elotes was very spicy. Friendly service, quick turnaround and fun decor. They validate parking in the garage across the street. Highly recommend!
google avatar

Yelp
Never fails! I can go back after a long time and the food/drinks are consistent. The twisted nacho and fries are fire !!

Jennifer B.

Yelp
Chicken tacos are flavorful but sadly they arrived cold. The elote leaves a lot to be desired. All it was was a cup of corn with a dollop of sour cream. This was a miss. It has zero flavor.
google avatar

Gia N.

Yelp
DELICIOUS!!!! The 3 tacos plate came with rice and bean. Everything was flavorful and tasty. The service was fast and friendly. They have plenty of seats outdoor and indoor. The best part about this spot is that it opens late. Can't wait to come back!
google avatar

Yelp
Visited in June. Service was quick. Staff was extremely friendly. Food was delicious as were the drinks. Great atmosphere for a large group. I would also enjoy a meal solo at the bar. I would definitely return if in the area again!

Yelp
I went to the commerce location where if your dining in you have to find parking. If it after 6pm you don't have to pay the meter but it's before 6pm you can't use quarter or the park mobile app to pay. You pay after you order your food and they bring the food to your table. The place is small but it's cute little spot. I got the corn taco with Al pastor meat and margarita as it was their taco Tuesday special. The tacos were well seasoned and the onions were grilled to perfection. The refried beans and rice were just OK. I did have one complaint about the advertisement. As you can see on the instagram post it says $9.99 for the 3 tacos and margarita. On the receipt at the bottom, it says $8.99 for the 3 tacos and margarita after 4pm which clearly (in the blue) it was 6pm. Also, on my receipt, it shows that I paid $9.99 and then they added the extra dollar for the margarita. When I asked about the discrepancy, I was told that this is the way the promotion worked. (So I potentially a extra $5 because I got 2 meal).

Yelp
Good option for late night meal. I believe they are opened until 1am, so if you are in downtown Dallas this is a good choice. Staff is very friendly and prompt, they took good care of us. Very affordable.
google avatar

Yelp
Ima give them a five almost because the tromps they were delicious the carnitas were juicy and good I'll definitely be back

Yelp
Visiting from out of town, on business. This place was located within 2 blocks of my hotel so I decided to check it out. It's a medium size establishment and clean, I was greeted by a nice lady that took my order. I decided to try their 5 taco (street size-2 Carnitas, 2 Steak & 1 chicharrones). They come dressed with the standard of lime wedges, onions & cilantro and opted for the red roja salsa and comes with a side of rice & beans. It was quickly prepared. I was not impressed by the chicharrone taco, it lacked texture that I was hoping to still have (like a more firm skin), but it was almost like boiled skin. The carnitas & steak ones were flavorful, but a little on the drier side than I was expecting. I am very picky when it comes to beans and found a few firm (undercooked) beans. The rice was ok. All in all this was ok, but I would be interested in trying some of their other proteins, if I am ever in the area again.
google avatar

Yelp
Speedy service, food is brought out to the table. The indoor seating is plenty. The setting is modern and fairly clean. Tacos were good. Price was good.

Yelp
It was July 4th and we had finally broken free of all the traffic leaving the state fair. The first choice for food was closing early so we decided on Twisted Trompo. The atmosphere was lively, people seemed to be having a good time and the lines moved very quickly. For 2 adults and 1 kid we got: - carnitas torta - kids cheese quesadilla - an assortment of tacos My carnitas was not what I would call authentic and had a weird reddish coloring that seemed artificial. I have grown up eating abuelas' home cooking; I wasn't expecting the same flavor quality as that but this left me overall very deflated. The cheese quesadilla was of the same quality as other similar restaurants. The tacos remain mostly untouched.
google avatar

Glenda W.

Yelp
Nice casual spot to get some tacos & drinks. I enjoy the breakfast tacos. The bacon, egg & cheese is my favorite but I get the others ones too. Street parking is scarce so you may need to find garage parking or just order online & pick it up. You order your food at the register, they give you a number for your table, and they bring you your food.
google avatar

Kelicia C.

Yelp
I was super impressed here! Went right before NKOTB concert to have a couple of drinks and to try the queso! Super delicious! It was busy so we sat in the bar area, and it was Sunday, so there was only one lady. Service was a little slow BUT it was really good service. I def would like to try something else from here soon!
google avatar

Yelp
Parking is unpredictable but they mention that you can park across the street for $5 they have a QR code at the cashier. The staff is always nice and helpful. I've been going to Twisted Trompo for a good 3 years now. This last visit wasn't as good as they've been in the past. I ordered 3 tacos on flour tortillas, carnitas, everything on the side. Although they are super quick my food was cold and the tortilla was even colder. The rice was good but it did have some hard pieces in the mix. Beans were not bad. The tacos were way to oily this time, I understand they will have some but it was overbearing. I also ordered a small Elote and that was also overly oily, it was not a good Elote. I've had some from Elote stands that were 1000x better. Wouldn't get that again. But for the drinks I ordered the vampiro and it was really really good. Exactly what a vampiro should taste like. My favorite is always seeing the virgin mural over the bar area. Would go back for drinks.

Robert M.

Yelp
Great place. Good food. Reasonably priced. Big portions. Convenient location. Hot sauce is great

Zuri A.

Yelp
THE SERVICE WAS SO SWEET! I cannot even begin to say how blessed I was with my experience. The food.. is AMAZING! So tender and tasty. The vibe here is ON POINT! You need to come pls. The price is perfect.
google avatar

Fonzie V.

Yelp
This place is consistent! Consistent in Great Flavor. Consistent in Great Presentation Consistent in a fun filled environment. They have right amount of variety without overpowering the palate or the eyes. The ONLY complain I have is that there is always homeless people lurking and staring. It's uncomfortable. thats the only bad thing.. but I don't think they have control over that. and that is why I leave them a 5 star Rating.. Consistency at its finest.
google avatar

Sabrina C.

Yelp
This place is a gem in the Downtown Dallas area! This place is full of vibrant colors, along with amazing food and drinks! Their meats marinate for 24 hours in authentic Mexican marinades and are then slow-roasted and hand carved when you order. The Trompo Fries are SOOOOOO GOOD!!! You can add any meat to them; I chose chicken. Truthfully speaking, the fries can feed two people easily and the flavors are scrumptious! You can even add things like grilled pineapple and roasted corn. Drinks are available and so is dessert!
google avatar

Nona M.

Yelp
Have been dying for some tacos since I got to Dallas. Walked in and saw the shawarma style meat or trompo. Meat is tender and flavorful. Drink is delicious and refreshing. My tourist heart is happy rn.
google avatar

Ashley S.

Yelp
Came here for lunch with my coworker and ordering was fast plus efficient. I ordered the chicken quesadilla and added a few toppings (which are extra). The quesadilla comes with beans and rice plus salsas. The meal was very delicious and salsas hit the spot (spicy but not too hot). I also ordered the guacamole and chips (comes with salsa) to go and that was tasty as well. I will definitely come back and try out the tacos or nachos.
google avatar

Eduardo C.

Yelp
Probably the best al pastor - trompo - meat I have had from a street taco restaurant. They cook it with pineapple (which in my mind makes it al pastor style meat). The environment is clean, service is swift, and inviting and open late so it's great if you're out in downtown after a game at the AAC or even an event at the Winspear. We had the asada and also an order of birria tacos as well. The birria is very good, but I have had better. Nevertheless, we were not disappointed with any part of our meal. The salsas accompanied by the tacos were hot and on point with the exception of the salsa they give with the chips. That one was more tomato and cilantro than anything else. We would go again, for sure. Solid choice for Mexican street tacos.
google avatar

Mark G.

Yelp
First thing, we ordered for curbside pickup but with the signage, there's not really anywhere to park in front of the restaurant. Second, this is more ToastTab's problem but ultimately falls on the restaurant, if breakfast is only served during certain times, don't have it as an option outside of those times. We placed an order that wasn't able to be filled. Third, the food was just adequate. Nothing special or memorable. We would try it again if we were walking past the place but probably wouldn't go out of our way.
google avatar

Mei M.

Yelp
Excellent salads with a generous amount of meat and avocado. The chicken was very well seasoned and cooked. Spicy ranch was creamy. Not very spicy so, maybe ask for some jalapeños if you need. Place is busy but service is fast. I work nearby and this is a great place if you are really hungry and want a good meal but on a time restraint.
google avatar

Stephen W.

Yelp
This place is located about 2 minutes from the Adolphus hotel and we went here for a Saturday dinner. The vibe is pure Mexican eatery--we've been to Mexico many times and we could have closed our eyes and imagined we were in Playa or Puerta Vallarta. I noticed that the Coke and mineral water were imported from Mexico. Anyway, you order at the counter from a big board, they give you a number, and they bring it to you. They specialize in tacos. The wife and I each got the 3 taco platter. I had barbacoa, chicken and steak. Each had great flavor, but the barbacoa was the best by far. The steak had a lot of fat and the reason for 4 stars in stead of 5 because I had fat. The side rice and beans were delicious. The wife had barcacoa, steak, and al pastor and her steak had a lot of fat too, so if you don't like fat, skip this one. The prices are very reasonable. The service was friendly. Overall, a very positive experience and I definitely would eat here again.
google avatar

Brianne L.

Yelp
Was staying in Dallas downtown and needed to order some food for a certain time, this place allows you to order on toast and worked out very well. I ordered the three taco combo, which comes with rice and bean. I ordered a chicken, Trompo and steak taco. The Trompo was by far the best. The tacos as salsa (verde) were good and if I came back I'd definitely order here or eat in again. One note is that the rice was over cooked to hardness, which was less that desirable, but it happens and I would still come back/
google avatar

Mackenzie C.

Yelp
The food was really good. The elotes were made a little differently than what I'm used to but still good. The quesabirria tacos were a little small but with the rice and beans very full filling. My boyfriend got the chicken and steak Alhambra tacos snd loved them. Gave them a 10/10. Churros were good we never had them with the filling super delicious. Margs we're basic but good. Def would recommend. It was clean and staff was nice. Prices were appropriate.

Yelp
At the Twisted Trompo, you order at the counter, get a number, and the food is brought to your table. The ambiance is pleasant. My daughter and I both had the salad; she had chicken and I had Trompo. We paid $1 extra each for sliced avocado, and it was well worth it. The meat on the salads was the highlight. The flavors were great!
