15 Delicious Stops Along LA’s Metro Gold Line | Eater LA

"A day in LA just isn’t complete without an iced coffee or iced matcha. Two Kids Coffee in South Pasadena offers a minimalist ambiance for a relaxing breather. On a weekend morning, don’t sleep on the breakfast burrito. Located next door is Prospect LA, a culinary bookstore full of “rare and well-done” cookbooks." - An Uong

Cool neighborhood coffee spot with chill vibes, a little shop that sells some cool stuff beyond just coffee brewing tools and coffee beans, and some (limited) comfortable seating inside. There is also outside seating which is especially great during nice days. The espresso I got was wonderful, and it’s always appreciated when they’re served with a shot of cold sparkling water.

Of all the coffee shops in the area of South Pas this particular shop always eluded me. But not this day. Without further delay, let’s begin. TWO KIDS is a small, modern, and bright coffee bar on Mission street situated next to an art gallery. They offer coffee, tea, pastries, and specialty drinks. Moreover, they sell merch, books and coffee bean bags. Interior design and spacious layout were lovely. Customers can ogle on the art with their drinks or chill in the back by the coffee bar beside a wall of blue-bird wallpaper. I was perfunctorily greeted by a female staff. I ordered a hot Brewed coffee. And it has a subpar quality. I wish I can say it’s great but words may choke me. Staff was cordial and professional. Overall, it’s a nice little cute coffee bar that is family and kid friendly.

In Los Angeles, I feel it’s fair to expect vegan milk options at every cafe. There are none here. Their only non-dairy milk is their house made almond milk, which has honey rendering it non vegan.

Love this place. No notes. My guilty pleasure is the coffee soda.

Today I met up with a friend at Two Kids for the first/last time. I love Sharon Jones just as much as the next gal, but the volume was so loud we couldn’t dish the dirt. Since there was only one other customer, I politely asked if they could turn it down just a bit and the woman behind the counter replied “it’s actually at a set volume.” ??!🥴 Instead we sat out front in 90° weather and left with swamp butt. 👎

The coffee and pastry I had were pretty good. The staff was friendly as well. I liked th atmosphere of the place. Wish they had more seating. Although the staff was friendly, the vibe didn't feel as friendly. I would come back but only for take out.

Cool to hang out with people who have the same likes and interests. Paper goods, fine stationary, cards, fountain pens and a free lesson in journaling. Lots of fun and yet intense! Small turn out but one on one with the presenter was amazing! Thanks Rachel for all your insight!

Google
Interesting story behind the coffee shop. Spacious interior and I especially love the outside seating area, a perfect place to spend a lazy afternoon doing nothing or people watching. My latte is up to the standard, it is very difficult to compare them any more since everyone is doing a great job.

Yelp
Two Kids, are more like cool kids of coffee. I'm not from around the area, but I try to stop by when I can! Love their lattes here and recently tried the Philippines Mt. Apo beans, 10/10! Super smooth and good flavor profile! Recommend to try it if you stop by! Easy parking around the shop, narrow walk in, but you can find your way around the shop to wait for your drink pretty easily! My only vice when I come in, I somehow always try to look for a menu to see, but I forget it's not posted lol, so make sure unless you already know what you'll order, there are folded menus by the register . The staff are always helpful, you just gotta ask!

Yelp
This little coffee shop has the greatest dirty chai I've ever had. I want to try other drinks but I honestly can't bring myself to miss out on the chai. Service is the thing that is spotty. I hate walking into a place and not being acknowledged. Like at all. The space is tiny. The employees are right there in front of you and the cashier/counter person was doing things for a full 2 minutes about directly in front of me standing at the counter, before she walked away and never said "hi, be with you in a second" or anything. She did however walk to the front of the place and chatted with a regular or friend for a bit before coming back and still not saying anything to me. The guy making drinks saw that I was just getting ignored and walked over to help me. Got my chai and left with a bad taste in my mouth, despite having a great drink in my hand. I drove the extra 5min to support local but local didn't seem to be supportive of my visit. Been here 3 times and this has happened 2 out of 3 times. Hoping to even the score the next time I come by.

Yelp
Excellent drip, lattes & all other drinks I've ever had here! Any pastry I've ever had here was five stars - delicious. Also, they have a kitchen and I've had their toasts as well, and they were perfection!! Service is the loveliest in town! Friendly, welcoming, engaging and looking to please their customer with their amazing product. The lobby has counter seating, facing the street, which makes for great people watching & talking to strangers. There are other random chairs around for seating in the lobby, as well as Adirondack chairs lining the front of the shop. The lobby also has a refrigerator with some of their to-go products & canned cold items, as well as shop merchandise (t-shirts & hats usually), and many other specialty products, which are really unique and cool, such as ceramic mugs, interesting books, stationary, pens/pencils (Japanese), bags, candles, matches with holders, even rugs at times. Really unique and cool merchandise. The music they play is always cool as well. 50% of the time I'm Shazaming on the DL when I'm there ^_^ lol Parking is really easy around this coffee shop, too. Two Kids is sincerely every one of the five stars I am rating them. It is one of the best coffee shops around and so far there has never been a ridiculous line out the door - thankfully & almost unbelievable, but I'm very grateful for that!

Yelp
Correction on my previous review- the coffee soda is with house made whipping cream (not cream top).
google avatar

Asher D.

Yelp
Two Kids is an expert at everything. From the personable service to the design of everything it is so thoughtful and perfect. Two Kids is the reason why we should support small coffee shops always rather than the bigger chains. They have nice chairs and a good amount of seating. I haven't tried their food. Latte was excellent.
google avatar

Gloria L.

Yelp
I always get almond milk as an alternative milk when I can at coffee shops and I was so happy to hear that Two Kids specialize in their own house-made almond milk. I came on a Monday morning and the place was pretty busy. There are no tables, but they have single seat couches and counters with stools by the window and by the cash register. Not so much a study spot. There is free street parking in front of the shop. I got their espresso with almond milk hot with their house-made vanilla syrup and it was so good. The espresso was rich and their almond milk was creamy and smooth. The vanilla syrup gave the coffee a good amount of sweetness that I enjoyed. I would definitely recommend trying them out!

Caryl Keith B.

Yelp
I ordered the espresso + milk + chocolate, and the server asked me if I preferred almond milk or whole milk. I didn't notice that there's an up charge of $1.50 more for almond milk so imagine my surprise when my total came to $8.00. For a small cup of coffee, $8 is pretty steep. It tasted good but would I come back again and pay $8 for basically an iced mocha latte? Probably not.

Yelp
This is a cute little coffee/tea house in South Pasadena near a collection of gift, antique and specialty stores. Along with coffee and tea, the store also cells ceramics and is connected to the store next door. Like nearly every store in this locale, Two Kids Coffee closes early. Realy early. 1pm during the week and weekend. However, the iced tea I ordered was great (it was an oolong) and very refreshing on a hot day. Service was kind and quick. The interior is very minimalist and well decorated, with some cool wall art near the barista station. Not a bad spot to chose if you are looking for a pick-me-up in the area.
google avatar

Michael S.

Yelp
Still the best in the area. And they have extended hours on Saturday and Sunday--open until 2pm!
google avatar

Mabel T.

Yelp
Hmm not my cup of coffee. I ordered an espresso with milk and would say it was a bit sour for my liking. I'd like to add that my experience was a bit unpleasant but not related to the drink itself. While I was waiting in line the I felt like I was getting more sleepy. Not sure if it was their intent but the lights are pretty dim and there was this one that was sort of strobing light that bothered me the whole time I was there. It was a bit odd that the menu on the wall was faded and they only had the paper one on the counter. I'd say the people there made the place a lot more inviting but I don't think I'll be coming back anytime soon. I would still recommend this spot if to those who like light roast coffees! I prefer dark roast that is smooth with notes of cocoa. Gosh now I sound like a snob!
google avatar

Stanley H.

Yelp
I really really wanted to enjoy this place, but felt it was overpriced and bland. The barista recommended the almond latte because they make their almond milk from scratch. Honestly, if the drink wasn't $7 for a small cup I probably would've thrown it out. it didn't taste good to me at all. Nice service and atmosphere, but likely won't be back.

Yelp
I always drive past this place and finally got a chance to stop in! The main takeaway from Two Kids are they are genuinely friendly people serving up some great coffee and that it is a great place to have a slow Sunday morning. Comfy cozy inside with seating separated by two rooms. They also have a number of chairs outside to enjoy a conversation and watch the people pass by. I liked that they had separate items to buy/window shop. T shirts, notary items, glasses of milk to take home. It's not a loud atmosphere inside which I love and they have bar seating too! I will be back!
google avatar

Shaden M.

Yelp
Funky hispter vibe and they sell some random merch as well. Possibly in the middle of renovations? I wouldn't say it's a good place to work or study as seating is limited. I got a latte which as far as taste is more on the sour/acidic side of coffee gradient if you like that (gives me heartburn unfortunately). Staff is very friendly and ready to answer any questions you may have.

Yelp
Two "smug" brats is more like it. Any time I ask to have my coffee prepared a certain way and it's immediately met with, "Well, we..." - red flag. Any coffee shop in the country offers oat milk - except THIS one. I don't care that you make your own almond milk. I walked in directly towards the counter to see no menus there or on the wall; who the hell is paying attention to anything right by the door (which is where they actually were)? No sugar packets, but they have simple syrup. Great: you run a coffee shop that doesn't have basic things. Nice job going out of your way to be 'different' for no good reason.

Chauncey G.

Yelp
Greatest coffee shop in LA. Quality is top every time. Lovely staff and environment. And if you have your drink there you get to have a real mug or glass.
google avatar

Nicolas J.

Yelp
Not a bad spot, tried the espresso with chai and milk. Tried the monkey bread. Was hoping for more pastry / sweet options but still had given this spot a try. Got lucky with street parking and walked over. Service was decently quick. The interior design is a little weird and not sure the vibe or intent lol. It's kind of a coffee shop but it's not a hang out spot like Starbucks if that makes sense. Still not bad just not something I'd go OUT OF THE WAY for is all :)
google avatar

Afi P.

Yelp
Vibe: Lighthearted unpretentious spot in a cute and quaint area where, sometimes, mommies congregate and relax. **caveat: I didn't know where I was. I was randomly in a city called Alhambra and I just put "espresso" in Yelp and this place was closest with the best reviews. Service: Joyful! My cappuccino: Heaven sent!!!! It was truly glorious. I was expecting something decent but the flavors actually burst then melted in my mouth!!!!

Yelp
Came here weekly last year during a lull in my work life and it really comforted me hanging out quietly. I love how family friendly (humans & pups) this coffee shop is and enjoyed the beautiful energy from the people in the community catching up in the mornings. There's music playing in the background but subtle enough it doesn't disrupt you from conversation or reading and variety of seating options indoors as well as outdoors. I always get an iced americano with a pastry on the side. Service is always great, you can tell everyone really enjoys being there.
google avatar

Omar O.

Yelp
Food- great tasting coffee and pastries Service- friendly and honest Ambiance- jazzy, calming, inviting, warm Definitely going to go back and highly recommend. Chil'n status, enjoy your liquid joy inside and outside the shop.
google avatar

Nina Z.

Yelp
the espresso with house almond milk is soooo good !! normally i feel like almond milk is watery and tasteless but this was probably the creamiest almond milk ive ever tried. two kids sells various items in their store and is also located next to a peaceful bookstore that you can checkout during your visit. it gets really busy and they have limited seating so i definitely recommend getting there early if youre trying to snag a seat.
google avatar

Yelp
I really want to love this place. Independently owned. I live right across the street. Great vibes and friendly staff. But they literally move at a snails pace. The inefficiency is just irritating when you just want a decent cup and don't want to go across the street to Starsucks. The coffee itself is ok. I'd like to have more options. Pour overs would be cool but it would probably take an hour to get one.
google avatar

Leslie L.

Yelp
Cute coffee shop hidden in South Pasadena! The cashier and baristas were all SO friendly. Seriously, one of the best customer service experiences I've had in awhile at a local coffee shop. The espresso itself was really good. The flavor was strong but not too strong. It was a good blend of smooth and rich. Not much of a study spot, more of a grab and go. We added the house made vanilla syrup and it was a perfect addition to our lattes. 2 hot vanilla lattes, with house made vanilla syrup Parking is free on the side street, if you're lucky to find a spot. If not, there is a parking lot across the street that is free.

Yelp
I NEED THE OVERNIGHT OATS RECIPE NOWWW. It was legit the perfect size, I genuinely am trying to make out what gives it the hint of sweetness, like it was perfff. Plz someone get back to me. I also got a cappuccino with their house made almond milk and it was perfect. For the matcha lovers I would like to note that they have added sweetener to their matcha ?I believe so heads-up . The barista was nice and informative. It was also very cute. Def need to go back for the oats.

Yelp
I've been running by two kids coffee for some time now and always wanted to check it out. So happy I finally made my way inside this spot this morning. Such a vibe. Music selection is on point. The decor is just as cool. Very simple and intentional. Employees are so welcoming. Very kind and attentive. Coffee and food is great. My new favorite coffee shop in the area for sure. My wife got the chocolate croissant. She loved it. I might've snuck in a bite and yeah, very good. I ordered the overnight oats. Light but very tasty. To drink, i ordered the "coffee soda". So good. My wife ordered the latte. Presentation was great and it was also really flavorful. Would highly recommend to check this place out.
google avatar

Venus M.

Yelp
Best chai latte in the area! It's a modern style coffee spot that is in the heart of South Pasadena. I've been searching smaller coffee shops to avoid crowds, they get busy in the morning but it's peaceful and calm
google avatar

Kimberly T.

Yelp
Love this little shop! Part of me loves coffee shops because of the baristas, and the staff here was great. Cute ambiance, I loved all the decor and items they sell. Coffee was well made, I'd definitely come back again! Only downside was finding parking :(
google avatar

Justin S.

Yelp
I was in the area and I found Two Kids Coffee through Yelp, so I decided to pop in and try this coffee shop. After browsing over the menu, I decided to get a Dirty Chai with their house made almond milk. Let me just say... this has to be one of the BEST DIRTY CHAI'S I EVER TASTED. I was definitely in aw of how good this drink is, the creaminess of the almond milk, the sweetness of the chai, and the taste of espresso. I'm still in aw... I will be back, and I would strongly recommend when in the South Pasadena area to come and support this local coffee shop!
google avatar

Mari K.

Yelp
The food is ok and coffee is alright. I came here with my father and was surprised with the limited menu. The coffee is quite different and pastries are okay. I think the service makes up for the experience I had. The ambiance is quite nice as they have records and good decor all around. I would come back only if I was in the area.
google avatar

Frank R.

Yelp
They were playing People Under the Stairs when I walked in. That's all I needed to know. My favorite spot in South Pas forever.
google avatar

Alicia L.

Yelp
So delicious! I usually feel the same more or less about most coffee shops and cafes but this one really stood out to me! My friend and I ordered a cold brew and an espresso with almond milk and both tasted amazing. I think they use good quality products here and really take care in crafting each drink. Additionally, the service was really great and the space was well designed, not too stark or modern. Can't wait to come back!
google avatar

Eriko M.

Yelp
Stopped by Sunday around noon for coffee. There were plenty of available parking spots on the street. Got a latte. Size was pretty small but it was pretty good. It was nice and creamy. Friendly service. Pretty crowded but fast service.
google avatar

ZS S.

Yelp
I just came in and had a pretty bad experience. I had just taken the train all the way specifically here to hang out for an hour or two, have coffee and maybe a pastry, and do a little work on my laptop. I ordered my coffee and started to sit down at the bar table and the barista (guy with beard/mustache/glasses) looked at me strangely, so I asked (honestly) whether I was allowed to sit there. He said "Yes, you can sit there, but are you about to pull out your laptop?" To which I replied yes, and wondered is that a problem? And he proceeded to tell me "None of us can force me not to use your laptop of course, but it really kills the vibes." Not knowing how to respond to that, I meekly told him I'd try not to use it too much. But as I sat there, I felt like I was under a time limit now and had to put this away as quickly as possible. I wasn't comfortable, to say the least. I should have said something back to him, but at that point he was off helping someone else and I just felt like leaving, so I did. Look, I understand the whole "vibe" thing with not wanting a ton of people working on their laptops in coffee shops. If that is this shop's "thing," then fine, but SAY SO UPFRONT. Don't tell your customer AFTER they have ordered and sat down, and make them feel unwelcome. Such a waste of time. Now I have a paid-for coffee and have to go sit somewhere else after traveling all the way down here. Should have just gone to Starbucks across the street.
google avatar

Layla L.

Yelp
Hmmm something has changed with their lattes. The past 2 times I've been there this week they just weren't good. Maybe new baristas? The flavor has potential but I think it's under extracted.... Anyway everything else is the same, always super friendly service and a cute environment. The pastries are delish too (if there are any left!)
google avatar

Novia E.

Yelp
Finally got to try this because they have early closing hours lol. My meeting was canceled so I decided to use it for a quick coffee run. It was only 4 mins from my house and we ordered iced latte with their house almond milk and regular latte with House vanilla. I'm not an expert coffee drinker because I usually order matcha latte at coffee shop, but this coffee hits different. It's very obvious that they use a high quality coffee. It was too strong for me so I asked for additional vanilla, and they were very nice about it. I would recommend this place if you're an early bird.
google avatar

Roberto H.

Yelp
The coffee and pastry I had were pretty good. The staff was friendly as well. I liked th atmosphere of the place. Wish they had more seating. Although the staff was friendly, the vibe didn't feel as friendly. I would come back but only for take out.
google avatar

Karen M.

Yelp
Great coffee and service, chill vibes and minimal aesthetic. Linked to cool cookbook shop next door so you can sip and browse. Street parking or the public parking lot behind the building.
google avatar

Yushan W.

Yelp
This is definitely one of my favorite coffee spot! I am usually not a almond milk type of person but their almond milk is very tasty and matched perfect with the espresso. I love how the coffee flavor balance well with the milk. Staffs there are also super friendly. I also like how they make the dine in drinks with artisanal mugs.
google avatar

Tiffany C.

Yelp
Overrated. It's giving me echo park vibes in South Pasadena. And the bookstore next door....it would be cool if the worker greeted us with a "hello". Why is customer service lacking at a lot of places??? Do better.

Stephanie S.

Yelp
The coffee was a bit bland but the interior was a great place to hang out for a bit. Will come back to try the other drinks
google avatar

Jeffrey J.

Yelp
Parking: There's a 4 hour free lot if you go north on Mound Ave right above Mission Street. The coffee was good and the baristas were super friendly. We drank at the bar and it felt like we were at a restaurant as they brought us our drinks and refilled our water. The coffee shop has a bunch of coffee paraphernalia on sale and there's a section selling books and other knickknacks. Really cool to sip on some coffee and shop for some goods!

Sandra C.

Yelp
you have to try their house made almond milk. My go to order is always either a hot or iced vanilla almond milk latte --so delicious, consistent, and simple. They never overly sweeten their drinks. The ambience is relaxed, jazzy and comforting. The staff is always so nice, patient, and welcoming Highly recommend this place if you're in Pasadena
google avatar

Lilly N.

Yelp
I'm a very very picky person when it comes to my espressos/lattes, and this place literally blows me out of the water! Their coffee is SOOOO dang good, definitely my new top go-to spot for lattes. They have non-dairy options for my fellow almond milk/lactose intolerant peeps and their house made almond milk never disappoints. The inside is SUPER cute and reminds me of an art gallery. The coffee place itself is connected to an arts store as well, they have the cutest mugs and handmade items! Parking is super easy in the lot behind the strip mall, lot across the street near Starbucks, or along the streets.

Cal S.

Yelp
Coffee is pretty good (with a creative menu) and the space is nice. The only (but somewhat big) thing is the food safety and handling. I asked for a straw because the liquid leaks from the lids they use when sipping from them. The guy calling out orders touched the end of the straw with his bare hands and proceeded to give it to me. I have spent enough time in the service industry to know how unsanitary it is and the contamination risks associated with this to throw the straw out. I just took off the lid and sipped from the cup lol. A simple suggestion I have is to place straws (in their original wrappers) out where customers can have easy access to them. It would be nice to change out the lids (and cups?) too. Plenty of cafes nearby use the same cups and lids which do not have the problem of leakage when drinking from the lid.

Shalini H.

Yelp
They are absolutely great. Love the people and the food is delicious!! They are so mindful and have a great sense of remembering peoples names and greet you with the best smile. One of our favorite places in Pasadena!!
google avatar

Jodi W.

Yelp
I love this place. Simple. Elegant. Gorgeous coffee. Delicious pastries. Super small selection. Just a few seats. No fuss. Just clean, quiet and friendly. All the things I like.
google avatar

Lo W.

Yelp
Delicious chocolate chip cookies, high-quality coffee, welcoming vibe. Would definitely return.

Yelp
Two Kids is my favorite coffee shop in South Pas. That's saying something because there are two other shops very close by that I also hold in high regard. What makes Two Kids so special is the atmosphere. It's family-owned, family-operated, and everything about it feels friendly and welcoming. This must be a common sentiment because every time I go, I see a lot of familiar faces and frequently run into friends and neighbors. What else... - The space is extremely cute. It has a unique gallery-style vibe that adds an unpretentious hipness to the atmosphere. - Parking couldn't be any easier. Street parking is as easy as it comes and there's a large, free city lot just around the corner. - The coffee is fantastic and their baristas are skilled at their craft. Even if you have to grab and go and don't get to hang out, the coffee alone is worth it. - The pastries are fantastic. They source from two local bakeries. Both are so good, I can't decide which I like better. In short, Two Kids is a top notch coffee shop and a perfect fit in South Pas. Stop by some time. Maybe I'll see you there.

Yelp
I got a cold brew with almond milk. For an additional $1.50 it should have more than a splash. Coffee was still pretty dark so I was suspicious. But since you can't go in I didn't ask for more milk. Strong coffee but not much flavor in terms of the roast. Pretty mild. My husband got a hot coffee. It was so bad he took two sips to be sure and declared it undrinkable. He said there's never been a hot coffee anywhere he has deemed undrinkable but that was it. I smelled it and it was a combination of a burnt and strangely sour smell. I saw oolong tea in loose leaf form listed so I thought I'd buy some. They should indicate how little they give you. It was $18 for the quantity I would brew in an Asian tea pot. A pathetic quantity for that price.
