After reading the reviews about the homemade tortillas, tamales and carnitas, I drove 30 minutes to the Tortilla Factory for the flour tortillas.
Imagine my surprise when I was told they stopped making tortillas in house sone time ago despite their website making a big deal about the tortillas. I was directed to the refrigerator where a few cold, hard lumps of very small machine made tortillas were sitting on the bottom shelf. I would take Mission tortillas from the grocery store any day over these poor excuses they tried to pawn off on me.
After the long drive, I settled for some carnitas and chicken tamales. The next day I unwrapped the carnitas to find about 4-5 tablespoons of congealed fat on the outside of the foil; not very appetizing. Once heated, the carnitas were about a 4-5 on the 10 pt scale but the way they were packed to go definitely left a negative impression. The tamales shocked me; they were the smallest ones I have ever seen, about the length and diameter of a frankfurter. I just threw them away since the filling was so little as to be inconsequential.
So, after much anticipation, I add the Tyler Tortilla Factory to my growing list of Mexican food disappointments in Tyler.
