Where To Find To-Go Coffee While Coronavirus Limits Cafes - Eater DC

"The locally-owned coffee shop in Columbia Heights is taking daily carryout orders (8 a.m. to 3 p.m.) for its full liquid lineup, including Costa Rican drip, a honey lavender latte, and nitro on tap." - Tierney Plumb

Love the options and service and space. All very nice. I ordered a black matcha from Kenya. Essentially just a powdered black tea with oat milk. The one thing I hated was how TERRIBLE THE WIFI is. Like glitching ever 10 minutes....just bad. Everything else was cool. Probably won't come back since I can't work effectively and their hours are so limited.

Google
We stopped in for breakfast before shopping and how scrumptious! My husband ordered the smokehouse sandwich and WOW. The jalapeño cheddar bread was incredible. The whole sandwich was stellar. I ordered the classic egg and cheese sandwich which stood up to its name- nothing special but good. However the pistachio cardamom latte I had was SPECTACULAR. The flavor profile was amazing. Service was great and decently quick! Will absolutely be back.

Google
Good Farmhouse sandwich. Decent Lox bagel. Ambiance is nice inside though it is a bit warm in the interior, which makes it a little uncomfortable. Good place overall.

When I move into a neighborhood, I really try to become a part of the community. My favorite thing to do is find coffee shops to try out and meet the staff. Before I moved to Columbia Heights, I visited a bunch of coffee shops. Tynan is by far my favorite coffee shop in DC (and honestly, ever!), and holds an incredibly special place in my heart because it was the first place I dined indoors and sat in to work after being fully vaccinated. The staff are incredibly friendly (shoutout to John, Leti, and Maria!), their food is great (especially their power bagel, love bullfrog bagels and the BMT and grown up grilled cheese), and I love their homemade syrups for lattes. The staff are so personal, I brought my parents to the coffee shop and introduced them to the owner. Its a lovely place, lovely vibe, favorite coffee, and super convenient since its right next to the west entrance of the Columbia Heights metro. Its my go-to local coffee shop, and I can't praise it or recommend it enough!

Google
They have a convenient location right by the Columbia Heights metro, making it an excellent choice for grabbing a drink or snack while on the go. The atmosphere is inviting, complemented by the friendly staff who contribute to a welcoming vibe. The menu includes a nice variety of sandwiches, which adds to the overall appeal. However, the coffee could benefit from a bit more depth in flavor, as it felt somewhat average during my visit. If you're looking for a comfortable place to enjoy a basic coffee, Tynan is a solid option. For those in search of a more exceptional coffee experience, there may be other alternatives worth exploring. Overall, it’s a pleasant spot with potential for improvement in its coffee offerings.

My first time here. Having my dog groomed at PetCo directly across the street. These folks are throwin’ down up in here! Good coffee, great food, and friendly service! A great place to hunker down for a few hours.

Haim Haviv

Google
Laptop-friendly neighborhood cafe. However, the bagel my breakfast sandwich was served on was dry and internet is limited so you need a code every hour. Otherwise friendly staff and a spacious place.

Google
Went in today to get a dulcelatte and got way too much milk. I asked the barista in a Spanish guy in a DG hate it I could get less milk or more coffee. He promptly ignored me. Then after back and forth and unnecessary attitude he agreed to make it again and just gave me a drop of milk and barely filled up the 16oz cup. He has the most disgusting attitude and should not be working in customer service. Usually the black guy who makes it stirs in the syrup at the bottom and doesn’t add as much milk AND HAS A BETTER ATTITUDE!!

Yelp
The pistachio cardamom latte and the macchiato are a must try at this place! It's usually crowded but the service is prompt. I highly recommend this coffee place!

Yelp
Located near a variety of shops in Columbia Heights, Tynan is definitely in a convenient location. The inside was warm and inviting with some fun art. Coffee came out pretty quickly and baristas were kind. Tried the iced vanilla latte. The initial taste is great but it had a bit of a bitter aftertaste. The lavender and honey notes were great though. I would definitely come back and try this again next shopping day!

Yelp
Good quick service - order at counter and food brought to you. Got an egg bacon cheese sandwich on a waffle which was yummy! (visited 10/2022)

Yelp
My goal would be to try as many coffee places as I can in DC, so thanks to Yelp, I found this place not too far from me and my neighbor. I recall coming here during the weekday to catch up with a friend and will be coming back for their sandwiches. I opted for an iced coffee at the time and failed to take a picture. At any rate, the Catch Me if you Can sandwich was so delicious that is probably why the coffee pic took a backseat. This is in Columbia Heights very close to my place in Admo and I drove there and did street parking as it was easy to find in the morning. When we came around 8:30am, it was not too busy, but by the time we got there and ordered a line was forming out the door. Overall, a great coffee spot with an enormous amount of choices for food. I enjoyed the soft egg, bacon and increadible brioche bun. I may go back and try their bagels next time as there seemed to be a good amount of choices:)
google avatar

Caleb T.

Yelp
It's always quiet which makes it a good workspace and a nice escape from the craziness of Columbia Heights. Coffee is delicious (my go to is the almond milk latte) and the baristas are friendly.
google avatar

Stephanie C.

Yelp
It's a small shop, the pastries are decent and the service was fast. I really liked their apple turnover. Their croissants were ok, could have been flakier and the almond croissant could use some more filling.
google avatar

Rachel P.

Yelp
I absolutely love Tynan! No wifi here but their coffee is top tier and the location next to Columbia heights metro station makes it an easy go to for a drink or a quick lunch. I love their oatmilk lattes and their pour over offerings. I come here regularly and the staff is always so kind.
google avatar

Sam D.

Yelp
The service here is just awful. The staff are so rude, condescending, and negative. I wouldn't suggest anyone bother coming here. Basic human decency and respect should be standard, not the exception.
google avatar

Erica S.

Yelp
If you're hopping off of the metro at Columbia Heights this is a great place to grab a quick coffee. I stopped by on a Tuesday afternoon and got an iced honey lavender latte which was delicious! There appears to be a good amount of table and booth style seating if you want to eat in or work from the cafe. The service was prompt and the staff was friendly- easily accommodating my request for a half sweet latte.
google avatar

Julie R.

Yelp
Made a quick stop here before I got on the metro to head for the airport (convenient to the Columbia heights metro station). I ordered a cold brew with a shot of vanilla and the 'catch me crofing' sandwich. The cold brew was outstanding! Some of the smoothest, creamiest brew I've had- 10/10! The sandwich wasn't anything special and I kind of wish I would have ordered a different one. They have a huge selection and my friend ordered the power bagel which looked much better. Overall a cute little coffee shop with plenty of options. Do not sleep on the cold brew!

Yelp
A great neighborhood cafe! I have been here several times to do work, get coffee and pastries and have always enjoyed the good service, excellent drinks, bagels, and sweets, at relatively reasonable prices.
google avatar

Hlugie K.

Yelp
Easily my favorite coffee spot in the area. The Turkey at the club lunch sandwich is my favorite so far
google avatar

Ailun H.

Yelp
I was eyeing their pour overs, but sadly the barista said they weren't making any of them currently. I got the 12 oz honey lavender latte (with oat milk which is an extra 50 cents). After tax it was almost $6, which is more expensive than usual, but nothing I haven't seen. The latte isn't really sweet which is more of my speed. Sadly, it just tasted like an oat milk latte with a slight hint of lavender and honey. I would prefer a stronger lavender flavor as this drink was pretty subtle. There's a nice oat milk after taste but overall, can barely tell that this drink has any coffee in it. Probably won't get the lattes here again since it's pretty pricy but happy to try a pour over when they're making it again!

Yelp
Are used to live right across the street and Tynan was on my way to my bus stop so I used to stop in a couple of times a week. It's a decent coffee shop. They have lots of different options of drinks and snacks. I haven't gotten any of their food, but I recently switched from cold brew to try one of their specialty teas. I tried the "Tea Breeze" (Scratch-Made Sparkling Green Tea & Scratch-Made Raspberry Syrup) which was really refreshing on a hot day. My friend got one of their smoothies, the Wildberry (Strawberries, Blueberries, Raspberries & Blackberries with Green Tea & Pure Cane Simple Syrup) and it also tasted very fresh. Like they use actual fruit instead of fruit flavorings. They have a couple of seats outside but lots of seating inside and they even have a printer that you can pay to use in case you don't have one near you and it's cheaper than most other places to get basic printing done. Definitely recommend for a quick stop or to hang out and work!

Johanna G.

Yelp
This is my favorite cafe. Not only is their cold brew one of the best in town, but their sandwiches and quiches are quiet delicious as well. During the week they aren't that busy, but tend to be very busy on the weekend. I would suggest you come with patience as you may have to wait a little, especially if you order food. But as the saying goes, "All good things come to those who wait... "

Genesis G.

Yelp
10/10 coffee shop. I had a horrible day and came in for a vanilla latte and breakfast to cheery myself up. The latte was so good I almost started crying.. again. Best coffee shop in the neighborhood

Yelp
Delicious coffee and breakfast bagels! I had the veggie bagel with avocado, hummus, sprouts & tomato on multigrain bagel. Delicious!

Yelp
Strong wifi and excellent masala chai. 10/10 recommend as a study spot in Columbia heights

Nadya M.

Yelp
One of my fave coffee spots in the city. They have a killer masa chai, great food, sweetest staff & owner. Overall the place has great ambiance and excellent service!

Yelp
I usually don't give out ratings, but when I saw this place only had 3.5 stars I had to leave a review because that was not my experience at all. Ordered a bacon, egg and cheese sandwich on an everything bagel that was the perfect size (not too big but not too small). Bagel was crispy yet soft, bacon was good, and the sandwich wasn't greasy. Also ordered a delicious, foamy hot chocolate that was filled to the brim. When we asked for water they gave us two cups filled to the brim as well! Friendly staff, cool and spacious interior, and right next to the Columbia Heights metro stop (Mount Pleasant side). Also served one of the best breakfast sandwiches and hot chocolates I've ever had. I usually don't go that far into DC but if you ever find yourself in this area for breakfast I'd highly recommend Tynan!

Yelp
This Place is right in the center of Columbia heights DC. One of the best coffee places I have been to. Amazing collection of coffee, tea and other sandwiches. When I crave a simple breakfast with varieties of coffee to select from, I come here. The service is outstanding. The people are so friendly and welcoming. Coffee lovers, try this place.

Yelp
Came here for a hot chocolate on a rainy day around 8:30AM, sat here for almost an hour. Line with about 5 people before me was present when I arrived, moved quite slowly. Got a hot chocolate with whole milk (don't have skim milk) for having it in-store, came out quickly in a mug. Too sweet, not great, tasted like powder. Was pretty pricey at almost $5 post-tax too.
google avatar

Chris L.

Yelp
I stopped by this coffee shop again when I was back up around Colombia Heights. I still remember the Dominican hot chocolate I had the first time I lucked up on it so the craving cane back for one when I found myself in that area again. The coffee shop is only a few steps from the station escalators. It's a good size business for DC. Free wi-fi if you buy something, original art of the walls and not too noisy. Good place to take a break from shopping or relax before starting your day. Seems like a good place to study and get some work done too.

Yelp
Prior to the arrival of COVID, I visited this coffee shop every Sunday morning as I passed through the neighborhood. While I haven't been back in some time, it was really nice to return for a brief meeting with colleagues. The basics haven't changed--the menu is still good, the staff are still friendly, and the vibe is still open and welcoming. I did try two new things this past visit though, and I'm glad that I did. The Beet Root Latte and the Purely Elizabeth's Oatmeal were both winners in my book. The former was tasty and a beautiful pink, and the latter was filling and on the healthier end of the spectrum. While WiFi is present, access is protected with unique passwords that are generated for each customer. Given how the line can be on the slower side at times, make sure to ask for a password when you order your food and/or beverage in order to avoid having to get in line again. Conveniently located just above the Columbia Heights Metro sop on the Green/Yellow lines. American Express is accepted here.

Yelp
LET'S FACE IT. It took decades to bring good NY-quality bagel (and pizza) to DC. Now there's Pupatella, Lupo and Andy's for pizza. And Bullfrog Bagels that are the featured bagels at Tynan (there is also Bethesda Bagels said by some to be the best, and also Call Your Mother.) And Tynan's bagels are GREAT. BUT, Having taken years to get these bagels, will it take years to add the good old traditional NY-type cream cheese Schmear? The amount of cream cheese Tynan dispenses on their bagels is quite SKIMPY. It's being very TIGHT or cheap, not as though they wanted to encourage repeat customers. But I guess since there are few real competitors, and since DC's population is so transient and lacking in discriminating taste, it doesn't bother Tynan. It's as though any good or generous amount of cream cheese are taken out of employees' pockets. Or employees (or their boss) are so naturally TIGHT FISTED, it seems to boggle their minds to be generous. BUT all in all, THE COFFEE IS GREAT. Sandwiches are okay, but the waffles are of extremely POOR quality though they are impressive in the looks department, appearing grand in quantity, amazing with fruit on top, etc. BUT looks and glitz do not translate to good quality food. And DC with its mediocre restaurants is living proof of that...
google avatar

Rick S.

Yelp
I was relieved to see Tynan spared the fate of neighboring stores when Wawa moved in. They have good, local bagels (Bullfrog), a nice vibe and a decent mix of teas. Teas (like Darjeeling, Earl Gray, English breakfast) on display are loose-leaf and they provide a fairly large amount (with timers too!). Bagels are toasted and although they're a bit messy when smashed together with cream cheese, there's enough to make me happy. But the reason I come here is for their chicken sandwiches - warm jalepeno-cheese bread, diced red onions, filling amounts of chicken, cranberries, almonds. It may be a bit pricey, but this is understandable for the location and quality ingredients. Nice murals and people-watching too!
google avatar

Yelp
I got a ginger turmeric latte because I wanted to spend the most money possible and get a drink that would ostensibly taste the worst. It's hard work being a health bitch but it feels right most of the time. I was pleasantly surprised, the latte was delicious. I continued my health bitch ways by getting a power bagel (avocado, sprouts, tomato, hummus). I chose Poppy and then realized that Poppy is a beautiful name for a child. This was the only revelation about my future I had at Tynan, but sometimes it's good to live in the present. One thing that stood out to me was that when they are finished making your drink they yell out the name of the drink with the vigor and cadence of an old-times railroad conductor. I ate with three friends, each of whom enjoyed their meals. The ambience was gentle yet stimulating. There was a printer for use, making this an excellent workspace. Additionally, there were ample vegetarian, vegan, and gluten free options. Thanks for a good time, Tynan!

Minneh S.

Yelp
Large open space with a printer inside. It's a good place to work (if the wifi is working) with alright coffee. I mostly went here for the convenience, but the coffee is overpriced for what it is. The baristas are nice, though. It can get really busy with limited seating on Friday and weekend mornings.
google avatar

Meghan P.

Yelp
I've only had the BMT sandwich which is good. It's a vegetarian, nut free pesto sandwich on ciabatta bread. I've only had it twice and it taste the same every time. Nevertheless it's super good. The scenery is really nice here. I haven't really experienced much here. Only th

Nicole H.

Yelp
Appreciate their comprehensive menu, especially the iced teas. Cold brew has the right amount of strength to it and an adequate amount of milk is added. However, a "recommended service" line was added to my receipt, making the price a lot higher than the $5 plus tax I was expecting to pay. They should disclose that they are adding a service fee to orders clearly.
google avatar

Amanda M.

Yelp
I can't believe I haven't reviewed Tynan. It is a staple for me. Their coffee and tea are great, but people sleep on their AMAZING sandwiches. Seriously. The Turkey at the Club is one of my favorite sandwiches in the city. The Farmhouse and another Clucker are close seconds. If you're a latte fan like me, they have a honey lavender latte seasonally that is just delicious. And then you have the fact that everyone who works there is incredibly nice. This place is great. Stop by sometime.
google avatar

Clara E.

Yelp
I've been in a few times for coffee/study session. I stopped in around 4:00PM. The coffee here is always great thanks to Jorge. My visit tonight was very blah thanks to the young man at the front playing his trap musik! l approached the counter and asked if he could play something else besides trap musik maybe coffee house or something suitable for all ears he stated "Nah we don't control the music" as an African American woman I don't want to hear the N* word my entire stay. I am highly upset beings though this was my new go to spot! I will NOT be returning, 3 stars for Jorge ; Thank you again for your great service and coffee!
google avatar

Jessica L.

Yelp
OK definitely describes Tynan. I've been in a few times and always leave feeling a bit underwhelmed. The coffee is decent, but the service is slow. The last time I went I got a breakfast sandwich - chicken sausage, egg, and cheese on a bagel. While the sandwich was delicious, that plus an iced tea was like $11. Just not sure this place is worth that.
google avatar

Toni Rose D.

Yelp
I didn't even know this existed until a colleague suggest we meet here to discuss our plans for next week. It's got a cool vibe, and I love the paintings on the wall for sale. They call their hot chocolate, "drinking chocolate" which I thought was interesting. They have bagels from Bullfrog Bagels, which I'm also a big fan of. This place does regulate their free wifi, meaning that you need to purchase something for 2 hours of wifi. You'll get the username and password after you order something. And it won't work until you actually get your order, or at least for me, the login details were denied until I got my drinking chocolate. It's odd, but I guess I get it. Just a heads up for the newbies out there. I liked it enough to go back, I'm sure. It makes for a good studying space, that's not Starbucks.

Aleksandra G.

Yelp
Always great service at Tynan. Everyone is very friendly and smiling. I love their almond honey bar. I want to eat it every time. It is so addictive. The place is clean and filled with plants. It also has some outside seating which is great.

Veronica B.

Yelp
This was such a great find on our recent trip to DC. The iced coffee is absolutely delicious, the breakfast sandwiches were yummy, and the staff were so kind and welcoming. Loved that you can sub a gluten-free bagel for any bread. We ended up coming back every morning of our trip because it was so great.
google avatar

Jennifer W.

Yelp
I love this place. They even have a printer for use and it's pretty cheap to print. They have water that they oh don't have to ask for. Free WiFi. Good condiments, including sriracha. Turmeric powder as an add in (self serve, right on the counter next to the cinnamon and sugar!). Bullfrog bagels, too! They got all of the details right. Whenever I get the chance I avoid the big chains and come straight here. Starbucks doesn't have a printer. Pret doesn't have a printer. Peet's doesn't have a printer. What can I say? They won me over with the printer. And the turmeric. Coffee-wise: delicious espresso. It's all I drink so I cannot advise on other items.
google avatar

Layla L.

Yelp
Their lattes are pretty good. Not by any means comparable to baked and wired but on par with say, northside social which uses counter culture. But I've found that the coffee brand is equally as important as the person and machine making it. it's a nice atmosphere to study
google avatar

Nihar T.

Yelp
Ordered normal latte, beetroot latte, and dirty chai latte. They were all ok, beetroot was very bitter and hard to drink, so would not recommend that if you don't like beetroot. The barista was really nice and gave me a free grande dirty chai latte since I didn't like the beetroot one at all and I had gone with her recommendation. Dirty chai latte tasted fresh with spices as it was housemade - would recommend that and the fact that they had great customer service!

Yelp
Tynan is a typical local coffee shop with a strong customer base. I can see why people wouldn't like it since it's not like your hipster feel coffee shop but that's not why it's around. So many people come here to use their wifi, so much so that they now have a wifi policy. But for a location right next to the metro, in a busy area like Columbia Heights, I'd say they do pretty well. They have breakfast and lunch items, pastries, and different coffees and teas to choose from. I'm a fan of their adult grilled cheese (so maybe they are kind of hipster? Haha) AND their nitro cold brew. Sooo this place may be mediocre but they are serving people well in the area. Any haters can walk over to Panera across the street or Starbucks. Or even another block over to Coffey Cafe, they are good too!

Vasant J.

Yelp
I stop by here every so often for a bagel sandwich and a latte and I always leave satisfied. They have a great menu with a variety of sandwich options and pastries. Their bagels and coffee taste great and are high quality, and their pricing is comparable to a typical DC coffee shop. The staff is friendly and the atmosphere of the cafe is warm and welcoming. Definitely worth a visit if you're in the area!
google avatar

Gabriel N.

Yelp
Great local coffee shop! Plus atmosphere, music, and plenty of seating. Bagel sandwich demonstrated superior construction (crucial) - cheese was utilized prevent slippage, and bagel was as good as you'll find out of the northeast! Cortado was served in unique glassware I had never seen, which I appreciated and really emphasized the nose in the drink.
google avatar

Julia W.

Yelp
i adore this place; it's pricey but always great quality, and it's worth it to support a local gem in a cluster of chains. staff are so sweet, too
google avatar

Chandani C.

Yelp
I'm a sucker for sandwiches with sprouts in them so when I saw a picture of their turkey avocado sandwich, I knew I had to have it - and today I did! It was so delicious. I would go back just to have another. I didn't really try much else this time, but their menu looked pretty good and they have an all day breakfast menu too. Service was phenomenal! There was one guy working the register and another who was preparing/bringing out the food. They were both so extremely kind and my sandwich was ready so quickly! They have tons of seating and outlets. They have WiFi too, but you have to make a purchase to get the password. The WiFi password lasts for 12 hours so it's a good spot to get some work done!

Kathleen G.

Yelp
I love Tynan!! It is the perfect coffee shop for a quick coffee on the way to work, or to change up the work from home routine and it's got great breakfast and lunch food if you stay there all day! Every time anyone visits me in DC I take them here because it is one of my favorites!! 10/10 recommend!

Darryl P.

Yelp
This has been my favorite coffee shop for about 10 years now. I stopped by on Friday, September 3, 2021 because I had the day off and haven't been here in more than a year. I came before the 3 PM closing time but it was closed. Disappointed but I do hope everything's okay.

Yelp
Hipster coffee place in Columbia Heights that has a nice environment. High ceilings, good lighting, and plenty of chairs and couches which were comfortable. I ordered the wild berry smoothie which had strawberries, blueberries, and a few other berries along with organic green tea. I can't tell the difference between organic green tea and non-organic green tea, but I suppose it's just one of those key words hipster places need to use. The smoothie was in a 16 oz glass and was very good. Not too sweet which was great. The employees had very poor body language. Their expression seemed to say the following: "My life sucks, I hate working here, there is no hope." I get it, you may not be happy with your life, but I don't need that negativity. Whatever you got going on, leave it at home and smile at customers, even though it may be tough some days.
google avatar

Bansuri P.

Yelp
Worst coffee ever. I ordered a mocha latte and it tasted like spoiled milk with dirty laundry water. Also, there is only one hour of free internet, so not an ideal place for studying. Overall, sad I wasted $4.50 on such bad coffee.
google avatar

Joe A.

Yelp
Decent place - awful WiFi. The WiFi is very poor, and goes in and out. It's one of the things I expect in a coffee shop, and they do provide it to their customers - but they provide it very poorly. I hope they resolve this, but until then I'll be going to other coffee shops in the area or the Starbucks across the street. Management: please resolve this - it costs you roughly the same to have good and bad internet, and it is 2018 :/ (or tell us you don't have it - that's fine if you like, but poor performance is very frustrating)
