North Park’s Newest Brewery Restaurant Is On the Way | Eater San Diego

"Owned by North Park resident Steve Billings, U-31 is a long-running neighborhood sports bar/club that will undergo a significant revamp to its look and direction: it will retain dancing but add live acoustic music programming in the early evenings, receive a remodel, and launch a brand-new food menu." - Candice Woo

Google
Huge shoutout to James behind the bar. He’s the kind of bartender every spot wishes they had. Fast, friendly, and knows how to pour a drink with precision and personality. If you’re lucky enough to catch him, ask for his take on the Classic Margarita—it’s a smooth blend with the perfect Tajín rim. The DJ lineup was solid—mixing everything from throwbacks to reggaeton to club bangers. The crowd? Chill, stylish, and here to dance. The lighting and visuals gave it a real underground-meets-lounge aesthetic. Drinks menu is creative without trying too hard—favorites were the Strawberry Mule and Prickly Pear Mule. Prices are fair, service is quick, and the bartenders actually seem to enjoy being there (rare in the nightlife scene). If you’re in San Diego and don’t pull up to U31 at least once, you’re missing out. North Park nightlife wouldn’t be the same without it. Pro tip: Get there before 10:30 to avoid the line, and if James is working, tell him Danny sent you. (All staff members are friendly and professional).

The DJ is amazing and the crowd was great! Would have appreciated some snacks ,that could have been a crowd puller!!!

I visited here on a Sunday morning to watch football because I was told it was a New York Giants sport bar. Unfortunately this is no longer the case; but….however this place has some great chicken and waffles. With a few different variations which I found interesting. One thing to note is that when I went there, it seemed to only be two people working outside of the cook(s). A bartender, and the poor guy serving the food. Will definitely return to try the other chicken and waffles variations but wish it was still a NYG bar.

Google
Corrine the bartender was so nice and friendly! Bryan that works the Chicken and Waffles was also friendly! The food is amazing! We feasted while watching post season baseball. I can’t wait to go back!

Trivia Fill-In Host: Very Hairy! Asks Questions! Wish he dressed like Cluemaster, Puzzler, or the other one.. green outfit, but understated thats a personal problem I need to own. Got last place (Parents had to leave early for date night.)

Google
Fun light style club with super hip/pop music. Few bar tables but omg the dj playing tonight was mixing allll the songs together it was so fun!

Google
This venue is awesome if you like hood music and dancing. Great times even hanging out on the back patio and playing games and hanging out. There’s a lot to offer from this venue.

Google
Came in on a Tuesday and to my surprise they were having a beer pong contest, it wasn't too crowded but Friday through Saturday the place gets really packed. $5 entrance if I'm not mistaken over the weekend, great variety of craft beer and whiskey 10/10 would recommend if you don't want to go to downtown and have a chill night.

Yelp
Came to U31 for the chicken and waffles and they were seriously delicious. Crispy, flavorful, and exactly what I was craving. The bartender Maddy made the morning even better with her amazing energy and killer strawberry margaritas. Great food, great drinks, great service!

Yelp
I attended the free Sunset Standup comedy show for the first time on Friday, which happens every Friday at 7:30 PM. The event drew a full crowd, featuring six or seven comedians, and it was an incredibly fun and entertaining experience. The setup includes heaters, table seating, and benches, but I recommend arriving a bit early since some people ended up standing due to the large turnout. The show runs for about an hour to an hour and a half. Beforehand, you can grab a drink at the bar, which offers an excellent selection of craft beers, and enjoy some of the games inside.

Yelp
They weren't open at 11 on Sunday, despite their listing. A group was waiting outside when we arrived. They had a reservation , but the door was locked and there was no response. They lost 5 customers. I was interested in Mama's Fried Chicken, but doubt I'll try again. I don't understand not posting hours on the door--even if you have to put up a temporary sign.

Yelp
DJ is garbage!!! Heard the same 3 songs in the past 2 hours! Was told they take requests, but when requested, just simply got a head nod and never played the song.

Yelp
So So So Yum couldn't go in cause we're not 21 but the vibes are off the chart and the food is DELICIOUS. Amazing hospitality and serving. HIT THEM UP

Yelp

Yelp
The rating depends on who you get... 5 starts if you get the short haired hottie. Zero, if you get the blonde/hair a little past the shoulder ma'am. She tried to over charge us. You do NOT charge ppl for top self-UNLESS THEY ASK! She tried to say it was on us for not asking for well. Yea, that's not how that works. I also just found out that the wonderful woman that I'm speaking about is filling in and isn't actually the normal bartender here. Looks like maybe she should be because she's the only honest one around here.

Yelp
Don't come here for NFL Sunday ticket. They advertise happy hour 9am-9pm every Sunday. Currently here and the signs are in the bar but they are not honoring it. Poor management.

Reese D.

Yelp
Watched a Padre game here because wanted to try the food. It's a pretty gross place (women's bathroom looked like it hadn't been cleaned for a week) but the place has a lots of TV's. The problem was, they had the sound so loud you couldn't even talk to your own group at the table or at the bar to order drinks either. I won't ever go back!

Yelp
This is a pandemic review please make a note. Their back patio is absolutely lovely, warm and snuggly on a chilly night. I like what they did to insure social distancing, there is also hand sanitizer and employees who are masked up. Even Sunset Trivia is obeying the County rules for health safety. Drinks are not astronomical, they have a TON of TV's with sports ball on and they have really decent bar food. I shared my husband's veggie burger and his beer batter fries which were absolutely delicious. Lot's of fun and nice people here just coming to the bar to chill out and forget about the pandemic for a while. Bartender was super professional and kind, asked me if I was driving when I ordered my second drink. I am a former bartender from many years ago, I remember being concerned about over serving my customers as well. I really appreciate someone cares enough to ask that question. I recommend this place for those of you locals who are also Trivia players, great atmosphere and great staff. I may have to walk up to watch some college football games here, it's really hard getting any of the other bars to put on the Aztecs which is a local San Diego College team or any other college sports for that matter. Now NCAA Men's Basketball is starting up! They have a 4.00 burger special on Saturday's too so you've been warned! :D

Yelp

Yelp
U-31 never disappoints when you're looking for a good place to go dancing for girls night. I don't usually go out unless family and friends are in town but when I do, I take them out for good old school music at U-31. I recently took my girls (5 of us) out to U-31 on 2/18/22 for a birthday party and the ladies had a blast! There wasn't a cover when we arrived around 10:30pm. The bartender was attentive even when it got super busy. The music was good, could've been a little better but overall he played 80s, 90s and 2000s old school hip hop, r&b, and pop. It was nice to feel normal going dancing with friends without having to wear a mask. Thanks for a great time!

Gina L.

Yelp
1st and last time here! Don't waist your time. Corrine B. behind the bar has the worst attitude (which is putting it mildly). She only paid attention to the 3 guys at the end of the bar and had no interest in helping anyone else. Whom ever owns this place, good luck!

Viry M.

Yelp
Came with a friend and had wings and drinks, flavor for the honey Sriracha sauce was really good!!!! Drinks are a good price too

Markenya C.

Yelp
A fun and friendly dive bar with good food and drinks! Great customer service and fun Friday hip hop and old school night vibe!

Ethan K.

Yelp
Came in the early evening with a friend for some drinks and chicken from Mom's Chicken and Waffles located in U31. The chicken was amazing with big portions and the service was friendly and on point. The bartender Cassidy was really friendly and was doing her thing - somehow made Hennessy mixed with Tequila taste good. Great food great drinks great experience.

Yelp
My friends and I have been regulars here for the past two years. We first heard about this place for its amazing taco tuesday deal - $2 tacos and $3 draft beers (which include great craft beers and IPAs such as sculpin, alpine duet, etc.). They used to have karaoke on Tues nights as well but now they have a beer pong tournament starting around 9pm (which is when the taco tuesday deal ends). The service is prompt and Sam is the man - he's the guy on Tuesdays and will hook you up. The tacos are solid - the best is the fish and veggie. They put a lot of guac on the veggie taco mmm. Another great night is wing Wednesday's which are 50 cent wings. Cool spot, cool people and great deals!

Yelp
Was walking by and bartender Shane called us in and he was amazing. We felt so welcome and stayed so long we gone t to meet security angel and jimmy ! Everyone is so nice and accommodating I will definitely be back

Yelp
We were here for a fundraiser which is great for the community!!! Mark the bartender was AMAZING!!!! It was super busy and he handled business. Had a great time for a great cause: security was amazing too. Definitely gonna be back, good environment and great service.

Ross G.

Yelp
Go see the bartenders Tadas and Kassandra they are the best! Drinks are great along with the service and personality's!

Yelp
This place has the potential to be so good. Service is good. Nice space. The DJ is hit or miss depending on the night. Wish the music was consistently good but it's a toss up good/bad when you go. However, the biggest downside to me is the speakers sound like they are blown out. They need to be replaced ASAP.
google avatar

Crystina V.

Yelp
I was new to San Diego last week and was looking for a great time out and came across this place. The drinks are okay and security's up front are actually nice but the environment was terrible. Dj is the worst. Saturday night and you're playing Taylor swift and Katy perry at 11pm? I get if you have to close by 2 and your trying to make the mood go down for people to leave but at 11?! Anyways, music was bad and I think that's about it. If the Dj can't seem to find the difference of clubbing and Prom night, I takes a big toll on the rating even tho staff, drinks, and location are great.

Cassandra S.

Yelp
James is an absolute gem! He has such a positive attitude. He's happy to help and very attentive.
google avatar

Kelli D.

Yelp
We stumbled across this place during a night out for a friend's bachelorette party. The staff was really friendly and made our experience a fun one! The DJ generously played song requests we had for the bride as well as every hit you would want to hear while dancing on a night out!
google avatar

Yelp
Enjoyed myself here at this bar while I was in San Diego! The whole trip was based on a friends birthday so we did things she wanted to do! This particular nightclub was featuring a reggae artist she follows so we went to see him live and what a show! The band was awesome! I have a *thing* for musicians (wink wink haha!) Great show, decent drinks, can't remember what I ordered, something like a cactus habanero strawberry something with tequila! Didn't even snap a pic! Sorry
google avatar

Maria B.

Yelp
Venue was great for the event I attended.... my main complaint is the next morning as I looked at my receipts, I noticed I was charged for ice. A drink on the rocks... $2 ... my other drink was not and it had ice. Really confusing to me. A bag of ice costs $2. I posted on social media to see if This was a thing... and it certainly is not! Please let me know if you charge for ice. Or include it in the price

Yelp
Stopped by for Burger Week and was not disappointed. Walking inside the stage for musicians is directly to the left, the bar is along the right wall and the pool tables are in the far back. They have a few u-shaped seating booths along the far left wall. Flat screen televisions are abundant. We ordered at the bar, went to a booth to wait, then discovered if you stand by the open window and lean out a bit, the sunset is very beautiful. Excellent timing! My burger (Smokey Mountain Blue) was juicy and cooked medium, just the way I like. It came with barbecue sauce, blue cheese, lettuce, bacon and onions. The fries a bit dry, dipping them in ranch dressing helped. The draft pale ale beer paired nicely with the burger. Overall a nice experience, I'd come here again for the burger.

Yelp
Deserves a 0 star honestly. Went there to watch the Dodgers NLCS game 6, do or die game. Anyway was approached by I think was Alexa (girl with curly hair) in a very rushed and unprofessional way and was basically told if I was gonna order if not I needed to leave. I had just got there too. Was just watching the ending of the Dodgers inning and was gonna order at the TV commercial break. I mean how do you expect me to stay after that kind of treatment? I then just walked out. Sad thing is I was the 1st to arrive of a party of 12 that eventually all got together that night. I will never spend my hard earned money at any place where im not respected. It's the bare minimum you could do when treating customers. To tell them drink or leave shows me you have no customer service skills. Terrible hire. Will not be returning and spending my money somewhere else in San Diego.

Yelp
False advertising: not a NY Giants bar I recently moved to the area and saw U31 had a Facebook group for Giants fans and is listed on sites as a Giants bar. Went down for the game on Sunday, and noticed a huge Chargers flag out front. I asked the doorman if this was a Giants bar and he said yes but right now they are showing the Chargers on the big screen (and audio) and of course they were. They had the Giants game on some of the smaller TVs along with other NFL games. There were maybe 4 Giants fans including myself there and in talking to to of them they were first timers like myself. So I guess the Giants fans moved elsewhere? Who knows. If I wanted the Chargers game it's on local TV. So dumb to feature that one. The beer selection was iffy (one IPA?) and the wings were breaded like fried chicken and not what I was hoping for. Prices weren't that great either. Just brand yourselves a Chargers bar and don't pretend you're something you're not.

Isaiah B.

Yelp
Came in on a beautiful Thursday evening after a long days work. Corrine and was really friendly and welcoming. Served REALLY good drinks also. Highly recommend:)
google avatar

Jen E.

Yelp
This review for the daytime sports bar at this place and not the nightclub!!! I have been here the two times the last two weeks for the Charger games and am pleasantly surprised! I have always thought of this place as a nightclub and never ventured here during the day... Let alone for sports. This place is a hidden gem for a sports bar. Shhhhhh During the day it is an awesome sports bar with over 20 TVs and one huge projector screen. Yessss, there is sound! They have tons of tables and quite a bit of booths. There is a pool table and a bathroom with a few stalls for both genders. There are drink specials during game day and happy hour is the best. Their happy hour 12-6pm burger deals on Saturdays are the best!!! They are $4 for any burger! If you want fries make sure to say you want to add fries (default beer-battered) for $2 more ( does not say on menu) rather than a basket for 5 dollars on the menu (unless you want tons of fries)! Got the jalepeno burger and it did not disappoint. Bun was perfect and toppings were divine. Meat was good, though I've had better. The fries were probably one of the best fries I've had. Food took a while though and it wasn't busy ...about 20 minutes. No one greeted me until I went to the bar and asked for water. You order at the bar. Can't complain though since the burger was really just $3.75 on the bill. Guess $4 just looks better on the menu ??
google avatar

Kevin C.

Yelp
James is awesome!!! He was busy keeping everyone very happy and their drinks well filled. I ordered the Saturday 12-6pm Happy Hour and Special $4.00 cheeseburger and $2.00 fries and $2.00 Coca-Cola. As I waited for my burger to arrive I noticed a DJ booth and a stage. When my cheeseburger arrived it was hot and pretty big plus the basket was loaded with their beer battered fries. The burger was very tasty and juicy and the fries was cooked to perfection. This place gets busy at nights :-) They have Daily Happy Hour specials. *Leave your little ones at home because this is a 21+ establishment. They have a few screens to keep you occupied along with a billiard table for your hustle :-) The bar is the best place to seat plus they have some booths and tables. **There is no outdoor seating unless you are a troublemaker and get kicked out of this fine establishment. Good place to mingle with your friendly neighbors.

Michaela B.

Yelp
The drinks were good, the employees were nice, the bathroom was clean. The dj on 4/15 sucked though, basically made it un-danceable and not very fun. His playlist was great but he'd play like 15-20 seconds of each song then cut to a song of a whole different genre over and over. I'd go again for drinks at happy hour or something, but not to dance.

Eric A.

Yelp
The WORST service. I don't think the bartender has ever worked in a bar, doesn't know what she's doing, is slow and worst of all rude to folks ordering a drink! This used to be my go to spot but would not go back until they get new bartenders.
google avatar

Catherine C.

Yelp
This is a fun bar to come to for trivia night on Wednesdays! They have a special deal on Wednesdays-- 31 cent wings! We ordered a couple dozen of the buffalo style wings-- the flavor of the sauce was good on the wings, but they could have been a bit crispier, and there could have been a bit more in the way of celery and carrots. I thought it had a comfortably mild kick, but my friend who shared the basket of wings was sweating profusely! For folks who actually want to eat something healthy at a cocktail lounge, they have a pretty good kale and avocado salad. Generous portion for the price and quality-- I really enjoyed this, and it was a nice balance to the heaviness of the wings. Their mule is AWESOME. Try it. They put something in there that makes it taste like apricots, and it is so, so tasty! Tip: Check in on Yelp to waive the cover charge!

Yelp
This place is terrible!!! To start.. we went Halloween weekend (last night) where EVERYONE is dressed up and the bouncer and the manager told my boyfriend and friend they had to take their dodgers jerseys off because it was against dress code. WHAT??? Mind you everyone is dressed up in costumes so no one was in dress code. They said it was the owners preference. BS. Secondly the girl collecting money had the biggest attitude. You can't even see her when you walk in, she's tucked in the corner. Get a light!!! She almost didn't give us our $15 change back and when I asked her she said she was waiting for everyone to get in. OKAY sure. The bartender, who's name I forgot to get was so unprofessional and rude. He was the blonde shaggy haired guy. He was being so sloppy making drinks. This place is just dirty. I've heard it has roaches. Just stay away and go to another bar because there are plenty awesome places down there in north park.

Y O.

Yelp
Their music is terrible. Security guy play music and switch up beat and next song is suddenly slow. They need to hire professional DJ. They don't choose great song either.

Yelp
Came in for the saturday happy hour burger deal they have. 50% off all burgers so its like $3-4 each and they have 7 I think. I got the veggie, the turkey and the brunch burgers. Being my matter with lactose I went sans cheese on all 3. Being CA I added avocado to all 3. Overall the burgers were darn good. Nothing mind blowing but for the price these were a bargain and a good fill indeed. The turkey was my personal favorite. The brunch even without a beef patty added was darn good and likey way better had I added cheese and beef....how could it not? The veggie burger was even far more flavorful then I would a thought it would be. All 3 had bacon and LTO as well mind you. Simple white burger buns with house sauces in the side. Service is fast and the place is pretty quiet around 12-1 but word is it picks up quick later on. So come in Saturday's afternoons, beat the crowd and slam some cheap burgers that hold up with flavor and variety. For $2 you can add fries to any burger as well. Tell the bar staff hello as they are awesome!

Yelp
kinda a hit or miss w the music on Friday/Saturday nights. ive been coming here with friends to dance // drink. it's a good place for ppl who like to dance because there's usually room on the floor to bust out the moves. wish drinks // music were consistently better tho.

Yelp
Great bar, place to hang out with friends enjoy good food and watch sports. Friendly staff, they have wing Wednesday which also allows groups of friends to get together and play trivia. They have dancing, pool tables, 4 old school video games

Yelp
My past memories of U-31 have been awesome ratchet ones getting lit and dancing to good music. Today's experience was a new one... looking for a not so crowded place to watch the football games. Now, if you're looking to watch multiple football games all at once, THIS IS THE SPOT! There had to be 20 TVs in there, with 3 different football games play simultaneously. The bar had a lot of people, but it wasn't overly packed because we were able to find a table to sit at with no issues. The drinks weren't bad. I had the strawberry mule... a little sweet for my taste, but it was served promptly by our bartender, James. I loved that the menu was big and bold, posted right behind the bar. The bar, itself, was very big, clean, and well kept. There were not a lot of staff, for the amount of customers there were, but they were able to cater to everyone's needs. There really wasn't anything we could negatively say about this place. It met our football TV needs, drink needs, and consumer needs. I wish I could say something bad about this place, but I can't. 5 Stars!

Hannah M.

Yelp
This place is absolute trash and tries to get over on people who are NEW to the area. I came here a while back with friends and it was my first time out in this area. They were walking pretty far back behind me, but told me to get in and see how everything was. I look young as hell and I'm assuming that it was pretty apparent I had never went bar hopping in North Park, because once I got in the lady past the bouncer that checked my ID, told me it was $20 dollars to get in!!! I was so freaking confused and thought I heard her wrong that I asked again and she repeated herself. Thank god I wasn't drunk and was smarter than that. I decided to walk outside and verify with my friends that there was no cover to get in at that time. They confirmed and came in with me and of course the lady was quiet and was too intimated to pull a fast one on me when others were around. Once we were inside it was a hot mess. The people that worked there looked pretty rough and trashy. I couldn't get out faster. The music was horrible and let's not get started about the cleanliness. We decided to go across the street and had an amazing time! Please avoid this place at all cost and go to some of the other amazing bars that North Park has to offer!
google avatar

Hannah C.

Yelp
They have a weekly beer pong tournament on Tuesdays that starts at 10pm & is FREE to enter. You have to give the host your names to enter no later than 10pm. Winners receive $100 & 2nd place is $40! Water in the cups so buy your own drink at the bar. They also have pool tables & comfy booths for people with groups. Their music selection honestly is sometimes hit or miss. Sometimes they play the current hits & other times it's random stuff you can't dance or vibe to . That's why they get 3 stars lol
google avatar

Katie G.

Yelp
Do not come here expecting good drinks and a good atmosphere. The drinks are very over priced and not good . The place is way too shot out to charge 7.00 for a weak pineapple vodka. And don't get me started on how bad the DJ was. Why did they hire such a bad DJ?? I will say this a lot of people I know like it here . But I do not get it at all. Maybe I'm just not a North Park person. I don't care to come here. It's just not fun.

Rachel S.

Yelp
We had an.... Interesting... Experience here. My friends food was forgotten about, most finished food items just sat on the table the entire time instead of being picked up, and our server decided to sit at our table and proceed to eat two to-go boxes of wings. She apparently knew someone in our party who had left prior to her sitting down and was totally disrespectful to my friends and I. It was just so bizarre that none of us wanted to say anything to avoid conflict with this person who clearly was not thinking straight. I would personally recommend avoiding this place.
google avatar

Clarissa T.

Yelp
This place is embarrassing to the north park area. Firstly, it's filled with a bunch of barely 21 year olds who baby sit their drinks all night & a bunch of young girls who try to act like they are drunk after just half of their first drink. Went on a Saturday night, dance floor was empty, the DJ sucks big time playing music from like early 2000's. Place looks runs down, we had to pay $5 cover to have 1 drink and leave. Don't waste your time @ this place.
google avatar

Cara B.

Yelp
This is the worst bar I have ever stepped foot in. Horrible managerial ethics and I was physically assaulted by a patron here. The manager didn't care what so ever, the one bouncer on the other hand was actually nice. Felt bad he works for such an unprofessional manager. This place pretty much just sucks in all aspects, unless you want to be surrounded by rude people who will potentially fight you. I definitely will never step foot in the bar again and I highly suggest everyone to go somewhere else. I spoke with a police officer after being assaulted and he informed me this type of thing happens regularly there and it's one of the worst places in SD/North Park. Wish I knew before going in.
