While on a trip through the Delta, I stopped here for a late Lunch while staying up the street for the night. Upon walking in, I was surprised to see all of the trophies won at BBQ contests, especially the big awards from Memphis in May. Those trophies are serious prizes!
I ordered the Combination plate with Potato Salad and Beans. They were out of Sausage, so they substituted 4 ribs for it, to go with Pork Shoulder, Sliced Brisket, a Chicken Quarter, and the sides.
The best thing in my takeout box was the beans. Very good flavor and seasonings. The potato salad was ok, but seemed like it had too much liquid in the dressing.
The Chicken Quarter was the best of my Barbecue meats, and it was very good. The other meats all had a similar flaw---- too smoky, and not quite tender enough. A lot of people think smoke is a good thing coming out of a barbecue pit. Too much smoke can make meat bitter. That is what happened to my dinner. All of the meat was OK, but not up to the quality of the awards in the dining room.
The Ribs were a little tough, and the meat didn't pull away from the bones cleanly. The Spareribs did have a lot of meat on them, but they needed more time in the cooker.
The pulled pork and sliced brisket were fair, but I expected more from a Memphis in May winner.
Next time I'm down in the Delta I may go back on a Friday. I went on a late Saturday afternoon. I suspect my food had been cooked the day before, and wasn't quite right. I think they deserve another chance, though.
