Don U.
Yelp
Udon Mugizo/うどん麦蔵 is an udon place on Western San Jose's Saratoga and De Mille. There's also a location in Mountain View along with San Francisco. If I'm not mistaken, the place used to be another Japanese food place. Don't remember if it's Yoshinoya or what.
I actually was kind of hesitant to try the place years ago. I would go to Shiki for my San Jose udon, but the place is no longer there. I feel now that if I want proper udon, I'll need to go to San Francisco. In the end, did it perform a good job at being a good San Jose udon spot? Yes, but, and it's a big "but", it's missing critical items, which I'll mention towards the end.
Got your usual cute and terrific people. The noodles are made in house, as you're able to take some home. The place does a good amount of tasks right regarding the menu, and it has its own batch of signature udon bowls. There's also an interesting batch of drinks. If I have a self celebration, I have sukiyaki udon to fall back on, which is my favorite non-Shiki udon probably. Ha ha ha!
With all of the praising, why can't the place get a perfect score? The answer goes back to the menu. The place makes me wish that there are another dessert besides the multiple flavors of ice cream, a tea other than houjicha, and the most important element in a chicken udon. Chicken udon is the best soup at curing colds for me, and this is how Shiki became a life saver more times than I can count. (American and Filipino chicken soups are also effective, but chicken udon does the job quicker, and pho has a wonky history with me by having little or worse, no effect.)
Mugizo is a good spot for udon. It has a solid foundation, and as a result, it has solid food. With a tinkering or two, the place would be perfect. Check the menu, and see if you have an additional noodle place yourself.
+/Udon Mugizo is unbelievably marvelous for having vibrant foods, drinks and hospitality.
-/If only it'd add one critical element like a chicken udon.
