Ultimo Coffee Bar Review - South Philly - Philadelphia - The Infatuation

"Ultimo Coffee, which has three locations in Philly, is in the camp of “trendy coffee shops.” It’s not elitist or snobby, and it’s actually casual and comfortable inside. Plus, this one in Newbold has a whole wall filled with beer refrigerators, just in case the coffee isn’t cutting it. Maybe switching from caffeine to alcohol will give you the kick you need to keep writing that novel or even just a few emails." - Sydney McElwee

Stopped for coffee ☕ this morning to go but decided to dine in because the place is so cool and a nice atmosphere. Had a tasty pastry with my coffee. Will definitely revisit soon. Highly recommend 👍

Went here because I missed the Rittenhouse location that’s now closed. Highly recommend their coffee and lemon bars!

Straight espresso was excellent, not bitter and fruit forward.

Google
Really great place to get some work done and enjoy real taste of coffee! Service is quick and best baristas who always make my drink perfect :) Cozy atmosphere and clean environment!! The inside is always very clean and feels comfortable! They clear a line of a good number people in a matter of minutes, all while smiling and continuing to engage with customers!!

Google
Coffee selection is small and coffee is meh. I got an iced coffee and it was very watered down. They have some pastry options but very minimal. They currently offer outdoor seating which is nice but they do have huge indoor seating that could be used.

Google
very good quality oat milk and chai. playing a variety of music from Age of Aquarius to the Kinks. plenty of seating too.

Google
Ultimo Newbold will always and forever be the best coffee shop in Philadelphia, in my opinion. The space is beautiful, the coffee is delicious, thoughtfully prepared, and perfectly roasted, the folks who work there are stylish and friendly, and it is just all around a great place to be. Do yourself a favor and go. And tip your barista. Well.

Yelp
Visited Ultimo on a Monday morning to get some work done. It's a nice local coffee shop with fresh pastries and a simple coffee menu. There was a lot of seating and I was fortunate to find a spot near a wall outlet. The staff members were friendly and efficient. The crowd wasn't particularly diverse but I'm visiting from out of town so don't know if I should charge that to the neighborhood or time of day that I visited. I wouldn't mind visiting again in the future.

Yelp
Nice local cafe. It's a pretty big cafe with lots of seating and natural lighting. The music wasn't blasting and it wasn't too busy so it was a good place to work in. I got an iced hibiscus berry and it was good. Nothing super special.

Yelp
10 out of 10 every time. My go to place for iced cortado's and pastries. They always have a great selection of sweets such as apple cake, ricotta cake, fruit breads, and croissants. All the barristers are courteous and experienced. They also have a large seating area for you to work quietly as well. I love a consistent coffeehouse.

Yelp
It'll do. I mean, it is what it is advertised to be. A coffee shop that sells coffee and pastries, and has places to sit while you consume said coffee and pastry. Decent amount of seating too. Not the most comfortable seating I've ever experienced, but seating nonetheless. 3 choices for creamer - almond, oat, and whole milk. That's the list. Kinda disappointing tbh. More of a skim milk guy. Saying that, I defaulted to the almond milk latte and almond milk in my drip coffee. A serviceable second choice that didn't leave me too disappointed, I reckon. The coffee was fine. Not memorable. Not exciting. Again - it was what it said on the sign. I was a little put off by an action taken by the person working the till. I ordered my drink, inserted my card, and the individual stood there staring at me and what I was doing to see if I would tip or not. When I finally clicked the $1 tip option, the individual then looked away. They didn't even make the drink - their colleague made the drink - so that was a bit off-putting tbh. Anyhow. It is fine. I don't expect I'll come back to Ultimo unless I just so happen to be in the area and really feel like I need/want a coffee. There are better options elsewhere.

Yelp
I was around the area for an appointment and asked them a coffee place recommendation, which led me here. The staff was friendly, prompt, and patient to my questions and was knowledgeable about what to recommend to me when I was indecisive about what to eat. I got a chai oatmilk and a slice of pumpkin bread. The chai was nicely spiced and the bread was dense and paired well with the coffee. There's a good amount of sitting area in the space, everybody was pretty quiet, and the volume of the music wasn't too loud even though I sat close to the speakers. The staff recommended the donuts since they're freshly made everyday and sell out fast but I wasn't craving sweets this morning. I'll get it it next time!

Yelp
This is the spot in south Philly west of Broad for espresso drinks. Sunny corner. It'll make you smile.

Yelp
Came in to Ultimo around 3 on a Sunday. It was vibing, but not too busy at all and the person at the register was easily and nicely moving the line along. I got an iced coffee with vanilla. The woman on the espresso bar made it too quickly after overhearing and forgot the vanilla, which was fine, but even after adding it in (and liquid sugar from the condiment bar) the coffee still wasn't very sweet at all. I kind of looked back through the reviews for this place and it seems their tastes are what has lost them some good ratings in the past. I'm going to have to agree that the (iced) coffee tasted was too bitter for my liking. My friend had an iced hibiscus tea and loved it for what it's worth. Her: "Refreshing and refreshing!" Me: "You already said 'refreshing.'" Her: "Yes!"

Cece A.

Yelp
ordered a black coffee and either their blend is gross or it was watered down. It tasted exclusively like tap water or maybe instant coffee. pretentious vibes. There are MANY coffee shops in Philly better than this one. I would've rather had Dunkin than the gross cup of coffee i had here.
google avatar

Yelp
Cute and quaint spot for coffee and tea. We stopped here for a beverage break after a little tour of Philadelphia. The service was quick, and the drinks were good.

Yelp
Ultimo is one of my top favorite places in Philly for coffee. I order a vanilla iced latte from here several times a week and it's always delicious. I love that you can order online in advance when you're in a hurry - and it's easy to customize (decaf, half-caf, vanilla, etc). I haven't spent much time working indoors due to COVID, but there are nice places to sit outside and enjoy your drink when the weather is nice.

Marissa R.

Yelp
2-hour street parking makes this spot a bit awkward to work from, and the music is a little loud for meeting background noise. but it's not too busy, so I don't feel pressured to move along. The coffee is good but not memorably so.
google avatar

Yelp
The lady who rang me up had a attitude and looked at me dirty. Coffee wasn't good at all either. Ordered a mocha latte w oatmilk and it tasted like water. The decor is nice and all but the vibes are off. Almost feels as though everyone is judging you. Not friendly at all. Please don't come here.

Yelp
Cool place for coffee and beer fanatics! I'm happy this Ultimo location employs more friendly and accepting people. I've heard of bad things at their other location, so thank you to the employees for not being snobs :D This place also doubles as a beer market so check out their selections in the back. I ordered their latte, which comes out to an even $4 after taxes etc. One might think $4 is a lot for a latte, but they use a pretty big cup so I was happy. Wifi here is free and reliable. They post the wifi password at the counter/cashier area. They also offer outdoor seating when the weather is nice outside. One of the walls facing the street is like a garage door so when things get warm, they open up the place and it feels really nice/cool place to be. Parking is a beez here, but they do have 2 "loading" spots out on the front if one is just trying to grab coffee on the go!
google avatar

Gloria E.

Yelp
Came here once and had the best Chai latte I've had the pleasure of trying around these parts. Usually have to customize my order to make it extra flavorful and sweet but this one had a great kick and was the perfect balance of sweet and spicy. They have a nice patio space, albeit not in the sun so it was a bit chilly on a cooler day, but we had a pleasant experience with a nice barista, great drinks and a chill neighborhood!
google avatar

Marc S.

Yelp
Had a great dirty chai and lemon bar. Looking forward to coming back. Seems like a cool spot.

Yelp
I have been to this establishment on and off for years ever since they opened! This place has a chill staff and the vibes are pretty chill as well. They have a nice selection of beer that you can sit in and enjoy or take out. I am not a coffee drinker, but when I do have a cup, I normally get their vanilla latte . It's so good and the latte art is pretty nice too . Their hot chocolate is a good choice too ! I haven't had their pastries, but some of my friends have. They really like the apple turnovers and the croissants. This is a nice spot to do work or to hangout with some friends
google avatar

Yelp
Coffee, tea, cider, and wifi! This feels like your favorite neighborhood coffee spot. Chill music playing, friendly people, and great service. I'm not a huge coffee drinker but people I know who do like coffee enjoy what they offer. I love tea and cider, this place has a solid selection of both. Unlike other coffee spots, this place has a good amount of seating on the inside, and when the weather is nice you can relax outside as well. For this visit, I went with a dirty chai. It looked good and tasted even better. I'll be back again soon. :-)

Jana Marie R.

Yelp
The setting is nice, but the death metal over the loudspeakers made me leave much quicker than I would have liked to. I am not sure why Ultimo would have death metal playing when it is clear people are networking and working in the cafe? It doesn't lend itself to conversation or the vibe of a community coffee shop. Seems a poor business decision. I told one of the workers that the music was very distracting and he smiled and said they'd turn it down, but they did not. I am not interested in frequenting places that are more interested in identity politics than they are in making customers comfortable and want to come back. It doesn't look like the place is hurting for business on a street without any competition, but I would have more respect for Ultimo in general if it was mindful to attract customers of various backgrounds and keep the music a bit more neutral. It doesn't cost anything to change it, and they could gain business with that wisdom. As it stands now, I won't be coming back when I am in south Philly for this very reason.
google avatar

Becca R.

Yelp
I don't know man. Would it kill any of these baristas to smile? Like, I don't need you to be sickeningly sweet, and after many years of being a server myself, trust me, I understand you're busy! But maybe a hello? How's it going? Something more than a grunt or two and obvious displeasure that you have to be talking to customers at all? I love and embrace the whole 'hey-fuck-you-means-I-love-you' South Philly attitude, but the folks behind the counter here are just plain miserable. Don't get me wrong though, not *all* of them are! There's one barista girl with red hair and an angel face who's a total sweetheart! But in my handful of experiences here, most of the counter crew has been pretty rotten. Despite living like 300 feet from this place, I'll still walk far past Ultimo to get coffee elsewhere.

Brittnay K.

Yelp
I really want to like this place, but I feel like the coffee should taste better. Two attempts getting an iced coffee, this time with oat milk (no sweetners). Coffee tastes extremely bitter. Oat milk separated immediately. Not sure what it is, but just not a fan. Which is a bummer because the West Passyunk location is very convenient.
google avatar

Anna D.

Yelp
Of all the Ultimo locations, this one is the most unique. Good amount of space for working, wifi, of course coffee & tea options. They also have sandwiches available at the brew counter. This location also sell beer & ciders!! If it hadn't been too early in the day I would've taken advantage of that! Definitely adds to the "unique" factor for this place too. This time I went with the Guji pour over. Can't say it was my favorite, but satisfied my coffee curiosity for the day :)

Erica W.

Yelp
Just stopped in here for the first time and it was great. The staff was very friendly and the space is sunny and light. They have a nice variety of pastries in addition to the coffee.
google avatar

Jahmal R.

Yelp
This place is awesome if you never had coffee before and don't know better but if you have had coffee before please be ready for a small cup of burnt coffee flavored water what I thought was going to be a pour over just a shit cup of coffee from a warmer if you have respect for yourself you don't buy cheap shoes and shit coffee
google avatar

Yelp
It dawned on me recently: 1. I've become a coffee snob 2. It's just as easy living in the city to grab a bland cup of Joe I don't really enjoy from a standard chain as it is to great a very tasty cup of coffee, carefully made with a pour over or drip method from a small, mom & pop shop with charm and personality. Ok, maybe it's just a few bucks more, but I'll also enjoy that cup and the overall experience that much more and hey, I'm all about supporting local. And so, I've been checking out some local spots. Enter Ultimo. For some truly strange reason I've driven past here for 6 years and never stopped by. It always looked super intriguing and inviting. They have a few outdoor seats as well as an amazing garage door type window thing for and inside/out vibe. Very cool. They're open late and always have people just hanging out. Finally ventured in and dug the vibes. Laid back, and lots of different clientele. From hipsters to Italian men with espresso to people typing away on laptops to families, it's a spot for everyone. What I didn't expect to find and what I wish I had known sooner was that they serve alcohol! Say what?!!! Apparently they have a partnership with South Philly Tap Room down the block! They have 10 taps and bottle options, gems, standards and locals and, well, I think they are geniuses. So if you're ever hungover on a Sunday morning and want to get a caffeine buzz then start drinking again, this is your place! All kidding aside, come meet up with a friend for some chatting and chose your brew or, well, a brew. How awesome?! Oh, and they also sell growlers and IPA glasses. Drafts available in 3 sizes! They have some yummy looking pastries, biscotti, bagels and definitely drool worthy, big flaky croissants. I haven't tried any of them yet, but I think bringing the entire fam back to do so is coming up next. The coffee is pretty great and I eye up the Chemex and other pour over gadgets and accessories they sell each time o visit. Baristas have always been sweet. I'm a fan.

Yelp
What I had: cappuccino Preparation: my coffee went down smooth and the latte art was beautiful. No sugar needed as the espresso here isn't sour like it is at some coffee shops. Atmosphere: nice and clean, plenty of seating. They have one uneven table which almost caused me to lose some of my beautiful cappuccino.

Yelp
Torn... My first love of Philly 's coffee culture nestled in the hipster and gentrified area of point breeze aka Newbold. My past rating of 5 star has been downgraded by one star... Not because of the coffee.. Which I still thoroughly enjoy and consider top 5 in the city. It really comes down to the coffee section itself. On the past 3 visits, I've noticed flies flying around. Of course this is bound to happen since they have garage door/windows, but it's not the greatest look when they serve pastries. I get it, I open the door for fresh air in my business too, and flies do come in, I make the effort to get rid of them though! The day I visited the doors were closed. Just a heads up if manger reads this! I noticed other reviews stating grumpy baristas. I will say I had them too but that never bothered me. I just figured that was a South Philly thing lol. Still love that they do pour over for their house brew after a certain hour. New seats outside. Inside seats are fine but gets busy at various hours!

Zeshan M.

Yelp
Trash service, moderate to decent third wave coffee. Hours are completely wrong. If I was an owner I would do more in terms of sensible customer service trainings Apparently being a jerk here and have terrible customer service and manners is the norm. Will not be returning.

Shannon B.

Yelp
I don't understand the negative reviews. This is the best coffee shop in the area. The technical skills of the baristas are always spot on and the reason I come here (I'm a former barista). If you don't care about classics being prepared correctly, go somewhere else, I guess.

Andrew C.

Yelp
It only takes one bad interaction to ruin a good thing. I was on a walk with my dog and decided to support a local business and grab a cup of coffee. As soon as we walked in the barista behind the counter literally screamed, "YOU CANT HAVE A DOG IN HERE YOU NEED TO GET YOUR DOG OUT OF HERE!" 1. There was no inquiry as to whether my dog was of service or not, and 2. Why would your knee jerk reaction be to scream that instead of verbalize the message calmly. Needless to say, I was taken aback and embarrassed. We won't be returning, especially not when there are other places within walking distance such as two eagles cafe and dunkin.
google avatar

Yelp
Continuing my Yelp journey, I ate at Barcelona nearby and the staff recommended Ultimo Coffee Bar. Very glad I walked the few blocks to experience the atmosphere and coffee. The staff were friendly and helpful and the coffee, aromas, and atmosphere were amazing.
google avatar

Gino C.

Yelp
Always an excellent cup of coffee at Ultimo. And if you like Americanos, they may pour the best in the city. Don't take my word for it, try for yourself! My kids like their lemon bars "almost as much as Nana Lin's," but since Nana lives in California, these are the go to. :) It's a great spot for getting some work done or meeting up with a couple friends or business associates. When the weather is warm, the garage door comes up and the whole place feels like outside seating.
google avatar

Kirk E.

Yelp
I had the absolute worst experience with this place... Cockroach. In. Bottom. Of. My. Coldbrew. So disgusting! I received a refund and that's it... Check your coffees people!

Yelp
I cannot tell a lie, this is a great coffee shop. I recommend the espresso, black. They also offer beer if you're looking for something harder.

Yelp
We're visiting from Florida and staying in an AirBnB near here. This place has been perfect - great coffee, large beer selection, and chill vibe. I've taken my daughter to do her homework, grabbed coffee each morning, and even had our place's growler filled with some local beer. I would be a regular if we lived nearby!

Yelp
Ultimo Coffee is a local specialty coffee shop that's located at 1900 South 15th Street in Philadelphia. This coffee shop has a hip rustic look to it that I absolutely love. On one side of their walls they have their own beans that you can buy, coffee filters, coffee cups, and even tools for making coffee (Chemex and aeropresses) and on another wall they have various alcoholic drinks that you can choose from if you're into that. When I first walked in I was welcomed immediately by not only the staff but by their festive Christmas decorations. They have a nice little Christmas tree, Christmas lights that line their walls and the entrance, and paper snowflakes on the wall. Overall, while sitting down in Ultimo Coffee, it didn't feel like I was sitting inside of a coffee shop, rather it was more like being at home. I think this would be a perfect place for students to come and study or it would also make a great place to just meet up with friends and catch up. Furthermore, I would like to say the customer service here is good. The staff makes you feel welcomed and the service is very fast. Also, the staff dynamic seems to be great as well; the workers seem to be very friendly with one another and are on good terms. Overall, the customer service at Ultimo Coffee is good/great. For this visit at Ultimo, I ordered a hot chocolate and it was a little bland to me. It was nothing special and I think it was quite pricey for how it tasted. However, they did present the hot chocolate very well (very instagram-able in my opinion). In the future, I will definitely be trying their coffee, as that is what they're known for. Overall, Ultimo is a solid coffee shop and I would recommend it those who are looking for an aesthetic study location.

Yelp
Hidden gem in south philly. Nice atmosphere where you can do your work in peace and friendly service. Cappaucino was perfect. Nice beer selection if you're not in the mood for coffee.

Yelp
Great local coffee shop. Sat for a few hours and did some work, coffee was great, music was chill and the ambience was just what I was looking for. I will certainly come back for more coffee and chill afternoons.

Yelp
First time here! Was greeted immediately. The coffee is priced appropriately ($3) and very tasty. They have tables outside, which is perfect for summer. Can't wait to come back!

Yelp
I really love Brew. I often visit for take-out, grabbing a six pack from their great bottle selection. I'll fill my growler now and again when they have an extra special draft. Employees at Brew are polite, ready to grab cold ones from the basement. I'm happy to see that Brew now has a separate Yelp page from Ultimo- that's where I'll put my 5 stars. Unfortunately Brew is attached to Ultimo, and I have never encountered rude customer service as consistently as I have at this coffee shop. Every time. The coffee is good, Counter Culture. The space is great, bright and open. But the service feels like a Portlandia episode about a New Yorker's couldn't-care-less attitude. I'm not asking for smiles, friendliness, hand-holding. Just a general standard of politeness will do. No eye-rolls. Even a friend visiting from out of town mentioned it to me after he grabbed a coffee before we met. It's disappointing. Go elsewhere.
google avatar

Vinny P.

Yelp
Just as solid as its older southern brother from the same mother. I had the pleasure of meeting up with a good friend here on his leaving Philly tour. We got coffee, sat outside, told funny stories and had a blast. I find the parking at the other location to be a bit easier but that's the nature of the beast when dealing with G-Ho. It just means that I will most likely bike to this one when I come to it. The coffee is superb and the staff is friendly. Not much else they can do to improve in my opinion.

Adam T.

Yelp
Been coming to Ultimo for a few weeks now as I live not far from here and have heard decent things. Iced coffee has an interesting taste and is very good and strong. Iced latte is great but not strong Vanilla latte is tasty but not very hot, or strong Staff is average not overly excited but that's not going to keep you from going in to enjoy the nice calm atmosphere. Nice corner coffee spot with outdoor seating.

Anthony A.

Yelp
3 stars for having non dairy options, pleasant interior and maybe 2 polite employees. Some of the employees act like you are bothering them when you want to buy a drink. I mostly stopped going since the quality did not justify the attitudes.
google avatar

J M.

Yelp
Why does this coffee shop only have 3.5 stars? I liked it a lot. Coffee was good, shop was bright and relaxing, people were friendly. I'd definitely return again.
google avatar

Alyssa I.

Yelp
Okay, so it's important to note that this not an ideal spot to get any work or socializing done. The entire coffee shop is shared with a little pub of sorts and there really isn't any room at all when it comes to seating or standing for that matter. The coffee is delicious, but there are no size options and very limited flavor options. It was quite expensive at that. I won't be back.
google avatar

Katie O.

Yelp
This is a great coffee shop if you want to drink coffee or beer and work. Attached to Ultimo is Brew which has a large selection of beers. First: the coffee shop. The coffee is always good. They have a selection of specials that change weekly (I think). The baristas seem to know their coffee well. They take their time making specials coffees like lattes and cappuccinos. Sometimes, the employees aren't the nicest, but they serve the coffee fine, just not always with a smile. Sometimes, it seems as though its an inconvenience asking questions. But, that doesn't stop me from coming back. You can work at a table for hours and no one will bother you. The interent is usually reliable. They have limited food, especially later in the day. The pastries are always good though! SEcond: Brew--the people who work at Brew know their beer. You can come in with an idea and walk out with some delicious beers you would never have picked by yourself. They have most of the beers cold downstairs, you just have to ask! They started having sandwiches back at the beer section and they are good, just a bit pricey. During the summer months, they open a garage door window, which makes it feel like you are outside. They also have some tables outside. Worth a visit if you like coffee and beer, and let's be honest, who doesn't!

Yelp
Coffee and service was great. I ordered a coffee and a chocolate chip and walnut cookie. The cookie was delicious and was handed to me with great service and a smile. The coffee is very smooth and I really appreciate the time spent on it. I brought my every day mug in for them to put the coffee in and without asking the barista cleaned my mug... not just a rinse either. I saw the barista brush and get rid of all the grime inside. I can see all of the steel again. I just think that service is above and beyond because I'm sure the barista didn't want the mug's gunk to mess with the time spent on the pour over. Thank you. I read some of the other yelp reviews that said it is watery coffee here. You may not be used to good/smooth coffees which pour over makes taste even smoother where that "watery" thought might have come from. Sip slow and try to taste the flavors in it.
