It dawned on me recently:
1. I've become a coffee snob
2. It's just as easy living in the city to grab a bland cup of Joe I don't really enjoy from a standard chain as it is to great a very tasty cup of coffee, carefully made with a pour over or drip method from a small, mom & pop shop with charm and personality. Ok, maybe it's just a few bucks more, but I'll also enjoy that cup and the overall experience that much more and hey, I'm all about supporting local.
And so, I've been checking out some local spots. Enter Ultimo. For some truly strange reason I've driven past here for 6 years and never stopped by. It always looked super intriguing and inviting. They have a few outdoor seats as well as an amazing garage door type window thing for and inside/out vibe. Very cool. They're open late and always have people just hanging out.
Finally ventured in and dug the vibes. Laid back, and lots of different clientele. From hipsters to Italian men with espresso to people typing away on laptops to families, it's a spot for everyone.
What I didn't expect to find and what I wish I had known sooner was that they serve alcohol! Say what?!!! Apparently they have a partnership with South Philly Tap Room down the block! They have 10 taps and bottle options, gems, standards and locals and, well, I think they are geniuses. So if you're ever hungover on a Sunday morning and want to get a caffeine buzz then start drinking again, this is your place! All kidding aside, come meet up with a friend for some chatting and chose your brew or, well, a brew. How awesome?! Oh, and they also sell growlers and IPA glasses. Drafts available in 3 sizes!
They have some yummy looking pastries, biscotti, bagels and definitely drool worthy, big flaky croissants. I haven't tried any of them yet, but I think bringing the entire fam back to do so is coming up next. The coffee is pretty great and I eye up the Chemex and other pour over gadgets and accessories they sell each time o visit.
Baristas have always been sweet. I'm a fan.
