The 21 Essential Maui Restaurants

"Roughly 16 years ago, David and Ululani Yamashiro made it their mission to perfect Hawai‘i’s favorite refreshment: shave ice. They succeeded, creating immaculate snowballs of ice shaved extra fine and doused with house-made syrups. Syrup specialist Emi Yoshida continues to concoct new flavors, so alongside standards like mango, cherry, and pineapple you might find Thai tea, jamaica, salted caramel, and strawberry milk. The team makes each small-batch syrup with all-natural local ingredients, except for a few throwbacks like electric blue raspberry. As you wait in line, choose your three flavors, add a base of ice cream or adzuki beans, then crown your creation with haupia cream, matcha mochi, or li hing mui drizzle. If the options overwhelm you, ask the staff for suggestions. Ululani’s lost two locations in the Lahaina fire, but you can still sate your sweet tooth at three other spots in South and Central Maui." - Shannon Wianecki, Bill Addison

Google
We heard really good things about Ululani and can finally tell you it’s… good. We had high expectations and it didn’t disappoint but definitely didn’t blow us out of the water either. They have an extensive menu with some pretty interesting flavors if trying new things is your speed. We ordered strawberry shave ice and a sunset beach shave ice. The syrup here falls a bit fast so eating it quicker may be better. The syrup flavor was good, not outstanding. The snow cap is also okay, not anything to write home about. I think we may have gone into here expecting a bit too much which is why there’s a tinge of disappointment in this review but it really is a solid shave ice at the end of the day.

Google
If you're looking for shave ice in Maui, then hit this spot. Refreshing flavors and tons of options to choose from. I've tried the POG, Grape and Litchi flavors. Litchi was my top favorite. If you like mochi, don't forget to top yours with mochi on top. But the place is quite popular and there's always a wait but the line moves quickly though because their service is pretty quick!

Google
Fantastic Shaved Ice place close to the airport. We stopped by on our way out of Maui and it was a fab treat in the heat. The server was very helpful since it was our first time she recommended we try the sunset beach (passion fruit, guava, mango & pineapple) and it did not disappoint. The shaved ice was nice soft fluffy and it had sucked in all the flavors of the syrups. We chose to add the macnut ice cream which was fantastic and gave the shaved ice creamy texture. All in all recommend this place.

Google
I’ve enjoyed Ululani’s shaved ice many times before and always had a great experience. However, the Kahului location was a big disappointment. The shave ice lacked syrup, leaving the bottom half just plain ice, and the snowcap was barely there. They also forgot to include the ice cream I paid for—though they did give me a scoop separately after I pointed it out. Unfortunately, based on this experience, I won’t be returning to this location.

Google
Fun little spot! The servers behind the counter were great - made every effort to engage each customer, especially young families. The ice is shaved very fine and they put on the perfect amount of syrup - plus they make an effort every time to tell each customer to come back if they need more syrup. Parking is fine, with plenty around the corner next to the pub. They also have a key for the washrooms - which once again is around the corner from the pub.

Google
I guess my experience was abnormal. I didn’t think it was so great. The strawberry didn’t waste like anything. Wasn’t even sweet. I had the Sunset Beach (Passion Orange, Mango, Guava) which tasted good but ran out of syrup about halfway through the ice. Not sure why cuz she poked holes all over it before pouring. The ube and calamansi were fine though not sure I would select those flavors for shave ice again. The service was excellent. The gal worked diligently and as quickly as possible for being a one person show. There’s one picnic table to sit. Kind of messy all around it with syrup and stuff but I guess what can you do about that.

Hester Pamela

Google
Lovely lady at the counter who took our orders. Welcoming, cheerful and kind. Delicious shaved ice. And the important thing is to add ice cream at the bottom! Please note that the other location in Kihei may have different new flavors. We went to the other location hoping to enjoy lemon lavender and sad to find out that they dont have it there.

Google
10/10 I recommend them!! Their shave ice is like no others! Soft, and delicious, I chose Ube and coconut syrup on top of Roselanis Haupia ice cream and topped with Mochi ! Ugh I would eat this every day if I could lol . I Love that the syrup isn’t runny like most places , it just sticks to the ice so well! Also staff here are pretty on point and do things in a timely manner which is appreciated when you’re on a limited time , Mahalo to everyone here

Yelp
Best shave ice ever! Great flavor, incredible texture and wonderful creamy ice cream.

Yelp
What's a trip to Maui without stopping at the famous Ululani's shave ice stand! Located just minutes from the airport, this was a perfect stop to grab a sweet treat in the heat. They have a couple different sizes but since I'm not the biggest sweets person, the kid's size was perfect for me. They have a ton of different flavor options but the one thing I always get is adding a scope of ice cream. It adds a whole other level to an already amazing dessert. Also don't forget to add the condensed milk bc dessert with condensed milk is always a good idea. When we got there, there was a bit of a line and a lot of families but it moved relatively quick. They had two people working, and they were able to get the desserts out in a timely manner. They have a couple park bench tables, if you want to eat it there but either way be sure to grab some extra napkins.

Yelp
After Sparky's, we stopped by Ululani's Shave Ice, and it was amazing. Even with long lines, the two workers handled everything really well and kept things moving. The shave ice itself was perfect--definitely lived up to the hype. This spot is a must-visit, and we'll definitely be back next time!

Yelp
Located right near the airport, a nice pit stop after landing to start your Hawaii vacation! I opted for the tropical flavors - passion orange, mango and guava, and added a scoop of macadamia nuts ice cream. Simply magical!

Yelp
One of the things I find myself doing a lot while visiting the islands is getting shave ice for the whole family. It's refreshing and fun and not overly filling. This location is a stand intended for take away; although there is one picnic table and a couple of benches for folks lucky enough to be in the right place at the right time. Most patrons it seems, at least when we visited, were hanging out somewhere in the strip mall eating their frozen treat. This location is quite busy. We stood in line quite a while waiting to place our order, I was thinking I guess it must be good. Well, it was good. Lots of flavor options and the girls working when we visited were friendly and helpful, and working really hard to keep up! It does seem that the product here is superior to that served at Surfing Monkey. With all the locations they have, I'm sure we'll be back.

Yelp
Shave ice was good. Service was fast. Ambiance was good! Loved the different flavors. So hit the spot

Yelp
Visited this place while on my family day trip. What stood out was their extensive menu and very fine shave ice. I ordered the large size with passion orange, lilikoi, and lychee. The toppings were snow cap and mochi. The price was a bit more than what I'd like to pay for shave ice, coming from Oahu. But no regrets. It really cooled me down under the hot maui sun. Check em out!
google avatar

Chelsea A.

Yelp
My first shave ice experience! It was excellent. Nothing like a snow cone, shave ice is smooth and creamy. I chose lilikoi, lychee, and guava, with a snow cap. It was amazing. This location is a little walk up spot, with one table and a few benches. There was one family ahead of us, and it took about 10 mins for our order to be ready. Highly recommend!

Yelp
If I could rate this place over 5 stars I would! I am allergic to tree nuts and was amazed at how allergy-aware the staff was on both days I visited. They have an allergy protocol in place that included changing their gloves, changing the shaver for the ice, and using clean sticks to poke holes in shave ice. I did not order ice cream, but I noticed they have a separate scoop for their macadamia nut flavor to lessen the chances of cross-contamination to their other two flavors. I ordered shave ice both days and it was delicious!!! So creamy and flavorful, I still crave it daily since our trip. My boyfriend ordered a scoop of their coconut ice cream and said it was amazing.

Yelp
Shave ice in Hawaii is always a must and so is a visit to Ululani's. We've tried the Bay Area location in Livermore but it's just not the same. Service here is always speedy with a smile, even when they're busy. This location near Kahului airport is a small kiosk so really an order and go location. I've had Ululani's so many times, it's difficult to pick one favorite. My top favorites are - Haleakala (leche, coconut and snow cap) Coconut Lover's (coconut, tiger's blood and pina colada) Broke Da Mouth (pickled mango, li hing mui) Party in the Mouth (tamarind, passion fruit, calamansi) Such a cold and refreshing treat when it's hot!

Yelp
Our group came here yesterday (9/13/24) for shaved ice since it was recommended to us by a friend of a friend in my group. The line was relatively short, but I can tell it could get really busy since it takes time to serve each shaved ice cup. We ordered the Sunset Beach and it was really good! The flavors were really tasty and the ice was amazingly smooth! In fact, it's probably the smoothest shaved ice I've ever had. Definitely better than Matsumoto's on Oahu. We will definitely go here again (probably the next day) since it was THAT good!

Sherrelyn M.

Yelp
Absolutely Divine snowballs!! Great combinations and topping options. Melts in you mouth......
google avatar

Travis P.

Yelp
This definitely is the best Shaved Ice around. Came in and shared a regular size with sunset beach flavor. Added coconut ice cream, and azuki beans and did not regret it. The ice was sort and the syrups weren't overly sweet. The cashier was super nice in walking us through all the top flavors. This is definitely a must try if you're in Maui.

Yelp
My cruise ship had a Kahului port stop. Came by because I had a craving for shaved ice and saw this place on Yelp. Directions were off using Google but I was able to ask a security guard. This is a tiny stand with some bench seating. There is no inside seating. I ordered their keiki (kids size) No Ka Oi with macadamia nut ice cream and an ube snow cap. Dessert was ready timely and looked amazing. The taste was excellent. I love ube and am glad I noticed the special offering (not on regular menu). Keiki size was more than enough for me. Staff was friendly. Will definitely be back when I'm in the area

Yelp
ULULANI'S ICE ICE BABY | shave ice is a must in Hawaii so of course we had to go to the famous Ululani's. We were en route to dinner and on noticed the unassuming shave ice shack was on our way - so of course we made a shave ice break! The shave ice was soft as snow and not super icy. We decided to share one and ordered the Mango, Lychee and Strawberry with Snow Cap (condensed milk) and it was pretty tasty - not overly artificial tasting since they make their own syrups. My only regret is not trying the mochi topping, as well, since all the reviews I see about it are RAVES. Next time we're in Maui, definitely coming back and asking for an extra serving of Mochi LOL
google avatar

Han V.

Yelp
Service was fantastic and super friendly despite being so busy. The ice was finely shaved and they poked plenty of holes to allow the syrups to seep through and flavor all the ice. Definitely worth a spot for a quick refreshing treat!
google avatar

Oz E.

Yelp
After hearing a TON of recommendations, my family and I decided to give this spot a try. This place really did not uphold its name. The shaved ice was at best average. The flavors were rich (you could taste the fruit), but the lower parts of the shaved ice were practically flavorless. The boba was a nice touch, but nothing particularly special. The woman at the counter was very nice, but would often stop mid-order to help the other lady in preparing (it took about 30 minutes to place our order and receive the dessert). Overall, this place is most definitely not a must stop: it's cute, but 100% not the best shaved ice on the island.
google avatar

Julia H.

Yelp
A cute shaved ice stand, we stopped by the Kahului Ululani's Hawaiian Shave Ice right after arriving in Maui - I was a little bummed they were out of all their sugar free flavor options, but happy to get a cool treat for the mildly humid heat we arrived to. There were a few parties ahead of us, but each shaved ice order is made-to-order! Owner/cashier was nice making chit-chat with everyone as they ordered at the window. Hubby and I shared the Ulu size w/ Coconut & Thai Tea Flavors and the pandan mochi. I liked the mochi, but hubby was a bit indifferent about it. The Coconut and Thai Tea flavors were good though. We got it with vanilla ice cream, but next time and all future orders will be with their Haupia (coconut) ice cream. We wanted to swing by this location before we left as well Maui, since it's close to the airport but it was temporarily closed so we went to the Wailuku location nearby instead. Parking is shared with lot by a Maui Gas Station on Dairy Street. There's one table by the stand, and a couple benches along the side to sit. Otherwise, you can enjoy in your car!

Yelp
No trip to Hawaii is complete without shaved ice! This place is very professional and you can tell the workers are well versed at what they do. There are so many flavor options and since we came here right before going up Haleakala, I decided to go with the "Haleakala" flavor combo, which is milk and coconut. When you first start eating, it has the texture of fluffy snow. But as you work your way to the bottom, it basically becomes little ice cubes. My particular shaved ice only had flavor on the top 2/3. The bottom third was basically just a flavorless ice cube. Would I come back next time? You bet.
google avatar

Bhamidipati M.

Yelp
The best! The best shaved ice on all of Hawaii! The syrups are made from fresh fruit and taste translates very well to the shaved ice. The service was very quick and prompt! We had to go back several times to get the best shaved ice on all of Hawaii! Highly highly recommended this shaved ice spot!
google avatar

Jazzy S.

Yelp
We came here multiple times during our trip, and this was definitely a favorite. Great quality and very tasty. We waited for a while, but it was well worth it. Service was good. Ambiance is like a walk up outdoor counter. I love the green tea, coffee flavors and the condensed milk!
google avatar

Wendy N.

Yelp
Our favorite stop before heading to the airport on our way back home. I really miss the Ululani's that used to be at the Hyatt in Kaanapali. Nothing better than hanging by the pool all day and then go up the walkway for a shave ice. This location is just as good and the ice is nice and fine.
google avatar

Angel C.

Yelp
"All shave ice is not created equal." Ululani doesn't lie! If you're craving for quality, tasty shave ice but would like to skip the long lines at the Kihei location, head over to Ululani's Kahului! This location is barely a five minute drive from the airport and the shave ice quality is just as good.I should know; my brother-in-law is addicted to Ululani's and we visited the Kihei location at least twice in one week. During our visit, we noticed the girl who rang up our order also started making our shave ice before letting another girl finish making our orders. The Kahului location has fewer workers and less seating, but wait times are much shorter and fewer pesky feral birds. Do not feed the birds! My husband and I enjoy the Broke Da Mouth, Party in the Mouth, and Pick Me Up. We'd love to try Sunset Beach and No Ka Oi one day.
google avatar

Eleanor A.

Yelp
The best shaved ice I've ever had! Thanks so much I will definitely come again. I recommend getting the snow cap
google avatar

Sara B.

Yelp
After a full morning at the beach, shaved ice is a great way to cool off. We stopped at the Kahului Ululani's and the service was fast and friendly. It's a small location, so there's not a lot of seating. Luckily we went when it wasn't so busy. I tried their coconut vegan snow cap and I was surprised it was delicious. It also wasn't coconutty...
google avatar

Pree R.

Yelp
I've now made it a tradition to have Hawaiian shave ice at least once on any trip to Hawaii. I stayed close to the airport on my last day in Maui, and saw that Ululani was not too far away. It's also in a strip mall with a HUGE parking lot so that was a plus. There were so many choices, and again I decided to stick to something regional and "authentic". I went with one of their pre-made combos, Broke Da Mouth, which I believe was mix of mango and li hing mui. I also was able to top it off with mochi! With tip, the regular size was a little under $10. One person seemed to be manning the stand, so it took about 10 minutes to get my cup. Overall, the flavor profile was perfect. I feel like the mango overpowered the li hing mui (surprisingly), but it was still delicious overall!
google avatar

Alyssa A.

Yelp
We heard such great things about their Hawaiian Shave Ice that we had to squeeze it in right before heading to the airport for our flight home (it's only about a 5 minute drive between the two). Their shave ice is so fresh and flavorful. They have a larger menu, so you can choose to either build your own or pick from some of their popular combinations. We built our own - their original size (the Ulu) is enough to share between two if you want. We did a Haupia ice cream base with coconut, pineapple, and calamansi flavoring - all so fruity and perfect compliments to each other. The snow cap on top just brought it all together with the right amount of sweetness. It's the perfect cold treat to enjoy. There was one employee working when we visited, but he was efficient as well as being super friendly and fun to talk with. It's a little stand, so you order at the counter, and they have a few seats outside to enjoy your ice. Overall, a wonderful stop for some of the best shave ice. Definitely recommend making a visit.
google avatar

Steven N.

Yelp
Hawaii is known for exceptional shave ice and this place is no different. This was the first thing we tried coming off the plane, especially because it was really close to the airport. The flavors were on point and very refreshing, especially in the summer when the heat hits you. We had the Passion fruit, mango, and guava flavors and they tasted just as advertised. If you want a sweet treat, look no further from this spot.
google avatar

Paige T.

Yelp
This is a small stand location of Ululanis in a strip mall, with limited picnic table seating. I loved the variety of flavors and super soft ice! Here, I discovered how delicious tamarind shave ice is- definitely recommended! I got the Party in the Mouth, which included tamarind, passion fruit, and calamansi- very refreshing! The "kids" size was more than sufficient, haha. Friendly and helpful service, too.
google avatar

Sigrid W.

Yelp
I went for the kids size, which is pretty large in itself. No way could I eat a large before it all melts. I opted for the Na Ka Oi otherwise known as "The Best" and it lives up to it's name. When in Hawaii you might as well go for the tropical flavors, which in this case is Mango, Coconut and Passionfruit (Lilikoi). You also get a choice of ice cream to add. I went with the Macadamia Nut ice cream. You can't get this stuff on the mainland. It was wonderfully smooth and full of flavor. Not an unflavored spot (plain white ice) in the entire dish. Good job.
google avatar

Hadas E.

Yelp
Considering this was voted Maui's #1 shaved ice place by Yelp, this spot definitely disappointed me. Coming in I was super excited because of the amazing reviews but just the ordering process was tiring. There are only 2 women in the stand and they are making another order in the middle of someone else ordering. We ordered our first snow cone and then had to wait to order the next. The production is also slow as we had to wait more than 10 minutes for a cone. The flavors do taste very fresh and clean and the ice cream underneath is pretty good. The place is nicely decorated but only one table is available. If I wanted shaved ice again, I would not come here.
google avatar

Peg S.

Yelp
Our favorite shave ice and happy to hear they now have a Bay Area location. This is an outpost in Kahului for take out only but it was a nice hit before getting on the airplane. The portion sizes are more reasonable ((looking at you, Surfing Monkey Hawaiian Shave Ice) and the shave ice was delicate and melts in your mouth. My No Ka Oi ((mango, coconut, and passion fruit) was "the best" - the coconut purée was so smooth and paired well with the sweetness of the mango and passion fruit flavors. They also sell cute merch, like stickers and t-shirts.
google avatar

Nikki A.

Yelp
I never got a chance to try ululanis on Oahu although it's been on my list. I was visiting Maui and made it a point to try it out here since highly recommended by a co worker. We visited this location and it was busy at first but the 2 staff were working hard. We got up to the line and were greeted with smiles and thanked us for waiting we got a a mix of the strawberry mango and guava with add of the vanilla ice cream and snow cap topping. I have to say this is on my top shave ice list. So good I went again the next day. Thankfully the next day there was no line. This place is pretty much grab and go. There was only one picnic table and I think I saw one bench. In a semi big parking lot we didn't have trouble finding parking. A must try
google avatar

Steven W.

Yelp
All the Ululani fresh juice syrups and homemade mochi on snow-like textured shave ice with a fraction of the wait of other branches! Perfect for a last minute stop right before taking off (or immediately upon landing).
google avatar

Dominic V.

Yelp
Don't get me wrong, you cannot go wrong with shaved ice. They are all equally delicious, however, I only have this an average rating because we can get Ululani's on the mainland in CA. Please keep that in mind for this review. That being said, if you can't get this and you're visiting, you have to try shaved ice with the sweet cream and the flavor of your choosing. This place is on the corner tucked away in a tiny plaza situation with a lot of parking. It's only take out style and it has a small picnic table on the side and a few benches nearby. You can get your choosing of 3 flavors and there's a lot to choose from for toppings. On a hot day, long day, sunny day, rainy day, shaved ice is always a good dessert.
google avatar

Deborah N.

Yelp
Wow, first time trying shaved ice and it did not disappoint! Not only was the shave ice good but so was the macadamia ice cream at the bottom! This is the best shaved ice on Maui!
google avatar

Tony R.

Yelp
Long line = good sign It was worth the wait! My kids had the blue raspberry, cherry and lime and they loved it. I had the broke da mouf which is Hawaiian talk for man this is so good it literally broke my mouth and I'm not sure how to repair it with normal Kine food ever again Highly recommend and yet wish I would have tried the ice cream in the bottom and added the condensed milk on top. Next time! Will definitely be back! Bring the fam, come hang out at the picnic tables out front. Definitely a chill vibe here, come stay a while and enjoy some of the best shaved ice Maui us to offer!
google avatar

Sayaka S.

Yelp
Had to get Hawaiian shaved ice right when we landed!! It's 5 min from the airport and a perfect start to a Hawai'i trip. I got the POG but you can't go wrong with any flavors! The ice is incredibly soft and the texture is indescribable. The owner was really friendly and even noticed we needed more POG in the core of our shaved ice and offered to add some more. Ambiance is a classic little shack and feels like it should be right next to the water. Definitely recommend!!
google avatar

Brialee N.

Yelp
So cool to see them shape the snow with chopsticks. There was a nice size line- we are excited to try for the first time! The two girls were SO sweet and did such a great job cranking out the orders. We ordered two keiki one with icecream (vanilla) and POG and then one with blue raspberry, tigersblood and coconut. Wow! So soft and so delicious, perfect cool down treat after Hookipia beach!
google avatar

Teah R.

Yelp
If you are visiting Hawaii, getting shaved ice at a Ululani's location is a MUST. Some might say, "but it's just ice" and they are right but it's the best and smoothest ice ever! It's fresh, soft, and flavorful. We had a great experience at this location. The man who was working was very personable and you could tell he loves his job. He interacted with everyone he served, asked questions about where they're from, and just had very free flowing natural conversations. The only thing I could say needs word is signage. Our GPS took us to the plaza Ululani's was in but we could not find the shop at first. We had to walk the entire plaza before we found it. Overall, 10/10 experience and I want it again!
google avatar

Eve K.

Yelp
Delish as usual! The girls working the counter were fabulous and the flavors were amazing. Treats cake out quickly and we were able to easily get extra syrup. The table outside makes a nice place to relax and enjoy this great treat!

Matthew W.

Yelp
Due to the fires affecting the Lahaina and Kihei locations, the Kahului location is the only one open (other than Paia's). Sadly, it's just a little stand (unlike its much larger counterparts), though it's relatively the same shave ice flavors. The staff across all Ululani's generally just tends to be very friendly and this location was no exception. There's not really much seating at this location, save for a table and a bench, so you're forced to stand around and eat your shave ice. I usually get Coconut Lovers (Coconut, Tigers blood aka Cherry, and Pina colada), or Hawaiian Root beer float (Coconut, root beer and vanilla), but I chose Ube and Thai iced tea (seasonal) with Haupia (coconut) ice cream underneath. The Ube pairs really well with it, and I'd probably order that combination again. I would say that Ululani's shave ice, while delicious and very well-made, does melt quicker than other shave ice, especially when it's on top of ice cream. And the mochi is really average here (tasting like unbaked dough). Still, Ululani's is an experience you can't miss when on Maui.
google avatar

George S.

Yelp
If you haven't been here, you got to go here for some delicious shaved ice when in Maui! It's always our 1st stop after landing at the Kahului airport. My go to shaved ice flavor is the Local Motion (Li hing mui, mango, and pineapple syrups), macadamia nut ice cream at the bottom of the bowl, and dusted with more Li hing mui powder. We also had the No Ka Oi (Mango, Coconut, Passion fruit) with toasted coconut, Mochi, and ("Snow cap"-sweetened condensed milk toppings. Soooooo good!! You can't go wrong with any flavor you choose, so just choose one of the local favorites, or 1 to 3 flavors you like and enjoy! It's a small venue, but they're good at getting the shaved ice out in a timely manner. There is a small table and a bench on the side to enjoy your shaved ice. Service is always great and the workers are always friendly and helpful. Happy Nom Nom!
google avatar

Alex s.

Yelp
Small little stand but won't be disappointed one of the best Hawaiian shaved ice cream staff friendly, prices reasonable and so many choices. All of the recommended choices are delicious and would try it with the coconut ice cream!

Yelp
Hands down the best shaved ice I've ever had! They have tons of options to customize, or you can order from popular/recommended combos. Got the POG and had no regrets - it was delicious!!! The girls there were super friendly and helpful as well! We went about 30 min before closing and they were still extremely patient and kind to patrons. Great sweet treat to beat the hot weather.

Yelp
Perfect treat for the hot Maui weather!! It's a casual spot on the side of a gas station but the shaved ice is pretty darn good! The service is fast and friendly! The loveliest people served us our heavenly treat! It's so good! Try the Mochi topping! I highly recommend!

Yelp
Super soft shave ice. Good flavors. The staff are really friendly. So far they have the softest ice.
