Saw Umai opened up near Nuggets and while a few other shops have opened in the Sacramento area, they didn't last long. I hope this one does! I found out just recently that this establishment used to be Falafel Corner and seems like my credit card is also reading it as Falafel Corner. I came in, right when they opened which meant no line and there happened to be another customer ahead of me.
Menu was straightforward. Great descriptions of toppings for all of the hot dogs. They also offer burgers, noodles, fries and make it a combo if you like. As I walked in, I wasn't really greeted by anyone. The cashier went up to the register and waited for me to order. He stood there waiting without asking if I had any questions or to let him know when I'd be ready. Then I think he got impatient and went to the kitchen to see if he could try to busy himself.
Finally, I was ready to order and decided on the Shinjuku Shadow. The cashier asked me something but he was very soft and to me, it sounded like he mumbled something and wasn't very clear. I had to ask him to repeat what he said a couple of times but even so, I just couldn't hear him. But I think since I didn't respond to his question, he ended up phrasing it differently which was, "Would you like to make it a combo?". I'm sorry but I couldn't hear him nor could I understand what he was trying to say because he was so soft spoken and mumbled it so quickly that I was shocked when I realized what he was trying to ask me. Declined on the combo.
I got the Shinjuku Shadow without the spicy cheddar but as an after thought, maybe I should have. It comes with pickled daikon, green onions, furikake, umai teriyaki, bonito flakes & green onions. I don't think I saw furikake nor the teriyaki sauce so my hot dog felt a little dry and I likely was missing those ingredients. Since I'm also dairy free, no spicy cheddar on mine which, like I said, opted out on. The bratwurst was juicy and salty (expected). Overall, the hot dog felt a tad dry.
While waiting for my order, overheard the customer ahead of me compliment the bulgogi dog. Will have to try that one next time. Mine was ok. I think the bun was partially toasted, wasn't that cold nor stale. It was somewhat flavorful but I think, had I gotten it with the spicy cheddar, it would have been better. Ingredients are fresh though. My dog came out pretty quickly and the employee handing me my order was very nice. Packaging was good and it didn't jostle around in the box on the drive home.
I think this place has potential but they need to work on the customer service. Presentation was also good. Will have to come back to try other things on their menu.
