The 38 Best Restaurants in Omaha, Nebraska | Eater

"Umami is one of only a few spots in Omaha to offer an omakase experience. Sit at the sushi bar and New York transplant Keen Zheng, who left Manhattan and the Michelin-starred Sushi Nakazawa for a suburb of Omaha, may be the one making your food. The restaurant also serves a reliable menu of cooked Chinese and Thai dishes, as well as sushi rolls, nigiri, and sashimi for both dine in and takeout." - Sarah Baker Hansen

The 13 Hottest Restaurants in Omaha

"Housed in a former Omaha Pizza Hut, Umami is the pet project of Keen Zheng, a 32-year-old New York transplant who worked his way through a stint of high-profile restaurants, including Manhattan’s four-star Sushi Nakazawa, before settling in Nebraska. Here, Zheng executes classic sushi with dramatic presentation to a regularly packed house. Omakase is coming soon, but for now, expect a unique selection of original rolls and hibachi grilled dishes." - Sarah Baker Hansen

Honestly spectacular. Had been a long time since I had been here and I remembered it being good, but this was fantastic. The Out of Control and Snow White rolls were our favorites and very unique and well balanced. Perfect amount of rice (not too thick) and you could taste each element of the fish and other toppings. The coconut shrimp roll was nice but I wish I would have gone with the server's recommendation of the 1504 Bellevue as I was curious about the enokii mushrooms. The server Noah was very attentive, professional, and all around just seemed like a nice dude. Even looking around the restaurant, all of the servers seemed to be very attentive and had great attention to detail. The Skeleton Key was a solid cocktail. Environment was clean and classy. Looked like a nice New York sushi bar, where it apparently takes inspiration from. Take a minute to read the chef's bio! Will absolutely be back next time we're in town.

Good selection and flavor. Little bit out of the way of your from Omaha or even West Omaha but it was worth it. Really good prices and lunch specials.

An Unforgettable Omakase Experience at Umami Asian Cuisine in Bellevue, Nebraska 🇯🇵🍣! 😋 A few days ago, my family and I had the most incredible first-time omakase experience at a hidden gem of a Japanese restaurant in Bellevue—an experience we’ll treasure forever. We were celebrating my son’s graduation and wanted to do something truly special, and this absolutely exceeded all expectations. From the moment we walked in, we were warmly welcomed by Jay, one of the owners, who seated us with genuine hospitality and enthusiasm. Our master chef for the evening, Keen, was phenomenal—thoughtful, precise, and incredibly skilled in curating our culinary journey. As a family of four new to omakase, we weren’t sure what to expect, but every course felt like a work of art. The ingredients were top-tier—fresh, delicate, and full of flavor. Chef Keen introduced each dish, often naming the fish and sharing little insights, which made the whole experience even more engaging. With every bite, we truly felt like we were tasting the sea—our palates transported on an unforgettable voyage. The full experience lasted about two hours with many beautifully crafted courses, each one better than the last. I highly recommend this for anyone who loves sashimi, sushi, or simply appreciates fine dining with meaning and intention behind every dish. Important Tip: This is a very special dining experience, so reservations are a must. We went on a Friday afternoon around 5 PM, but for a more intimate experience, I’d recommend going at a quieter time. Be sure to call ahead and book in advance! This was more than just a meal—it was a celebration, a memory in the making. We left with full hearts, satisfied stomachs, and stories we’ll be retelling for years to come. Put this on your bucket list—you won’t regret it. I’m including a few pictures of beautiful sushi plates from other orders for your reference. We didn’t order those!

Google
The hype is real. I was travelling in town and craving sushi, but was a little weary to order it so far away from the ocean. Idk who supplies for these folks, but they managed to make some top-notch sushi in the landlocked Midwest. Would definitely go back next time I’m in town 🔥

I’ve been here a few times while I was pregnant last year and I came today to see if the food was as good as I thought it was and it did NOT disappoint. I love raw fish and this is probably the best place to get it from the salmon sashimi is 11/10. I had the soft shell crab, crab rangoons, and egg rolls for appetizer and it was a perfect amount for my sister and I (we are big backed). Sushi was good as always, and we both split the salmon flight which was scrumptious, and I also decided to try a lemon drop. It was pretty good so I ordered another one lol. For dessert we each got the mango mochi, 11/10. We’ve tried the matcha one and it was great we also tried the fried ice cream last year and it was so good but we were filled up from our food we settled with just the mochi this time. I forgot the name of our server but she was great! I couldn’t hate this place even if I tried.

Google
This place is a hidden gem. I’ve been to many omakase places in Japan, New York, San Francisco, Vegas, San Diego and Chicago. I rank this place as Top 3 in my book for Omakase. First, it’s not pretentious and overpriced. My entire Omakase experience was $125 for 18 dishes. Each nigiri is uniquely prepared. The best Saba (not over powered my curing too long with vinegar), best Uni with a fried seaweed underneath for texture. Every piece has a unique touch that complements the seafood without overpowering. For example, the scallops have a touch of yuzu salt on top. Call ahead to request omakase and no need to add more soy sauce as each one is seasoned by the chef.

Google
A favorite spot for Lunch and fresh Sashimi! The Blue Fin Tuna rocks your socks off! The dishes are prepared before your eyes and served with some flare! A must visit Resturaunt if you’re in the area. I highly recommend it!

Google
Umami is my favorite sushi restaurant in Nebraska along with Yoshitomo! I was always wondering why the fish is so fresh here, more so because it's been a challenge for me to find fresh fish in the landlocked state. Turns out the head chef and owner, Keanne (unsure about spelling, apologies) goes to airport twice a week to pick up all the ingredients sent directly from Japan. The price is absolutely beyond reasonable, especially if you order Sushi and Sashimi for Two. Nevertheless, I recommend sitting by the bar and do it omakase style, trying sushi piece by piece made by the head chef. Lovely place, humble and down to business, but just great quality fish. I am glad we have a good sushi restaurant in town.

Yelp
We ordered from Umami through a delivery service tonight. We've ordered from them before and thought the food was wonderful. But this time they surpassed themselves in service as well as in the tastiness of the food. My daughter has a gluten allergy that can affect the quality of her life a lot. The fact that you can indicate a gluten allergy on the order page is wonderful. But then, even better, the restaurant called us to let us know a couple of the items we had ordered could not be made gluten-free. Did we want to change them? And a couple of the dishes required components on the side in order to be GF. Did we want them to do that? When the food arrived, all gluten-free dishes were clearly labeled. It made my daughter so happy to see that. And then the food itself was superb. To have top-shelf, tasty food on top of a caring staff made this a superlative experience for us. Thank you, Umami. We appreciate you and thank you for your delicious food and excellent service. You will be our go-to restaurant when ordering online.

Yelp
Wow the yellow curry here is amazing. It was the right amount of spicy yet sweet from the coconut milk, and had a variety of vegetables in it. I ordered it with tofu which was great- not spongy at all. I got it delivered from uber eats, and it was prepared exactly on time as it said on the app. It came hot and with a side of rice, ready to eat!

Yelp
Not sure how I haven't reviewed Umami yet! In my opinion, this is by far the best sushi in Nebraska. It's actually the place that made me like sushi to begin with. I started out just eating the lo mein (which is AMAZING), graduated to a few simple rolls, and now I've eating several raw nigiri and trying the specials every time we go. Chef is the best, and always makes sure we're treated well at the sushi bar. Jay, the manager, knows us by name, and loves to suggest new options for us to try! There is not much to the aesthetic, but man the food is next level!! You have to go

Yelp
We love bento boxes during lunch! We'd order the chicken teriyaki bento box that comes with four sushi rolls, a side of fruit, rice, and I'm forgetting something else I'm sure. I liked their whiskey they let me sample called Umiki - the 'Whiskey Monster' website will call it having pine oak notes and having a licorice palate quality to it. Ambiance is calming.

Yelp
It's a good experience visiting here. Having a great sushi. It's looks very clean inside and kitchen. Good presentation on sushi. Deducted points on my server not washing hands before serving.

Yelp
The Omaha Sushi Project ventured out to Bellevue for Umami! Place had a great vibe and the service was pretty great too! We normally get a classic roll and two specials but their classics were not super exciting so we just got 3 specials and they were all decently priced! My sister liked them all but I truly felt like they all fell flat. My favorite was the 1504 Bellevue Roll because it was the most fun and interesting. The rest just didn't have enough flavor for me. Nothing wrong with the food just no wow factor for me. Follow along with the Omaha Sushi Project collection! Presentation - 2/5 Crunch - 2/5 (basic like Hyvee) Taste- 2.5/5 Variety of menu - 2/5 Price - $$

Yelp
Great place for sushi! We drove out to Bellevue just to try this place out and their sushi is on point. Good service and nice atmosphere. Will definitely be back.

Yelp
This restaurant was recommended by several people and I can see why! If you are a sushi lover, this is your restaurant. This will be my go-to sushi place from now on. AMBIANCE I really enjoyed the feeling of this restaurant. I had reservations for 5:30 and it only got busier as the night went on. It's clean, there is plenty of parking and it's easy to find. SERVICE The service was incredibly fast. Menus and waters were brought immediately and it only took about 10 mins after ordering to receive the food. The waiter was attentive and polite. FOOD Everything was great! Appetizers, soup, rolls and drinks. The thing I really loved was that their sushi rolls weren't cut big. They were smaller much more manageable sizes to eat. PRICE The price was very reasonable based on the quality of the food and the service provided. I would have expect to pay a little more to be honest.

Yelp
We ordered on line..TO GO....the fried rice was great and a huge portion for my friend.....I had the Bento lunch box special ..it was delicious and so much food' .....the won ton soup was hot and very yummy ..the fruit, (apples and banana) the salad(with dressing) , 4 piece sushi,(with ginger and wasabi) 2 pot stickers, steamed rice, teriyaki chicken ...all that in my Bento Box lunch special!! 2 meals for me! Maybe I will eat there next time when I'm not at work and have more time!!!

Yelp
This is one of my favorite sushi places in the Omaha/Bellevue area. The sushi is fresh and prepared well. The prices are reasonable. I love to get the sashimi lover entree with some hot and sour soup. If you live in Omaha, you won't regret the drive to Bellevue for this sushi. The service was great and fast. The place is often busy because it's a popular spot. It's great for a group or dinner with friends.

Yelp
This has been our go-to sushi for years now since they opened. I have never had a bad experience or bad food here. Their sushi is top notch, and rivals even the most popular local sushi restaurants. I always stick with my regular sushi combo, but I have also shared a sushi platter with my wife. My daughter always orders the chicken katsu (closest to chicken tenders) and she has never been disappointed either. The layout is nice with plenty of tv's for viewing games or whatever may be on. Servers have always been attentive and pay attention to your requests. Highly recommend, this is a jewel of a place tucked back in Bellevue and should be recognized as one of the top sushi places in all of Nebraska.

Kyra D.

Yelp
Best sushi place around. The fish is always incredibly fresh and the food comes out quickly. we tried the white tuna carpaccio and the Snow White roll (without mayo) tonight for the first time and we're probably going to get them every time we come here now. Sooo good.

Yelp
As usual, Umami for the win!! For this month's go with my Amex Gold Card Grubhub credit, I went with the Omaha Steak roll. It seems to be a play on Yoshitomo's wagyu roll, and they did a good job on it. It had good flavor and the steak was tender. I'll be looking for this one in August I presume! See you next month, Yelpers!

Kelley M.

Yelp
Two of the sushi rolls were terrible. They smelled , looked and tasted old and rotten. We told our server they did not taste right and we didn't like them and he didn't care. His service was not great. He was very pushy. He did not give us time to look at menu and was very quick to get us out of there. He didn't thank us for coming or anything. Made us seem like an inconvenience. The rest of our sushi rolls and crab Rangoon were good.
google avatar

Sister C.

Yelp
Some of the best hot & sour soup in town. I really like their chicken lo mien and my girlfriend really likes their sushi.
google avatar

Abel D.

Yelp
The food is great! They have really good waiters and chefs! The environment around us was looking good and clean! It's a great place to come to if you really badly want japenese food! I really recommend it!
google avatar

Jessica S.

Yelp
When you first walk in it has a comforting atmosphere with sushi chefs to the right, whipping it up and having fun while doing it! I forgot our waiters name, but he was very kind, and took caee of us 110%. We first ordered the Miso soup, and it was very comforting! You could tell it's authentic, and packed full of love and flavor. Now I'm not a seafood person whatsoever, but the sushi was so elegantly plated, and my fiancé enjoyed every bite of it! This has become one of our favorite sushi spots by far. It's worth the extra splurge at Umami to be treated like damn near royalty! I got the teriyaki chicken, with a side of fried rice. The rice was very moist, and very flavorful. The teriyaki sauce itself is decadent and unlike any other teriyaki I've had. It's a fun atmosphere, with serious deliciousness! If I could vote 100 stars I definitely would!
google avatar

Mike H.

Yelp
First, Umami is not one of those expensive, high end sushi restaurants that serve one piece for $5. This is a cozy, casual restaurant that is ALWAYS full and very welcoming. You may have a clerk at one table and the mayor at the next. And the food, the appetizers and sushi, tremendous. The fried calamari app is so crisp on the outside and tender inside, we get it every time. Edamame is overflowing in the bowls. Yakitori and the rest and always flavorful. We prefer the individual sushi pieces and they have a wide selection. Salmon, uni, eel, everything fresh and tight. We always end with the miso soup to settle everything. We're always full, and stay full. We're back every couple of weeks!
google avatar

Missy M.

Yelp
My husband and I were craving sushi. We actually made it a weekday lunch together. The restaurant was very cute, big, but seating was set up to have plenty of privacy. We each ordered the shrimp tempura bento box. We ordered a dynamite roll to share. Everything was delicious, just wish some were a bit warmer, came out room temp. We each got the ginger salad. The waiter was very friendly and gave suggestions.
google avatar

Jennifer T.

Yelp
Mercedes was an amazing server who guided us with our meal. We've gone here multiple times but it's always good to try other options. We had an assortment of sushi and sashimi, as well as the sushi lover (where chef picks and curates a mix of sushi for you - loved this !). Wagyu, toro, octopus app, aji fish app was interesting - they fry the fish and you pick at the head and fry bits. Great presentation ! Jalapeño roll wasn't our fav. But the toro (fatty tuna) and waygu was buttery goodness. Always a treat and at 6pm we were able to get the last booth. It was jamming tonight ! Chef's
google avatar

Andre S.

Yelp
Pretty solid sushi choice in the area! I've come by here a couple times with friends because I've heard good things. Its over in Bellevue and is worth a visit if you're craving sushi in the Omaha metropolitan area. I will say that the best part about this place compared to some similarly priced items is the portions and sushi to rice ratio of the nigiri. They don't skimp on the fish as much for sure. I really enjoyed the salmon flight out of all the things I've tried
google avatar

Jazzy S.

Yelp
We were so excited to try this sushi place after hearing the background of the head chef. It did not disappoint! Sushi was super fresh, probably the best in Omaha. Considering we are in Nebraska, this place deserves 5 stars. Service was great, very friendly. The atmosphere is kind of a basic and simple sushi place, but the food is amazing. - Garlic soy edamame (4/5): love the intense garlic flavor. Very savory and delicious - Sashimi and sushi for 2 (5/5): so fresh. I loved the fatty tuna the best. Salmon and medium fatty tuna were also amazing. They were almost melting in my mouth so good. The other sashimi were the white fish, mackerel, yellowtail, and others I can't recall. Everything was really good. The rolls were tasty as well. We love this place and will come back whenever in Omaha!
google avatar

Victoria W.

Yelp
Great food. Great service. Some of our family favorites are general tso's, sweet and sour chicken and all the rolls! Definitely recommend!!
google avatar

Jamie R.

Yelp
This is often listed as one of the best restaurants in Omaha for a reason. There's very few places you can order JUST a piece of fish and it's delicious. That tuna in the picture I posted? It had the same mouthfeel as better. I cannot say enough positive things about our waiter. We had DIVERSE needs. I love sushi, wife hates it, and dad needed something to pair with whiskey. He helped everyone at the table find something they liked. I am a critic of tipping culture in the US but I enthusiastically tipped above my normal threshold. The weirdest thing is the atmosphere! This location was clearly built as something else. Like a Pizza Hut or Sizzler maybe? It certainly is not modern but it is a top tier restaurant now. This just adds to the fun and mystique!

Tanya U.

Yelp
Great place to eat and fair prices. The rolls were a good size and overall tasted great! The staff were friendly, the music (jazz) was great too and they weren't too busy so we got our food quickly. We would come again but were from out of state.

Dennis M.

Yelp
Our second visit to this amazing place! The sushi was all perfectly fresh and the salmon belly melts in your mouth. The tempura apps came out crunchy and the sauce was perfect. We split the combo Lo Mein for the table as there was plenty. Our server was attentive courteous and accommodating. He even brought out a delicious tempura banana for our daughter as it was her 28th birthday. Not too noisy at all inside. Highly recommend visiting this wonderful gem in Bellevue!
google avatar

Cindy L.

Yelp
Went to Umami yesterday and was pleasantly surprised with the interior of the place and the food. The rolls that I got were delicious and made me wanting more. We also got some pork gyoza (not pictured). They were good, nothing too special! My bf got the steak and chicken hibachi. It tasted really good but the fried rice was more soggy than fried. The service was great! We had a new employee take our order and she was splendid. Always came around at the perfect time. I will say that this is one of the best sushi places that I've been to around in the area. Will definitely be going back!

Jennifer G.

Yelp
I saw this restaurant on my insta feed and decided to go on a whim and I am so happy that I did! I think it's one of the best sushi restaurants. I walked in, ambiance was chill and super clean. I was able to sit at the bar and watch my sushi being made. The service was awesome! I had the server choose my meal and he picked out some rolls that are most popular. Fish was super fresh! Talk about a gem in Bellevue! I'm already planning my return. Thank you for the excellent meal!
google avatar

Tiffany K.

Yelp
The restaurant itself smells super weird. It's like a musty, wet odor that they try to clean it but the smell itself will never go away. However, the sushi slaps so that's all I care about. Solid sushi joint that I like better than all the places in Omaha, and the parking situation is better. They have a huge lot.
google avatar

Abby W.

Yelp
Some of the best sushi I've ever ate. Got the 1504 Bellevue roll, rainbow roll, and super tempura roll. I also got the duo toro roll - incredible. Service was friendly and prompt. Water was always full and the servers were very helpful and knowledgeable about the menu. They gave great recommendations! For good sushi, I would pay a little bit more; Umami is worth it! Great ambiance for celebrations or just a yummy dinner.
google avatar

Barbi B.

Yelp
Huuuuge fan of this place! Neat and beautiful interior. I read about them in an Eater article about the best places to eat around Omaha. So I went for lunch with a few coworkers. The menu options are numerous and impressive. You could get curry, katsu, hibachi, sushi, and more! Really cool specials as well. Food came quickly, payment was fast and easy even though we all wanted separate checks. I ordered the 1504 Bellevue roll and it was creative, tasty, and filling! I also ordered the shrimp shumai steamed. I hope this becomes a regular lunch spot for me and coworkers!
google avatar

Grace L.

Yelp
This is the real deal!! Would have never imagined finding such an authentic down to earth sushi place in Nebraska! I just moved from San Francisco and thought I'd never be eating sushi here but I've finally found my place! They fly in fish and wasabi from japan. Their daily special menu is where you'll get the freshest items in season. Of course they have your standard rolls, bento boxes, and such as well. Great for families, not super fancy, trendy, or expensive. Love it and will be driving back down here often!

Douglas W.

Yelp
Excellent service even with a big crowd Ambiance- great, busy, noisy Food- Exceptional especially the 'Nasty Sushi'!
google avatar

Will S.

Yelp
Best mix of East Asian food in the Bellevue area. I ordered a mixture of takeout dishes and was not disappointed with anything. Very busy if dining in!
google avatar

Meshawn T.

Yelp
I came here one day wasn't sure about the place. The guy Jay works and takes orders. Was extremely nice, funny and friendly. He made me feel so welcomed. I ordered the shrimp and steak. The steak was extremely cooked to my liking. The crab Rangoon was pretty good. I like coming inside and watching the sushi guys make sushi. The place always has people at the tables. It's a nice restaurant.
google avatar

Kylee D.

Yelp
Great lunch prices. The sushi rolls were good. Also had gyozas, which were good. The service was fine. It was a little busy, but it seemed like they were keeping up with it. You can watch the guys make your rolls, so that is kind of cool. They had the football game on too, which was nice. I would definitely go here again.

Megan C.

Yelp
Best Egg drop soup ever!! Everything I have tried is delicious! I never pick the same thing!

Michele M.

Yelp
The food here is excellent - everything is always fresh and consistently delicious. We regularly enjoy their sushi, tofu hibachi grill, sesame chicken, veg tempura, their veg gyoza are amazing. Highly recommend!

Christine B.

Yelp
Unique and delicious rolls. Great prices and seriously amazing sushi. Lots of servers, so fast service.

Morgan T.

Yelp
Best meal we have had in a while! It was super busy but it was worth the wait!! Everything was amazing! Sushi was great and the hibachi was so good! Try the garlic edamame it was a 10/10!!

Sachiko P.

Yelp
Sushi was good and add salmon sashimi. also loves salmon don. I 'd like to going back.

Ryan L.

Yelp
Outstanding service; well prepared with attention to the finest detail sushi, and at a very reasonable price. Went for the first time to celebrate a birthday and will certainly be back soon.
google avatar

Kaitlin C.

Yelp
Umami doesn't take reservations for small parties but even if the place is packed they were so speedy to get us a table so don't be scared! So many options on the menu to choose from. Lots of vegetarian options as well. VERY friendly and helpful staff. This is a gem in Bellevue.

joel w.

Yelp
Had some excellent vegetable pad thai here today. The egg drop soup was quite good. Service was very good.
google avatar

Stephanie C.

Yelp
Favorite sushi place in Bellevue and the Omaha metro area. The quality of this place is such a gem to have especially in Bellevue! They have a wide range of choices from sushi to bento boxes! If it's your first time definitely get sushi! The chef is amazing and you can read all about him on the menu! Their Bento boxes are a great bargain if you want to try a bit of everything, but don't want big portions. Otherwise their dinner menu has large portion sizes! Their beef fried rice is one of our favorites. Also am a fan of their pad Thai! They have ample parking and also have restrooms available. Highly recommend getting an egg drop soup and crab Rangoon for appetizers!
google avatar

Chad W.

Yelp
I have to Umami is such a great surprise. Specially for in a random spot in Bellevue Ne. The sushi is absolutely amazing ! We don't go down to Bellevue very often but might have to start going more often. Ordered the Non stop hot tuna roll, jalapeño roll and the crispy yellowtail sashimi. All 3 were absolutely scrumptious! I also had a crispy salmon skin hand roll. It was perfect! I will absolutely be going back soon. Oh wait the shishito peppers are also a must
google avatar

Rick S.

Yelp
The food is top-notch, and the service is excellent! Seating is somewhat limited. I love that they have a nice variety of Asian cuisine for those that may have dietary sensitivities.
google avatar

Rita M.

Yelp
I love this place, I discovered it when I first moved to Bellevue. I was looking for some great Asian food and I read the reviews on Umami. Then I looked up the menu on their website and noticed they had a chef that had started out in New York and he has an impressive bio. I decided I had to try it and have been coming back ever since. This time I had the shrimp and steak hibachi. The steak was tender and cooked to perfection. The sauce was delicious, I loved the salad and soup that come with it as well. I plan to continue to go every time I return to try even more items on their menu. Service is always great and the food is always perfect. They have an excellent drink menu. From the outside it doesn't look impressive and the inside is not fancy but the food is great!
google avatar

Destiny E.

Yelp
I give it a 4.6 out of 5. It was very good. I got the chicken and steak, both cooked perfectly. I just wasn't a fan of the mustard sauce. But still, very good, and highly recommend.
