San Francisco’s New Restaurant Openings

"Umami Sushi is a spot that looks like it could be good for a casual weeknight dinner in Richmond. It offers nigiri, sashimi, rolls in the $15 range, and an eight-piece omakase service for $39, all in a space with a few bar seats and enough tables for a small group." - ricky rodriguez

Small and cute restaurant off the beaten path. The food is good and the service decent. It's not the best sushi I've had in town, but also a good option for this area. Decently priced with good servings. Give it a try if you are in the area!

We came here to grab our lunch for the Legion of honor exhibition. We came a little bit late and there are lunch hour was almost ending. However, the owner was super nice and very patient. We got the Chirashi rice! The fish was very big portion and it wasn’t that expensive. The quality was also pretty good. We also got one of the rolls, and it was well seasoned. Karaage was very fresh. It’s literally still steaming when it comes up. The interior also was very unique. I recommend this place.

Fresh and delicious. Authentic Japanese food delivered with the best service, it is a must to visit in San Francisco.

My wife and I live in the area. A friend told us we should try Umami Sushi. I’m glad we did. Our sushi rolls were very creative. I had a Saba Donburi. It was the best donburi I’ve ever had. Full of vegetables, seaweed, and perfectly cooked mackerel. We will be back.

A small establishment a short walk from the Legion of Honor museum. Attentive staff with a large variety of offerings and really fresh sushi. It may be small in size but big on taste.

Tried this newer place that opened up for sushi and their rolls were absolutely delicious! So much flavour and beautifully made. Service was lovely and their interior atmosphere was cozy but modern. Would come back to try their other rolls! Spent about $60 before tax.

Google
It was an incredible sushi experience! I opted for their Omakase Sashimi Kaisen Box, letting the chef curate a selection of the freshest seasonal fish. It was a delightful surprise! Every piece was melt-in-your-mouth perfection.

Highly recommends: Sake Nigiri 🍣 Tamago Nigiri Baked Golden Scallops Beef Donburi Miso Soup Mixed Tempura •Spacious and clean •Attentive staff •Welcoming atmosphere Sake Nigiri: A Delightful Culinary Experience 11/10 I recently had the pleasure of trying their sake nigiri, and it was nothing short of an extraordinary experience. So what sets this sake nigiri apart from Ebisu, Izumi Sushi, Yoshi and Sapporo? The freshness of the salmon was immediately evident; each piece melted in my mouth with a buttery smoothness that was simply divine. The flavor was both rich and delicate, capturing the perfect balance that defines high-quality nigiri. If you’re a fan of sushi and nigiri, this is the best place to go to. It promises an unforgettable dining experience that will leave you thoroughly satisfied and eager for your next visit.

Yelp
Our favorite sushi spot for the last year or so. Beats out the other Richmond and sunset spots by far. Consistently great quality fish, flavors, and service. They don't skimp on the size of the cuts. I love the real marinated wasabi (you have to order). Do yourself a favor, give it a try.

Yelp
You MUST get the amber jack jalapeno, no questions asked! O R D E R E D * Amber Jack Jalapeno * Pink Lady Roll * Toro Toro Roll * Omakase Sashimi Don [18 Piece] * Hamachi Nigiri V E R D I C T Richmond District has a few sushi spots, but Umami Sushi truly stands out--and here's why: Amber Jack Jalapeño (100/10!) This dish is an absolute showstopper. Perfectly sliced amber jack sashimi with their house sauce--I could order five plates of this and still crave more. The fish is firm, fresh, and cut just right--not too thick, not too thin. The balance of flavors? Unreal. If you come here, this is a must-order. 18-Piece Omakase Sashimi Don Served in a 9-square box, this dish is as beautiful as it is delicious. You get a generous variety of high-quality sashimi, and for $53, the portion is incredible. Compared to other spots that offer 8-piece nigiri omakase for the same price, this box gives you way more value. Plus, I noticed other tables were ordering it too, so you know it's a signature dish! Parking Tip: It's mostly residential parking, so finding a spot can be tricky. If you're lucky, you'll get one right in front or a block away, but if not, I recommend parking on Geary Street and walking a block down. If you're in the Richmond District and love fresh, high-quality sushi, Umami Sushi needs to be on your list. I'll definitely be back for that Amber Jack Jalapeño!

Yelp
What a cute gem we found near sea cliff! We had the pleasure of having dinner here after watching the sun set at china beach nearby. The cozy, intimate atmosphere was perfect to escape the cold outside. Our amazing waitress served us the following delicious dishes listed in our gallery:

Yelp
I'm always surprised this place isn't busier! Best sake sashimi I've had in the city--thick & buttery salmon. The roles are yummy too with kind staff and nice music (jazz covers of popular songs).

Yelp
Really good takeout! Ordered in a whim, fish was fresh and delicious. Tamago tasted fresh not out of a premade container (also not too sweet). Toro and toro roll was SO good. Bonus points for recyclable containers.

Yelp
You guys. This sushi was so fresh, so good, I truly enjoyed every roll. My top 2 were the umami and the king dragon!!! If you love salmon you have to try them. We also got the yuzu sake and it was good!

Yelp
Taking over Serendipity's space, Umami, with its much better name, opened April 2024. It's getting its sea legs and in doing so, it feels like they're skimping on ingredients in order to meet margins. Case in point, the mixed tempura. The vegetables lacked flavor and tasted from frozen yet the shrimp was fresh and crunchy though the dish overpriced at $14.59. The hamachi carpaccio ($16.95) was fresh and delicious but the delicate slices of hamachi were swamped by the texture of the sauce with a thick stickiness akin to BBQ sauce. That said, the sauce's smoky, complex flavor combined with a delicate, thin slice of jalapeño grew on me with every bite. Thinning out the sauce seems like a solution. Best plate was the toro toro roll ($17.59) with delicious toro, the crisp texture of oshinko, delicate avocado and the spike of house special wasabi. I loved it. Last, the negitoro roll ($10) had an unappetizing mushy texture and I couldn't decide whether the fish had seen one better day or was simply the style of being chopped into a mash, giving it an odd mouth feel. Umami is doing many things right with more ambiant, lower lighting and music that gives the space life. The quality of the fish is about average and doesn't compare to the pristine quality of its predecessor. I admire Umami's experimenting with flavors but they need to level up on the quality of the fish. It's good - but it won't become a destination in this competitive restaurant town. They rejected my request to sit at the sushi bar- a first- and aroused my suspicion. I sat in the dining area whose two other tables had just closed their checks and were leaving.

Yelp
Umami has breathed new life into this space! The nigiri is exquisite, and the rolls are creative and delicious. The gyoza is a perfect appetizer. A worthy successor to Serendipity, Umami is a must-visit for sushi enthusiasts. Fun new decor on the walls and outside. Want to also mention the extremely attentive, warm and kind service we received. Located in the central Richmond district of San Francisco.

Yelp
Really vegan friendly! Super affordable sushi that is really yummy and filling. The went is super nice and the vibes inside are great!

Yelp
Walked in on a tuesday at around 6:30pm during their soft opening month. Sake was 50% off! We both ended up getting the deluxe omakase chirashi ($48) and it was incredible!!! There was so much fish and for $48 I thought it was a good deal. Fatty tuna and the salmon were the highlights. Sad there was no uni on this one, but maybe next time they'll have it :) Fish was so fresh and I enjoyed it very much. We also got a couple of sake bottles to share - sayori nigori which was unfiltered and one that I've had before- very easy to drink. We also tried a yuzu one, which tasted like a limoncello or lemon drop- a bit too sweet for me! Only feedback is I would enlarge the font on the sake bottle menu because it was super hard to read. The service was great. Note the deluxe omakase chirashi does take about 30 minutes to make, but definitely worth the wait.

Hao Z.

Yelp
I got the chirashi don for takeout, and the fish was super fresh. The portions were also very generous. Will definitely try dine-in at some point

Yelp
Ambience is cool. For me it's like a quick date night spot but not like a "date night" spot, yaddidamean. Service is great - can't complain there. But I'm all about the food when it comes to restaurants and give no care for ambience and service. We got the omakase deluxe and it's the basic omakase rollout of hamachi (yellowtail), otoro (fatty tuna), sea bass, uni. Nothing wrong with the "basic" line up but damn was it disappointing. Each course didn't have that distinct identity and idk the science to "curing" it all but it all blended together. And I give fair warning because the price is classic SF omakase price when you could get the same elsewhere if not better and cheaper. Idk if my palette is just ruined because of Tekka Sashimi restaurant. I wouldn't go back for Omakase, but some places have specialties focused elsewhere so I'll give them that benefit of the doubt.

Yelp
This place is great! Loved the decoration and ambiance. Food and service were solid. I got the seaweed cucumber salad, which was a 5 out of 5. Also got the Fuji mountain roll which was delicious!

Yelp
Visited their soft opening and enjoyed all the dishes we ordered as a family! The fish cuts were very fresh and would recommend the Pink Lady roll for sure and get their handrolls with salmon as they are packed with thick cuts. The miso sake kama was also flavorful and nicely grilled! This place was pretty busy during dinner so I see that many locals will be stopping by. They place nice jazz music, so it's a nice space for family or casual date night.

Yelp
We had the below and would recommend both: 1.) Chirashi don (chef's choice assorted raw fish, seaweed salad, tamagoyaki/egg all on top of vinegar seasoned rice) and 2.) Wagyu beef tataki (super tender and marbled seared beef with micro greens, scallions, and tataki sauce) Ambiance is great for casual hangouts, dates, and family gatherings. The staff was attentive.

Yelp
Just gorgeous fresh sashimi. We got the Kaiseki Sashimi (chef's choice) - which is a bit of a luxury for us - but it was full of luxurious fish. Salmon belly in miso sauce, UNI - very generous portion. Lovely seafood combination scallop, ikura, ahi and a slightly sweet soy-based sauce, perfect hamachi belly, and so much more. All great. But the perfect uni which is my husband's favorite was the best. When it's good it's just so special - and this was (when uni isn't good it is disgusting). Pleasant service, nice room (not fancy but beautiful clean modern room that isn't too loud). We also had the chicken udon soup which had clear true flavors and was mild (as it's supposed to be) but it was weird to eat homey cozy soup after super fancy rich sashimi. Just about perfect. We went there on a whim as we were walking past. It's outstanding.

Yelp
So so so good. Had the baked sushi and umami rolls. Both were absolutely delicious. The service is very kind and fast, and the ambiance is calm and friendly. Also very well priced.

Yelp
umami sushi was SOO good! great quality of fish, service, and vibes! i would easily say this restaurant is now one of my favorite sushi spots in sf

Yelp
AMAZING! The food was great, with a reasonable price range. Favorites included the Giants Roll and Daily Special sashimi. The service was nice, and we even got dessert on the house. The ambiance was quiet and smooth jazz music played in the background. We were already picking out the things we want to try next time!

Yelp
Really good sushi and generous portions. I'm glad to have a good sushi spot in the neighborhood.
google avatar

Yelp
I think the pricing is pretty fair here, but the sushi is not the greatest quality honestly. I ordered the deluxe chirashi box and the food felt like it was almost not done defrosting. The uni that I got with it was definitely not fresh either. Service was great though. And the interior is nice. I think this place has a lot of potential.

Yelp
The photos looked good and I really wanted to love this place. It's new and I want to see new restaurants thrive! However this place did not really meet expectations - I'd give it 3/5 but I'm giving this a 4 and giving them the benefit of the doubt since they just opened and hoping they will work out the kinks. I'll try again in a few weeks and revisit my review. First, I thought the value and pricing was really really good, which is why I wanted to like this place so much. But the food fell a little bit short. Not bad, but not great yet. I got the hamachi carpaccio and two hand rolls delivered. The hamachi had a really nice sauce and was presented beautifully with micro greens and flowers, but the smell was a little bit fishy which meant the sashimi was not the freshest it could have been. The advertised "hand rolls" were not hand rolls - they were maki rolls sliced into 6 pieces. I was really looking forward to a hand roll but was disappointed when I saw it was not. The flavors were OK though. Finally, the miso soup was super bland and watery, almost zero flavor. The meal filled me up so it was a good value, but quality was lacking. Again, I'll give it the benefit of the doubt since they just opened. Looking forward to trying again in a few weeks to see if they have improved.

Yelp
Great lunch on Sunday afternoon. Pretty quiet, a table left after we arrived leaving us alone with staff - lovely space, sat at the window. Attentive service, loved everything nigiri chef special, the rolls, & curry fabulous, beautiful portions - they didn't skimp on anything. Great neighborhood spot!

Yelp
Umami, New sushi joint that just opened and replaced the shuttered Serendipity. I was recently in the neighborhood and decided to give it a try, I was pleasantly surprised with the charming and intimate decor, and friendly service, but I was more impressed with the selection of fresh sashimi and specialty rolls and sake selection. I tried the Charashi bowl, and the fish was very fresh and the sushi rice was on point, making a well balanced flavor of acidity and flavor profile. I typically am quite picky when it comes to sashimi, but I have a good feeling about Umami folks, I feel they are the real deal and will likely be well received in the community, keep up good start and welcome to the neighborhood!

Yelp
Me and my boyfriend stopped by this place after going to bakers beach, right after a giants game. The food, service and ambiance was AMAZING!!! Ricky our server suggested a strawberry sake (I am not a fan of sake) and it was so good I bought one to go! I highly recommend stopping by and trying their delicious miso soup and green dragon rolls! I am a huge sushi fan but am always underwhelmed by the quality. The fish here is very fresh, and tastes like it came out of the ocean just minutes before. The servers were amazing and I will 100% be coming back! Thank you Ricky for an amazing experience and to the chef, you made the best sushi I have had in a long time! I would go so far as to compare their green dragon roll to nobu's! Very fairly priced for the quality. This will be our stop now every time we come in to the city! Wish I could give them more than 5 stars!

Carherine L.

Yelp
Excellent food and friendly service. We started with the mixed tempura which was large with carrots, potatoes, onion and eggplant. Then we did the omakase plus three specialty rolls. Loved it all except for the King Kong roll which was meh. Will definitely go back. Metal chairs are freezing, though, so perhaps bring a stadium seat pad in honor of your favorite team.

I would rate food 4.5/5. environment 4/5 price and amount of food 5/5

Yelp
We went here for dinner with a group of 7 and were blown away. The food and the vibes were amazing and the server was doing the most. We got the salmon carpaccio, the super 49ers roll and the beef udon and loved them all. I wish we had taken photos but we ate too fast. Highly recommend!

Yelp
Has to be one of my favorite sushi places ever. My boyfriend hates sushi but I made him come here and now he is obsessed. Also, get the lion king roll!!

Jacob R.

Yelp
This place is absolutely fantastic. I've had my eye on this spot for quite some time, and after seeing continuous glowing reviews, I knew I had to give it a try. Man, I wish I had done so sooner. Their fish is incredibly fresh. I love sushi, and there's nothing I hate more than a place that can't deliver on quality. And, well, it's safe to say that Umami's fish quality blew me away. I tried the Chirashi Don (to-go) and every piece of fish was delicious. All of their sashimi was thick, fresh, and melted in my mouth. They even put fresh wasabi on the tuna, which made it even better. I can't even decide on a favorite piece because it all was that good. I usually am not a fan of tamago & I even liked that! I can't wait to go in and try even more of their offerings. It's a small spot, but it has a very nice and ambiance and the workers were all very kind and talkative. You need to try this place!

Iz I.

Yelp
The sushi quality and portions are very good! Service is also excellent, and prices are reasonable.

Yelp
There are several sushi restaurants in this neighborhood but this one is hands down the best! The food is beautifully presented, high quality, and the service is extra friendly. What a great addition to the Richmond. We will be coming back!

Yelp
After reading all of the reviews on Yelp, we came here. The service was friendly and prompt. The interior was clean and the dining room had this relaxing jazz music playing the entire time. We got some rolls and the omakase deluxe Chirashi don. The chirashi don was a lot of food! There was tuna, salmon, tamago, scallop, shrimp, toro etc. I thought everything was ok, great price and great value for the quantity. I think the quality is not as good as it can be? Some of it tasted a little fishy to me, and the preparation of the fish especially the cutting of the fish is not as well done as some of the other sushi places. Some of the fish were sliced really unevenly and I was surprised that no fresh wasabi was used. A few pieces of the fish were also cut in a way that the sinew was still there, which was not great. But overall, I think if you want a major bang for the buck, this is a good sushi place. If you are willing to have less quantity, I think you can get better quality and preparation at some of the other places.

Yelp
This is a cute intimate spot we found randomly in the city. Our server was working solo and KILLED IT! She made sure we were taken care of and was so patient and kind. Everything we ordered was amazing and PRIME rolls are like 15 bucks! Would recommend

Carlee B.

Yelp
Great little spot -- our server was so busy and still did a phenomenal job. Melt in your mouth tataki, amazing rolls, and phenomenal potstickers. Would absolutely come here again, and highly recommend!!

Harrison C.

Yelp
This new opening sushi place is amazing. They serve fresh sashimi and delicious sushi rolls. The hamachi is rhetorical best I've had in SF.

Michael E.

Yelp
Small place with exceptional food and quality service. Highly recommend & will be a regular here.

Enrique L.

Yelp
The food already on the high end the tea must be complimentary . Most restaurants Japanese and Chinese tea normally complimentary.

Patty S.

Yelp
Oh my!!! So yummy. Only 8 reviews had me worried. Place was busy and our waiter was great! Sashimi and everything else melted in your mouth. Will definitely come back if we ever travel this way again.

Juliette W.

Yelp
We have ordered take-out twice now from Umami and it's excellent! Things we'd recommend especially: the wagyu beef roll, Cherry Blossom roll, 49er, and King Dragon roll. If you live in the neighborhood definitely give it a try ! In person or take- out. The staff are very nice, and they package things well. We've gotten the Mochi ice cream to finish our meals for fun and also recommend . We plan on ordering from them regularly.

Nicolas O.

Yelp
Absolutely amazing food, server recommended great choices, and very clean and organized all around. Everything was awesome, they just opened about a week ago and were referred by a local. Great spot, 10/10.

Rager G.

Yelp
10/10!!! We were recommended Umami sushi by a man in a perfume shop in Castro, so we thought to give them a try. The waitress told me they were doing a soft opening which was apparent when we sat down and were the only people in the restaurant. The service was great, server was very kind but the food did take a quite some time to come out considering we were the only ones dining. The food was fantastic, everything we had was great, not one complaint whatsoever. The ambience in the restaurant was great despite its small size and they were playing smooth jazz. Overall this place was great, definitely would come back when in the area! Best wishes to them and hope they succeed as a business!
