Umi Fine Japanese & Asian Cuisine

Came to Umi Japanese food on a visit while out of town for work. I ordered the rice cakes seafood platter and it was very interesting to eat I suggest you try it more as an appetizer. Good food friendly service definitely worth a try thank you for a pleasant evening.

This is a busy great place for Japanese food. Set in a strip mall, right off the highway,near several hotels. The staff and owners are super nice, friendly and accommodating. The menu is large but not overwhelming. There were 3 chefs behind the sushi bar -each making eye-appealing creations. We went for lunch, as we perused the menu and the blackboard full of specials we were served water and ordered a Scorpion bowl and the best lychee martini. I ordered the appetizer of Uni topped with quail eggs that was just received from Japan and the tuna tartare for my meal. My husband ordered the volcano roll. Oh-so good! The Uni was so fresh and sweet. My tuna tartare was big enough for 2-3 servings. The tuna was fresh with creamy avocados over seaweed salad. Topped with tobiko/ikura and crunchy tempura flakes. It was sweet, salty, a little spicy,smooth & crunchy all at the same time. Excellent. The volcano roll was enough for 2-3 people also. It was a spicy salmon roll topped with scallops, spicy tuna, & crab stick (among other food item) in a delicious sauce. So good. To say the least we went home with left overs. The staff checked in with us several times to see if everything was to our liking. We love this restaurant-great place, good atmosphere. We would recommend this place to all sushi lovers. And we definitely will be back.

Umi Fine has a large menu of traditional Japanese, Korean and many Sushi and Sashimi options. They feature Waygo beef and Toro tuna both as stand alone mains and in several rolls. The restaurant is in a strip mall alongside 128 and easy to get to if you trust the GPS.

Wow. Amazing. Everything we ordered was wonderful. Highly recommend the BLACK COD KASUZUKE. Flakey, flavorful. So good we ordered the plate twice. We sat at the bar and Jeremy was so wonderful! Really helpful, knowledgeable and friendly. 10/10 we will be back.

Very fresh and delicious sushi! Highly recommend trying the Jalapopper — it’s amazing and full of flavor.The owner is incredibly kind and truly cares about making every customer happy. Definitely a place I’ll come back to!

Best place to get Japanese wagyu on fire, and the sushi here is so fresh. I've had wagyu at many other places and this one by far is the absolute best. Besides, cooking it on a hot stone or whatever that thing is called is extra fun and extra cool. My boyfriend and I would order a bunch of sushi and then at the end split the beef bibambap served in a hot stone bowl. Best Japanese food ever.

Walk in and you feel special with beautiful folded napkins and chopsticks. Loved the delicious food and cold beer. Loved my general gao’s. Beef skewers had lots of flavor. Tempura was so good too. It was very nice meeting the chief and fun waiter.

Fine Japanese and Umi definitely dont go together. Guys please add a little more meat/protein to your dishes at least.

Sushi here has regularly been very good, but finally had the chance to splurge a bit on the Chef's Omakase (pictured) and it was great! Combined with a friendly staff and a casual dining environment and it is consistently a good experience; whether you're going for a low-key dinner with the kids or a nicer splurge.

I was in the Waltham area and wanted sushi, so I had to check this place out. Plenty of strip mall parking. The shop is in a shopping center off of 95. I picked up a deluxe sushi pkg. A bit pricey but tasted fresh and I loved it. I ended up taking it to my hotel, so I didn't get the whole waitress experience. I'll be back!

Sushi! Sushi! Sushi! And more! Had dinner here for the first time and was very impressed with the variety of dishes. The restaurant is super nice with modern decor and it's tucked away inside a small shopping plaza. My bf and I came here Sunday night for dinner and it wasn't too crowded. They have a nice bar and tons of cocktails to choose from. I decided to get sushi and my bf got the katchu chicken plate and we shared fried veggie tempura. Everything was very good. I really liked my roll because every sushi piece had a different yummy topping and the jalapeno was nice and spicy. My bf enjoyed his katchu and refused to share his plate! Haha. The fried tempura was cooked perfectly and the veggies were huge and tasted fresh. We really enjoyed our dinner and the ambiance. Next time we are craving asian fusion we will think of this place.

Over the last couple years, Umi has become our family's favorite restaurant. We come here at least once a month, if not more often, and we've celebrated several special occasions here. The restaurant itself is always really clean with a very fun, upbeat vibe. Tonight (a Thursday) the restaurant was very busy - with group dinners, people at the bar, but even on a busy night, we've never had to wait for a table. They also have a couple cute tatami-style tables by the windows. The owner and employees are all very friendly, generous, and attentive. The portions are large and come out piping hot. The alcoholic beverages are very strong and tasty, and the sushi is so good. We've enjoyed everything we've had -- the appetizers, the ramen bowls, the eggplant, Chinese style dishes, the Japanese dishes, including the lunch bentos, and the pad thai. It's all really delicious. Highly recommend!

I have visited this spot several times. Sushi never disappoints. I am always amazed that on a weeknight, it is full. I suppose it is a good sign that 90% of the patrons are Asian. I posted a picture of chef's choice sashimi. Super fresh and extra large cuts of sushi. This is always my go to place.

I stopped in at Umi for dinner during a work trip in the area last week. I ordered two maki rolls via DoorDash and picked it up. When I arrived my order wasn't ready yet so I had a chance to sit and look around. They were pretty busy for a Wednesday night. The servers seemed to be attentive and the customers seem to all be enjoying their food. The place is on the small size but it's nicely decorated and feels very cozy inside. Once I got back to my room I was able to taste my food. My rolls were okay. I've definitely had better but in a pinch I would probably try their location again.

Umi was conveniently located, right off the highway, as we were to meet someone just after they opened at Noon. Its modest exterior belies a contemporary and attractive interior. Since we were the first customers, of the day, we were invited to seat where we wished. We ordered Scallion Pancakes, Lo Mein and two Udon with Chicken and soba noodles. * The Scallion Pancakes were very good, hot and crispy, the best dish we ordered. * The Lo Mein was fair, a little dry, and it could have been warmer. The chicken was good but salty. * The Udon was passable, but we wouldn't order this again. The soba noodles were tasty and had a nice consistency, but we disliked the red kamaboko (flat fish "cakes") which were unfortunately abundant, and both diners who ordered the Udon commented that the chicken was bland and very tough. Service was excellent throughout the meal, though there were only two tables in use at this quiet time. Would we return here? We would, but we would try different dishes and hope for a better result.

Long time customer. 10/22/24 spicy salmon roll was bland - no flavor, no spice. It's been better in the past - new person prepping for lunch?

Wow... I took my mother here for a day early Mother's Day dinner and had a great time. The sushi was well prepared. I ordered omakase for the two of us and everything was great, taking the presentation to the nines, which I had to ask them to bring down some, as I don't need to have edible foil on all of my dishes! I look forward to returning and trying even more fish.

Crab. Rangoon and Gyoza were perfectly prepared. Hawaii and Phoenix Maki rolls were both really delicious. Service was prompt and friendly. A full bar, special martinis and drinks and some decent wines. The location is a little weird; don't be concerned - go right in and enjoy.

Had dinner at Umi on a quiet mid week night. Being used to sushi in LA, I asked for omakase, assuming, its a chance for chefs to show off their skills and ingredients without cost restrictions. Instead, "omakase" is a menu item (for $100./per person. It's a set series of dishes without taking advantage of each chef's individuality. All the fish was very dry, indicative of being previously frozen. Each offering was oxersauced, again to hide the lack of each fish's unique taste. The key to great sushi is great rice. The rice across the board was very dry and tasteless. There was no interaction with the chef's as they were just following a script (recipe). My local hosts enjoyed the dinner but I was unsurprisingly disappointed in the entire experience

Yes I did go here two days in a row. Stop looking at me like that. Upon walking in day two I did get recognized and it was hilarity. UMI is absolutely deserving of the 2nd trip in two days to try new things! Not only is everyone there friendly, the establishment itself clean and pretty, brown rice is an option for all their sushi, but THEY HAVE PLUM WINE! As someone who's very easy to give up their love for plum wine and sushi with brown rice this place is winner for me. Their Fuji Maki is good enough to bathe in. You'd defeat the purpose as you wouldn't get clean, per se, but it would have been worth it. If you're anything like me (and you may not be as I'm quite unique and weird), get the Fuji Maki with brown rice, a glass of Plum Wine, and sit next to the fish so you can play hide-and-seek with the puffer.

Umi is a nice Japanese restaurant tucked away in a little plaza off Route 128. Blink and you will miss it. They have a very nice ambiance, friendly service and delicious food. They seem to have a lot of regulars who eat there. The dining area is nice and they have bar seating as well. It is not a big restaurant so I could see it getting filled on a busy night. We got seated for two no problem but by the time we finished an early dinner there were more diners pulling up. There is plenty of parking available.

Fresh, high quality fish, in a pleasant setting, served quickly - the perfect spot for a weekday lunch break! I personally love the spicy maki lunch combo. It comes with salad and miso soup for under $20.

Food was extremely high quality and prices very reasonable. Great location near many hotels. I highly recommend this establishment. You will not leave hungry!

It is a mediocre Japanese restaurant; I enjoy the Udon soup, Nabeyaki with seafood even though the frozen mussels look pale.

Stopped in for lunch on a Thursday with coworkers. Two of us ordered the sashimi lunch combo while one of us got the chicken ramen. A special roll was ordered as an app for all of us. The sushi roll and sashimi were on point. The chicken ramen was not well received. The chicken was described as rubbery while the soup was better at home than here. There was a complimentary scoop of ice cream with whipped cream. I liked everything I had. I would come back here again. We arrived about 11:45am and left close to 1pm. The place was packed when we left. We didn't have a reservation. The place has about a dozen tables of varying sizes.

Got delivery, expensive like crazy, probably the finest delivery packaging I've ever had. Tasty food.

First of all, the service was good. I sat outside and the waitress never forgot me. However the food was left to be desired. House salad was ok. The dressing was only on the top and didn't reach the second layer of the lettuce. Agedashi tofu surface wasn't one bit crispy and the sauce was wrong and there were no Bonita flakes. Bulgogi beef with onions was simply very thin slices of beef marinated lightly with soy sauce and sugar, far from the marinating sauce for true bulgogi. You can just tell from the light color of the beef among so much onions in the plate. Maybe the specialty of this place is sushi which I didn't try at all.

UMI has a huge variety of Asian food, ranging from various appetizers, sushi and classic and fancier maki rolls, and Chinese, Japanese, and Korean hot entrees. There's something for everyone! I had UMI's food in group orders earlier this year and again recently once I returned to MA, and I highly recommend getting takeout from UMI! (I dined in the restaurant around a year ago, and it was a really nice experience that sadly isn't available now.) Some of their dishes I particularly like are the torched spicy crispy maki, the dried cooked string beans, and the UMI style wings. I love the torched tuna on top of the roll, the string beans are super well cooked and very flavorful, and the wings have an amazing garlic chili seasoning! We usually get a mix of appetizers, hot food, and sushi, which is great for people with different preferences. Most recently, we had the sushi deluxe, string beans, wings, the torched spicy crispy maki, and General Gao's chicken, and all of it was great! The fish was really fresh (especially the salmon nigiri, which had a more buttery texture than I remembered). I actually think the fish quality improved from a few months ago! I didn't take a photo this time, but the food was all packaged well and stayed fresh during the drive. Overall, I'd recommend UMI for consistently tasty food and good variety!

In the times of COVID, Umi only allows take-out/delivery. I ordered the Palace and New Wave Rolls which took some time to come out. I think the rolls would have tasted better if I dined in, but I understand. Typically, when the prices are a little above average, I'm skeptical. Umi surprised me because the rolls don't look like the usual rolls and it also came with a decent amount and tasted decent as well! I hope to be back to dine in someday.

Great sushi and Japanese food, nice ambiance, excellent service. We've been there a number of times and always good. But it's not a real stand out in terms of the food.

This might be my GO TO sushi spot, and that is saying A LOT because I eat sushi about once a week. I can't believe I took so much time to try this for the first time! I had it twice in the space of a week or so and both times everything was fabulous. I especially liked the Phoenix maki with the jalapeño on top. I also tried the torched double toro maki and torched spicy crispy maki. The fish was fresh and delicious. My boyfriend tried the udon noodles with chicken and he really enjoyed that as well. The noodles were cooked well and there was plenty of chicken and vegetables. Finally, the other star of both meals was the scallion pancakes. I am a huge fan of them, and I'm consistently disappointed but these were AMAZING. Crispy and crunchy on the outside, soft and chewy on the inside, full of flavor, and a yummy soy sauce on the side. These are also the first scallion pancakes I think I've ever had that taste great re-heated (toaster oven). Think I might go have a couple now.... I also got the food delivered both times. The first time it was super fast. The second time took a little longer but it wasn't late. Everything arrived fresh and delicious. I think it's a great takeout option!

Ordered take out during the quarantine/pandemic and would definitely order again. Everything was securely packaged and ordering online was smooth. I was definitely craving a mix of hot food and sushi and for about $50 I ordered the Sampler, spicy tuna maki, salmon avocado maki, spicy yellowtail maki, and the General Gaos chicken with White Rice and a Miso Soup. More than enough food with plenty of leftovers.

It's good, but I wouldn't go so far as to say fine. It is an interesting concept, in that it's pan-Asian cuisine. They of course have sushi and teriyaki, but they also have fried rice and Korean-styled dishes. Most sushi dinners come with salad (ginger-based dressing) and miso soup. The sushi grade fish is fresh. Took a large party of coworkers there, they can accommodate groups. It is a bit on the high end in terms of prices, $50 per person with drinks and apps in our group. I had the chirashi bowl, it came with 12 pieces of sashimi for $27. Minimal beer menu, mostly cocktails. Plenty of parking. Very nice employees.

I only review Chinese-American food (or American Chinese, if you prefer) based on one dish, and one dish alone, which is the greatest dish in the pantheon of Chinese-American awesomeness: General Tso's Chicken (Spelled however you want--here they call it General Gau's Chicken--but I guarantee you are actually pronouncing it wrong, Silly Rabbit.) As for Umi's version, I ordered it via GrubHub ($14.50, not counting fees), which is on the expensive side compared to the $11.75-12.95 other local restaurants charge (for a small small serving). It arrived in under 1 hour and was still hot. The batter was on the heavy side, and less crispy than I prefer, which is perhaps a side effect of delivery. The sauce was fairly thick, and some thickened, almost cooked on sauce adhered to the chicken pieces, which was unusual. Not too sweet, but excitingly, it was actually on the spicier side, unlike most GT's Chicken. Call it 4 on a 10 point hotness scale. Extra credit for that. Came without rice, and served with some crunchy broccoli florets. As far as the chicken, it was very fatty and wasn't of high quality. It also had a lot of stringy, over-cooked edges under the breading. Frankly, if it wasn't for the spice level, I'd say this was competing for the worst GT's Chicken I've ever had. The serving size was also on the small side compared to the amount that most restaurants serve, which usually can barely fit into the container. Sorry Umi, but the General would probably have had you arrested for this. Also ordered Gyoza ($6.95), Crab Rangoon ($7.95) and a California Roll ($6.95), all of which were fine. I hear good things about the sushi here, but as far as General Tso's Chicken, there is much better around Waltham.

Came here on a Friday night and ordered the Umi Love Boat (for two) and the Avocado Ball with my boyfriend. The salmon tasted good, and I liked the spicy tuna roll. The Avocado Ball was okay...Good service though. But overall, a lot of our food seemed to have a sort of bad "fishy" smell and taste to it. I know right-we're eating fish...but I don't know about you, I would rather not be hesitant of whether or not I should eat my food in case I get sick. Every time we get sushi for dinner on date night, I always end up not eating a ton during the day so I can eat a lot of sushi during dinner. But the smell and taste threw away my appetite and we left disappointed.

Went with a co-worker for dinner. Had a blast. Enjoyed some sake and sushi. The rolls were fresh and delicious. When I am back in town I will definitely comeback for a visit.

We have eaten here twice so far, both times we got takeout. The first time we got a combination of different sushi rolls and they were all very good and fresh! The most recent time we went, we ordered the salmon and chicken lunch bento box and even though it was tasty, they forgot to give the both of us rice and I felt that $15 was a bit pricey for what we got. Overall though we enjoy their food and will continue to come here for sushi.

You won't be disappointed with either Japanese or Chinese options here. I don't try the Korean dishes,, but will next time! Details: Traveling for business and wanted a rice based meal. Came across Umi. Went inside and it was bustling on a Monday with local diners. In looking over their menu, they have an expansive Sushi menu, a set of core "classic" Chinese-American dishes, and some Korean dishes sprinkled in. Generally don't mix and match, but I took a flier. I ordered two specialty rolls and a spicy tuna roll. Grabbed an order of fried rice as well for carry-out. All were really very good, which always surprises me with a mixed menu spot. I'd put the place up there with some of the better, recommended, takeout and dine in places in NYC, SFO, or LA. Couldn't finish all the meal, but the rolls were well composed, and fresh, and the fried (chicken) rice was generous, and had a very good and clean flavor profile without being cooked at too high a temperature. I'm a fan! and am so very pleasantly surprised by a place that executes in different cuisines so well!

Since the pandemic is not over, outdoor seating was a big plus, and service was fine even though we were the only people outside. Ordered a combo sushi and a lobster roll. Both were fine, I liked the different colors of roe on the roll.

Delicious and fresh. Pleasant and helpful staff. It's our go-to place for Japanese dining and sushi.

We had UMI delivered and it was a mixed bag. The pork katsu was amazing... great quality pork perfectly fried and it was quite a large portion. I could have used a bit more gravy but it was excellent. My son got the pork katsu curry and loved it! Amazing so far. But the rest of the meal was not up to that standard. The salad dressing was flat. The crab Rangoon wasn't very flavorful although cooked perfectly. And the age dashi tofu, my absolute favorite, needed way more flavor. I was really surprised given the quality of the katsu. I would order again, maybe different appetizers, but more flavor, please.

Great little Asian fusion place tucked away in a strip mall near Waltham's hotels. Well worth a visit.

Super sleek and modern restaurant with really quick and good service! Came here for a nice dinner, and I definitely got that. The food my group ordered was calamari, seafood salad, chicken ramen, miami roll, and salmon avocado roll. All of the food was delicious. The calamari was super tasty with really good seasoning. If you are looking to order sushi, I would definitely recommend the Miami Roll as it looks beautiful and tastes just as good as well. Personally, I didn't think the salmon avocado roll didn't taste that great because the some of the salmon in it was not good. In general, I am very happy I found this restaurant near me, and am definitely looking to go back!

This has been the worst human service I've ever experienced in Boston. Stars?!? You get zero starts for been so disrespectful to a guest. This message is for the waiter and his team who, with great disrespect, denied me service just because they wanted to close early. According to the restaurant, their schedules on Saturdays close at 10:30 on Saturdays and I arrived at 8:15 The vulgar way of denying me service, being that they are still open, leaves much to be desire.The host would have respectfully explained that they already wanted to leave and I would have understood, but what he did was speak to another employee in his language and they were both so angry that they almost threw me the menu on the face. It was so uncomfortable that heir action was so hurtful that I told them, it is obvious that they are not interested in serving me and it will be better to look for another restaurant than in fact there are many. I'll never come back!

While living in this general area for many, many years I had never been to UMI Fine until last evening. The reason is that I have had go to sushi places and Asian cuisine places that I have been very happy with. However, just as we all are getting a little stir crazy working from home and staying inside during this pandemic, we were getting a little tired of the same old, same old. So, it was time to branch out and try something new. What a find!! The sushi and sashimi (tuna and salmon) were the freshest and best I have had in years....yes years. The size of the cuts were larger than most other places, the presentation even for take out service was second to none, and the taste was exceptional and the melt on your tongue like butter analogy was created for this presentation. With a shellfish allergy I need to be extra cautious so not to have any cross contamination with any other seafood, and UMI Fine didn't disappoint.....I mean, I survived to write this review, right? In addition to the sushi, we also ordered pan fried dumplings and the treat of General Gau's chicken. Both were delicious. I was also surprised with the gratuitous miso soup to accompany the takeout order. Oh and another thing, the ginger was the freshest I have had with a sushi/sashimi meal; great coloring, a slight crunch of freshness, and wonderful flavor. The only negative about UMI fine is the location. While just off I95 at the Winter Street exit, if you are not familiar with the labyrinth of lanes, traffic lights, and switchbacks, navigating the correct path to the gem can be trying particularly during rush hour. But, once you find your way, it is well worth the trek. Well done UMI Fine, well done, indeed. We will be back, soon. Thank you!!

We have been coming here for years because the food is always good. I recommend you eat at the restaurant because whenever we order pick OR delivery they mess up the order. HOWEVER, they are so nice about it and have always been understanding unlike other establishments. Always good quality fish too. We also got the udon noodles but they are not pictured.

Whether dining in or doing a DoorDash, one can expect fast fresh and creative combinations from Umi. The deep list of creative sushi maki rolls surpasses the standbys of spider and Philly rolls. Prefer individual pieces? Try the hard to find Uni (sea urchin). The bi bim bab selection offers a great change if you'd like to move yo the Korean Peninsula and still have fresh healthy seafood. The avocado ball will delight your taste buds. If that isn't enough, meals are prepared quite quickly and the portions are generous without being over the top.
