After seeing an Instagram Reel, my mom said she wanted to try Umi Hotpot, Sushi & Seafood the next time she was in Austin, so we made the drive to Round Rock to check it out.
The IG video was pretty spot-on: the decor is modern and clean, and the food displays are neat and well-maintained. But when we arrived, we noticed a lot of empty buffet trays, which was confusing at first. A little after 3 PM, they started putting out signs saying "for dinner guests only." We had already planned to pay dinner pricing since we arrived close to 3:30 PM when dinner service begins so we clarified with the server that we wanted dinner.
What We Liked:
* Our server Torrey was great, he was helpful, attentive, and made sure we had everything we needed.
* Decor, cleanliness, and overall ambiance were definitely a plus.
* Clear pricing (although some fine print would help, more on that below).
* The galbi, golden rice, green beans, and Thai chicken wings, beef & veggie dish were all solid.
* My son enjoyed the sushi, potstickers, and the kimchi (he said it was not spicy, but it was flavorful).
* Soft drinks (Pepsi products) are included and served in small glasses, but Torrey kept the refills coming.
* Torrey clearly explained that we needed to order ramen and hot pot items directly through him. (We did not order ramen or hotpot)
* Bonus perks: bubble tea and sparkling water in a cooler (is included)
My grandson loved the fresh fruit, pizza, and individual ice cream cups.
Room for Improvement:
* The crab and shrimp could use more seasoning. (Maybe add chili oil on the tables) The crab was labeled Cajun boil, but it needs more seasoning and some drawn butter wouldn't hurt.
* We weren't told ahead of time that crab legs are only offered with the dinner buffet. (Glad we arrived when we did or I would have been disappointed)
* There's a wide range of items, including conch, chicken feet, fish roe, duck, and octopus. If you've got an adventurous palate, this a fun place to try new things. My son was all in.
Insider tips:
Ensure you add the right location in your GPS. There is a business with a similar that is in S Austin.
The restrooms were spotless and smelled fresh (not overpowering or medicinal)
The pricing is different if they are serving lobster, so just ask your server. I'm not really a fan so I was happy I didn't have to pay for it.
Alcoholic beverages are available for an additional fee.
Bottom Line:
If expectations are set clearly, especially around what's included in lunch vs. dinner buffet, you'll likely enjoy your experience. I'm not sure I'd make the drive again from NE Austin, but for folks nearby or looking to try a little bit of everything, UmiHotpot Sushi & Seafood is worth a visit.
