Umi Sushi - Review - Loop - Chicago - The Infatuation

"This self-serve sushi spot in the Loop takes a page out of the fish market playbook and applies it to sushi—it’s all priced by weight. Everything at Umi Sushi is laid out buffet style, including their variety of maki and nigiri. We haven’t been here yet, but want you to know this spot exists." - John Ringor

I really like this sushi by weight concept and the quality I’m getting for the money. This place has great variety and the quality is great. I’d say the quality of the sushi is on par with most neighborhood sushi restaurants. The ingredients are fresh, the sushi rice is well cooked and flavorful. Overall just decent sushi. Price is very affordable too at $14.99/lbs. For reference, the two trays are about 0.7lbs each, so 1.4lbs together, and the total after tax is $24.22. That’s seriously good value as a premium sushi roll from the grocery store these days costs $12-15. So offering quality sushi at this price is seriously good value and I’m all for it I really like the whole concept and the sushi this place makes, I’ll be a regular and I hope they keep it up!

The rolls were delicious and a special thank you to the staff. We asked for salmon rolls and the chef came out and gave us a full consultation and made them exactly as we wanted. Super service. Thank you. We'll definitely be back. 👍🏻🔥

A great spot for lunch with a variety delicious special rolls and sushi. I love the concept of trying various options and pay by weight, perfect for those with commitment issues. For those who are indecisive and salmon lover, my favorite are - seared salmon nigiri - salmon inari (tofu pocket) - double salmon - salmon obsession These are good quality pieces that i wish i got more. We went a busy lunch time so a lot was waiting to be refilled but still plenty of good options available. Don’t sleep on the sauce station as well, very thoughtful with the cucumber water! Will come back!

Love this place! They provide variety of options and the sushi is great quality. Pricing is very reasonable. Each tray comes to about 1lbs, totaling around $15. Highly recommend this place to anyone who loves sushi

Very unique concept to grab a quick bite of sushi. You can pick any sushi pieces you like, and you pay by the weight! My plate was about $20. Would recommend for something quick, easy, fresh and healthy.

Appreciated this newly opened spot! The price was reasonable, and we loved the variety of rolls and nigiri options available. Would recommend the salmon and tuna nigiri, as well as the dynamite and eel rolls. The rice was well seasoned for both nigiri and rolls. Their setup is sanitary and makes sure that trays and tongs are cleaned between uses. They also have free cucumber water, and you can get your own eel sauce and spicy mayo. Only recommendation is having allergen labels for the rolls, especially for folks who have shellfish allergy but still love sushi. The staff was knowledgeable in answering our questions though. Overall, enjoyed this spot. Will def be coming back.

Can you guess the weight? No, silly, not my weight. The weight of my sushi. Have you heard of Umi Sushi? Umi Sushi Chicago just opened a new location in chicago two months ago at 60 E Jackson Blvd. Here the sushi is priced by the weight. You mix and match your sushi, take as little or as much as you please. There's a lot to choose from, something for everyone! The sushi is constantly being restocked so it's always fresh and delicious. Umi Sushi is open Monday thru Saturday from 10:30 am to8 pm and Sundays 11 am to 7 pm.

I don't leave reviews often, but I'm leaving one for Umi Sushi because the Loop is a harsh neighborhood for new restaurants, and I really want to see this place thrive. I absolutely love the pay by the pound concept since I'm a person of variety, and this allows me to try a lot of different things without breaking the bank or overeating. The fish is fresh, and the rolls are inventive. I hope this concept catches on.
