Have you ever had an unfortunate meal such that as the meal progresses, the more unappetizing the meal becomes?
This newly opened place is tucked in front of TSRB, slightly past Moe's, across from WaHo...you get the point.
It touts itself as Korean/Japanese, has very minimalist decor inside, and from what I remember, offers teriyaki chicken, bulgogi, dduk bokki (spicy rice cake dish, $10 and 2 minimum orders), daeji bulgogi, some Americanized and simple sushi rolls, several varieties of kimbap, the store-bought kind of ramen, and some snacks-ish type foods in the middle of the store, somewhat reminiscent of White Windmill. Most dishes come with a small cup of miso soup.
Kimbap and standard sushi will run from $6-15ish, the bento boxes will run around $10, so it's slightly pricier than the surrounding places to nom.
There's a small smattering of tables, and when we went there were no free tables, so we opted to go outside instead.
I ordered the bulgogi and it was probably the worst meal I had paid for in a very long time.
There was 4 very small cali roll pieces, a pitiful slice of mushy orange, and an entire box of rice with some measly, unappetizing meat on top. The soup was completely unremarkable and unappetizing.
I wish I had a camera to show the injustice to the cuisine of Korea, and the injustice to my wallet (at $8.64 per takeout box, this is something of an outrage to the average college student.) I told the girl 4 times I wanted a sit-down meal, but what I ended up getting was a to-go box that was sitting on the heater for who knows how long. The situational irony thing was that it took them a while to grab the box too.
The "beef" kimbap my friend ordered had some sort of spam in it. No thank you, even HMart would win this kimbap battle...and forget DanMooji. It's even twice as expensive as the other places!
Other offerings included ramen. Oh, and it's the supermarket Shin-ramen kind. Really? Really?? Couldn't even dress that up? For calling themselves healthy, that's hardly healthy.
Suppose I'm a bit of a purist, but I'd hardly label it Korean-Japanese fare, if the only Japanese offerings were udon (the supermarket ramen bowl kind), terikyaki chicken, and california rolls. HAHA, that's a funny one if I'd ever heard one.
I've had bulgogi at many places and this place got it completely wrong. It was completely bland, tasteless, overcooked shavings of pork...with some cabbage (that's bland as well). How do you do that when the Korean owners practically spoke Konglish?? I don't understand!
The place touts itself as a healthy food place but there are definitely some execution, conceptual, and conceptual execution problems.
