Best Kosher-Friendly Restaurants, Delis, and Bakeries in Metro Detroit | Eater Detroit

"A family-run cafe serving traditional sandwiches, soups and desserts with a few signature combinations—most notably a combo plate that pairs two potato latkes with two cheese blintzes—which makes for a comforting holiday-side or brunch option; the shop has added online ordering for convenience." - Serena Maria Daniels

Google
Can't remember the name of the Sandwich it was on the top of the backside of menu with most of their sliced meats, cheese and even Coleslaw on it. Would have been better grilled a bit but good as served also.

Emmanuel R.

Google
The corned beef and liver sandwich was surprisingly very very good. I thought I’d try something new and I don’t even like liver but this sandwich tasted amazing. Would definitely get it again.

Do you like the Cheers friendly neighborhood atmosphere in a small restaurant. If you do, this is the place for you. I definitely enjoyed the rustic but familiar vibe of years gone by. The selection on the menu is also large and it would be hard not to find something you like. I only gave it 4 stars for service bit that is not really a negative. They were efficient but not really that welcoming to us. But that was part of the charm really. We were new comers and not personally known by the staff and other customers. Yet it was a treat watching the staff interact with the usual they seem to know and treat like family.

Purchased one Reuben. received more sauerkraut than meat. Very pricey at $16 once credit card fees were added on at check out. 2 star’s for great flavor

If you haven't had the opportunity to try a sandwich at uncle Harry's your missing out. Every time I go and get a sandwich I'm ready to go back again. The soups are another classic on the menu. Usually will get that to go for the next day because it's soo good.

Google
The reuben is excellent. This place is great. My Dad, brother and I came in and left completely satisfied. The cabbage soup was delicious.

Google
I had been looking for a good turkey Reuben near Fraser for a minute. I found them online and was not disappointed. Excellent service from the staff and the food is excellent! Will be my go to from now on!

Google
Uncle Harry’s is the best deli on the East Side of metro Detroit with amazing deli food. It also Has style: photos of Harry and his family and famous visitors are all over. My favorite is the Donna (corned beef, pastrami, Swiss cheese and Russian dressing). Also love the pickles and the soup.

Yelp
Ordered carry out from this small, Deli restaurant. This place was packed. Ordered 2 corn beef, Swiss, Cole slaw, and Russian dressing. One on rye bread and one on a roll. Both were huge, and delicious. If you're hungry for a great corn beef sandwich, this is the place to go.

Yelp
Great food!! Always! Wait staff is friendly. Wait time is short. An old time deli with the walls covered in family photos.

Yelp
Lunch with a co worker. He had a club sandwich and onion rings. He says excellent! I had a tuna salad. It was very good but sort of small. Service is rather slow. Very clean and well maintained building.

Yelp
Five stars for the most tender dream come true today trying Uncle Harry's corned beef sandwiches for the first time. Heaven came on two fresh slices of soft rye, with a side of crisp tender onion rings. The cherry on top was a diet Dr. Brown's cherry soda. Welcoming service in a small neat diner that looks like 1977, when it first opened. Open weekdays.

Yelp
Uncle Harry's is a St Clair Shores icon. We have been coming here for years, both dining in and ordering out. One of the best corned beef sandwiches on the Eastside, probably the county and state as well! Rick is always there with a smile and a handshake! He takes the time to get to know his customers and will always genuinely ask how your family is doing. A small town feel with an old time ambience, the inside is the nostalgic deli vibe that makes the establishment a classic. Aside from the soup and sandwiches, their potato pancakes are phenomenal and they have one of the best Coconut Cream Pies I've ever tasted. Uncle Harry's, a true legend!

Yelp
I've been coming here for 34 years, and consistent is an understatement when you're talking about uncle Harry's. This place is iconic and it looks like the next generation is helping out now. So happy to see this and I know my family will continue to support them into the next generations as well. I was home alone as my family was away, and nothing sounded better than Uncle Harry's cabbage soup, & the Neil sandwich.

Yelp
I got a Corned Beef and Pastrami sandwich on Rye and I'm never going to another deli again. I wanted a nice Jewish Deli to frequent and I'm glad that i found this place. Unbelievable.
google avatar

Yelp
Had the #7 Neil pastrami, slaw, Russian dressing grilled and matzo ball soup. Very good! Service was excellent the people who work their seem like family. Plus they even recognized me by name from an fb post. Two

Yelp
Food is great. They're never open. Even when the sign outside the door states the hours. FRI at 2,:45, they were closed. I went on a wednesday at 4. Closed. Tied a month ago on a Thursday. Closes. I don't think they're open anymore

Yelp
Oh Uncle Harry's Deli .... Where have you been my entire life?? My boyfriend and I stopped in to Uncle Harry's on St. Patty's Day. I wanted a reuben and I also wanted to try somewhere local in the Shores. I've driven by Uncle Harry's a bunch and have even had it bookmarked for what feels like years. The long wait (both due to the holiday and the fact that I haven't been there before) was worth it! Despite choosing the busiest holiday to grab a reuben, everyone at Uncle Harry's Deli truly treated us like family the moment we walked in! They stayed open later just to finish all the orders, which gets major kudos from me. We were also super impressed because when we came back to pick up our to go order, the kind waitress who took our order said "Hey! Welcome back! Your order is ready to pick up. Thank you for your patience earlier. Have a safe St Patrick's Day!" I wish I knew her name because she was a ray of sunshine! The food .... 10/10 would eat this reuben everyday for the rest of my life. I got the #3. The turkey was so perfectly thinly sliced. The marble bread was toasted to perfection, never burnt. The thousand island was rich in flavor and the onion rings? AMAZING We would definitely stop in more often if their hours were different (closed on weekends, which is great since I am all about family time but sad for me because I hardly get off work before they close the rest of the week.) Stop into this absolute GEM in St. Clair Shores -- you won't regret it!

Yelp
I love uncle Harry's. I had the gut buster and a salad. The sandwiches are always outstanding. What blew me away was the freshness of everything. Especially the salad. It may seem like a small thing but everything was supper fresh.
google avatar

Yelp
Decided to try here after reading the reviews. I called in my order ahead of time. When I got there, it was ready. Walking in, the place reminded me of an old school deli. I was greeted right away. All the staff were properly masked and there's a big bottle of hand sanitizer by the register. I ordered the Adele- corned beef, Swiss cheese, coleslaw, Russian dressing- on an onion roll and fries. The sandwich was very good and everything super fresh tasting. The corned beef was lean (I don't like when it's mostly fat). And the coleslaw wasn't overly creamy. Next time I'll get it grilled because it wasn't hot like I was expecting. Fries were average deli fries- frozen and fried. Prices are reasonable. Will definitely be back for a sandwich again.

Yelp
Everything was great except when we got the receipt. We were not informed that there would be a surcharge for using a credit card. Had we been told this, we would have paid cash! I find places that do that are despicable and will not return!
google avatar

Christina B.

Yelp
Pricey as most deli's are - but delicious. I tried it in the last month and had not one complaint. All of the ingredients were especially fresh. It also stored well and I had half the following day. I ordered the #4 Adele Corned beef, swiss, cole slaw, and Russian dressing.

Yelp
This is a long time family favorite! We love Uncle Harry's! My wife is from Detroit, but has lived in Texas for much of her life, but we travel to Detroit often. Uncle Harry's is a MUST stop for us and nothing could be better! If we lived there, we would most likely be there at least once a week. It's just too good to do without!
google avatar

Claire D.

Yelp
The food is amazing. My parents loved this place and so do I! I recommend this place for anyone looking for good food near here. The cabbage soup is my favorite and I love the Adele sandwich- best corned beef around!
google avatar

Marne D.

Yelp
Please clean your men's bathroom, it is disgusting! Rick, please show a little class!
google avatar

Francine P.

Yelp
The BEST cabbage soup on the east side. Turkey Rubin sandwich good, also. Server was very attentive though the small restaurant was full of lunch time diners.
google avatar

Garth S.

Yelp
Great old school deli. If you aren't looking for a corn beef or pastrami sandwich, go to subway.
google avatar

Amie K.

Yelp
If you're looking for genuine deli, this is your place. No other on eastside. Try the Adele or the mark. Those are my favorites!
google avatar

Lionel B.

Yelp
Great deli. Opened in 1977. Very nice mom n' pop shop with affable employees. Try the #4 Adele (corned beef, swiss cheese, cole slaw, Russian dresing) get it grilled, on rye, extra lean and try a cup of the Cabbage Soup
google avatar

Olivia V.

Yelp
The food here is great. I got the #6 combo and would definitely recommend it. I love the patio on the side, which allowed me to sit and enjoy lunch with my dog on a lovely spring day. The woman working there even brought a little pup treat which was super nice. This was my first visit and I will definitely be back.
google avatar

Gerrit L.

Yelp
Best Deli on the east side. Top level matzo ball soup. I would also recommend the Estelle. The staff is also very nice.

DogMom A.

Yelp
Passing through from Texas and stopped in here for a traditional deli sandwich... ended up asking Harry to adopt me. Food is amazing and the photos on the wall make you feel at home. Must try

Yelp
Delightful owner. Well priced. Great food. Reuben was delish!! Would highly recommend.

Yelp
Awesome deli, old school awesome deli, they know what they are doing deli. They also offer a lean version of their roast beef sandwich which we thought was well worth the money. We'll be back again!'

Yelp
Seen [Best Sandwiches in Town] in the local news paper and I always like to try the best options so why not shoot on over and see what was the buzz.. Upon entering Environment: 1950 classic Local Detroit Baseball theme. Fixtures, photos and memorabilia even the bathroom has the same old vibes Democratic: Middle or Older Class with that single stand out 20 something couple. Quiet spoken environment, the loudest thing there was the ice machine. Choices: Vast Sandwich optionswith Speciality is the classic Ruben, Party Trays and Soup! Service: The long hair lady is very Short, basic, [what you need], [what would you like] and not any [would there be anything else's] added or cared for. Food: well prepared. The cost:serving size ratio is not really of value. $7.50-9.50 for a sandwich and a single slice pickle. The waffle fries is about 6oz serving, you get a bit more food at a coney for the price. Advertisement in the local paper said 40+ years and the best sandwiches in town. I believe Wally's frozen custard has better, more substantial sandwiches that are considerably better in quality and price. Overall: The lady serving with Harry is very short. Seemed kind of rude and maybe we looked out of palace and she didn't want us there (this is how it felt) Harry was very quiet. I feel they could have been more forward about being the best, ask what people thought when they take a bite and insuring the experience and quality are met with the standards it's trying to uphold. The vibe and atmosphere is great for the place, I just wish the people running the place brought the strong, well kept values with the service. The mediocre service, the slightly high pricing for the amount of food, as the quality is on point, made this overall review a 3 star. Hope this helps as it was a quite awkward experience considering the expectations listed were so high. Went in to get soup they didn't have, changed it up to a whole meal, wanted to get more but like I said felt rushed and not really given any direction other then the feeling of wasting the severs time. I may or may not try again.

Jennifer P.

Yelp
Ordered a reuben and french fries. Mediocre at best. Typical clump of meat in the middle of the bread so when it's cut it looks stacked. Meat was overcooked and dry although I did pay the extra money for the extra lean meat. Sauerkraut was oddly sweet, dressing was scarce and bread was just ok. It's a small place with about 7 tables and the inside is filled with tons of family memorabilia and international food products to purchase. Service was good, but it will be my one and only time visiting this small sandwich shop. $21.00 for a sandwich and fries that wasn't great and also charged 3% for using a card instead of cash.

SM B.

Yelp
Great little place. Really good corned beef & pastrami sandwiches. Lots of Jewish deli foods to pick from.
google avatar

Lakita M.

Yelp
Very friendly staff. Well lit lighting along with outdoors seating. Although I received the wrong order the corn beef and pastrami sandwich was excellent.

Sean K.

Yelp
Kinda got an attitude from the man behind the counter my first time there. Guess he doesn't like new customers.

Yelp
Co-worker's and I went in to get carryout there.. Very small place.. I suggest you order in advance. Not much room to wait around.. we ended up blocking the doorway where people are trying to get in to eat in the place because there wasn't really a designated area to wait. We all thought our choices were delicious.. We'll be back for sure.. Betty's Twin Special with swiss cheese - I added mustard to it and it was excellent. For the indecisive person - half is corned beef, the other half is pastrami. comes with a side of cole slaw or potato salad.. I chose potato salad and it was delicious. (about $9) Here are the comments from my co-workers. Loved the lox and cream cheese bagel.. Was looking for a place that had these.. A little expensive but was excellent. (Price was around $7) New York style cheesecake with strawberries was amazing. (about $3 for a slice) Cabbage soup was very good. (about $2.50 for a cup) Matzo ball soup was very tasty. (about $2.50 for a cup)

Michelle M.

Yelp
Great deli with good food. Probably the only good deli on the east side. They have free day-old bread you can take home.
google avatar

Anthony F.

Yelp
Great deli in heart of St Clair Shores. Had the "Adele" - corn beef, Swiss cheese, coleslaw and Russian dressing. What a great sandwich. Corn beef was so lean had no fat was delish. My only gripe is the pickle which was too salty. If your not meat person they have a great veggie Reuben which is very good as well. Bread for both sandwiches was very fresh making the sandwiches that much better. For dessert always ask what homemade pies they have that day.
google avatar

Rebecca R.

Yelp
I think every thing that can be said about Harry's has been said. My diet is limited to poultry and seafood hence I can't speak to the awesomeness of most of their sandwiches. As for the turkey sandwich I had on an onion roll it was most generous. More meat than I can eat. My lone turkey sandwich was good for two lunches so I guess it was worth $8. It was an old school deli sandwich. The place itself is stuck in time and rad. We were there during the lunch rush and everyone knew each other. Harry's is a friendly place. Great lunch spot!

Kathy P.

Yelp
Awful trying to get into the deli. No parking in front because it is by and facing a busy street. Signs say parking in the rear. Go to the back of the building to the door with the awning that says Uncle Harry's. Door locked No sign saying that they were closed or directing you to somewhere else. This was at 12:05pm on a Friday. I'll never go back to this place again.

Joseph M.

Yelp
Everything is great! Harry's has the best Corn Beef sandwich I've had. I highly recommend it.
google avatar

Dan M.

Yelp
Best Rueben sandwich in the area. Very small place. The owner is always there and very nice. Worked at the hospital near by and he would always would be happy to see us when we come in for lunch.

Jim R.

Yelp
Pretty damn good deli. Especially for the Eastside. Matzoh ball soup is very good. Friendly clean simply done right. Definitely will be back.
google avatar

James T.

Yelp
This is a solid deli, very focused on dishes more akin to Jewish Delicatessens, which I loved. Everything is good, cannot go wrong here.

Jacob P.

Yelp
Absolutely delicious, no wonder they have been in business so long. Defintely a new regular at uncle Harry's !
google avatar

Kelly A.

Yelp
Love their corn beef sandwiches, Pastrami is delicious as well. Hidden gem.blink your eye and you'll miss it.
google avatar

Vladimir S.

Yelp
Don't judge a book by it's cover. Just call in an order and talk with one of Harry's great staff. Pull your car in the back lot. Walk through that strange patio thing, & Wowza you have a kick-ass sub. I think they have sides, breads, cheeses too. Me and my coworkers loved this place. Uncle Harry is a great guy.
google avatar

Sally B.

Yelp
Hubby and I love Uncle Harry's as much as everyone else. Warm and inviting, tasty soups and sammies. Hubby loves the pastrami, I like the Ruben (get the regular with corned beef, it's tastier than the turkey version). They list the soup specials on the wall. Our waitress and I had a good laugh when hubby ordered the chickennoodlecabbagemotzoball soup. Ha! 3 soups, not 1, but an interesting idea!

Leah Y.

Yelp
We discovered this place while we were shopping for houses. Needless to say we literally put an offer in on a place in the area later that afternoon. This deli is not only incredible, but it's nostalgic. The service is incredible and the pastrami is always lean. They have the best matzo ball soup on the east side.
google avatar

Evelyn D.

Yelp
I tried it for the first time today. I don't like corned beef so I figured that was why I've never tried Harry's. I ordered the Matzo ball soup. The mazto ball was great but the broth was just ok. I was simple and ordered a grilled cheese and an order of fries for my table to split. The fries were soggy and gross. I wouldn't have served them. The grilled cheese was fine it was a simple grilled cheese. The Pastrami sandwich my friend ordered - she said the sauerkraut was tough and I could visibly see her having a hard time biting into the sandwich. The food was OK but I was shocked at the cost! It was $20 each for a super small cup of soup, soggy fries, and a grilled cheese sandwich. My friend only had a sandwich and split the fries. We did order the more expensive Dr. Brown's soda but GEEZ! I won't be dining here ever again.

Joel B.

Yelp
Over priced. I suppose it is post-covid pricing like every place else. $5.22 for simple plate of fries? The waitress was colder than my Pepsi at first. The condiment bottles were nasty, sticky and crusty. Not impressed. Will not go back.
google avatar

Michael T.

Yelp
An amazingly good deli, especially if you're Jewish, and eat kosher. I ordered the beef barley soup on my first visit and was extremely surprised. Super rich and earth with really good stock and flavor. Definitely not a thin broth soup like many of the rather Americanized restaurants try to pass off as real beef barley soup. Also, they added mushrooms, which, although not always common in beef barley, was a nice touch that added to the heartiness and overall appeal of the soup. Upon reading the sandwich menu, and being completely overwhelmed, I consulted the owner, who actually makes food, and interacts with his customers, and he suggested the corned beef sandwich, which I ordered. I further consulted him about toppings for the sandwich, and he definitely led me in the right direction. Russian sauce and cheese made the perfect match for the deliciously tender corned beef. The amount of corned beef was astronomically large compared to some of the skimpy portions other delis serve. Uncle Harry's is a St Clair Shores gem, and you'd be crazy to not give it a try. The in house dining area is a bit small, but has an old world homeliness to it. Definitely stop by and give it a try. I regret not giving them a try sooner, and definitely plan on sampling more of their menu in the future. Pricing is a bit high, but I'll take that for fresh homemade good over cheap processes food any day. Enjoy! Uncle Harry doesn't disappoint.

Yelp
Good food but wayyyy overpriced. Fries are $4 and to get your sandwich toasted, it costs75 cents. Wtf! Nice service and food is decent but never going back again because the prices are outrageous!
