Celeb Hit Uncle Paulie’s Deli Secures New Space on Spring in Downtown - Eater LA

"Italian-American storefront Uncle Paulie’s Deli has secured a new space in Downtown. The Spring Street address comes with a full kitchen hood too, which means customers can expect even more from the celeb-favorite spot, beyond the usual deli sandwiches and sides. Fast forward two years and James is taking the same look and vibe to Downtown, landing along Spring Street near Terroni and Verve Coffee. The area is rapidly changing, particularly with new boutique streetwear and clothing brands moving in, making Uncle Paulie’s a natural fit. The address itself, 820 Spring, is part of what used to be a casual lobby bar known as Bar Garcia that fed into the upstairs Tuck Hotel. Half of the street level is being converted to Uncle Paulie’s, with room for that kitchen hood as well as some seating inside and out (no deli cases though), while the rest of the building undergoes a rebrand. James tells Eater that the hope is to open in the first month of 2020, offering breakfast through dinner service and a menu that has everything from egg sandwiches to deli staples to red sauce options at night. If all goes well, there could even be room for late night weekend service once the club crowd lets out." - Farley Elliott

REVISED 11-01-2023: Tried this place again, same sandwich as below and it was much better than expected. Bread was glorious now. Not chewy like the first time. The roasted red peppers worked great this time. Not sure what it was about the sandwich the first time, but I had a better experience so I am raising the stars on this place. First time ordering from here. My rating is more of a 3.5/5. I ordered the Downtown Turkey. It comes with the following items below. Turkey, Provolone, Roasted Red Peppers, Iceberg, Onion, Oil & Red Wine Vinaigrette. A couple of things that came to mind. The bread was good, but it was also a bit on the chewy side. Perhaps a slightly too tough for me, but that's me. Turkey was delicious, tender and juicy as expected. I thought I would enjoy the roasted red peppers, but I found they're not for me. I believe this would have been a better sandwich if I stayed away from the roasted red peppers. I didn't like the flavor they brought for me. Other than that, it was a good sandwich. I would order again and try something else next time, or the same thing without the roasted red peppers. Price is fair for downtown, and would recommend this place for someone looking for a good sandwich.

I live in Downtown Los Angeles, I just so happen to be leaving the nutrition shop one street over and notice this place. I’m always down for a good sandwich so I had to try it. You guys know me I’m typically very hungry and had to get two sandwiches. One Paulie & peppers and a Cousin Bobby. Both sandwiches were amazing although I have to say after two sandwiches and a lemonade(which was amazing) I was still hungry(but I also skipped breakfast). I’ll stop in soon to try a few different sandwiches.

I ordered a chicken cutlet sandwich, pesto pasta salad, and caprese salad from Uncle Paulie’s, but unfortunately, the experience was disappointing. The pesto pasta was dry and stuck to the roof of my mouth, the caprese salad was underwhelming, and the sandwich was just average with soggy bread. To top it off, I got sick that same night. Overall, I wouldn’t go back

One of my coworkers told me to come to this place since I like to get sandwiches for lunch. I usually get Italian sandwiches so that's what I got when I ordered here. The sandwich is a little bit more expensive than my usual spot but this place is bomb and worth the price! They use a really good sesame seed baguette and I love sesame seeds. They also use a unique kind of mozzarella that I never had before anywhere which gives the Italian sandwiches a better flavor than any other sandwich shop. I highly recommend!

14.50 bucks for this tiny sandwich. Unfortunately the bread was hard and hardly had any veggies or beef. I’ll just rather go to subway. Paulie's Beef & Peps is a thumbs down for me.

Uncle Paulie’s is a very welcome addition to DTLA. There’s a void of good deli’s in Los Angeles, especially East Coast style delis. Uncle Paulie’s hits the spot. There’s a small counter inside, and a handful of tables outside. I had The Carol - chicken cutlet, fresh mozzarella, broccoli rabe, roasted red peppers and a balsamic glaze. I added hot peppers. It was outstanding. The sesame seed bread was crunchy on the outside, and soft inside. The chicken cutlet was crispy and warm, and seasoned perfectly. The broccoli rabe gave it added crunch and some delicious bitterness to offset the sweet of the peppers and balsamic. Everything is fresh and made to order. The true test will be the egg & cheese breakfast sandwich.

Had the Franny, not big on veggie only sandwiches but man the fried eggplant was super bomb on there. Legit was fire as hell man. 100% gonna hit the spot again. Great spot to stop on my bike rides

While you may THINK this is a physical location it is a very strange food pick-up locker. It is not a physical Uncle Paulie's storefront. I spent close to 10 minutes looking for the storefront until I followed an Uber Eats driver in. So be careful. The sandwich was ok, not fantastic. The bread was first-rate, the rest not so much.
