Since college, I've heard my ChiTown homies debate which is best: Harold's (Southside) or Uncle Remus (Westside). I'm not from the Chi, so I could never pitch in my 2 pennies. I've seldom been on the Westside, so once I saw they had an UR on 47th I had to seize the opp to join the convo.
Walked in, and I was incredibly assaulted by a thick funk--it was like a smothering musty funk similar to them polyester suits you find at a Goodwill. Like your Granddaddy's sock drawer. It smelled like Mississippi '68 in there. Y'all, I smelled all this through a KN95.
Now at this point, if you're asking yourself, "Then why would you still eat there buddy?" then you haven't grown up in the hood or at least hood adjacent. Some of the tastiest food comes from those greasy joints. Plus the line was almost out the door so it must be good, and I had my mind set on getting some.
After a 20min wait, I stepped up to the only cashier and ordered my fate, and using all the proper diction I could muster to break through the mask and the plastic barrier, I loudly said, "Can I have my mild sauce ON THE SIDE"...how do you think my order came out? ...See, this is why wars are fought. I didn't grow up here eating soggy sweet chicken. Save that for Chinese food. I like my bird crispy and the same with my fries. I'm a dipping sauce on the side type of brutha. But you know hood joints gonna give you YOUR food the way THEY think YOU should want it. Ugh. Either that, or they just don't listen.
Anyway, I get it home and I admit it was pretty decent. The breading of the chicken is similar to that of Church's Chicken (remember them?) with probably a third of the steroids. Although I prefer the biscuit, the rolls pretty good! Fries were basic Maxwell Street style fries. No personality.
So, next time I jump in a WestSide vs SouthSide ChiTown debate, I'm gonna have to side with the South and go with Harold's.
