Uncle Wrinkle

Uncle Wrinkle is a truly special place, run by the same family from Hong Kong since 1995. The restaurant is tiny—only three tables—but even if there’s a queue, it’s worth the wait. I’ve been here a few times, and it never fails to charm: the space is cosy, the staff are friendly, and most importantly, their British-style Hong Kong dishes are delicious. In my opinion, they deserve a solid four stars. Why not five? Well… we ordered the duck in orange sauce on two separate visits, and both times it arrived pretty cold. It could be a wonderful dish if not for this issue. They defrost some of their meats, which is probably why the duck wasn’t hot enough. Other dishes, however, did not disappoint—the crispy lamb in sauce was amazing, and the pork ribs were great as well. Overall, it’s definitely a place you should visit when you’re in the area.

My favourite dish is the crispy noodles with squid. The place has calm surroundings, beautiful ceramics, and a lovely husband-and-wife team. I’ve been a repeat customer because the food is great—though I do wish some customers were more patient, as I’ve seen a few be unnecessarily rude.

I can go on and on but I know everyone just wants the short version: wholesomely delicious, cooked to perfection and made in no time! It's the kind of feeling you are left after visiting your auntie/uncle/grandma who is the biggest foodie you know, but is never overbearing and just wants to make the best possible dish! We ordered and thoroughly recommend: saute pork shoulder with Szechuan pepper, broccoli and mushroom with beef stir fry, sesame prawn toast, pepper and salt squid

Egg fried rice with braised pork belly was delicious. The fried rice reminded me of the one from dintaifung, with each grain separate and tons of wok hey. Pork belly was melt-in-your-mouth tender, and came in a massive portion. After dozens of Chinese takeaways around London, and this is one of the best. A bit pricey for takeaway, but 100% worth it. 11 pounds for egg fried rice with braised pork belly.

Absolutely magical. Beautiful food, made with love and skill by the very sweet and welcoming owners. Cosy seating (only 3 tables so we arrived at opening to guarantee a spot) and very reasonable prices. Everything we ate was delicious. Some of the very best Chinese food I’ve ever had - loved it here.

As a British Asian, I actually find it quite hard to get really great “British Chinese” food that’s cooked fresh and made with proper, good-quality ingredients, but Uncle Wrinkle absolutely nails it. It’s a small operation (only a few tables), so I’d recommend going early, but the atmosphere is lovely. You can see everything being cooked right in front of you, and they even sell some gorgeous ceramics inside. We had the prawn toast, beef samosas, crispy chilli beef, lamb lettuce wraps and the prawn fried rice. Every single dish was delicious. Fresh, flavourful, and genuinely some of the best I’ve had in London. Highly recommend. We’ll definitely be back, and this has shot straight onto our list of favourite local spots in the city.

Very nice owner and service! The food was delicious, a good size and not oily at all, and they prepared the tea fresh there. It is a small place that can get quite warm and it is more of a takeaway shop than sit down but we very much enjoyed our time there and it felt homely and never rushed. Would highly recommend this local gem (also for vegetarians)!

Great food, extensive selection whilst upholding the highest of quality of food and cooking. Great selection for meat, fish, vegetarian and vegan eaters. Lovely staff and they are extremely hard working to provide you with the best standard of food. We had the kung po prawns, prawn toast, mapo tofu, spring rolls and chicken and sweetcorn soup. Delicious. Great drink choices also, lovely teas. Cannot fault and will be back.

Straight up London style Chinese, featuring all the old classics like sweet and sour, chow mein, pork dumplings, kung pao, and chinese greens. Uncle Winkle himself will likely be cooking it up for you behind the counter with a smile. Great for a cheap takeaway if you're around Goldsmiths. Got me through a couple of nights studying or laughing with friends. I especially recommend the oily goodness of Yeung Chow fried rice. £4.50 for a large is pretty good, especially on a student budget, and many mains are under £5. In fact, I think the most expensive thing on the menu was under £10 and that was roast duck! P.S. Even if you ask for something extra spicy, it will only be mild. P.P.S. You can get an order of cold lychee for dessert. Nom.

This is a great little take away, pricier than most in the area, but their duck in orange sauce is not to be argued with, seriously! It is annoying that you have to pay about £3 for rice, but you can always make your own at home OR just share a portion with a friend, as they are pretty big. Also, they give you loads of prawn crackers and a little pot of chili sauce to dip if you are taking away, Which you probably will have to as there are three tiny little tables in there (as the photo indicates) and they are generally always full. I am always really boring if I get Chinese and get chow mein or sweet and sour. But this place made me experiment with prawn toasts and the duck. Really yummy, especially if you are student in the area because it is a quick hunger fix you can really rely on, and if you become a regular the owner will love you!

A Chinese takeaway based in the middle of South East London's New Cross. The food provided here is of varying quality very much depending on the dish. If you're a lover of sweet and sour chicken the watery sauce served here is probably not for you, however the true order no one should be without of this place is the crispy chilli beef. Pretty standard fair on the whole but the staff are friendly and you often get the odd freebee with your meal. Also a winner if you like you're takaways to have a curious name!

This place is fantastic. Wonderful food and lovely friendly service. The crispy chicken, in particular, is excellent. My friend and I eat from her often. Delicious. I couldn't recommend it more highly!

Decent chinese take-away when lazy. The owner is super nice and likes to give freebies. The quality of food is alright but lots of room for improvement. It is however the best chinese in New Cross.

this is it. the best crispy shredded beef in chili sauce ever made by man.. been living in new cross for 9 years and uncle wrinkle is in a class of his own. prawns on toast is legendary. duck in orange-yummi yummi in my tummy. only complain is when crispy beef runs out and the crispy chicken is no substitute by any means. oh, the chinese owner couple are really nice and pleasant people. I can't praise this place enough but I think you've got my drift. jp
