Hauser and Wirth Couple Opening New Restaurant in Soho | Eater NY

"Opened in 2016 in the Catskills by Gavin Brown and Rirkrit Tiravanija, Unclebrother functions as a gallery and food "canteen" and has hosted pop-up chefs over the years." - Emma Orlow

The Best Places to Eat and Drink in the Western Catskills | Eater NY

"This scenester project is from New York gallerist Gavin Brown and influential Argentine-born Thai artist Rikrit Tiravanija, whose installations often include shared meals. The pair, who have weekend homes in the area, bought a derelict car dealership and turned it into a space for art and food, with a gimmicky draw of free curry. The multi-course meals are absurdly cheap: Thai salad with grapefruit, vegetable green curry, a sausage & potato turnover, Thai tacos three ways (chicken, fish, and pork) and buñuelos all for $25, or a salad, deep-fried Brussels sprouts, vegetable green curry, mac ‘no’ cheese, a country-fried steak with mashed potatoes, and chocolate cake with berry compote all for $20. The catch: it’s only open during the summer." - Richard Morgan

Excellent fixed price menu. Reasonably priced and excellent food. If you're considering it, do it.

I’m so disappointed in our experience here—I had been looking forward to checking this place out for a long time. Aside from one nice staff member that went out of their way to bring us our food (you typically have to go retrieve it from the bar but I think she took pity on us since we were soaking wet from the rain and had a little one), my wife and I felt pretty unwelcome in the space since we had to be indoors with our two-year old. If this establishment doesn’t want children inside they should become one that is explicit about that. Staff came over and fully moved a giant piece of the dining room out of the space because my child went near it (this was a piece of art on the wall behind this table. She did not hurt it in any way). I felt very uncomfortable and worried that her simply being at the restaurant was making the staff anxious and annoyed from the way they engaged with us. Across the board we felt a sense of annoyance and condescension from the entire team. My wife and I felt so uncomfortable we chugged our drinks and bolted. It’s been hard to find a place in this area where we feel really welcome, so this sort of behavior hit us hard. We were also starving after we left. Even though we ordered the “entire menu” which is a fun idea for an option we ended up eating 3 dumplings and some plums. We had to make second dinner at home. We won’t be coming back.

Been to uncle brother the past few years always a special treat great curries good food a fun vibe in Hancock but very sad and disappointed to arrive tonight and find they’ve abandoned their wonderful menu for some freaky stuff tofu skate wings and pepper ice cream. Nothing edible the average person or even an adventurous eater. We turned around in s second. What a waste of a great concept and obviously we weren’t the only ones disappointed what used to be a crowded place was abandoned on Friday night nobody there. No wonder! I hope they return to their senses and serve food people might want to eat.

Update: 7/1/23: it's been some time since I visited Uncle Brother's. The menu is still incredible: fresh ingredients, locally sourced and well seasoned. Tonight the menu was a la carte. They had lamb, chorizo and seafood paella, curry and rice, salad, and ice cream. It was great to see the place packed and everyone talking to everyone. So you may wait if you don't get there early. Summer 2018: Best hidden gem in Hancock. I found this restaurant by pure luck. The food was amazing, tasty, and fresh. Everyone was so nice. I went with my husband and we made friends with the people sitting next to us. It is a set menu for the weekend at $25 per person which is worth it. A definite must if you are in the area.

Yelp
This place was an unexpected gem. The environment was layback and the place is also dog friendly. The food and service was good. It was kinda a self service place. You would order, hand your ticket to the kitchen staff, grab you own drinks and than once the buzzer goes off you would go up and grab your own food.

Yelp
I'll start by saying that Unclebrother is the best food you can find in Hancock. It has a great ambiance and always has a fun menu. DONT miss out on the free curry. It's probably the best thing there!!

Yelp
We're upstate weekenders, and SO appreciate that this place exist in Hancock. The food is amazing! The service impeccable, and they have lots of outdoor seating available. I also appreciate the thoughtfulness in curating the gallery. Finally, I'm just so grateful for the values they represent.

Yelp
Amazing! Have wanted to go for a while...always hear such good things. Food was so great. Each night the menu is set...we had Italian night. Caprese salad, fried rice balls, pizza, pasta, and desert. All for $20! Fantastic flavors and generous portions. The entire team is friendly and talented. There is an art gallery there, and their FaceBook page lists them as a gallery, but this is a wonderful place to eat, meet friends, relax, and remember why you came to the country in the first place. Loved everything about it. Do yourself a favor and GO, We'll be back for sure...

Yelp
The dessert was the best part. The food was good too - sufficient portions and the free curry was spicy. Remember to ask for it. It was a good place to visit on a sunny Sunday with ample seating outside. We enjoyed it.

Yelp
Nice place, food was ok, cute plywood bar, place was packed and it was hard to find a seat. The crowd is very mom and pop hipster, you know, the boxed wine crowd who go to galleries without looking at the art. Not friendly, not unfriendly, just blah.

Yelp
Food is delicious, fresh and unique. Don't listen to the one star reviews - someone clearly had a bad experience but we've only had the opposite. The free curry is a must have if you like green curry. Found most dishes to be innovative combos - chicken with lemon, olive and dates; or cantaloupe with cucumber, mint and chili powder. Will definitely be back next summer - thank you!

Yelp
The weekend I went the food was good, but not amazing. Some courses were delicious and others seemed basic. The menu changes every weekend. The wine is ridiculously overpriced ($8.64 for about half a standard pour since they use tiny cups) and it was just okay. The atmosphere is cool, I enjoyed my time there and appreciate having a place like this in Hancock.

Yelp
Great addition to Hancock. Food is fantastic and adventurous, wine and beer very overpriced is my only complaint!
