Under Canvas Is Opening 4 New Camps in California - AFAR

"Scheduled to open in 2021 about 15 minutes from the national park entrance known for stargazing, this site will feature safari-style tents that sleep up to four guests with king beds and wood-burning stoves. Campsites will include daily housekeeping, hot water, and low-flow toilets, and the project is part of a 50% expansion in the company's outposts that emphasizes sustainability — significant energy and water savings compared with hotels and a goal of zero-waste operations through plastic elimination, recycling, and compostables." - Katherine LaGrave

Under Canvas Great Smoky Mountains (Great Smoky Mountains, Tennessee) 1 Verified Reviews | Tablet Hotels

"Most of the camps from the Montana-based purveyors of tented luxury are set out west, but Tennessee’s only full-scale national park has one of its own. Under Canvas Great Smoky Mountains lies just outside of Pigeon Forge, home of Dollywood, and is surrounded by a spectacularly forested mountain range that reaches clear across the North Carolina border — smaller and perhaps more subtle than some of its counterparts in the Rockies, but no less appealing a place for a bit of outdoor immersion." - Tablet Hotels

We spent 3 fabulous nights at Under Canvas in August, the 2nd stop of 7 on our Tennessee and Kentucky roadtrip. |We are a family of five and had two tents - a Safari one for us and a triple for our 3 kids (18,17&14). The beds were really comfy and the bathrooms in the tent and outside were great. I am not a natural camper and loved the experience. The UC team organised two activities for us - River Snokelling on Greenbrier River (cold but brilliant) and White Water Rafting on Pigeon River (great fun). We loved driving around the area. The team on-site were so helpful with tips and recommendations and looked after us really well at breakfast and dinner. Being able to grab tea and coffee at anytime was really handy too.|We really enjoyed sitting around the fire in the evening playing games and eating s’mores too. The night skies and sunrises/sunsets were breathtaking. We would 100% go back and I would love to stay at some of the other sites too.

I had a bonfire wedding reception here and it was incredible. They help out a ton and I am so grateful 🙏🏻 The tents were fantastic, I suggest paying extra for one with a shower and bathroom. Totally worth it. Such a phenomenal experience all the way around! Will definitely return next year. The food served in the main lobby was delicious!! Atmosphere on point in every way. 💖

Our family spent a long weekend at Under Canvas Great Smoky Mountains and we can't wait to try another location. The tents were comfortable what an indoor shower and toilet. We were surrounded by the woods and we saw bunnies and deer. The staff was always there and helpful. The staff helped us plan our day around the national park and printed out maps for us. No wifi - No GPS. There were smores and games to play. In the morning there was yoga and crafts for younger kids. Can't wait to do it again!

So me and my family went down to the Smokey’s for a trip we stayed here ( tent 26 is the best) the rooms were good except they had no outlets and no WiFi but there were showers in the tent. I had a very good time there . At night a band called “Tennessee Rose “ played they were a nice old couple good at music. The servers are good and there is no cellular so you are cut off from the world

If you’re looking to glamp, this is the place to go! The staff is friendly, courteous, and listens to customers. Food is fabulous although the delivery of the food is a bit slow. Absolutely beautiful location. The tents are nice, comfortable and you have all the creature comforts. Keep in mind you’re in a tent, so if you have a family near your tent, you’ll probably hear the kids, but this place is wonderful. Very close to the great Smoky Mountains, and easy access into Pigeon Forge. We will definitely use Under Canvas again for more clamping adventures!

I have never done any camping or glamping before, but after this, I don’t think I will be able to do it again. It wasn’t that under canvas is not nice, it’s me! I’ve stayed at airstream before where there was AC, running water and electricity. But I was just not able to live without these. I used my phone for navigation from charlotte to Pigeon Forge where my phone was nearly 2% when we got to the camp and found there’s nowhere to charge the phone in type c charger. We asked the front desk if we can borrow one and they couldn’t provide it. There is no WiFi at ground which is kinda frustrated. But that’s the experience of camping/glamping No? Overall I think I had a fun time.

This is a wonderful experience and the crew here is absolutely amazing. One thing to keep in mind; you can hear what happens in the tents around you. Not a big deal, as most folks are aware and are courteous but we happened to land next door to the rudest, most inconsiderate family who allowed their twin toddlers to run amok in the main camp tent and to scream their heads off all night long while we were asleep. This happened repeatedly thru the night; my husband eventually walked down to the office after 1 am to let someone know. The staff here was very courteous, understood our frustration, moved us to a tent farther away and handled the situation perfectly. I know we were not the only guests that were disturbed by this family. The area is beautiful, the location of the facility is set in the prettiest of places, there is ample opportunity to just enjoy nature and the tents are amazing! You can't go wrong here! Just be sure if you are retired to know that there are a lot of families here; 99% of them are polite but you never know when you will run across the ones that refuse to make their kids behave. Food is outstanding and you are very close to Pigeon Forge, Gatlinburg and of course, the National Park. The staff will make you feel like you are the only campers...absolutely fabulous group of staffers here!

I did not expect to like this, as it is very different from the way I normally like to travel (I tend more towards luxury full service hotels in city settings), but I ended up loving my time here and wanting to come back again soon! I booked this because of the partnership with Hyatt, and to get double qualifying nights as part of their promotion. The first thing that struck me was just how good condition everything at the camp is in. As someone who lives in a wooded humid area, I could never get canvas to look that good for long - they must clean everything at least once a week. The next thing you'll notice is just how nice the staff are. They are uniformly lovely, helpful people who are good at their jobs and want to be there, and it shows in everything they do. The food at the restaurant punches well above its weight, and we remarked how nice it was given the fact they have a captive audience and could have easily cut corners here, but very much do not. Overall, the experience is quite restful and I highly recommend that you give it a try!

Yelp
The tents are as advertised, spacious, comfortable beds, and a porch. The staff is friendly, respond and informative. There are a lot of children's activities. There are only 3 fire pits, but a very inviting "lobby / restaurant " tent. A bit of a walk from parking to tent. I highly recommend a tent with restroom and one of the tents under the forest canopy (13-16).

Yelp
Have to admit, staying there is pricey. That is the only reason we didn't give them 5 stars. However, the accommodations, the staff, the food and the R & R we got while there for 3 nights was the trade off. No cell phone or internet...what a blessing! The tent was clean, nicely appointed with soft-as-silk, layered luxury linens, plenty of pillows, towels and the like. Our tent had a flush toilet (sofa and chairs and coffee table) and a hot-on-demand shower, with soaps, shampoo, conditioners. We went all luxury, but if you are ok with a community (separate/private) bathrooms, you can downsize on the luxury and still get a wonderful camping experience. Plenty of places to eat in the area if you want to shave a little of the cost of your stay...but remember, no food in the tent! That rule is a true bonus for you, wildlife and future campers. The community bathrooms on sight, by the way, were very, very clean. Honestly, if you liked camping as a kid but don't want to sleep on the ground and pitch a tent any longer, or if you have kids and want to have a family blast without TV, internet, iPhone, take them to Under Canvas and get to know them again and just play! Lots to do in the area (rafting, tubing, zip lining, hiking, horseback riding and more). The little town of Gatlinburg is nearby if you're not the amusement park kind (Dollywood is also nearby and some folks like that kind of stuff along with other street-lined amusements). Our group preferred the camping, the hanging out, campfires, on sight games, complimentary coffee/infused and fresh water, s'mores, (and cocktails, beer, wine for purchase)! Met campers from all over the country, all ages and everyone was excited to be there and were friendly. Can't say enough about the terrific, warm and welcoming staff and the wonderful food! Loved our trip and reunion with good friends. We will visit again.

Yelp
A Under Canvas visit had been on our list for some time. We were on a small road trip from Atlanta and decided to stay here. It was about 4 hours from Atlanta and about 3.5 from Nashville with stops for food and gas. It was perfect in every way and as advertised. There is zero cell phone reception / wifi and it felt great to disconnect from the world for a few days. This location felt like we were so far away from everything, yet we were only about 30 minutes aways from the fun of Gatlinburg. We went out and explored the nearby attractions in the day, went hiking and then returned in the late afternoon. Our tent was perfect, king bed was very comfortable, warm and we had our own private bathroom. I would suggest showering in the communal showers as it has heaters and is much warmer than the tent. The tent did have its own fire oven but it's not enough to keep you warm when showering. We had lanterns in our tent, a chair and a porch with a few chairs. The staff here does go above and beyond for anything you need making you feel like you're at a five star resort. The staff will make sure your heaters are started and warm for your arrival and keep them going if you're not comfortable doing it. We loved coming back to our warm and cozy tent after hiking in the Great Smoky's. S'mores at the fire pit at night, live music in the lobby, canvas painting sessions and fresh made to order food at the kitchen starting at 7am. Fresh coffee, hot cocoa and tea available all day in the lobby. We really had a great time here and plan to visit other locations next summer. I highly recommend a night or two here and it's definitely family friendly, all the kids we came across looked to be having a great time. Enjoy!

Yelp
I just visited the place and it is all that it's cracked up to be. What you see on the brochure is what you get. There are no TV, telephone, or Wi-Fi access. Only bring your iPad if you like playing games offline and that is limited as well. The city offers you lots of fun activities and adventures and so does Under Canvas. Thinks like hiking, canoes, fishing, just like it says in the brochure. They have great food , games and activities while you stay. The staff is really fun and accommodating, the cook even cooked some food we bought from the outside for use while we stayed. Now that is accommodating. The only things I did not like were not being able to park closer to our tent and no being able to lock our stuff up when we left the tent. But nothing came up missing plus I did not leave anything of value behind when we left. Overall five stars this place is amazing though. Totally different from your traditional hotel/motel stay away from home .

Yelp
Glamping in the Smokies and remote fine dining has arrived! We found this local glam camp while looking at some other locations for vacation. We hopped into the car and headed over to have some dinner with them during their soft open. We had a delicious vegetable rich meal, and toured the yurt like platform tents. My child ate the asparagus. It was a pretty hip environment. We took a gravel road to get there, but it will be paved by the spring 2019 open. This unique place of respite is worth checking out. *They are closed for the winter, and will reopen in the Spring.

Yelp
The tents, gathering place, and even the bathrooms were all clean and beautiful! The food was excellent and the staff was friendly and helpful. Highly recommend!

Yelp
The best sleep I've had in years surrounded by beautiful Mother Nature herself. This place was beyond what I expected, my husband, son and I enjoyed the outdoor games, complimentary s'mores, delicious food, and friendly staff. We will definitely be back.

Yelp
Under Canvas Smoky Mountains was so much fun! My husband and I booked this weekend as a "pre-honeymoon" the weekend before our wedding. It was everything and then some. As soon as we walked into our tent, we were greeted to champagne and beautiful flowers! We felt so spoiled! The whole weekend was filled with smores, heli rides (thanks to the front desk), and late night snuggles with our dog under a blanket of stars.

Yelp
Was on a road trip with my husband. We didn't want to stay in a hotel and came across Under Canvas. We only stayed for one night but wish we could have stayed longer. From just enjoying being out in nature to the comfortable bed in the tent, the stove that you can build a fire to warm your tent, friendly staff, great food, cornhole, games, s'mores by the fire, and more. We will definitely be keeping an eye out for under canvas on our next toad trip.

Yelp
Y'all, I'm in LOVE! Under Canvas has stolen my heart and buried it under one of their tents (and not in the Edgar Allen Poe way)! My family (three toddlers, my hot husband and myself) all just spent the best two nights of our lives at this glamping paradise!! No hassle to put up tents, no pressure to cook the food, s'mores before bed, lawn games, and best of all: NO SIGNAL, meaning no distractions of the electronic variety!! And y'all, some of the tents even have SHOWERS AND TOILETS!!! Whaaaaaaat?!?!?! Have I really become that soft?? Who cares when you can just relax and enjoy the great outdoors to this extent!! I am reserving a spot for my husband and myself to return on our anniversary! Feel free to join us, just get your own tent!!

Sara Q.

Yelp
The location is what let's this place down. The tents are nice enough but there is no scenery outside of being in a valley surrounded by trees...no views of the Smokey mountains. Also, the camp side offers no activities. The price definitely doesn't match the experience. We were so excited for this "glamping" experience and came away disappointed.
