Where to Find Portland’s Best Underground Bars

"With an unassuming storefront a block off Main Street, Under Bar captures a bit of the underdog spirit of Vancouver itself. Step down a short flight of stairs into an underground clubhouse that lands somewhere between a retro speakeasy, a VFW hall, and a friend’s basement living room. This queer-friendly oasis boasts Sunday drag brunches, karaoke nights, trivia nights, and open mic nights, as well as professional standup. The kitchen offers serviceable flatbread pizzas, and the specialty cocktails (and mocktails) are among the ’Couve’s most compelling." - Nathan Williams

Nice cocktail bar. Cool vibe, very dark and moody with neon lighting. I didn’t really love any of their cocktail offerings however the bartender was more than willing to make us something off-menu. The bar itself is well stocked, but don’t expect any super niche or extravagant liquors or amaros. Bartender and other staff were super friendly!

This place is amazing, the vibes, music and staff were very friendly. I came In with all my friends to celebrate our friend’s birthday. Our waitress was Madison she was very helpful in helping us decide what to get with great suggestions. Service was impeccable, and she was gorgeous! The bartenders make great drinks. DJ comes on after 9pm and love that they play Spanish music here. Will be back soon ! Also GET THE CORNBREAD!

Cocktails were good. Last time I was there DJ wave or wavy, whatever guy with the shades, he sucks. Idk why they keep bringing him back to DJ when he can’t seem to read the crowd

I was very disappointed and not happy in the service. I planned my birthday party under the boot. The host did not host the whole night. She told me she going to be busy and wouldn't be able to serve us the whole night and that me and my guess will have to go to the bar ourselves. The presentation and sign was less than 30 sec. When the host was serving my guess and I the champagne, a random guy took the bottle from HER/the host hand and put his mouth on the bottle and drunk it. When me and my guess asked for another bottle she said no. The empanadas was nasty and she said she was going to tell someone in the back but never come back to address the issue. The services suck badly.

Good atmosphere and the best drinks are made by the best bartender Domenica.

I usually love this place for music and great drinks, been there often. However last night there was a doorman who refused to let me in and said I was drunk (meanwhile I only had. One drink all night). I even asked what was going on and he refused to talk to me, he only said this to my boyfriend. Apparently this is an issue here, I saw a post from 3 months ago. This happened to a designated driver while her drunk friends were let in. I think they need to review what a visibly intoxicated person actually looks like or they will keep losing good business. Upsetting experience.

Visited Under The Boot for the first time on Friday night for some drinks. The space is really beautiful and the music was on point. My wife and I sat at the bar and ordered a couple of beers. The menu listed these beers as $8 each. The bar tender told me (yes told me - no check was given) that it was $21.67. I asked if gratuity was included and he said "yes". I really don't like when gratuity is auto included and especially when the customer is not told that it is auto included. I find it just classless. Especially on a party of two sitting at the bar. I also shouldn't have to ask if gratuity is included. I typically tip $2 a drink anyways but but hate feeling like I'm required to tip - or even worse, a tip is snuck on my check. This seems like something management could easily fix in which case I would return to the bar for drinks.

Yelp
We had a great time here ! It was a great post dinner activity after the miracle on Mercer. There's a DJ that came at around 9pm and he played some great throwback hip hop and R&B mixes. We didn't order food but there is a dinner menu. We had several drinks and enjoyed them. They were also strong. The service was also great. I would come back here again in the future. P.S this place had a club vibe.

Yelp
WHAT A VIBE!! Located under Boots & Bones is a small speakeasy with limited seating and different cocktails than those offered upstairs. The DJ plays low tempo music very similar if you're familiar will SXM BPM Chill station. The service is great, slow at times, but understandably so because it's busy for a small space. The cocktails are all so packed with flavor and natural juices blends. It's You can taste the hand crafted mixology that goes into them. I do have to say it's too dark to take pics of your drinks/food. Cant wait to come back!

Yelp
Hip new spot in Jersey City, Under The Boot is a speakeasy, hidden bar and dance floor. It's a fun time for sure... lots of booze and dancing, enough said.

Yelp
I love this place! Good music, Good vibes, it very chill and laid back in here if your into that. No entry fee. Great service! I don't know if it's the same Dj every time, but the Dj that was there the night I went was amazing. Throwbacks and current songs all perfectly mixed together! They even had a Christmas theme going on when I went. It's a great place with great music and drinks without all the chaos. Mixed demographic and everyone is nice and seems to get along. Will be back.

Yelp
We went late night. Crowded it great music. The DJ kept us fun all night. This place was recommended for the cocktails. But I was not impressed. Still a fun place to dance and party.

Yelp
Good music. Nice ambiance. Drinks are overpriced for what you get. But, that's most places these days. I didn't try the food so I can't comment on that.

Yelp
I came here this past Friday night as I saw it on IG and wanted to give it a try since I'm slicing in the Jersey area now. The place was not outwardly seen at first but I also wouldn't call it as a speakeasy as there is a clear sign of the place as I'm use to speakeasies being as hidden and unexpected as possible. Went inside and seemed to be slightly busy, getting a table was easy and service was attentive. There are drinks, small bites and even the full menu served served there besides the drinks on the full menu. The place was playing good music which was what we wanted and the drinks were delicious, I had the secret passage. We also ordered wings and wagu sliders. The wings were cooked like Texas style wings which were great and sliders tasted like regular beef sliders that weren't bad. We knew there was DJ coming and expected some hot beats but unfortunately it was repeated techno vibe music that we don't care to listen to that mych and just kept going ,that's when we knew it was time to head home. Cool chill place but we could definitely use a variety of music.

Yelp
This was one of the worst bar experiences of my life. I regularly go to speakeasies and cocktail bars, most with a classier atmosphere than Under the Boot, and at every one of them ever, even those with a dress code requiring formal wear, I've always been permitted to wear my cowboy hat, which I wear everywhere. I assumed that of all places that the bar connected to Boots & Bones would not only permit but encourage cowboy hats. And it seemed so at first. There were several girls there with cowgirl hats, some of whom I took pictures for or with. I wore my own hat inside for over an hour and a half without incident. Then, utterly out of the blue, a bouncer came around to me and multiple groups of girls with cowgirl hats, insisting that they take them off, and forcibly removing anyone who didn't comply quickly enough to his liking. I was with a group of about eight other people, all of whom I had brought. They followed me out, and we saw several other groups leave at the same time due to the sudden enforcement of the hat policy. This is a bar that clearly despises its patrons and is not interested in retaining them as repeat customers. I had initially been planning a birthday party their with a large group, but now I'll never return and will adamantly discourage anyone I know from ever going to Under the Boot.

Yelp
Absolutely love this place. It's next to a bigger restaurant so honestly, if you're not paying attention you can walk past it but its so cute. It's small, intimate, trendy, and just all around vibey. I went on a Friday night because I heard that's when hip hop/r&b vibes are the best-- it was kind of a mix of that and techno so if you're into it, try Friday. I would've loved more afrobeats/reggae/hip hop but overall I loved it. They have small plates but I don't recommend. Considering there's tons of better food in the area for a ore cost effective price. The drinks are pricey too but they were delicious. this is a nice place to start your night if your in JC.

Yelp
Service and drinks were great! Plus music and a vibe on Thursday. Haven't had any of the bites but the food smelled really good

Yelp
I was expecting a speak easy but this is more like nice underground bar with good vibe and party like atmosphere. Nice cocktails for sure. Service is good too. Wouldn't call it speak easy as music is way way way too load to chat.

Yelp
Fun vibe underneath, but really bad dress code policy. Showed up with designer boots on and was turned down for wearing boots to a bar with the name boot in it, how ironic. The bouncer blamed it on the ludicrous manager but also hinted I can pay him off to get in. Shouldn't be turned down wearing designer boots on a Saturday night at 7:00 sorry.

Yelp
As a local, I visited this bar and was quite disappointed. The bar seems to have an inflated sense of self, attempting to present itself as a high-end establishment without the substance to back it up. Ultimately, it's just a ground-level bar with cocktails priced at $20
