Under The Radar Brewery Review - Midtown - Houston - The Infatuation

"At Under The Radar Brewery, your objective is to pop a squat at the shadiest picnic table in Houston and find a beer that you want to order again and again for a few hours. The Midtown brewery is mostly covered by tents, and serves as a meetup point for run clubs and a place for dog lovers to have a pilsner while their pooches chase squirrels. While the scenery isn’t great—it’s mostly gravel—this is a great spot to duck off, so come here when you want a lowkey place to drink a Hazy Town IPA without worrying that you’ll run into anyone you know. Plus, if you become obsessed with a beer at Under The Radar, you can order a 64 oz serving to-go." - Gianni Greene

Very nice environment, the beer was good. It was hoppy for my tastes but everyone was friendly and overall pleasant. If you're driving here carpool. The parking lot has 10 spaces, not including street parking. Highly recommended for a quiet and enjoyable experience with friends and family.

Real laid-back establishment; very chill 😎. The beer is good and plentiful. There's plenty of outdoor seating with canopy if you want shade. Plus, there's cornhole and table Jenga blocks. Very nice place. We enjoyed the Black Jade coffee porter & Boysen Love Hefeweizen. What I especially like about this place is that they have Kombucha, we had the Lavender and Lemon Ginseng. This place is definitely Under the Radar. Can't wait to try their other beverages.

Google
Such an incredible place with a wonderful atmosphere. Sarah was such as great enjoyment and so very pleasant. She helped the place go from great to fantastic. All the beer we tried was very good. My wife was a huge fan of the 3rd coast IPA which was a grapefruit flavored, and I was a big fan of the Irish Red they had.. Definitely would come back. Nice little hidden gem on the outskirts of midtown.

Google
Awesome local brewery with a great beer selection. With about 15 beverages on tap, they have something for everyone! From Kolsch (my favorite) to stout to a ginger ale kombucha - what else could you want?! I think they are expanding and constructing a new brewhouse next door. They even do bike and run meetups every week. Clean bathrooms and a very chill guy working behind the bar. Will be coming back for sure! Not positive if they do a steak night but I would 100% be there if/when they do.

Swung by yesterday and had a great time! That 2112 was delish! Wife loved the hefe! Chill outside sitting area. Looking forward to returning!

Google
Chill brewery that is truly Under the Radar. Came here for a team happy hour on a Friday afternoon and really enjoyed it. I tried the Pilsner and Lager on tap … both tasty. Seating is totally outdoors. Some covered some uncovered. Parking is tight …. Primarily street parking so give yourself extra time to find a spot on a busy night.

Google
Great midtown brewery with minigolf, food trucks, and events. We have been here multiple times. The beer is always good and the events they host are interesting. We attended a science of sex and drugs event a few years ago that had scientist weighing in on different topics. Their parking lot is pretty small but there is lots of street parking. Also dog friendly.

Google
This is a great bar. It’s got a nice, relaxed atmosphere and their house-beers are good. If you don’t like beer, this may not be the place for you, but if you do, this is a great, relaxed place to have a few drinks, play some corn hole and hang out with friends. There’s also occasionally some food trucks on the property which are nice!

Yelp
True to their name, they're a pretty low key brewery hidden away in a neighborhood and I was surprised to find out they've been there for some while now! I don't drink much beer nowadays so it's always a treat to get one when I do and their grapefruit IPA was pretty tasty and packed a little punch too which was nice. I'm not sure what the food situation is there usually but the night we were there they had a pop-up gumbo vendor. The only negative was that on the day I was there, there was just so much mud everywhere. I know it was a rainy day but given that they are an outdoor place, they they probably need more gravel or something to keep the mud at bay. I'm not sure what's going on next door and whether that's part of their property but it looked like some construction was going on so the mud from there was all on the sidewalk too so it was just a little messy that night. They do have a covered tent and a heater however.

Yelp
Great vibe to match the great beer! Fantastic selection and very low key. Nice patio area for outdoor dining and drinking. Helpful service and wonderful beer!

Yelp
Trivia: What large metal object is located next to the corn hole boards? (Hint, it represents their namesake). Service was a little odd. And by odd, I mean uninterested. Not helpful. Not interested in answering questions. Very matter-o-fact. The service was almost rendered moot by the Biergarten. It was amazing. So much seating and so many cool trees providing shade and a delightfully relaxing ambiance. It's almost possible to forget you are so close to busy roads and traffic (which you can still hear). The beer was above average. I wasn't blown away, but I wasn't unhappy. It felt like I was drinking something that was purposefully put together. That it had thought AND brewing experience behind it. I think I might have found a beer that better suited my personal tastes, but again, the service was very uninterested. When I prodded with questions, the answers were simple, vague, quiet. It was weird. Food was being set up while we were there. It looked like it was going to be a winner, but we were on our way before they officially began serving. Maybe next time!

Yelp
I love this little spot! I come here a lot now for trivia and always have a good time. The trivia is fun and quick and they have added prizes for best dressed, which I think is unique and so fun! They don't have a super extensive selection, but they do have a good variety. My favorite is probably the Radar Love (Hefewizen), but there is also a raspberry, some IPAs and Porters . . . something for all the beer lovers in your life! They have special releases as well. They have food vendors often, but you can also BYO-food. Dog friendly! Parking lot is small, but there is plenty of street parking and never an issue. It is all outdoors, but they have some tents up and heat lamps now. As long as you're dressed for the weather you should be comfortable. Come check this place out and grab some yummy draft or to go beers!

Bryan B.

Yelp
I stopped by for a quick beer or two, and this was a nice little stop. The weather was nice, and it was a good place to relax. The beer I had was very good, and they had plenty of options.

Yelp
Absolutely loved this place! The large beer selection was great. I tried a few different beers and loved them all. The atmosphere is incredible with all of their outdoor picnic tables and group seatings. Unique little spot!

Yelp
When we come to this area this is a great brewery with wonderful tasty beer. We always leave with a handful of beer

Yelp
Such an awesome little micro brewery hidden near Montrose area. Very small area to sit inside so if you go, it would be a good idea to go on a nice day. Pretty open outdoor area with picnic tables. There was only one heated lamp outside when we went but is didn't give off too much heat when lit. Not a huge variety of beer but the ones that they do offer are pretty awesome. Great pictures with their giant radar!
google avatar

Yelp
Tucked into a neighborhood and under the cover of string-lights on trees, Under the Radar is truly thriving under the radar. We loved everything about this brewery. We were on vacation and a storm had knocked out power to most of Houston, but this brewery was one of the lucky ones not significantly impacted. And thank goodness it wasn't impacted. We loved the staff (super welcoming), the beer (west coast IPA, kolsch), the seating options (plenty, under tent or trees), and the vibes (casual, family friendly, fun) - couldn't have asked for a better experience. We will be coming back ASAP! Don't change a thing, Under the Radar Brewery.

Yelp
I'm not usually one for breweries, but I love this spot! It has a local, neighborhood vibe, and the beer is great. But wait! That's not all-- the real sleeper here is the kombucha, which really kicks better than any other bottled or tap kombucha I've had in town. It has a great flavor profile that is really quite hard to put into words--slightly gingery, fruity, tangy? Anyway, this place is great to visit and hang out. Even if you don't like beer, the kombucha is great. I also love that there's a running club here on Thursdays--nice way to create a community!

Yelp
Great beer. Cool people hanging out there. Corn-hole, board games, trivia night. Oh yeah, did I mention great beer?!? As far as micro breweries go this place is a dive. It is a dive in the best way. Nothing pretentious about UTR. Ask the guys about their business and they will chat your ear off. Ask them about their process and they might enlist you to help. Go now! Drink beer! Have a blast!!!
google avatar

Carolyn S.

Yelp
Missing our neighborhood brewery! This is a great family-friendly spot for those looking to relax and enjoy the outdoors. They often have food trucks and plenty of beers on tap for everyone to enjoy.
google avatar

Art D.

Yelp
I visited on a weekday and it was not bad. The parking is limited so I can see where on a weekend you may want to ride share or walk if you live near by. The beer is good, seems to mostly if not all local. Lots of screens and corn hole to keep you company. It is an outdoor setting so dress cool.
google avatar

Roma B.

Yelp
A hidden gem! Easy to pass when driving by. Plenty of outdoor seating (covered and uncovered). They even have a food truck in the corner. Parking is a bit hard as it's mostly street parking. Lots of unique beer options to choose from! Ordered the Raspberry Love and absolutely loved it! It was very light and easy to drink. Chill spot to hang out with friends.
google avatar

Ricardo A.

Yelp
Don't come here in the cold without a warm outfit or something light during the summer. This location is all outdoors. With that said, if you come here and get upset for not knowing it's outdoors, it's on you. I came here during the winter and got upset for being cold. I then drank 3 beers back to back. I then felt warm. Then drank 3 more of their beers. Warmth and cold is just a state of drunk mind.

Yelp
Just the perfect 'under the trees' cool summer Friends trivia night with $4 pint size brew. As good as it gets ?...definitely. Its a totally casual place to hang out, chat and play some games while chilling out. Cannot think of a better setting for a trivia night on Friends, especially since it was midweek. They have some great beer samplers, some fountain drinks for the non alcoholics or the designated drivers, and ofcourse the regular pint size glasses. They don't serve food, but did have a Food Truck on the grounds- which incidentally was my only disappointment- complete non-availability of anything vegetarian on that truck! Guys please get a regular vendor who serves atleast one vegan/vegetarian option. You know we are growing in numbers, don't you ? Tips : They have Bingo and various trivia nights like How I met your mother and so on. Their schedule is on the website and on facebook. Worth being checked out. If nothing else, then to taste their unique beer flavors.

Yelp
This my second trip to the place. First was on a beer bus so I couldn't adequately gauge my experience. Not every beer is a winner, but they have some great ones. I especially liked the marzen and their Griswold Family Porter. The only reason they lose a star is because the heat. They really can't help it, but the few fans can't tame the texas heat. Great food trucks and some greats beers to choose. I will be coming back. * edit, gave them 5 STARS because the huge flight glasses!
google avatar

Yelp
This place feels like home. I'm there almost as much as I am at home! The beer is delicious, the people are friendly, and the atmosphere is so calm for being so close to downtown. Love this place.
google avatar

Jim D.

Yelp
Back in May I had the best ever pale ale here. I can't remember the name and it doesn't matter because they changed the whole menu. Maybe not everyone agreed with my assessment. It's a great family and community atmosphere.
google avatar

Pamela Z.

Yelp
I enjoy going to this brewery, they have a lot of outdoor seating and atmosphere is nice. Beers taste pretty good, though aren't always true to their style (ex. Not all their IPAs taste like a true IPA). Looks like they are trying to put some sort of outdoor games in the yard but maybe not completed yet? Music seemed to be primarily punk rock when I was there, which isn't really my cup of tea but I don't hold it against them. Parking is abundant and they have a happy hour until 7pm. TVs available outside if you're trying to watch sports. No indoor seating, but plenty of shade outside. They often have a food truck, but it's not always there. If you're starving and the German food truck is fine, there is a really good taco truck 1 block away.
google avatar

Courtney P.

Yelp
They charged me three times for one item. I did Apple Pay but their system didn't work so I used my card. I got home and saw three charges. If your Apple Pay system doesn't work, just tell me. Now I have to call my bank and report charges on Apple Pay.

Yelp
Great atmosphere, great beers. Parking lot is a bit snug but tons on on street parking! Generous flights

Yelp
Great brewery in midtown Houston! It's really on the outer midtown. We found this brewery by accident when turning around to find parking for a nearby bar. We were pleasantly surprised!! They have a dedicated food truck that I have not ordered from (yet!). First visit: we came on a Saturday. The man (I think the owner) was super nice and funny and the woman pouring beer was new but very great to interact with! It was a fundraiser for "ATF/Assist the Officer". We paid a few extra bucks and got a pint glass with under the radar logo and ATF logo and four beer tokens. We stop by as often as possible when in the neighborhood.
google avatar

Minh L.

Yelp
I came here for the first time to watch the first game of the World Series. I got there at 715pm, thinking I wouldn't find parking or get a table, both of which I was totally wrong. There was plenty of street parking and plenty of open tables with TVs along the walls. It's outdoor seating with cute string lights, and a lot of patrons brought their dogs. Overall a very chill environment. Food was limited to one food truck (Hawgin' Time). So the cool thing is that they have a variety of unique beers on tap, and on Tuesday you literally roll a dice to see how much you pay per pint of beer. Therefore, the most you'll pay is $6, and the least you'll pay is $1. Knowing my luck, I'd probably roll a 13! Ok, but not really...I rolled a 3 and ended up paying $3 for my pint of Apple Cider Kombucha. First of all, this is probably the biggest win I've had in my life, and second of all, don't judge me for ordering Kombucha at a brewery. I freakin' loved my drink. It was lightly sweetened, very apple cider-y, tart and carbonated. I don't care what you say, I'm coming back and getting it again, even if I do end up rolling a 13. My sister ordered the flight of beers, consisting of 5 different cups that you can choose to order from the board. She got it on a Groupon deal for $16, which also came with a souvenir cup and a token for a free pint of beer. So all in all, I enjoyed my visit very much, even thought the Astros lost this game. Will definitely be back!
google avatar

Melissa B.

Yelp
Beer isn't really my thing, but their kombucha is delicious! The outdoor space isn't come covered, so the tables are always a good option.
google avatar

Jenny D.

Yelp
Really fun local brewery located in the center of town. The best part are all the games, both board games and organized games (Thur is bingo night AND a brewery sponsored running group that ends with free beer). There is a small brewery themed mini golf course. All of the games above are free, including bingo, board games, and rental of golf clubs and balls. The venue is great on a beautiful day. Little to no indoor seating, but there are heat lamps and a covered area. The beer selection is roughly 8 with a local kombucha. Both draft and bottled available. Really great vibe, and incredibly friendly staff. No food served, but they welcome outside food.
google avatar

Libby H.

Yelp
AMAZING casual outside brewery to go to on a great weather day in Houston. I came here with a Groupon (if it's still available hop on that! It's a great deal, that was one pint of beer, one flight of beer, and an under the radar glass for around $10. What a steal!! It was a great way for me to try a new brewery. And this place is great!! Amazing beers and chill outside ambiance. It's also across the block from axelrad so you can hop from one to another for a good chill Houston bar afternoon!!
google avatar

JJ S.

Yelp
This is not your typical micro brewery so get ready to expand your mind! Mini golf, board games, jazz and lounge music playing in the background. Kid approved! Dog approved! But no food, so either bring your own or enjoy the occasional food truck. The place is truly a gem in downtown Houston and is worth trying it out. Great beer! Dirty Blond, Bockaneer, Porter Authority all amazing beers. Hoppy, refreshing well minus the Porter it's more a fall/winter beer. Service is outstanding and super friendly. Superbly clean bathrooms and my favorite the music is just perfect. This is a place to go every Sunday and just chill with a good date or some good friends. It's even great to grab a book and sit to read it.
google avatar

Melanie D.

Yelp
Great selection of beers. Their kombucha was awesome also. Great low key vibe and felt like a hidden neighborhood hangout spot. We will be back soon.
google avatar

Yelp
Neat place, great beer! I dropped in after dinner for a drink and was pretty impressed with the selection given that it's a smaller brewery. I got a flight and really enjoyed the beers. My only recommendation would be to get print outs for the flights, we want to reference which beers we're drinking! The server was nice enough to write the beers in order on a receipt after a little convincing. They also do trivia which brought a lively atmosphere. I'm sad you can't get a growler but I guess that means I'll just have to drop in again. Dog friendly Outside food friendly

Yelp
Came here for a friend's birthday get together and definitely enjoyed myself. First, the brewery largely consists of an outdoor area, but it does have a small indoor bar as well (where you actually order the beer). The outside area was pretty chill - I think this brewery is still a little bit unknown (hence the name, I guess), so there weren't too many people around. That being said, as the night went on, the crowd picked up. The outside area is pretty perfect for having your own little events - for example, there was a group of people who were hitting a birthday piñata hung up on a tree. The bar was also running a bingo night, and they had loads of board games to play (as well as a giant game of Jenga!). The beer was tasty. Not the absolute best brewery I've been to, but I was pretty happy with the selection and the quality. Food-wise, there are a number of restaurants in the area (Luigi's, Axelrad, a vegan place, and probably some others I'm forgetting), but the only food available in the immediate vicinity was a guy grilling steaks for something like $16 or $18 a person. You did get a nice large New York strip for that price, along with a "vegetable and potato medley" (which was basically just asparagus and potatoes), but it wasn't the best steak I've ever had or anything. Overall, I would definitely come back here!

Yelp
I am a big craft beer person so I had a great time at this 8 months old brewery. Located in not so crowded area, this place is perfect if you just want to have a chill time, nothing crazy and talk with your friends. They had more than two porters on tap, which is a winning situation for me because I love dark beers. My favorite was the chocolate milk stout, it's greatly flavored- had nice balance of everything. Me and my date decided to get a flight so we could taste five different beers and all the ones we got were great. Loved the small batches they had. Our bartender was super friendly and nice. We had a great conversation with him, he was very knowledgeable. They also have a German food truck parked right next to them. I wasn't hungry enough to try anything from there but I heard the curry brat is delicious! I will definitely recommend this place to craft beer lovers.
google avatar

Katelyn T.

Yelp
Literally the best beer in Houston. I've been to plenty of other breweries in the city and feel an obligation to love those places based off of their reputation rather than their actual beer. Then I found Under the Radar. This place deserves ALL the hype - I haven't tried a single beer I don't like or LOVE. This is the only place I trust getting a random flight and actually wanting to drink each beer. Their kolsch, hefe, raspberry hefe, blonde, milk stout are all EXCEPTIONAL, to name a few! Go here, you won't be disappointed. Staff are always friendly. I used to come almost every week pre-COVID and now I go to fill up the occasional growler and enjoy at home. If you want to safely get out of the house, the outside seating is great for social distancing too!
google avatar

Karen G.

Yelp
The outside area is lovely , lots of table choices and choices of sun or shade . There were yard games. Dudes in the lot next door we're having a crayfish boil. The beer selections were wide and varied. None of the beer was super great but the place definitely made up for it with a pleasant atmosphere
google avatar

Dan A.

Yelp
This place is brewing some very good beers. The Radar Love Kellerweis is fantastic. Huge outdoor patio with overhead tent protection is nice. Bartender was cool and friendly. Highly recommended.
google avatar

Keri B.

Yelp
Very comfy and green outdoor area and a great selection of beers with generous portions for the flights. Definitely a great brewery to enjoy cold beer one afternoon

Yelp
Looking for a brewery that's under the radar? Well, I found it! I came in with some friends to celebrate a birthday. The owners were so nice and gave us a tour. This is a small brewery. They're pretty new. Only 2 years old. It's ran basically out of an oversized garage. The beer that I had was the farmhouse ale/saison. It was refreshing!...and then I realized potent, with 7.8% alcohol. They have a flight of five 4 oz glasses for a little over $10. I would like to try this next time, but I had to pace myself to ensure I could survive the entire night of bar/brewery hopping. There is a lot of outdoor seating with big benches and umbrellas to sit at. It is dog friendly too. This place definitely has a nice backyard vibe going.
google avatar

Adelyn T.

Yelp
Love it here! Every beer I've had is great. They also have mini golf and tv screens to watch the Astros games on! Cute little hidden gem.
google avatar

Tiffany J.

Yelp
I finally went to Under the Radar yesterday for Golden Girls trivia night (which was loads of fun)! They normally have trivia on Wednesday nights, but they are closed today for the 4th. On trivia night, they do $3 pints! Can't beat that! This place is mostly outdoors, though they do have a small indoor area. Some of the tables have giant umbrellas (which was great last night when it started raining). They also have a big tent near the food truck. The tables with the umbrellas are also next to fans which was helpful to keep us cool and keep the bugs away. The beer was good. I had the Dirty Blonde and another one whose name I can't recall. They have a decent selection of beers. There's a small lot out front but for the most part, it's street parking. Also they have gender neutral restrooms which is a bonus! This place is great! I just wish they had a different food truck (I'm not a fan of German food).

Yelp
Love this newer brewery in town! I joined a few friends while visiting Houston for the weekend after a work trip. I consider myself a craft beer snob so of course i drug my friends here. It was a WARM day in Houston and this made me nervous seeing the brewery mostly being outside. Luckily there were some large trees for shady coverage and the beer was deliciously cold. We brought some snacks but were happy to see a food truck parked next door. The lot has TONS of space for a dozen picnics tables, as well as room for yard games. The beer selection had a variety of types of beer so it catered to everyone's tastes in my group. The bathroom was clean and the staff were very nice. You can have children's birthday parties here, bring your doggos, and even join trivia nights for prizes! I think my favorite aspect of the brewery was the VAST amount of board games to choose from. It went beyond your typical Jenga and checkers to the good stuff like Catan and Ticket to Ride. My friends continue to visit this brewery since that visit I made. Parking is tough and the neighborhood is a little weird -- other than that -- great place to hang!
google avatar

Julienne P.

Yelp
Solid bar. Tried the 2 different blondes. Staff is friendly. They didn't sell food, but I made a short 3 min walk to the taco truck on the other wide of the block and brought it back. Delicious combo with a cold beer. #cheerstodrinksandeats
google avatar

David D.

Yelp
Friendly place with excellent brews. Neighborhood is a mix of new and just a bit sketchy. Folks on both side of the bar were welcoming and warm. 11 brews on tap on the day we visited. $12 for 5-generous samples to help you get acquainted... Small tasting room / bar is carved out of the production area, and there is a good sized beer garden with tables, cornhole and large format Jenga. I understand there is often a food truck, but none when we visited... food options within mile, though, including a good Vietnamese place that does takeout. Beers were solid across a wide range of styles. Particularly good IPA.
google avatar

Antonio H.

Yelp
I love the environment of this brewery. I felt like I was in my backyard chilling. I got the flight which comes with four drinks. This brewery has a lot of IPA. One of the four drinks I got was the Milkshake IPA which was my favorite. I got a pretty good buzz after finishing my flight. This place is a few minutes walking distance from axelrad which I went after to chill on their hammock.
google avatar

Beatriz M.

Yelp
One of the few places open during this time. Great customer service, Rhonna was awesome. Patio was spaced out and was very practicing social distancing.
google avatar

Tim B.

Yelp
Sweet place - excellent outdoor set up with nice benches and heat lamps. Solid brews and great variety for the size: german, american, and belgians styles all done pretty well. not a bad drive from the airport, a great addition to the growing beer scene in Houston. I dig the location: up and coming neighborhood close enough to downtown to feel close but still far enough to feel extra relaxed. Flawless friendly service. dogs welcome. will have to try them brawts next time

Brian W.

Yelp
The west coast IPA and double IPA were ok. No food though, and their social media was wrong about both a running group and the presence of a food truck, the latter of which I was attempting to partake in.

Kenneth S.

Yelp
Service was atrocious. Been here before and it had a fun and friendly vibe. This time we felt like we were putting the bar tender out by being there. No curtesy or friendly banter you expect at a brewery. We won't be back.
google avatar

Leslie W.

Yelp
Get the flight. Just do. Every beer on their menu plus the seasonals for $16. And these are not tiny little pours. They are nice little glasses. Or you can do $15 for three beers and a take home glass. But flights rock here! I won't tell you which beers you'll like. But I liked their midtown bock and porter. Very clean unisex bathrooms. Super friendly staff. Small parking lot that you really have to look for to find but there is street parking. Lots of folks rode their bikes over. Dog and kid friendly patio with a couple TVs and several picnic tables. There are some fans for the hot days. It's still small and unassuming. But the beers are really good and the staff really seemed to care that we were having a good time. Closed Mon and Tues and they don't open until 4 Wed, Thurs and Fri. So that means I likely won't be back for a while. But they open at 10am on Sat...so maybe I will because most breweries don't offer the super flights at 10am!
