The Gayest Dish on the Menu, According to 10 Queer-Owned Restaurants | Eater

"An iced lavender oat milk latte with salted cold foam embodies the cafe’s queer-curated supply chain and aesthetic: it uses Pink House Alchemy lavender syrup and Queer Wave Espresso, matches the shop’s logo, and includes glitter for extra sparkle. The drink signals intentional support for queer-owned producers while being bright, floral, and visually joyful." - Jaya Saxena

Nice neighborhood coffee shop. The latte was very good and they have various egg & cheese sandwiches. When I went only a window on 12th was open, but service was fast and pleasant. There's a bench right there and it was nice enough to sit outside. While I was there several people from the neighborhood came by for coffee, 5 or 6 of them walking dogs. It's apparently a popular place. There's a parking lot for the Madison Square businesses adjacent to the coffee shop which was nearly empty when I arrived. It was nearly full a half hour later.

Google
My rating is based on my first experience with this little walk up cafe. There is no seating. You order at the window and the service is friendly. The food is made to order so be patient- it’s worth the wait. I had the egg n cheese on an everything bagel (baked in house) and it was outstanding. As a NY bagel lover I was not disappointed in this morning staple. Looking forward to going back to try out more menu items. If you are looking for it on maps it’s confusing. The walk up window on Madison near 12th and right next to Blue Pan Pizza.

Under the Umbrella, their staff, and owner Lisa offer really good drinks, food, and customer service. They welcome dogs and humans alike, and they are truly a hospitable and great breakfast-lunch spot. Great place to meet neighbors as well.

Google
Breakfast sandwiches were so good! My wife and I got the bacon pesto and sausage, egg, and cheese. Croissants were soft and buttery. Coffee is good too! We found our new favorite breakfast spot!

Google
I went here 6/13 around 2:30pm and was disappointed in how the male barista acted. He told me to have a good day, which on the surface sounds nice, but he said it in such an aggressive way it almost felt violent. I really doubt he would have spoken to another man in that way, and I can’t help but wonder if he just felt contempt about being a male in a service role to a female. But you know what - whatever the reason I don’t need to tolerate being talked to in an aggressive tone, and I wouldn’t feel comfortable coming back. All of the female baristas have always been kind, but this guy ruined it for me.

Google
A cozy neighborhood spot that is so good I legitimately am afraid of too many people finding it. However, they deserve all the business in the world. Vote with your dollar, support the best coffee shop in town.

Cameron Hardman

Google
I was looking for a good spot for a quick breakfast with gluten free bread. Their GF toast was very good and they're very open to customizing the sandwiches. Very friendly service too

Google
I don't give many reviews, but this is legitimately one of my most favorite coffee shops. I get a coffee every day & do my best to support small businesses. I like UTU because: 1)they use Pablos Coffee (another one of my favorites) 2)they have 2 of my favorite syrups that most shops don't 3)they have some of the yummiest homemade foods/goods. *Best lemon bars I've ever had!!! (Not too sweet or bitter. Not a typical lemon bar & twice the size of most). I wish there was more outdoor seating (outdoor only establishment, but there is 1 bench at least while you wait) & a trash can closer by, but these things don't take away from the service or experience. The staff & other customers are always friendly too. Hopefully they'll have punch cards or something soon because I've been coming every day lately. Lol. I also wish they offered an even bigger size for iced drinks because I find myself drinking my Americano much faster than I usually do. Ha. Thank you UTU!!! 🙏💗🤤💖😇💝😎❣💎🌹

Yelp
Steady stream of peeps and dogs getting their morning drinks to go. I sipped my dirty chai and son had an Oregon chai. We sat a bit on a bench before heading for a nice neighborhood walk. Service ok.
google avatar

Yelp
Friendly; owner works on staff; feels good to support a local small business in my neighborhood. It's pricey. I know it's not fair to compare to a giant corporation that has billions of dollars at their disposal and that can buy in bulk. But it was $3 more than my usual order at the big corporation. I'll definitely still shop here as a nice treat for myself.

Yelp
Since my original review these folks have moved across the street to the north side of 12th Avenue into a much smaller space. They are no longer a bakery/restaurant, but operate solely as a take-out window. You cannot go inside and there is no seating. The drinks menu includes coffee, espresso drinks, tea, chai, cocoa, and agua frescas. There are breakfast sandwiches on a bagel or a croissant, breakfast burritos, half a dozen pastry choices, and some daily varieties of deli sandwiches. There is absolutely no shelter from the weather, so you bake in the sun, get wet, or freeze while waiting in line. An awning or some sort of pergola would be a nice addition to the building. This is a busy intersection, so street parking is limited. There is an equally busy parking lot just west of the shop. This place is busy at breakfast time. You can order in advance by telephone or by using the Web site. Telephone may be a better option as they don't seem to monitor the incoming Web orders very well. You still need to wait your turn in line to pick up an order. I'm not a huge fan of the baked items here. The croissants have been regularly overbaked for my taste and are crumbly and dry. Other pastries I've tried have been average. The breakfast sandwiches are OK--nothing special. Really more of a coffee shop these days.

Yelp
Stopped by here after I saw a line for the window and decided to give it a try. I got one of the specials on the board: Vanilla rose matcha. I got it half sweetened and it was still really good. They moved pretty fast when I went during the week. I only had to wait maybe couple of minutes. Will come back to try the coffee next time.

Yelp
Anything but under an umbrella So hot out with no seats chairs or umbrellas to sit or stand under. Breakfast & coffee was quick and good but you'll only find shade under a tree while you wait. Tables chairs and an umbrella would be great for your customers!

Yelp
Cute little place with great personality. Good coffee and friendly service. They even gave my daughter a free burrito as they had an extra. Bonus Baby!
google avatar

Eilen S.

Yelp
Slowly has become one of my favorite breakfast spots. Ideal place to pick up breakfast on a sunny day since it's basically a pick up window so you will be standing outside.. and sometimes there is a line and a wait to grab the food but it does move quickly. They run out of burritos pretty often (I have actually never been able to snag one!) but my go to is a bacon, egg and cheese on a croissant. It's big enough for two in my opinion if you don't have a big appetite. Their coffee is also solid. They have summer specialty flavors and such if you're feeling adventurous!

Libby M.

Yelp
Edit to add that on days when the weather is very bad, you can come inside to order and wait!
google avatar

Breaunna O.

Yelp
I think this place is a bit on the pricey side, but their breakfast sandwiches and their pastries are definitely worth it! We got two egg and cheese croissants (BEST I HAVE EVER HAD BY THE WAY! ), two small coffees (one hot, one iced: The hot had a bit more flavor, but both were not very memorable), and a lemon bar (OMG! MUST TRY!) and we paid almost $40.) This place is cute, you walk up to the window and order and there is a bench right outside where you can sit, wait, enjoy your coffee, and soak in the beautiful day if the weather permits. This place can get busy, so be prepaid to wait in a small line.
google avatar

Yelp
This is a great little spot in the area!! I love their OMG matcha and their breakfast burritos. The only thing I'd have to say about this place is that I ordered a veggie burrito today but was given a burrito with sausage. I unknowingly ate half of it right away before looking down and seeing pieces of meat inside. I gave the rest to my boyfriend because I was a bit saddened initially, but I called them and they said they'd process a refund for me! I'd still recommend Under the Umbrella to others -- just double check if you got the right order first!!

Yelp
The wonderfully flaky croissant with ham and cheese is a total bliss on this day. Good coffee.

Allie B.

Yelp
I walk here all the time and it's one of the only coffee shop I go to that never misses. Love the cinnamon latte!
google avatar

Chelsea Y.

Yelp
Love their coffee, breakfast sandwiches and pastries. Never had anything bad here! So many flavor options for coffee syrup, too. We love to come here and grab stuff to go for a breakfast picnic at Cheesman park, as this is a walk up window without seating options.
google avatar

Kelli H.

Yelp
Found this great little walk-up shop while visiting Denver. Delicious bagels made in house. Loved the sausage, egg and cheese bagel. Plus there's a little jar of dog treats at the window.
google avatar

Aylin R.

Yelp
This is the cutest local shop ever! They bake everything fresh in house every morning and they are so friendly with everyone, I was visiting but they had several locals that were regulars swing by while I waited for my food. The food was delicious and exactly what I wanted for a quick breakfast to go type of deal. I've also never had a golden latte and it was absolutely delicious I'll be ordering more of those from every coffee shop I go to from now on

Matt G.

Yelp
Food is good and people are nice, but they lack the capacity to handle both in person and online orders. They require online customers to wait in the long in person line in order to pick up orders, which largely negates the purpose of ordering online and results in cold food.
google avatar

Kayla H.

Yelp
Saw the reviews about the croissant BEC and had to try. It seemed pricey at first, but the portion was worth it! It was delicious. I will definitely be coming back when I'm in town. Of course I also had to try an iced mocha. Good info to know: there is no seating, just a walk up window.
google avatar

Moira H.

Yelp
I visited for the first time today, and this is such a sweet little café! The staff were so friendly and complimented my sweater (which made my day). The coffee was delicious and the chocolate croissant warmed up was incredible. Will definitely be back!!

Jonathan M.

Yelp
Unclear how many things they could have gotten wrong with my order. So many better places in the neighborhood to spend money. Wrong bagel. not toasted (as per asked), not inside scooped out (the person at the counter actually said they didn't have an ice-cream scooper). Asked for hot sauce - none!

Steven B.

Yelp
Food was amazing!! The service was absolutely awesome! The owner came out and greeted us as we ordered. The food was to die for! Loved it!

Yelp
I like patronizing a local business. Under the Umbrella is friendly and fast. Their breakfast burrito is one of the best in town, in my opinion. I like to stop in and eat my breakfast sandwich outside on the sidewalk tables. There are just a few stools inside (the old reviews, which talk about working for hours here, describe the former location across the street). They serve Pablo's coffee if you're looking for caffeine with a kick. They take care of their regulars, I've noticed, and that's cool. They know what folks order and get it ready before they have to say a word. I've not tried the take-out dinners they offer, but I want to. I like that they have a take-and-bake option.

Steven C.

Yelp
Great Breakfast Burrito! Full of egg and well cooked bacon, and the salsa was phenomenal! The banana bread and the croissant were also very tasty. I also got an iced latte and I'd say it was standard. Lastly the service was great and the employees were super friendly! I only wish they had tables or a place to sit.

Yelp
We finally got around to making it here in time to try one of the vegetarian croissant breakfast sandwiches. Quite delicious - the black pepper definitely stood out making it a bit spicy. The sandwiches were a little on the oily side, which I wasn't expecting, but it was good nonetheless. We got another chocolate croissant while we were here because it was so amazing last time. I was offered sweet or spicy for the chai and I asked if it was possible to make it half & half - the answer was yes!
google avatar

Yelp
Under the Umbrella has been in the neighborhood for a long time, and ever since their move I've actually come to love them even more. Small and mighty - they have delicious pastry, great coffee, and even do weekly dinners that you can pickup - and they are all done well! I've been going to them for years since they are just a block away from my house, so I'm not sure how it's taken me so long to write a review! Since the pandemic, this has been one of my go-to coffee spots. This morning, my husband and I came and they didn't have their breakfast burritos quite ready yet, so I ordered a bagel sandwich. As we were waiting for that sandwich, the burritos became ready and they were SO nice, and gave us one on the house. Great neighbors to have!
google avatar

Emily K.

Yelp
This place is quick and high-quality. The staff is very kind. It's one of those places that really makes you feel a part of a special community. The y of course have great morning coffee drinks but also have easy grab-n-go breakfast and lunch options. The breakfast burritos are popular and sometimes sell out. They usually have dog treats. They will give you a "puppiccino" if you ask - for a child or a dog!

Yelp
This is such an unassuming place that if my wife didn't want to come here I probably would have walked right past it. As always, I was excited to try something new and excited for the idea that maybe we'd find a new breakfast spot to go to. Of course, during the pandemic, the idea was to get something to go and walk over to City Park and have a breakfast picnic. My gut feeling was to go with the fresh granola with whole milk and I ended up just going with it. My wife got a burrito and we got a chocolate croissant for my toddler. Not only was the price for the granola reasonable but it was one of my favorite granolas. I know it's very subjective of what makes a good granola but this one is the one for me - very fresh, no spices overwhelming it, very balanced, and no random nut pieces. I was so happy. Marry that with the amazing ice latte I ordered and this was the perfect breakfast at the park. I had a taste of my wife's burrito and it was good but probably more than I wanted that day. My wife made me try the croissant and this might have been the most impressive item we got. I know it sounds weird but so many places don't get this right and sometimes it's soggy or lacking much filling. This one was so good - fresh, flaky, lots of filling, and the perfect balance of what you'd want. We will be back again soon and probably again after that! ;)

Yelp
This place's dinning area is closed. Window service only. Not a great work from home spot...

Erica M.

Yelp
This was 2 blocks from our Airbnb so we walked here every morning! Coffee 10/10 and by day 2 the person taking orders already knew us, the burritos and pastries are also just as good! Super friendly and can definitely tell it's the surrounding neighborhoods coffee shop cause they know everyone and their dog (literally) lol check it out if you're in the area!

Martin M.

Yelp
If the 6 lb. 8 oz. baby Jesus turned into a burrito and made its own in-house salsa then this is the place where the rapture would happen. We've been going to this hidden gem for years and luckily it's very close in walking distance to our house. They seriously have the very best wings in Denver. I really also like all of their Agua Fresca and custom ice tea drinks. The owners and their staff are also very friendly, accommodating, and it's always great to support small businesses in the area. Especially if they make food and drinks as good as they do. Ever since they made the new location their coffee and food quality has been amazing.

Yelp
Favorite neighborhood spot! My wife and I have enjoyed many breakfasts and lunches made by UTU over the years. Get the bacon/egg/cheese on an everything bagel. Get a raspberry/cream cheese croissant. Get any of the grab-n-go lunch sandwiches. Get the lemon bar. Get the cappuccino. Get any of their teas, iced or hot. My wife and I like to ride our bikes up to their super convenient window. We order the Albuquerque Turkey sandwich to split, extra chips, and two of their amazing iced herbal teas. We bike the food over to Little Cheeseman for a picnic. We're moving to the East coast soon and we'll miss UTU a lot. Thanks for everything you've added to our experience of this beloved neighborhood, Kat & Jyll.

Yelp
Wanted a nice sit down pause after rough tests at National Jewish Hospital. Beautiful day. Chose this after reading reviews and looking at website. Window service only. Uninterested employee even when I said I'd not been here before. Zero interaction just pointing at the case, quickly walked away. I have damage to my vocal cords and had to yell over the music to get them to return. I Asked about tea and employee pointed at the menu taped up on window. Quickly Walked away again. Tea not listed on general menu. I asked AGAIN about tea and they now gave me a tea menu, quickly walking away. No tables outside. Just one bench. And strangers wanted to share. No napkin. Left with an overly sweet, greasy GF stale coffee cake and sitting in my car. Tea is all lavender with no nuances the menu described. I enjoy lavender but this not at all like described with way too much lavender. Should have just stayed at National Jewish cafeteria. Waste of money, time, and not a place to self care when could be so simple-a napkin, "homemade"pastry that has flavor and a couple of tables.

Yelp
I've been here a few times when going to the nearby school. They are always friendly and have yummy coffee and pastries. Their coffee cake is one of my favs! They are now serving some other food items but I haven't gotten the chance to try any yet. They give an educator discount and also have a frequent customer rewards program called Perka. I love both of those things! They have good WiFi and it is a great space to get work done. Excited to have them in this neighborhood! The only downside is that they don't have any sort of shutters and the afternoon sun can be extremely intense. I love the natural light that comes through their huge windows but sadly had to leave the last time I was there because I couldn't find an open space that was shielded from the very bright and hot Colorado sun.

Parker B.

Yelp
The bacon egg and cheese croissant is the BEST breakfast sandwich I've ever had in my life. I drive 20 minutes just to go get one when I can. Esther and Alex made it worth the trip too, 10/10 service!!
google avatar

Wendy L.

Yelp
I stopped in at 2:50pm today and picked up a bacon breakfast burrito ($7.02 including tax) to go. It was smaller than I expected and perfectly average taste wise. Therefore I felt it was a little overpriced, but hey, support local! Quick service with window-side pickup right along the sidewalk, efficient! I'll give it another try for sure.
google avatar

Peter M.

Yelp
I can't believe I live so close to such a charming place, and it took me this long to check it out! Really good bites, and when I stopped in they had a fantastic violin / guitar combo playing liver music. A real treat, so if you are in the neighborhood, check it out!
google avatar

Bruce G.

Yelp
Highly recommend. UTU has delicious baked goods (especially croissants) and breakfast sandwiches. Today I had the bacon, egg, Swiss, and pesto on a buttery croissant. They also have pretty solid bagels and coffees. For COVID times they have converted to an "order at the window" model so my wife and I stop by most weekends for sammies and iced coffees.
google avatar

Heather S.

Yelp
This is a must stop if you are in the neighborhood. Many of hours have been spent here studying, catching up with friends, drinking my favorite (ever) coffee, and stuffing my gullet with their delectable collection of foods and pastries! The people watching is wonderful as well. Plop down outside with your dog and enjoy the sounds, people bustling and the friendlies. The atmosphere is welcoming and cozy, clean and unique. If you are hungry, try a breakfast sandwich on a croissant (always)! Maybe get that breakfast burrito with green chili! Or be real bad and go straight for dessert. No one is judging. Yummmmmm, going there in an hour because writing about it makes me salivate. Need... Coffee... P.s. I have been coming here since 2011 and it is consistently wonderful, welcoming, and delicious.

Yelp
I have to admit I was drawn in by the name. It sounded like a cute place so I came to check it out. That and I wanted to go to the bakery next door to get some cake. I ordered drip coffee and a bacon pesto breakfast sandwich. Coffee was a bit on the sour side and too dilute for my taste. Sandwich was edible but not great. The ciabatta bread was not toasted uniformly with part of it was crispy and warm and part of it completely untoasted. Don't be seduced by the cute name like I was....

Yelp
The Time has come. Under the Umbrella just reopened in a separate section of the Capitol Heights Pharmacy at 12th & Madison. Come welcome Jyll and Devon back to our neighborhood by getting coffee and a delicious baked item. Or how about the most tasty breakfast burrito ever. Check out their new digs with a beautiful wood ceiling! Don't forget a fantastic lemon bar, blueberry bar or my fav, The Magic Bar
google avatar

Yelp
Love Under the Umbrella. So glad to have her back in our neck of the woods. Had a hummus w/cut veggies and some bread the other night for dinner. Yum. Just what I needed.

Kyle H.

Yelp
The bacon, egg and cheese on an everything bagel is the best breakfast in town! Thanks, Jill!

Yelp
Well...my first official Denver resident review! I'll be honest I thought it would have been a bar or restaurant but coffee it is. My neighbor suggested this place as its close to our new home and it's her go-to coffee spot. Decor - the place feels a little unfinished. Not like bad but that's it's missing a cozy component. There are couches and other seating but it's missing some warmth to me. The space is ample for a coffee shop and definitely has all that you need to enjoy brew. There is a lot of outdoor seating shared between a few places and it's wonderful. Coffee - we each got a latte. It was pretty standard. I like my latte's a little stringers but that's just a preference no reflection on any coffee shop. Overall - I would return given the great location for me and that the fact that I prefer to support local small businesses.

Yelp
Under the Umbrella Is an urban term used in reference to being gay- I found myself here for my love of coffee and a sweet tooth for pastries - My eye had caught the blueberry bar pic from a fellow yelper- (thank you) I also wanted to see how good their lattes were- I arrived to a warm environment and a friendly kid at the counter- The wide variety of fresh baked goods made my nature woman decisiveness come out- I could see why this is the spot for the many regulars- The challenge would be the 5 dollar latte and the Blueberry bar as to why I would give the 4 stars in this review - The latte was fabulous and would buy over Starbucks anytime- Of course my main reason for coming in was the blueberry bar - Which I'm calling the (besteverberry bar) Best I've ever had for the following reasons- -Fresh -texture was perfect -blueberries were solid and soft -graham crust So delish I only ate half so I can savor the rest later - I had to give this magical bar my full attention- What's not to love about this place - It's the little things that set this coffee house above the dozen others in this neighborhood- Good atmosphere, baked goods, free wifi, good coffee, friendly staff, And besteverberry bar- 10/25/16 Came back for the besteverberry bar - Yumm!!

Yelp
Totally relied on the Yelp app, and it's times like this that I'm happy I do. I was headed down Colfax to meet up with a group for brunch, and had some time to kill and thought a coffee shop was the right choice. I wouldn't have thought to pop in a few blocks, but true to the pretty little map pointer, I was led directly to a quaint coffee shop on 12th. You'll notice on the way up that there's a display window, with two big, plush chairs in it. Clearly this spot was not intended to be a coffee shop at first (or if it was, kudos on atypical design) so the format is a little weird. You walk in and to the right there's a children's area. In the main seating area you find a mixture of comfy seats and more spartan chairs. At the back counter, you belly up to make your order, and then back up on the adjacent counter to receive your selections. The display case was out of order on my visit, but I asked a few questions and settled on a chocolate croissant for my pre-brunch pregame. Of course you must accompany that with a hot chocolate in order to complete the chocolate double play. Both were nice, but I have opposing criticisms. The hot chocolate could have been a bit more chocolatey--it was a little soft. And the croissant was a little too stuffed with a deep, rich chocolate. These are really minor quibbles, however. I was still pleased, and by the time I left I was buzzing with sugar.

Yelp
Let me just say this place made on of the best BLT with Avocado I have ever had! I don't know if it was the thicker bacon, or seemingly super fresh lettuce/tomato on the sandwich..or what. All I know is, my plan to eat half the sandwich and save half for later was totally blown out the window when I tasted it. I needed it in my belly..all of it! It was so good, I went back and dropped another tip, $5, in the tip can! My coffee was great as well, as they serve Danger Monkey..which was a pleasant surprise as it is one of my favorites! I look forward to trying a latte or something next time! The atmosphere is quaint. It's a cute little shop. Staff was really nice and super accomodating. I had a full cast from shouder to fingertips where my elbow and arm was broken, and they made sure to assist me, without being asked. That goes a long way! There is a couch area, comfortable seating, as well as bar top tall seating (which I am partial to since I am tall). The only reason I didn't do a 5 star is because I only had 1 item off the menu so can't fully attest to the other items..but I have an inkling the other menu items are well above standard too! I look forward to more of their BLT's being in my mouth!

Yelp
Super delicious cold brew and DANG those sinful sausage egg and cheese croissants are something of a dream. I'm drooling just thinking about it.
google avatar

Anastasia D.

Yelp
Delicious gluten free banana bread and they use Pablo's coffee. Other gluten free options are available but I'm a sucker for banana bread. They have a pick up window only, maintaining social distancing and minimizing contact. Happy I found this spot for when I need a gluten free baked good fix.

Yelp
Met a friend here for a chill breakfast date and it was the perfect spot! They have a variety of sandwiches you can choose from. I opted for bacon pesto on a croissant, while she went for breakfast tacos. My sandwich really hit the spot! The pesto, cheese and bacon combo really worked together and the croissant was perfectly sweet and flaky. Don't miss the variety of hot sauces they have waiting for you on the counter. The green one was my favorite! To sip, I had a dry cappuccino which was delicious. Overall, it was a really pleasant experience with some friendly folks behind the counter. I've walked by countless times over the year but never thought to venture in. I ended up returning the next day just for some coffee. Can't wait to go back and I'll certainly give more of their baked goods a try!

Yelp
Love them when I moved here 10 years ago, love them still! UTU is a Congress Park treasure as many have stated. You are guaranteed to find something you love, and if you're lucky enough to the be the subject of Jyll's kindness (as you will be if she's serving you after working her a$$ off in the kitchen!) it will warm your heart for the whole week. Almond croissant, chai latte, veggie breakfast burrito, breakfast sandwich, I mean, my god, take your pick!
