Pssst ... hey buddy ... can you keep a secret? ... I don't want more people to find out about my new favorite underground (literal) bar in Vancouver.
I'm glad Underbar isn't more popular because Tommy (the bartender) and the Chef (in the kitchen) are awesome. The cocktails are strong! The pub grub is comfort! Mix in open mic, live band, trivia, or comedy nights and, geezus, how can I not be a fan?
Oh, and the prices are reasonable. I went home tipsy (or more), but didn't feel any pain in the wallet or anywhere because of the buzz. Check this out:
* Negroni ($10 - 5 stars)
Clear your palate & prepare for the night with Tommy's strong, but smooth blend of Gin, Campari, & Sweet Vermouth.
* Mule-igan Irish Mule ($10 - 5 stars)
It's like any other mule except better with Jameson Irish Whiskey plus classic Ginger Beer & Lime Juice. Top o' the evenin' to ya, Tommy boy!
* Old Fashioned ($10 - 4.5 stars)
Drink like you're in a old-school bar ... because you are ... with Bourbon, Bitters, Pure Maple Syrup, Orange Rind, and a Bada Bing Cherry for fun.
* Hazy IPA (4 stars)
It's genuinely hazy to me which brewery this refreshing IPA was from, but I enjoyed it as part of the $10 Burger & Beer deal on the night I drank it.
* Under Tai ($10 - 4 stars)
Tommy made it sound good thanks to Captain Morgan Rum, Malibu Rum, Cruzan 151 Rum, and Meyers Rum plus Grenadine, Orange Juice, and Pineapple Juice. Maybe it'd be better with more rum and less juice?
Clearly Tommy was terrific. As for the Chef, he was cooler than cool. The food wasn't all stellar. It wasn't terrible either.
* Fancy Deviled Eggs ($6 - 4.5 stars)
Loved the toppings of Pickled Red Onion, Gorgonzola Cheese Crumbles, and Warm Bacon. I really should've ordered this more than once!
* Build-your-own Grilled Cheese ($8 - 4 stars)
This is a thing at Underbar. Go with it ... get what you want. I did ... and was happy with home-style Provolone & Mozzarella ($1 extra) plus Sliced Tomatoes.
* Cheese Plate ($8 - 3.5 stars)
Sounds fancy, but it's more comfort with standard supermarket Cheeses, Stone Ground Mustard, Dried Cranberries, and basic Baguette Slices.
* The Underburger ($10 - 4 stars)
It was part of the nightly special, so besides being satisfying, the burger (& brew) was a good deal. It's a Brioche Bun loaded with a Beef Patty, Melted Swiss Cheese, Bacon, Caramelized Onions, Tomato, Lettuce, and Thousand Island Dressing.
The crowd was super casual and totally local. This is an actual neighborhood bar that the neighborhood seems to like. The vibe and atmosphere all helped raise this review to 5 stars although the biggest reasons were the strong cocktails and comfort food from Tommy and the Chef.
PS: Don't forget, pal, to keep this just our little secret, ok!
