Budding Union Kitchen Grocery Is Replacing Recently Closed Glen’s in Shaw - Eater DC

"Homegrown convenience mart Union Kitchen Grocery (UKG) is opening a third location — and its second in Shaw — later this year inside the space formerly occupied by Glen’s Garden Market (1924 Eighth Street NW). The grab-and-go eatery and nitro cold brew destination is an ideal replacement for the already-built out grocery, beer bar, and cafe carved out of the Shay development. UKG‘s original location near Union Station (538 Third Street NE) debuted in May 2015. A second one twice the size of the flagship store landed inside the Walter E. This little place has everything you need! Hot food, cold drinks, coffee, Wi-Fi, dog friendly, indoor and outdoor seating! I ordered a bacon and cheddar breakfast sandwich and it was ahhhhhmazing! Probably the best bacon I've ever had on a breakfast sandwich ever! Then i saw this massive chocolate chip cookie - and it too was soooo good! The little market has everything you need in case you forgot something or something comes up.

The office crew might have tried everything on the menu here already, and there's not a bad option we've found :) plus I like to peruse the take-away beer selections. Wines are just as fun to explore, though I haven't taken a bottle from here yet. Prices are a bit higher than other options around, but very healthy and portions are satisfying.

Solid spot to drop in for a sandwich and a coffee, breeze through for snacks, or putz around for scanning their vast beer and wine selection depending on your mood. Items are well priced and the staff is super friendly. The cafe does offer vegetarian and vegan sandwich options. The chai tasted strange. Their patio is cozy and a great place to hang out with a drink and a snack and people watch.

The staff is awesome. Today, Jamaal, Ashley, and Tyrone gave me the best service. This place is awesome and huge on service. Tyrone makes the best chicken salad sandwich in the DMV.

In a neighborhood called Ivy City is Union Kitchen, an incubator for local food and beverage companies. Union Kitchen Grocery is the store that sells their items and other local goods. This location is one of several locations and one of the largest. Located in Shaw, it doubles as a store and cafe. They sell local goods from alcohol to greeting cards to snacks. They have a grab-n-go area as well as a cafe that brews coffee and makes sandwiches, etc. If you have a sweet tooth, order their famous gooey chocolate chip cookie. It's very good! They have an area inside with tables, outlets, and wifi if you want to stay awhile. When the weather is nice, they have an outdoor patio.

I stop in to get breakfast sandwiches, and empanadas, very tasty! Customer service is so so. The prices change often, you can pay one price in the morning and another higher newly adjusted price for the same thing in the afternoon. Cute store with a cute little variety and good healthy options.

Cute convenience store selling high-quality, local essentials. The made-to-order food is exceptional. Recommend the Chicken and Brussels salad and CAPS (chicken, avocado, provolone, and sriracha mayo). Wish this was in my neighborhood!
