"OMG Hospitality has replaced Backyard Kitchen & Tap on Garnet with a third location of Union Kitchen and Tap, its gastropub and sports bar with existing outposts in Encinitas and the Gaslamp. The 6,000-square-foot space has ample seating and a main bar boasting multiple TVs that will remain open until 2 a.m. Hosting live music on Thursdays and a DJ on Fridays, the venue offers a menu that includes prime bone-in ribeye and shrimp and grits for dinner and chicken and waffles, and egg-topped flatbread for weekend brunch." - Candice Woo

We reserved a table for date night while on vacation, as we wanted to try something different than our usual place. This place was such a disappointment. It was dead for 6:30 pm, like 3 tables empty. We were sat quickly and provided menus and water. The me u was limited in options. We started with drinks, which were a draft beer and the purple haze. We then ordered some appetizers, including the Farmhouse meatballs, the wings, and Creole bbq shrimp. We were not impressed. The waiter was very slow with the drinks and water. I've had better frozen meatballs than what was served. It was warm, not even hot, which shows they were not fresh and just sitting under a lamp. The sauce for the wings was like a basic frank sauce. The shrimp still had the shells on some of them when they were supposed to be deshelled. We didn't even bother for food after that. While sitting there, we made reservations at another restaurant instead of sticking around here. When the busser came to check in, we told him, and his response was, "I'm not surprised." we won't be back and wouldn't recommend this place to anyone. The food and prices are not worth your time.id rather skip my meal than come and try to eat here again.

Google
Lick-the-spoon cuisine, decent beer list, and the best hostess on the beach. Don't stand in line at Hideaway. Eat here. The only reason they got 4 stars is because they were understaffed for a weekend night and.the gumbo was white people gumbo, not the flavor we are used to.

Google
Extremely poor service. The only person that acknowledged me was at the front door when I showed I.D. Ordered a basic cocktail which was made improperly( WHO PUTS CLUB SODA IN A MARGARITA?) Dive bars provide better service. Only ordered fries which were bland and undercooked after requesting they be cooked well done and xtra crispy. It’s very easy to tell that the staff is poorly trained, and management is severely lacking.

Google
This place just rebranded and it was great. Not packed and we were actually able to get a table that we could talk at. Food was great. No lie, the best poke nachos we have ever had. The prosciutto flat bread was great too!

You can’t call yourself an Eagles bar and then abruptly “close for a private event” and kick everyone out in the middle of the 4th quarter of a big game. Bummer, because it’s otherwise a fine place. But you can’t do that. Eagles fans shouldn’t come here. Go Birds.

I barely write reviews, but I feel compelled to share this to potentially save others from going through what I'm currently enduring. I'm writing this from a hospital bed after suffering from severe food poisoning following a meal at Union Kitchen & Tap. We dined there on Friday night, November 15th, and ordered the following: * Prosciutto flatbread * Bacon mac and cheese * Brussels sprouts * Two cocktails What should have been an enjoyable night turned into an absolute nightmare. Within hours of eating there, I began experiencing unbearable symptoms that eventually led me to seek emergency medical care. This place is a health hazard. Please, for your own safety, stay far away.

Great burger and steak frites. Cool looking restaurant with good music. Attentive but not intrusive staff.

Google
Very poor service, one waitress argued when it was stated that a plate of chicken wings was a small portion (rcvd 7 wings when it should have been 8) and asked if she should just bring 1 more wing, took forever to get the food. Also, had the option of getting the bill receipt via text but never did rcvd it.

Yelp
Great spot. Came in for dinner around 6:00 and it was mellow. Great menu and drink selection. Much more than a burger joint or gastro-pub. If you've been to the one in Encinitas, fairly similar. At the higher end of what you'd expect for a meal in PB, but well worth it!!!

Yelp
The newest spot for this restaurant group, a rebranding of another of their efforts in the same location. It is a huge venue with all sorts of seated areas be in the bar, or a fire lit patio. Basically, the same menu as the other union taps and the food is just as, good and reliable. Our server, Annelise (sp?)was friendly and helpful and super fun. The cocktails were creative and well crafted. We just ate light, sharing one of their Caesars with the added anchovies, some wings and the appetizer creole shrimp. Everything was excellent. I only knocked off one star because there were no carrots with the wings, and it was served with ranch but not blue cheese, which she did bring out to us (but they don't do carrots at all.)

Yelp
A very cool/vibey spot in PB to watch games and pull up with larger parties. Everyone was pretty friendly, drinks were reasonable and it wasn't packed which was great, because every other spot nearby was crazy. I got a Philly cheesesteak and a vodka Red Bull which were pretty good! The meat in the cheesesteak had a little gristle and the cocktail was a little small, but they did the job and overall tasted great. Would def try this spot again!

Yelp
Union Kitchen & Tap has opened a third branch by replacing a previous establishment with Kitchen & Tap in its name. It's a terrific location being less than two blocks away from the Crystal Pier and PB oceanfront. I don't believe they have any dedicated on-site parking which is probably the biggest drawback. All of the curbside spaces along this block of Garnet Ave are now metered after the city installed them late last year. I visited recently during a weekend brunch hour and unsurprisingly, it was quiet. The venue is a good spot for football game watches. Since this is the offseason, the crowds for those events are in hibernation until late summer. The new ownership has spruced up the interior with more plants. I didn't notice this before, but there is a back lounge area with a dedicated bar that was semi-private. On the brunch menu, the category choices were breakfast, share plates, salads, favorites, flatbreads, and sides. Noticeably absent were burritos and tacos which are staples of SD brunches. I picked the Union Gumbo from the list of favorites. Andouille sausage, smoked chicken, okra, and scallions were added to a very dark roux that had a scoop of jasmine rice in the middle. The broth was quite spicy to the point I wish there was more rice included to balance the dish. The $23 price tag was on the expensive side too. I gave a rating between three and four stars for my meal at Union Kitchen & Tap.

Yelp
Service was very slow, patio heaters didn't work, food was extremely salty. This is my second time here and both times had food so salty, it was inedible. I would go here for a glass of wine sitting at the bar in the future but no food.

Yelp
If you like soft scrambled eggs, this is the place. My eggs came out perfect. Service was great, very attentive with the bottomless mimosas. Sure the potatoes could use some work. Live music was fire for Saturday brunch. I will come back.

Tara T.

Yelp
Executive burger is delicious! Purpose first beach clean up group keeps on ordering it every month after our event nearby! Everyone has been kind here as well! Thank you so much!!

Yelp
Came here because the place we really wanted to go was packed and we were hangry. Place was basically empty. Waitress came by and I asked if they had any Mexican lagers on tap. Only had Pacifico, I was looking for a local brewery. Ended up with an 805. Next ordered the Poke nachos, they were okay. Nothing too hard there. For the main I got the pan roasted half chicken with mashed potatoes and carrots. The presentation was good but it took about 20 minutes. I believe our waitress went in break because we didn't see her for about 20 minutes. In the meantime I had ordered a margarita. I could see it sitting on the counter. At least 2 other waiters saw it sitting there and nobody brought it to me. I was just about to walk over and get it myself when alas one of the waitresses decided to bring it. Mind you the place is pretty dead. I understand when it's busy and the staff is overwhelmed, but come on now. Has anyone heard of teamwork? Back to my main that finally came and was brought out by another waiter. Chicken was of poor quality and was too salty. Carrots and mashed potatoes were good. Our waitress finally came by to ask how things were, yeah they were salty. I didn't say anything because at this point just wanted the check. One star for the poke nachos. Too many places around this area to be slacking on service. Won't be back.

Yelp
I liked it a lot more when it was backyard. Manager went and talked to everyone except me- maybe because I am younger but it felt rude and I was very polite and tipped well. There is clearly a reason why this place is empty. Don't discriminate against your younger customers who are the ones that go out in Pacific beach!

Jay B.

Yelp
Wife and I had our reception here and it was amazing. Staff were great, food was great and atmosphere was perfect. They really made it an amazing night. Thank you to all that were involved.

Allie J.

Yelp
The food was terrible. 3/5 of our dishes came out cold. 5/5 people didnt finish their food because it was so bad. I mean how do you mess up breakfast potatoes? Service lackluster. Never came over to refill or supply water to any of us. Save your time and money and go elsewhere.

Ryan J.

Yelp
Shitty, overpriced crap with poor service. Go to Fig Tree Cafe or Konos for brunch, and one of the many better bars and restaurants nearby for lunch or dinner. Went here for a quick, casual brunch and will not be returning. It was $80 (pre tip) for two brunch entrees (Chilaquiles and a burger) and two Bloody Mary's. The burger was terrible - clearly frozen patty, hard overcooked bun and toppings were basic grocery store quality. Ordered it medium rare and it was medium well. Wouldn't have minded - but it was $21 which is downright offensive given it was probably the worst burger I've had in PB. Bloody Mary's were also very mid and small. $15 and they upcharged us $2 for making them spicy, even though the waiter asked as if it was just a regular option. Again, I don't really mind that price but the quality sucked and the waiter was not upfront. Generally an overpriced, skeazy tourist trap with crap food and aggressive, corporate feeling service. Honestly the chef and manager should be ashamed of themselves. Hope this place doesn't last

Yelp
Had a great burger here and all the other dishes looked really good. Service was quick and the waitress was nice. About a block away from the beach and there is an ice cream place across the street. Indoor and outdoor seating available.

Charles W.

Yelp
Food wasn't good enough for the given price. Fries were all short and stubs. Staff approached right a way. Menu for food small selection. This would be more a place to drink , if I visit again.

Lawrence J.

Yelp
The Pacfic Beach location is outstanding. Food is terrific. Servers are friendly. and courteous. The decor is new and exciting. Fresh air, but cooled for the summer. It is going to be around for a long time. Come visit. I loved it.

Dana M.

Yelp
Delicious food, mocktails and cocktails! Staff is professional, kind, helpful and just lovely. The bloody Mary's are some of the best we have ever had.

Troy P.

Yelp
I was hoping Union Kitchen was more than just a name change from its former establishment, The Backyard. Once again, just like its predecessor, I was equally disappointed. The food was decent but nothing to write home about. The service is not good. The Backyard was strike 1. The Union Kitchen is strike 2. We won't be back and won't be recommending this place.

Luna G.

Yelp
It was a Sunday brunch with 18 friends, everything we ordered was great and came out on time.. even though we were a large group they kept track of everyone and our server was wonderful

Lino V.

Yelp
food is over priced . my sangria was horrible they put wine on ice and sent it to me. we sent it back for a beer. don't eat at this place it's horrible.

Taylor W.

Yelp
Our waitress Lexi Lets is amazing!! Live music, great food, and bottomless mimosas. What more could you ask for?

Soph A.

Yelp
Came here with some girlfriends for appetizers and drinks and was absolutely delighted by the service and quality of food! Our server Lara was absolutely fantastic and so thoughtful it made the whole experience amazing.

Zachary R.

Yelp
Awesome vibes. Phenomenal wings. Coolest new spot in Pacific Beach by far. Highly recommend.

Ms N.

Yelp
Loud music, the server couldn't even hear us. Food overpriced and just ok. Huge nice space, but no people. Not like one in North County. They should make family friendly since we have so many school in the area and put some games in one area for kids, then families might go. Hope they survive and don't turn into a club

Oly O.

Yelp
We came here on a Saturday early evening for dinner. I was thrilled to see the cool booths in the newly remodeled bar area. But, as an older person it was so loud and the table so big we couldn't hear each other shouting across the table. We got relocated to the outdoor area in hopes of less noise. Not true. How could it be so loud with so few people here? The TVs and music were blasting and I felt like we were supposed to stand up and drink beer in a tight group party rather than sit and eat a high-end dinner. The menu screams high-end dinner with the prices and selections. A hamburger is $25! Glasses of wine are about $13-18 and good. The mushroom flatbread and Caesar salad were both good. Steaks are $43-70 with no sides included. It is annoying you have to pay $3 more to get a sauce. Who's going to order a steak and say "no steak sauce"? The steak and peppercorn sauce were excellent. The service was very good too. I'll probably be back to stand up, drink a beer and watch sports. I will go somewhere else for a nice dinner.
