Shaw’s La Jambe Will Sell French Wine and Cheese at Union Market Stall | Eater DC

"Inside Union Market a new 13-seat La Jambe outpost will debut, and the market already hosts Parisian-inspired stalls like Virginia’s Petite Lou Lou that opened this summer." - Tierney Plumb

I’m a frequent customer and love this place! Their vegetarian Reuben sandwich with tofu is AMAZING and they have unique snacks, drinks, desserts, food options and cool, friendly staff! Today, I met Wren who made a citrus pie with cream cheese, lime and a berry compote. He introduced himself and was so pleasant! The pie was very yummy and the perfect, sweet end to a long day!

Google
Union Market is a great lunch spot! I’m a big fan of the indoor/outdoor dining, and the neighborhood market feel. The vegan club sandwich was fantastic, but I will always be a fries over chips gal. Richmond restaurants lack parking lots, so it can be tough to find decent parking. I would return, and I am interested in trying other menu items and drink options!

Roarie Y.

Google
Cute sandwich shop with outdoor and indoor seating. Coffee, beer and wine is available. Great for lunch, an early dinner, or a meeting with friends. I got two sides because I just couldn't chose! One was the days special a vegan Cajun red beans and rice and the other was their white bean artichoke and arugula salad. The Cajun beans were spicy just as one would expect! The salad was refreshing and lemony. Perfect for the warmer weather. I'd love to visit this spot again. Great selection and great prices . The service was swift as well!

Google
Cute place. Service good. French Dip and chicken tarragon sandwiches very good. Sides pasta snd potato salad were good.

Google
I’ve lived in the neighborhood for two years. Union is a classic and always hits, s/o tempeh bahn mi and the pimento cheese with Route 11 chips, but what compelled me to write a review is the vegetarian smash burger I had last night! THANK YOU GUYS FOR HAVING THIS OPTION. I love a black bean/veggie patty, but sometimes just want that “meat” experience and not a ton of places in the neighborhood have that. It was so, so good after running the half yesterday.

Julian D.

Google
Union market really is a neighborhood gem. hosting block parties, decent happy hour and a really well curated selection of wines and foods. Staff are pleasant and attentive. The only criticism I would have is that they fell for the tipping model on every transaction. It's awkward, do I really need to be confronted with a request to tip when I buy a bag of chips? I would much rather they add a surchage or simply increase their prices. It puts the customer on the spot when the employee is standing there watching whether you tip or not. Kind of ruins an otherwise pleasant experience.

Google
One of my favorite places in Church Hill and Richmond! They make their version of a “Big Mac” on the weekends! It is delicious! The beef is fresh (never frozen) and the accoutrements add such a great flavor. On Sundays they offer live music ( usually 1 or 2 piece groups). The staff are very friendly and make Union a great place to gather with close friends or for a family to meet for a reasonable priced and very tasty meal! I would encourage you to drop by if you haven’t.

Google
Union Market never misses. I’ve been here several times visiting Richmond or as a pit stop! They have delicious and healthy food. Loved this half salad half sandwich combo! Got to eat outside this time. So glad to see its still here!

Yelp
This is one of my favorite go tos in Richmond. Love the chicken salad, the salmon, and the pimento cheese spread. The soups are always original. Also, it is a great place to shop for picnic stuff

Yelp
Concept is super cool. Food is good! But. Every time I've been there and eaten outside the flies are relentless so that's gross. Surely something they could try to do. Then when you are finished eating and you go to bus your table there are lots of flies hanging at that area as you are cleaning plates off and putting in bins so that's also not an ideal way to wrap up your meal.

Yelp
Food is so delicious and comes out fast and hot! Service is exceptional; staff is customer oriented, professional, and friendly. Love the decor...even the outdoor seating area has a feeling of comfort. Plenty of indoor and outdoor seating (dogs allowed outside with water bowls provided). Great draft beer selection. Has a market place adjacent to the restaurant and bar. Love the ability to flex and make a sandwich based on current events (see photo). Highly recommend this place!

Yelp
U.M. Cheesesteak deserves a little shoutout! Delicious and worth the try if you haven't :)

Yelp
One of THE best sandwiches I have ever had in my life! I cannot wait to come back. Union market is smack dab in the middle of a peaceful neighborhood. The vibes were homey, friendly, and warm. So many options for food & drink. And the beautiful cashier couldn't have been sweeter, you could tell she loved her job!

Yelp
I love Union Market! Their food is so flavorful and tastes fresh. The outside seating area is so lovely, but it can get quite cramped indoors. The servers I've had here have been friendly. My favorite menu items are the UMGC and the white bean arugula salad. I also got the pastrami sandwich (smoked gouda, kimchi, Russian dressing) with turkey which was very tasty. The smoked salmon salad was good, too, but the potatoes and beets were a little under done.

Yelp
Came here for lunch with my wife a couple weeks ago and finally got to try this place. She got a salad and I got a sandwich. The salad was really big and the sandwich wasn't bad. My wife liked this place way more than I did. Food was good but I didn't think it was anything too special. The salad tasted great, for a salad. The sandwich wasn't bad but it wasn't anything too special, something that could be thrown together at home. I'll probably get dragged back here by my wife and I won't complain about it, but it wouldn't be somewhere I'd send someone to if they were visiting the city or anything. Good place for a light lunch though.

Yelp
Located in Church Hill, Union Market has a charming little restaurant and small grocery store. My parents and I enjoyed a quick dinner together. We ordered tuna melts and a salmon salad. I loved the tuna melts because it had a great balance between the cheese and tuna, which paired nicely. The salmon salad on the other hand tasted fresh and crunchy - still delicious. The food portions are plentiful, you can pick a side chips or a side salad. The staff was wonderful, friendly, and helpful with suggestions. It's one of our favorite spots in town :) Any sandwich on their menu is definitely worth trying!

Yelp
Local mini grocery store and sandwich shop. Amazing fried egg sandwich on jalapeno cheese bagel.

Yelp
Excellent service on a Monday night. Their salad portions are HUGE and an excellent value. My wife always gets the Greek with chicken . Their dressing is on point. I've had the Ruben in the past. Delicious! But this time I got their Philly with the works. You will not be disappointed. I believe their fresh rolls are from MD. The tanginess of the pepper relish was amazing and I bumped it with some Riveracha sauce. We ate inside at one of the high tables. There's plenty of artwork to enjoy and shopping on the other side for beet, wine, food, sauces.

Yelp
Spendy, but generous portions of good food. Get the hummus plate, for sure! Note to management: you have one employee with such overwhelming body odor that I actually went off my food for a bit and had to leave my table to wash my nose out. Not a sentence I have ever written before in my life.

Yelp
Cozy Cafe and Bar with Consistently Reliable Deli Food! I simply love dining at this cafe whenever I visit Richmond. The restaurant also has a small grocery store with neighborhood bodega vibes, and I enjoy walking around the store while waiting for my food. Guests can order outside at the walk-up counter, over the phone, or in person. The staff is friendly and works efficiently. I ordered their BLT, which comes with Applewood-smoked bacon, tomato, green leaf lettuce, and my favorite roasted garlic Duke's mayo. I always ask for extra mayo and get it on their gluten-free bread option. I also ordered extra bacon because I love it, and they provide a generous amount. In an effort to be slightly healthy, I usually opt for the salad instead of the chips, which comes with a nice vinaigrette.

Yelp
Ordered the pick two with half the Reuben (no cheese) and smoked salmon salad. Both blew me away! The smoked salmon was absolutely delicious and I love how the corned beef was chopped finely. We sat outside on the spacious patio and ordered at the window. The wait time was short and staff friendly! 10/10 would eat here again

Yelp
Quaint, and easy going vibes. The Market is a good place to pick up a bottle of wine or two. The food was very amazing, some good Vegetarian selections, the beer selection was a bit limited like to see devils backbone, or some other lager. They do have Athletic in a can which is a nice change of pace beer and a good NA if you're driving and want to pair something hoppy with thier food. The outside patio on a nice day is a nice place for lunch as well.
google avatar

Emily S.

Yelp
Love. This. Place. The food and drinks are always great, and the bartender always stops by to chat, which is so nice. The outdoor dining area is great during warm weather days. Honorable mention: all of the salad dressings are phenomenal.
google avatar

Yelp
My favorite place to get a Cuban sandwich! Love the gluten free options. Great little place in the middle of a quaint neighborhood!

Anthony H.

Yelp
This is a nice quaint restaurant with a market attached to it. The waitress was very welcoming and the food was pretty good. Must try the mushroom cheesesteak.
google avatar

Ashley K.

Yelp
Super cute location with indoor and outdoor seating. They have a good selection of sandwiches which are served with a salad or chips. My all time favorite option is the chicken tarragon which is the perfect combination of sweet and salty. They have an indoor market where you can opt for beer, wine or non-alcoholic options. They also have a ton of small snack options like hummus, dips, spreads and crackers.
google avatar

Ray S.

Yelp
Stopped by for lunch. Very busy but they were friendly and got the food out quickly. Amazing food and love the outdoor and indoor seating setup. Definitely a place to stop if you are looking for a great sub/sandwich.

Yelp
Short review with no picture since I ate the sandwich before I thought about reviewing it, and plenty of other people have reviewed it, and I find their reviews to be very consistent to what I'm going to say. This is a neat little sandwich shop located in the Church Hill section of Richmond. The menu is relatively simple with a lot of locally sourced products. I found the pricing to be reasonable and they have a beautiful little patio where you can sit outside. They have a really neat breakfast menu as well, but we got there too late for that. Seriously, give this place a shot. You will not be disappointed.

Yelp
This is a fantastic place for an easy lunch salad or sandwich. The patio is outstanding and I highly recommend.

Yelp
It was recommended we try this place by a friend, and it was a pleasant surprise! A quaint sandwich shop situated on a small (really small) triangular block in the Church Hill district. Seating could be found both inside and out. And there was a walkup window for ease of ordering. And the food? Really good. I was feeling like a simple BLT and they delivered. Exactly what I was looking for. And ... they have gluten free bread (which is an important option for my wife)! For my GF friends, my wife says it was better than average. I look forward to coming back.
google avatar

Yelp
Nothing on the menu looked appetizing for the prices they are charging for a sandwich... Lucky for us Pizza Bones is just up the street.

Peter C.

Yelp
Delicious sandwiches! UMGC was amazing especially the goat cheese pesto. And relaxing outdoor patio

Billy S.

Yelp
Not enough great things to say. If I lived closer I may have a problem on my hands. Awesome little market with some of the best sandwiches in town. Staff is great and always cheerful.
google avatar

Connie T.

Yelp
One of my favorite lunch spots! You really can't go wrong with anything on the menu but my all time favorite is the chicken tarragon sandwich. It's a wonderful combination of textures and sweet/savory flavors. They have lots of outdoor seating and some indoor. It's a great place to study or read a book. Wifi is available. They are busy during peak lunch hours so I would recommend online ordering in advance if you're doing take out. The little market is also nice for other beverage and snacks options.
google avatar

Yelp
I have been here several times. The service is always friendly. They have 1 of the best ruebens I have ever had and I love their version of grilled cheese.

Yelp
I was so excited to try union market after seeing the cute outdoor seating area. I went the other day when the weather was lovely out, and there was plenty of outdoor seating under the umbrellas. We opted to get our food to go, so we checked out the goods inside the market itself while we waited! They had so many fun things from gourmet pastas, to craft beers, and other convenience store type items. After waiting not too much longer, we got our food. I was so excited to try the sandwich. I loved how many vegetarian options there were! This was completely vegan, even subbing mayonnaise with vegan mayo. It was delicious. I ate every bite and I loved that we could get chips or greens as the side! It wasn't too pricy either. My boyfriend loved his sandwich too.

Yelp
i came here in support of a fundraiser for the elementary school nearby; i'm glad i did! the food was so delicious, and beyond what i expected. i would consider myself a cheese lover, so i had to try the UMGC which consists of mozzarella, parmesan, goat cheese pesto, with some tomatoes. it was essentially an elevated grilled cheese. it was perfectly seasoned and had the best cheese pull-- i wish i captured it. the ambiance was certainly cozy. i came during the cold, but i'm sure in warmer times it's a lot better. it was right in the center of the surrounding neighborhood, which gave the market a sense of community. the servers brought our food out to us. if you need anything you can head inside or ask one of the cashiers for help. i would rate it higher if i could, but i definitely recommend trying union market!

Yelp
RICHMOND, VA / AMERICAN CAFE / 10-03-21 / OUTDOOR LUNCH +Great prices +Attached to a cool market +The Italian Sandwich was good -There was a bunch of college folks smoking on the patio, but what can we do...we were definitely out of place with our two toddlers. -The pimento cheese appetizer could use better crackers
google avatar

Chris M.

Yelp
Great patio for the pup! Only downside was the flies, but they had tabletop fans to discourage them.

Bennett F.

Yelp
Awesome local hot spot. Great sandwiches & salads plus a beer & wine bar with great local brews. Attached to a small gourmet market. Very friendly service. Nice outdoor seating.

Yelp
Great atmosphere and killer sandwiches! Staff is really friendly too: Definitely be back when in Richmond.

Yelp
A vegan's heaven if you are craving comfort food. I hardly ever get to just grab a sandwich and feel confident I don't have to nitpick and substitute or pull a bunch of things off. I could visit Union Market a thousand times and never tire of their menu. I love the "Pick 2" option as the portion sizes are not skimpy. The TLT sandwich - the vegan tofu version of a classic BLT - is absolutely delicious! And I love pairing it with the chopped salad. Great place to grab lunch with a friend on their patio or curbside seating.

Yelp
Union market is delicious every single visit. No matter what you order you will not be disappointed. This time we sat outside on their lovely patio that also had a rain cover. Plenty of space between the tables and they had a QR code on each table so you could view the full menu. Their menu is also posted by their patio window where you can order food. It's your choice to order via your phone or with a mask at the window. You can order food to go or eat outside at one of their many tables. This visit I got the Reuben sandwich which was super flavorful. Not too much of a single ingredient. It melded together perfectly. I enjoyed their pasta salad on the side. A bit of forewarning that I believe it had some jalapeño in it so a little spicy, but not super hot. I would get it again. The last time I came here I had their smoked salmon which was equally delicious. They also have a daily special that they'll feature. No matter what you're in the mood for you can find something you'll enjoy. Don't forget to check out the market portion where you can find locally made snacks, drinks, and other merchandise. My favorite things to pick up are the Nightingale ice cream sandwiches, King of Pops popsicles, and Ninja Kombucha. I got the s'mores sandwich, blackberry ginger lemon popsicle, and lemon ginger kombucha to bring home. If you haven't been, be sure to stop by Union Market!

Yelp
I was in Virginia for a quick trip and found the Union market to be very helpful and adorable! It has a market portion has to go to snack, drinks (alcoholic & not), things to make a spread, and lots of local treats. The café portion of the market had a walk up window to order food and drinks. They had a great breakfast menu and also a lunch menu. Drinks were available all day! The breakfast burrito was so big and inexpensive! It was stuffed with delicious cheeses, beans, and egg (meat could have been added). The bloody Mary had lots of pickle juice in it and the Mimosa had several flavors available! This is an awesome market that I couldn't wait to eat it again!

Yelp
Great little nook in a neighborhood setting with plenty of street parking. We stopped by for lunch and was happy to see plenty of outdoor seating. Sat in the corner bench under the sun umbrellas. we ordered a ham sandwich, lox sandwich, and chorizo hash. both sandwiches were very tasty in its own way. both each sandwich had very fresh ingredients. chorizo hash was delicious. i personally love chorizo and never had it in with hash. topped with eggs, sauce, and scallions. what a great combo.

A A.

Yelp
I absolutely adore this place. The French dip has been my go to for 2 years now. The Philly and Reuben are great too, not to mention the specials. The rotate art from local artists on the walls, and you can even purchase them. Service is always amazing, the staff is relaxed and kind.

Yelp
What a beautiful place to celebrate my Mothers Day Brunch outside on the patio with my kids. They brought me here specifically because they have vegan option that are really great so.. I had the vegan club sandwich which was very good. The only thing about it that I didn't like was every time I hit into it the toppings would slide out. But, taste wise, I really liked the sandwich, it came with chips or a salad, and we went inside the market to buy some juice. We tried 2 different ones, orange mango and orange pineapple. Out of the 2, the orange mango was the winner. All 4 of us preferred it over the pineapple although both were good. Cost wise, it's expensive $6.+. But, it's only 3 ingredients so it was worth it for a nice sized bottle. I will venture back one day soon to try something else. My only suggestion is if you go here, don't come starving because they are very busy and your food is going to take a long time to come out. Ours took 45 minutes. Worth the wait though.
google avatar

Danette D.

Yelp
I decided to check out Union Market because a few years back they posted on Facebook a sandwich called the Pastrami Bomb with pimento cheese but of course it was a special and wasn't available on the menu so I opted for the pastrami and let me tell you it did not disappoint. It has grilled pastrami or tempeh, kimchi slaw, smoked Gouda with homemade Russian dressing on Billy bread and it was the best sandwich I've ever tasted! The kimchi took the sandwich up two notches.... If you are ever in Churchill I would highly recommend checking them out. PS.... topped this off with a Great Lakes lager

Yelp
Stopped here on a road trip and I am so glad I found this place! I arrived at 1:30 on a Friday and there was one group ordering at the counter in front of me. I waited probably 15 minutes to order which was slow but the two people behind the counter were hustling with takeout service and the bar the entire time. I ordered the chicken tarragon sandwich with a side of greens and a lemonade. I love that they only upcharge $0.50 for gluten free bread, and it's big slices that taste great! My food came out quickly, but I did have to bus the table I chose because the previous guests hadn't noticed that they were supposed to do that themselves. That should be more clear so dishes don't pile up. But it wasn't a big deal. I enjoyed my meal and would absolutely recommend Union Market for lunch.
google avatar

Yelp
I had an excellent chorizo hash breakfast bowl. It was flavorful, nicely prepared, and of a generous size. The coffee was a different story. It had a bitter, unpleasant, acid flavor. Not at all in keeping with the quality of the food.
google avatar

Kathryn T.

Yelp
Such a great place! We came on a Saturday morning for breakfast sandwiches (we ordered at 10:58 and they had a hard stop for ordering breakfast at 11)! They warned us it would take about 40 mins to get our food, but we enjoyed our coffee on the patio and didn't mind the wait at all! All of their food is locally sourced, affordable, and delicious! They also have a great selection of mimosas, draft beer and wine!
google avatar

Nikki J.

Yelp
This market is a cute little quaint! I'd passed by on a walk in Church Hill one day and knew I had to try it. My friend and I came on a Saturday to try patio seating, it was pretty crowded but there were a couple of tables on the outside. They have a QR code menu, but you have to order at the patio window. There's not really space to social distance, because it's a pretty small area. But staff had on gloves and masks. And the table that my friend and I had was a little distanced from the crowd. The food was pretty good! I got the cheesesteak and kettle chips. They were both pretty good. My friend got the roast beef sandwich, and neither of us was a fan of the jus. But both meals were filling!
google avatar

Yelp
I've been here several times. Half store with local goods, half restaurant with casual outdoor seating. I love their ice cream sandwiches, veggie burgers and Reuben sandwiches!

Yelp
I came here when I was visiting my best friend in Richmond! I was browsing Yelp and Instagram and came across Union Market. When we got there, it was super busy for a lunch rush. We sat at the bar , ordered a few drinks, and decided to split a sandwich. The wait for a sandwich was at least 1 hour. We waited because we were not in a rush, but if I was starving, I would have had to leave. Anyway, We ordered the cheesesteak and I thought it was delish! The bread was soft, and the cheesesteak had great flavor. I am sure the other sandwich options would be great, too. It had a great cheese to meat ratio, and I would definitely order that sandwich again. If you like a casual setting with indoor and outdoor seating then this is a great pick!

Chelsea T.

Yelp
Caesar Salad - very bland, light colored lettuce, not very appealing. Think Applebees type of quality Turkey panini - whatever the sauce was on this sandwich tasted rancid. The bread by itself was fine -- it was the sauce or something on the sandwich that tasted icky. Cobb salad - one dinky container of dressing. It was tasty. The kale was tough and the sliced Brussel sprouts were stale and chewy. Tarragon chicken sandwich - center of this sandwich had some deep fried something in it -- unsure what it was. Interesting flavors. Grilled cheese - my "child" was appalled about the quality of the grilled cheese sandwich. It appeared toasted and not grilled.

Yelp
I love coming here for a quick breakfast or lunch. My favorite is the chorizo hash and you cannot go wrong with the pick 2 for lunch. They even have to go alcoholic drinks.

Yelp
Update from a year ago, very happy to say that quality and care has been restored to their dishes! I am officially a fan of their breakfast burrito now too! Thanks for stepping it up!
