Danny Meyer’s Restaurant Group to Feed Food-Insecure Bronxites | Eater

"This catering kitchen is being utilized to prepare community meals for distribution in the South Bronx through ReThink Food’s Restaurant Response Program while dining rooms remain closed. Management emphasizes the dual purpose of feeding vulnerable communities and using the activity to retrain and re-engage kitchen staff so operations can resume smoothly when allowed, describing the effort as a form of spring training. The initiative is conducted in partnership with Brookfield Properties, which highlighted both neighborhood need and nearby development investments in choosing the South Bronx." - Jaya Saxena

My daughter’s wedding at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden Atrium last weekend was absolute perfection! Even though the pouring rain moved the ceremony indoors, I can’t imagine how it could have been any lovelier outdoors. I loved that once we realized wedding day rain was inevitable, we didn’t have to worry, because we knew the professionals at Union Square events had a great game plan. The way their team was able to shift cocktail hour into the hallway and use a moveable wall to provide a backdrop to the ceremony, while allowing the dining tables to be preset yet hidden, was really impressive. I was really glad that we had opted to bring in some dramatic lighting and disco ball decor (provided by Universal Light and Sound) to make the space cozier and prettier, as the Atrium can look a little bare with only overhead lighting. We got so many compliments on all the food and beverages, from the passed apps, to the custom cocktails to the perfectly prepared beef entrees. Everything was much better than the tasting night had led us to expect, which makes sense when you consider the number of dishes they are preparing for the tasting night. Everything we tried that night was fine, but I thought the food might not be a highlight of the wedding - what a wonderful surprise to be so wrong about that! I also appreciated the bar staff’s willingness to use the custom cocktail stirrers I had made of the bride’s and groom’s heads - they were a huge hit with our guests and a fun surprise for the couple! I really appreciated that there was a dedicated attendant for the bride and groom in their dressing room, who made sure they each got to try all the canapes and brought them water, champagne, and even a black tea when the bride needed a little caffeine. Every single staff member we interacted with was professional, kind, and extremely good at their jobs. Thank you all for making our daughter’s wedding an epic celebration!

We had our wedding Sunday at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden. Emily was our event planner. The event was wonderful and the food was great. Working with Union Square Events (USE) was difficult. They are a corporate entity. They do not pick up the phone for simple questions and by the end I realized their primary role is to execute contracts, collect insurance certificates (and there are a lot of them), and collect payments. They really do not participate in planning a wedding and give no guidance. Nothing warm and fuzzy about the experience. For the last month we had a wedding planner in place and she was experienced with dealing with USE and their requirements. She described them as “difficult” and having never planned an event of this type before I found them unapproachable. The venue and food were great. Everything came together nicely because of the wedding planner and my efforts. Anyone planning a BBG wedding should hire a planner from the start. Though I had every vendor in place, because they gave so little guidance a wedding planner is needed. Just know that from the start.

We had the perfect wedding at the Palm House, thanks to the team at Union Square Events. From chocolate favors at the initial walkthrough to having a personal attendant for champagne refills and canapes the day of, the team went above and beyond to make every touchpoint special. They answered all of our questions in a timely manner, patiently working through the smallest of details with us in a 60-email-long thread over multiple months. We got nothing but compliments on the quality and variety of the food, as well as the white glove service.
