The Best Coffee Shops in Ottawa and Gatineau | Eater Montreal

"Tucked halfway between the Minto Bridges and “Fort Pearson” to the west and Rideau Hall to the east, the tiny Union Street Kitchen Café has a loyal neighbourhood following drawn in by the coffee shop’s cozy tables and home-made desserts. There’s a yoga studio in the back, too, offering classes throughout the week and on Sundays." - Ivy Lerner-Frank

This is definitely a good spot in town to have a morning coffee because it locates in a nice neighbourhood, really peaceful and has good pastries. The baked goods were well made with golden crispy skin, each bite was rich, suitable amount of butter, not too sweet like most of the pastry found in other places. I honestly didn’t like my ice latte with pistachio milk much. The servers were also very friendly. Just that the place is a bit small and had only 4 tables to sit outside so it would only suitable if you’re going with a group of 3 max. Overall, still a great coffee to visit!

Google
Long story short, this is a wonderful cafe!! They have a great selection of coffee and food here, a small section of seating inside and outside! The staff here are wonderful and kind, they were fast with my order, the energy was calming too! There weren’t a lot of people when I arrived, maybe a couple people, but this place is definitely a great place to go to have a sit down and order something, relax for a while! They have a variety of milk alternatives, including coconut milk, skim, pistachio milk, oat milk, and a couple more! They have sandwiches, wraps, and baked goods, all the while also having non-perishable goods to stock up on your pantry. This is definitely a place to come and check out - Worth your time to see what they have to offer!

Google
What an incredibly lovely spot! Came across it while taking my dog to the dog park down the street, and chatted to a fellow customer outside who told me there were treats for dogs & I could bring him in to order. The staff were amazing and so warm, the baked goods some of the best in the city (almond croissant to die for), and the cafe itself with so much character. What stood out most though was the people who are drawn in. Had some lovely chats and encounters, you can tell it’s a community staple. Also, there is great seating outside an inside. Will be back !

Google
This charming neighbourhood cafe oozes warmth charm and features many creative touches. Expertly and lovingly run by owner Christine, it is clear that the place has woven itself into the fabric of the community since it was established 9 years ago. Dog-friendly and featuring top-notch pastries, cookies and sandwiches (made on the premises), it is a must-visit/frequent spot for coffee, lunch etc whether a visitor or local. Can’t wait to come back.

Google
What a pleasant surprise to come across this pretty little café. I couldn't resist taking a look. It's small and so warm. The service was very good. I took a lemonade and a croissant to enjoy immediately and two cookies for later (Cookie Monster (chocolate chip) and the other raspberry and white chocolate). Everything was very delicious. I recommend!!!

Google
Cute little neighbourhood cafe with welcoming staffs and great service. This is a small takeout cafe ideal for a quick coffee plus pastries. They have sandwiches, cookies and other baked goods. I tried mocha, croissant and mini pecan pie. The mocha was really good slightly on the sweet side though. The baked items were really great too. Definitely coming here again. I wish they had a small indoor seating available and that would make this place complete.

Yelp
This cute little place does not look like much, and it is in a neighborhood a bit off the beaten path. It's on a cute street that is well worth the walk, and parking was tight... literally. I had to wait for cars to pass to get out of my car. There is just not much room on this street. The cafe is cute, I got a latte and some treats. The Whoppie pie cookie was so good as was my coffee. They said that when the weather is better there is seating outside. There was not seating inside. They did have some savories as well, which I would love to go back and try.

Yelp
Love this tiny cafe. The owner and staff are all wonderful. Coffee is great. The primary coffee accompaniment are pastries but there is a yummy breakfast sandwich and other such items there too, if you can rip your eyes away from the goodies to look! It's charming. With the pandemic they have improved their outside, so several great spots to perch and eat and talk. There can be a bit of a lineup so consider trying to find their quieter times if they work for you. Right by the Rideau River so very accessible for bikes and people out for walks.

Yelp
Great service! Very friendly staff and it's a great spot !! You wouldn't think much of it really but it's quite literally an oasis in the neighbourhood!! Also the almond croissants are to die for!!! Definitely best In Ottawa !

Yelp
Tucked away in the heart of the beautiful New Edinburgh, union Street cafe is a super cute and cosy café. This was such an amazing find because everything about this cafe was just so lovely and welcoming. Their vegan roasted veggie and pesto sandwich is amazing! I have never had a sweet potato and beet sandwich, have never considered using these as a sandwich filling but oh my gosh, it all just works like really, really well!! Sandwiched between two slices of sourdough bread, the sweet potatoes and beets are literally the "meat" of the sandwich, while the pesto and arugula helps bring in a ton of flavor. With a side of a really frothy almond milk cappuccino, it was a perfect pairing. What I really love their use of floral plates and cups, which was a plus point to the already lovely ambience of the cafe. Their menu is limited and everything is vegetarian with vegan options too. They also have a large selection of freshly baked home made cookies and desserts which I didn't get to try this time. The staff and owner were very friendly, and it was like everyone who walked in knew each other and the owner too! No wonder it is so frequented by locals. This cosy cafe is also perfect if you want a quick bite or to get some work done. But I must say, it is still quite a small place so I'd definitely recommend coming here on a weekday!

Yelp
Great food, coffee and terrific, friendly service. Just having moved from Toronto, we are enjoying living in the area.

Yelp
This cute little French neighborhood cafe serves up tasty treats and hot drinks along with a quaint and charming ambiance. It's located just a few blocks away from Rideau Hall. It's entirely surrounded by residential houses - certainly not a commercial area. In fact, it's easy to miss unless you know where you're going. Once you find it and walk inside, you'll be greeted by a friendly shopkeeper and a cozy atmosphere. There are only a few tables, so it's certainly not a place for big groups. But it's a great place to come with a book or with a friend and lounge for a while. They serve various pastries, sandwiches, coffees, and other hot drinks. I came for breakfast, so I got the pain au chocolat (delicious and dense) and a hot chocolate. I had a lovely time and would happily go back. I get the feeling it mostly serves locals from the neighborhood. But if you're in the area, definitely stop by to warm up and unwind a little.

Yelp
I loved going here while I was on my vacation in Ottawa! I went a couple of years ago and I'm still thinking about how delicious my croissant and hot chocolate were.

Yelp
If you happen to be in the neighbourhood and need a lovely small café to sit and enjoy the afternoon sun that's the place for you. It's not very big though. There are only 4-5 tables outside and even fewer inside. If you don't feel like staying just grab a coffee, go to the Rideau Hall, sit down and watch a game of cricket. Their coffee machine looks kinda old and not fancy at all but still makes really good coffee. The first time we went i didn't try the pastries but corrected that mistake the second time. Everything we ordered was really tasty and made on the spot. It's really a small gem in the neighbourhood. There are no other cafes in the vicinity anyways.

Yelp
Nice surprise. Fresh healthy flavourful food. Quaint little café with friendly staff. A place to discover.

Yelp
Great little wholesome cafe that provides loving and heart warming food to all who visit. Likewise the greatest coffee I've ever had, lattes are surely made with love, and incredibly delicious soups. This is a vegetarian cafe that provides some selection of vegan foods. On their menu they have soups, breakfast and lunch sandwiches, large cookies, croissants, muffins, a selection of bec's cola (in the bottle), coconut water, perrier, and lots of other goodies. They provide both indoor and outdoor seating but is limited to about 16 chairs which can fill up very fast around lunch time. They have beautiful flooring and bamboo wood counters. Towards the back of the cafe there is an entrance to Shunnya which is a yoga studio connected to the back of the cafe in the separate area with beautiful hardwood flooring and a nice ceiling. The building itself is over 100 years old and had been built before Canada had actually been registered as a country, there is a lot of history to the building and stories revolving around previous businesses that had existed prior to the cafe.

Yelp
A lovely cosy cafe ! Always get a warm welcome here. Great coffee and the croissants are the best !

Yelp
I was charmed! Maybe because the day was outstandingly beautiful. Or maybe because I was feeling a surge of nostalgia stepping foot in my childhood neighbourhood. Regardless of my euphoric mood of the moment, my little lunch in this quaint café was simply delightful. The offerings are simple: sandwiches, home baked goodies, soup, salads and coffee bar... all made in house and all very attractive! The dishes may look simple but don't be fooled, the flavours are complex and perfectly well balanced. I enjoyed (and devoured) a tomato-fresh mozza-pesto panini that was far from humdrum!! Heated just enough to soften the cheese without turning everything else to mush. I paired it with a lovely red lentil and curry soup that was more than satisfying. I couldn't resist a monster Lindt chocolate cookie (like everyone else in line) but I was too full from my copious lunch to enjoy more than a bite. Guess I'll have a delish afternoon snack to look forward to. The café is tiny but expands outside during the summer season. The patio is just as inviting as the inside and it feels like a little secret garden. There is also a street view sitting area for those who like to people watch. It truly is a little gem.

Yelp
I've visited this recently opened cafe in my neighbourhood three times so far. The empanadas are delicious, I've also had the avocado toast on the home made sourdough and a "pizetta"(?). All items were fresh and tasty. The owner is fully hands on making everything but the empanadas and macarons in-house. Atmosphere is relaxed and there is a choice of seating inside or on the street or in the garden. Full range of espresso drinks and brewed coffee. I'll be back.

Yelp
Best cafe in Ottawa! Christine's background in nutrition makes for very interesting combinations of flavours that you won't find anywhere else in the city. From what I can tell, they use really good quality ingredients so everything is at it's max capacity in terms of flavour. I've had the chai and golden (turmeric) lattes which are definitely the most delicious and beautiful drinks I have ever had. You can opt to have cardamom syrup and a sprinkling of dried rose petals (and I think more fresh cardamom?) with your lattes and it's divine. My 8 friends and I had brunch there a few months ago and we got the whole back room/yoga studio to ourselves, and all of our food came pretty quickly considering it was on a Sunday morning rush. I haven't been to a yoga session at this location yet, but Christine has been my yoga instructor elsewhere and she is so calming, funny, and has one of the warmest hearts ever. It's also got a beautiful yoga studio which I've heard they do movie nights in which sounds like so much fun! If it seems out of the way for you, consider how close it is to the bike paths on the Ottawa, Rideau river and the canal, as well as the Rideau falls, the Governor General's residence and the market. It's the perfect place to go to on an afternoon off!

Yelp
This place is a gem. I found it by accident. Sometimes in life you get those nice little surprises. The weather was perfect , the lilac tree was amazing smell. , cappuccino was the best. And the staff ! Oh my g. I love them. They're so nice and friendly. I wish I had more time to stay and do the yoga class. But , back to Toronto ......

Yelp
Amazing homemade soup, even gave us a sample. On the day I went it was a hearty, creamy tomato soup (but not blended) with a dollop of goat cheese on it. Sandwiches and empanadas looked amazing too, next time.

Yelp
Such a cute café! The staff is lovely. Happened to drop by on the owner's birthday and all the customers were served free and DELICIOUS chocolate cake. What a sweet gem to land on. Went on a Saturday morning. No line ups, just excellent service with a smile. Thank you so much!

Yelp
I usually love Union Street Cafe! The service is usually amazing and their food and baked goods are so tasty! I remember one time I went and I got a delicious chai tea latte with dried rosebuds on top -- it was so good! However, my last visit to Union Street Cafe last week, there was a long line around lunch time. I stood waiting in line while the customer in front of me seemed to be causing some confusion as she ordered one drink, then changed her mind and then wanted to add oat milk. I could tell that it was all very confusing! But instead of having one girl focus on that customer and the other employee focus on me, as I was next in line, they both just kind of stared blankly at her. Finally after a long wait, it was my turn to order my iced chai tea latte. However, when I got my drink it tasted so so bad. I was hoping maybe I'd become accustomed to the taste after another sip but with each sip the after taste it left was so gross. I've had an iced chai tea latte from here before and it tasted nothing like this one -- I think the barista, distracted by the other customer, must have missed an ingredient in my drink as it just tasted like murky almond milk. No chai flavour at all! Overall, I'd recommend Union street cafe for their baked goods and sandwiches. But I would say that for the cost of my drink at Union Street Cafe ($5.25) I'd rather just go to Starbucks where I can rely on the quality and taste of their drinks every time. Union street cafe is very hit or miss with their drinks, and for the higher cost of their drinks, that's a risk I'm not willing to take.
