BLUF: Entrees good, apps not as much
Went with about 5 others on a weekday evening. Among us we had steak frites, quinoa salad, house salad, clam chowder, fried calamari, fish and chips and pretzel with mustard.
The menu here is pretty limited. Not a complaint though. It's really a pub taht serves food more than a restaurant. And the selection is adequate for most tastes (i.e., american bar food)
Everyone liked the entrees and salads. The salads had a nice mix of dark greens, not just iceberg lettuce, and they were well dressed. The fish was fluffy and crispy. Clam chowder very good. The steak was tender, but oddly enough didn't come with a steak knife. When we asked for one it was promptly provided, which is a good entre into noting that the service was friendly and prompt throughout.
The calamari was a bit of a letdown. It was overcooked, and had within it a sort of clump of rings. More importantly, it was a pretty scant portion. It didn't even fill the plate provided, and when I saw it I half thought maybe someone grabbed some on the way to the table.
The pretzel was tasty, but actually pretty cold. Either it wasn't warmed or was allowed to sit too long before serving.
Union Street is a staple of the Old Town restaurant scene, and I'd go back because they are consistently good. Rarely great, but good. Just wish that calamari was better.
