Where to Eat and Drink Near the White House in D.C. | Eater DC

"This unpretentious bar is a relatively new addition to the neighborhood. It comes from the owners of some of D.C.’s most trusted watering holes, Solly’s and The Pug. Expect more neighborhood bar, less fancy cocktail den. Crowds appear at happy hour." - Missy Frederick

Stopped here on the 4th of July to cool off and saw that they had happy hour. We were able to find seats right away at the bar. The lady at the bar showed us what they had on tap on the chalk board. She was very nice. I ordered a beer and my family ordered wine. While the bar was dimly light, it was nice to sit, relax, and escape the heat. We were watching Wimbledon on one of the TVs

Google
This place is an absolute gem. Our second time here and trying to keep it a secret LOL! Tristan poured an awesome Old Fashioned and every time we visit DC we visit Union Trust! Incred bourbon selection too!

Google
This has been my favorite bar in DC for a while. Maybe it isn’t OBJECTIVELY the city’s best bar, but it’s exactly the vibe I look for: quiet enough to have a coherent conversation, cheap enough to get tipsier than planned, and offering great Moscow Mules. I love this place.

Google
This place is a dive and I love it. Great beer selection and a very friendly and funny bartender. Not too busy. Great place to put your name in at a busy nearby restaurant then get drinks at while you wait. We ended ups staying longer though. Will be back!

Google
Good selection, nice happy hour till 6:30, most pints $5, still only $7.50 regularly. It was packed when we were here at 6pm on a Wednesday, had to be close to 100 people, only one bartender, whoops. Still worth it.

Google
Great location, services and good prices!

Google
Crowded and VERY loud at happy hour, but the Old Fashioned was solid (Bulleit was the well), and service was quick.

Google
While in DC for a ratty Lil show N' a night on the town we stopped in for a silly couple drinks. The lone guy at the bar kept yelling at us to stir our drinks but the bartender made sure they were plenty mixed. It's a great place is dissociate take it from my buddy!

Yelp
This place is a perfect dive bar. And I mean that in the absolute best way. Beer, liquor, and wine are VERY affordable for DC. The service is one of the best I've had in any bar. Each bartender makes you feel like you're family and they take care to let you enjoy your drink and are there if you need a second (or third, or fourth...) drink. This place is my favorite spot in DC if I just want to relax in a great atmosphere with some great drinks.

Tom V.

Yelp
I can't say enough great things about this place. A bit of a hole in the wall without a great deal of glitz, but the drinks were excellent, the service was even better, and the bartender, Tristan, an absolute delight. We will definitely go back next time we're in DC.
google avatar

Ben C.

Yelp
Best bar in DC and a great hidden gem! Perfect hideaway dive bar in the open and has a great bourbon selection
google avatar

Alesia S.

Yelp
Met up with a friend to have a quick drink while in the area. The service was quick and the staff was welcoming. The prices were reasonable, especially for the area. I would say this a no frills, dive bar.
google avatar

Micah G.

Yelp
We chose this destination for our wedding after party. The service is great and ambience is laid-back and easy-going. We didn't order food here, but they let us bring our own pizza.
google avatar

Shima S.

Yelp
I think just 2$ off per beers and cocktails is not a real happy hour at all!!! I paid $11 pre-tax for a pre-mixed cocktail in happy hour. And also there is absolutely nothing to eat in this place (not even a bag of pretzels to purchase) which is a bummer when you've been drinking.

Greg H.

Yelp
Old Riggs Bank was quite a surprise. A small hole in the wall that feels miles away from its location. Feels more like stepping into a bar in Fells Point in Baltimore. Dark and wooden, perfect for a few beers.
google avatar

William Y.

Yelp
Nice local joint pulling a fine tap and serving over-iced cocktails. Atmosphere is a mix of sports bar and hipster bar, which offends neither concept and is good to meet up. Everyone can find something to like here. Bar tenders are responsive and the service isn't over the top or underwhelming but well calibrated for the space. Prices are consistent for DC. I haven't tried the food so no info on that piece.

Thomas N.

Yelp
Rude bartender when I walked in. Scowled at my friend and I then was rude when he walked up. So rude that we decided to leave before ordering anything. It's incredibly dark inside and they don't have any menus.
google avatar

Andrew H.

Yelp
I like the ambiance of the bar, though it is pretty loud. The night I went the bartenders didn't seem to know what they were doing, and had a bit of sn attitude.

Nathan H.

Yelp
Amazing place, the ambiance is calm and welcoming. the bartenders are very quick, attentive and friendly. Very clean and definitely worth your while.
google avatar

Yelp
Great whiskey selection and service. We were there on Friday night and it was quiet and got to talk to our great bartender, Coit. Ordered a few drinks, including a Blantons bourbon, which is hard to get in the west coast. About an hour later got crazy busy and with only one bartender, he was slammed, but he still took great care of us.
google avatar

Yelp
This place seemed to be hit very hard during the riots in DC. In that context, a bar that looked like a bank was a huge disadvantage. But, they did another remodel and place looks terrific. Between the riots and COVID, they have only been reopened for about four or five weeks. A decent selection of beers on draft, but the Sierra Nevada Hazy IPA was delicious. It's a wonderful place for a drink or two!

Yelp
Good bar. Union Trust is one of the closest bars to the White House. It looks upscale but it's really casual. No food, but good drinks. Totally worth it to have a look. I was walking along the street and saw the sidewalk sign for this bar. It was advertising happy hour, so this was good timing on my part. The inside looks like this is upscale. It looks as nice as it does because before this it was a bank. The bar had enough room for me to have a seat. It had such a good happy hour going on. Rails for just $5, and made with good shit. If I'm around here I'll be sure to come in again. It just doesn't have any food so it's more of a place to stop a bit. This is somewhere to maybe watch a game.
google avatar

Pete G.

Yelp
Found this gem walking to my hotel. It's the perfect place to have a few, and watch a game. It's not huge, no food is served, but it's cozy and the bartenders are awesome.

Cooper F.

Yelp
Extremely inviting bartenders who make going out about meeting people and good conversation instead of staring at phones and talking to a secluded group. The tone of the bar is classy yet comfortable. As a young adult from California, I struggled to find bars where the environment isn't about taking your money and leaving you alone. Here it is the opposite. If I go back to DC I will definitely take friends there in hopes of finding the great conversations/people I had/met there.

Janelle E.

Yelp
We had an afternoon of "day drinking " while escaping the heat & cement city of DC. The bartender, his name escapes me, was friendly & fun to bounce restaurant ideas off of. We had reservations at Joe's steak & seafood, which is right next door. It was a great evening-thanks!
google avatar

Ron S.

Yelp
Impossible to find, save for the sign in the street stating "Yes we are a bar" Really cool space inside. Expensive per drink, but , hey, this is DC. Staff was very polite. Awesome jazz music playing pretty loudly. Hood service. Mixed crowd. Din spot
google avatar

Olga S.

Yelp
This is a no frills downtown bar, a rare species. Best prices around and really friendly bar staff.

Barb W.

Yelp
It was a little too shabby and limited for me - and I understand it's only a few years old? Maybe they are going for rustic, I don't know. So it's only alcohol from what I could see and no food. Two pinball machines. Three booths total and a lot of hard wooden chairs with no backs. Mostly men were there. I guess it's ok to pop in for a drink and leave but I like a bit more comfort and options!
google avatar

Chris H.

Yelp
Great bar. Good whiskey selection. The bartender was really nice. She asked what style of beer I liked and then offered one that would fit my taste. Nice place to catch a drink
google avatar

Kristin W.

Yelp
No complaints here! We were walking back to our hotel after sightseeing and decided to stop in for a beer after laughing at their sign out front: "We're a bar!!" Lovely bartender. Got us water and beer quickly. We were not hungry, but we overheard her telling another party that they were welcome to GrubHub any food they wanted to the bar to eat. I love that!
google avatar

Will W.

Yelp
Cool spot. Good beer, good prices, not too hipster. Staff is nice and welcoming as well. Seems to have a big after work crowd
google avatar

Reed D.

Yelp
Not only is this one of the latest spots open near the Federal Triangle, it's also one of the most reasonable places!
google avatar

Cathy H.

Yelp
3.5 Stars This is a no-frills bar. No food -- just complimentary peanuts and Goldfish. Liquor is pretty reasonably priced for DC. For example, Woodford is $11 a pour. As this place doesn't have a blatant sign, it's hard to find, but it also means that it isn't crowded and you might be able to hear what your company is saying. Service is really good. The playlist is throwback 90s to 00s. I just didn't enjoy being eaten alive by mosquitos over the course of two hours as I *sat inside*. I came out of there with 12 bites on my legs. Other than that, a pretty good low-key option after a show at Warner Theatre.

Jessica C.

Yelp
Great to have drinks and chill. Bartender was friendly and helpful in deciding on a craft beer.
google avatar

Evan G.

Yelp
Great dive bar for the area, with a good selection of beers, lots of space, outlets (including usb ports) along the bar and cocktails. The place feels welcoming and the bar staff is friendly. There are a couple tv's for sports. Also of note are nice, large bathrooms. No food to be seen, but I hear you can bring it in. Definitely a contender for after work drinks for those in the area.

Yelp
I might be the only person that has to think...like....really think about where to recommend happy hour after work. There are very few real "bars" around the PennQuarter/White House area. Just a place to be a normal human, get a normal drink (not a cocktail or craft beer) and have normal conversations w/o fear that your boss will be getting a high ball in the booth behind you! I really like not having to order appetizers, and really just let the beer and booze hit me after a hard day of work..... I felt this way...until Union Trust opened. Attached at the hip to Joe's Crab and bursting with that low key (almost surely) feeling of it's sister bar Solly's, Union Trust is just that...a bar. When you want a bar, some beer, maybe a vodka tonic, a booth, and somewhere to take off your tie (maybe even untuck your shirt....no??....to far?????...ok..just the tie) and not have to pour over a long menu of artisanal and beespoke creations. In fact, I think the bar staff at Union Trust would give you side-eye and just walk away from you if you tried to order more than a two-component drink (gin and tonic, whiskey and soda, vodka and soda...keep it simple silly)! If your boss makes twice as much as you, you won't run into them here. What you might run into are "team building" happy hours from the many contracting companies and young consultants in the area. You might get some Old Ebbitt overflow, but you will definitely get efficient service and a drank to get you from the perilous distance between work and home!

Yelp
The wow factor! My wife found this gem of a whiskey bar on 15st during our holiday weekend visit. While enjoying a perfect Basil Hayden Old Fashioned with the Rangers playoff game last evening on their large side TV the very kind bartender played an awesome Beatles mix for me. Get there soon for a great whiskey experience with an adorable bar and the best bartender imaginable.

Yelp
This is a fabulous, modern pitstop for a group or a party of one. The staff are great and attentive; and the atmosphere is very zin. Union Trust is 2-steps above a dive bar for sure. Although there is no food served here, we actually liked the concept. This is more of a spot for individuals that want to socialize over non- and alcoholic drinks. Makes sense since it is less than 5 minutes from The White House, other organizations, and sites to see. We arrived about 10 minutes before happy hour ended at 6:30 p.m. There were was a nice mixed of local employees-sport team & business casually- dressed individuals relaxing: we felt very comfortable and welcomed with those that gathered there. I can see bringing friends and family from out of town to feel like "not-a-tourist" before or after lunch, dinner, or a social activity. There is street parking. Recommend to park a few blocks away from and then walk to Trust Union to best navigate through the popular area that has some construction and heavy traffic too. One thumb up.

Yelp
Time to kill today before dinner so we decided to get out of the heat and have a drink. The Beer selections were good and everyone agreed that the beers were very cold as the bartender indicated. She was very courteous and friendly and provided us with complimentary bar snacks which were truly appreciated as we all skipped lunch today. We would indeed return..

Aabi L.

Yelp
Rudest servers and bartenders ever. So pretentious and refused to serve us when my 23 year old roommate didn't want to drink
google avatar

Jay H.

Yelp
Wow what a gem random exploring looking around and decided to go a bar, went to yelp as always and found Union Trust, it atmosphere was amazing while seating at the bar what do you know the owners walk in Doug and Albert what a amazing time we'll be going back before we leave.
google avatar

Jackson W.

Yelp
This is a great local bar. Good selection of whiskey and other distilled spirits. Staff is local and courteous. We happened in while one of the co-owners was tending bar. He gave some great suggestions for "local" ish places to eat and check out. Definitely recommend.
google avatar

Robert M.

Yelp
The bar is in a great location. Good for workers after work, as well as tourists. The atmosphere is tall ceilings and columns and dim lighting at night, with dark woods. The clientele here were very friendly and started conversations and made room for me. I see all the reviews calling this a "dive bar", and I think this is one or two notches above a dive bar. It's a classy joint, despite the lower prices. Adjust any preconceived notions you have accordingly. Bartender was busy, but was extremely friendly and helpful. The drinks were good and pricing was great.
google avatar

Alicia T.

Yelp
I TRUST this place, the only place in this damn capitol. Bartenders are down to earth and kind... which is what America should be.
google avatar

Ron C.

Yelp
I can't say I'm a dive bar fan in general but this place is cool if you're into dive bars. The bartenders here were cool when I came yesterday and the location is great since you're within walking distance to the White House and other great drinking destinations such as Joe's and Old Ebbitt. Compared to other places in the area, it was dead, which I thought was unique given the fact it's a laid back spot. However, other places in the area offer happy hour specials that start early which could be the reason why.
google avatar

Michael D.

Yelp
NOT A DIVE BAR. I mean, it's a block from the White House inside a old renovated bank building. Sure, they don't serve food other than goldfish, and they have $4 Miller High Life, but that does not make you a dive bar.
google avatar

Jonah K.

Yelp
Good location, open late, a worthy dive-ish bar :)
google avatar

Lianne R.

Yelp
Super friendly bartenders and a good place to grab a drink after work. Drinks were cheap at happy hour- a gin and tonic or vodka soda will only set you back about $6. Not the best place for very large groups of people, as the bar is on the smaller side and narrow. Good to note- this bar does not have food. So if you're snacky, be sure to grab something elsewhere before heading here. Would recommend this place- not a dive bar, not pretentious but a happy medium.
google avatar

Alec T.

Yelp
Great spot tucked away 5 minute walk from the White House. Great atmosphere. Great music. Solid beer selection. Bartenders are friendly and relaxed. Not a bad thing about this place! Of course, you gotta get a DC Brau.
google avatar

Cindy H.

Yelp
When we arrived we found a small bar that was perfect for our preference! Beer and Moscow Mule and lemon drops! Super laid back and comfortable! Neville served up a delicious Mule and shots. Definitely recommend this to you if you want a locals bar!

René U.

Yelp
Great service and food, bartender went out of his way to give excellent customer service!
google avatar

Krista T.

Yelp
My adult daughter and her DC dwelling friend went here a few months ago and the service was just as friendly a we experienced! DC friend was happy to find this place.

DashAK47 ..

Yelp
I don't usually review places but this was a wonderful experience worth sharing. I'm so glad we stopped by this place! Next time we're in DC, we're definitely coming back. This was by far the greatest! John makes genius cocktails and makes you feel at home! Thank you!
google avatar

Mohamed K.

Yelp
A great place to hang out with friends. I really liked the environment the other day. I'm glad it's not far from my job. Great people work there. MK
google avatar

Yelp
When standing at the White House, under dressed for the weather, Union Trust was the closed bar to me based on my route. What a great find. It feels like you're walking into a bank (because it was formerly a bank) and it doesn't have a flashy face to draw you in. Their bourbon selections were plentiful and Ridley at the bar was an excellent host. She made one of the best Old Fashions I've had and even suggested a rye bourbon that I liked (even though I don't like rye bourbons). That's more than just making drinks. That's listening to your guests and making a legitimate attempt to take care of them. It's a full bar and I'm sure the other drinks are just as good. Thanks for making me feel at home when I was a stranger in a new city!
google avatar

Julia J.

Yelp
Amazing atmosphere made by Pete and Tony! This is NOT A DIVE BAR. We don't do labels! Def worth going in for a drink!
google avatar

Cheyenne B.

Yelp
My friends and I were in the area after visiting the African American must. The Drinks where good in taste but weren't strong. A bit pricey but thts expected for the area. It had a nice vibe but i realized it i like a bar to have decent food, and strong drinks. If ur looking for that this isn't your place. If ur down for a quick sip and some light conversation than go for it
google avatar

Sabrina A.

Yelp
Love this place. I was in Virginia quite a bit this year for work and every time I took friends sightseeing in Washington we would end up here. They always treated us well, no matter how many of us they had to sea with they welcomed us in. The drinks were prepared well and everyone loved the service. I would recommend this place to anyone that goes sightseeing in DC!!
