The Best West African Restaurants in Houston | Eater Houston

"Like many Houston restaurants, United Sisters has an unassuming appearance alongside its strip mall neighbors. However, once you walk in, the smell of spices and grilled meats offers a hint of what’s to come. Find heaping portions of okra soup and suya, as well as more traditional dishes from Southern Nigeria, like edikaikong soup and afang soup." - Lane Gillespie

I taste many African food and this is the worst food I ever taste. When you go to a Hispanic restaurant or Asian restaurant you will never see a black person cook them how come is expanded cooking African food. I said I didn't want no meat in my food and it was a whole bunch of dry fish I will never go back there anymore. I had to put my own season in my own spice into the food to taste good so I don't waste my money.

Google
The food here is excellent. It tastes like authentic Nigerian cuisine . It’s sooo good. I’ve been coming here so long. Their oha, egusi, and vegetable soup, moi moi, coconut rice, jollof rice, plantain and vegetables are so delicious. The owner is also very pleasant. If you want some of the best Nigerian food in Houston then come here.

Google
Delicious food and you really get a family feel. A stand and a must if you're in Houston! Don't be afraid to ask questions! They will assist! P.s.They don't have ice, but you can ask for a cold glass with your cold drink.

I say the food was different for me but it was also a new experience. I asked our server Saker about his favorite dish. We got that and tried it. We also got some Suya, beef skewers. Spicy but flavorful. We got some jollof Rice with Plantain, fried Tilapia dish, Egusi Soup with pounded yam, We tried the stewed Goat in tomato broth. That one was my favorite. Everything was very good. I enjoyed it very much. I say one lesson by the staff for newcomers is to teach us how to eat the food. I say every culture is different, so having a lesson I think is vital when visitors come. I didn't know you put the fufu in the egusi soup and eat it. I want to understand the culture and respect it. It's all about a cultural experience. For one evening, I felt as if I was a new country. Eating their food and partaking in their culture.

Google
I love African food and this was an okay experience but I love the price of the meal. I got a side jollof rice and okra soup with beef. Okra was still crunchy and the rice isn't as seasoned as the Jollof rice from Cameroon. I will give them another try.

Google
A few people told me about this place and saying that the food was great and reasonable priced. The display appreared to be appealing. I ordered suya, egusi with meat. i am disapointed in the taste wasn't worth what i paid. I am NEVER GOING BACK TO THIS PLACE. I would chose another day to try but i dont want to risk it again.

Mandi

Google
Not safe for vegans. They told me they had vegan options, but the Egusi soup I received had fish bones in it. Either they don't understand what vegan is or they don't care. Either way I wouldn't trust any "vegan" food from them.

I went to a party where food from United sisters was served. The food was good, but everybody from the party woke up the next day with severe diarrhea and some people were even vomiting. I spent A good majority of the day running to the restroom. Everyone I talk to had the same experience. The food was eaten within an hour of pick up so it had to be something on their end.

Yelp
I was in houston during restaurant week and tried out different spots but none got like this one! The flavor of the spices was so on point!!!! Came here because I was craving goat stew and jollof rice. It's a mom and pops place and very laid back so you know it's gonna be good! Came with my sister and we got seated right away. My sister ordered the goat stew and I did the chicken stew with plantain and veggie. Order came out pretty fast and the flavors were so delish, it made me do a little shoulder dance!!!! Very authentic, very delicious!! I will for sure be coming back! Oh and very affordable with generous portions! I think our total was like $30!! We took several boxes to go!

Yelp
Best African food I've had in a very long time. The place is open with lots of space for a large gathering. The service was great and quick and the food was simply amazing. I know traditionally, African food is very spicy. This was perfect for my pallet. Not too spicy but yet all the nice flavoring of African cuisine. I will return and I do recommend this place.

Yelp
Bought the egusi with pounded yam. I asked for it to not be spicy because it was fir the wife and kids. They said no problem. Have a seat we cook it fresh for you. Got it home and it was same spice level as the others. If you're like me and like spicy it's great.

Yelp
I usually get Oha soup and coconut rice. They are delicious. I'm not a big fan of the ambience though.

Rachelle B.

Yelp
Attention Nigerians and west African people. It's just a bunch of Messican men cooking the food. It's not authentic Nigerian food anymore. Just not very good.

Yelp
Wowwwww wowww woww! All I need to say to sum the food here! The food is delicious omg I wish I like to Jack but I do not live in Houston. I went with my mother and sister, we arrived and were kindly welcomed. The restroom was not filled with people and they provided hand soap for washing as well. I ordered egusi soup with pounded yam and my sister & mother ordered the edikaikong soup. Our food took 10-15 minutes to arrive which was pretty good! Our server was so patient and kind as well. When I rated that egusi soup???? My heart melted. They really cool the soho with all their heart. They include love I'm telling you lol. The portion of soup to pounded yam was perfect as well, infant so much that I had to take the rest to go. I also tasted my mothers edikaikong soup and it was SO DELICIOUS!! So of course when I do come back I will be ordering that soup. But then again the egusi was just so amazing, it was really authentic tasting. If you're looking for a naija restaurant in Houston just come here. I rate this place 10/10. I will definitely be back!

Yelp
Oha soup was tasting somehow, I heard the jollof rice is the only good thing here... I tried it at a party and it was okay I would order just that next time

Ruben C.

Yelp
This is honestly the best food we have had. The friendly service, the amazing tasting food. I truly recommend them. We also catered from them and it was delicious. Thank you!
google avatar

Yelp
We usually don't get good service anytime we visit here, but we keep coming back because they have very good food.i will recommend this place to anyone that wants to eat good Nigerian or African food, but be prepared for the long wait time before you are attended to

Yelp
A friend referred me here for great tasting soup,he was right!I wanted local bitter leave soup and didn't want to make it at home! The soup tasted really good but the beef was ridiculously tough so I couldn't eat it.Good thing I reserved the beef for last,So I was pretty much done when I realized.Im sure they can do better!Maybe I'll go back one day soon. PS:I should have done this review looong ago.

Yelp
This is my second time coming here and I was again, utterly pleased. I had the edikaikong with pounded yam. I asked for goat meat and they gave me plenty of it! They do not skimp out like other places. The soup to meat ratio is perfect, as is the amount of pounded yam. The place was pretty clean and they provide hand sanitizer at every table. The service is also great! Our server was very patient with three very indecisive women. Highly recommend!
google avatar

Kim L.

Yelp
I've only ever ordered to-go but I'd say they have great food. My first time there was good the guy taking orders was extremely helpful. Favorite thing off the menu is the egusi soup with pounded yam.
google avatar

Yelp
My children and I just walked out after sitting there for over 10 minutes without so much as being acknowledged by any of the staff. I have been here several times with my family and I was just here earlier this week. Both women at the register looked right at me and did not acknowledge us. They never even sent anybody to our table to take an order. As many times as I have been here and as many times as I have spent money here, I will NEVER step foot in this place again. I absolutely refuse to spend my money at any establishment where my family is disrespected. By the way, Whoever that younger one is, You may want to inform her that looking at potential customers with an attitude is not a best practice in customer service, customer retention, or sales.

Yelp
One of the best fried tilapia dishes I've had anywhere. Plate includes bell peppers with onions, sauteed spinach and fried plantains. Comes with a bottle of water all for $11!! What a bargain!! Service is a bit slow as it looks like its family run so must be patient here. Waiter/owner was working the counter and the tables. There were about 8 to go orders so it seems pretty busy.
google avatar

Tonya M.

Yelp
So, this was my first time coming here and OVERALL I thought the food was amazing and had great flavors. I ordered the tilapia ( it comes with spinach, vegetables, and plantains), and I also ordered a side of Jollof rice. Everything was great but my only complaint was that the spinach serving was so tiny and the vegetable side shouldn't be classified as a side, because I literally got a piece of an onion, and 2 small pieces of bell pepper. Lastly, the lady who took my order had a bit of an attitude when I was asking her questions about the menu, but idk maybe that's her personality... but the food was so good, I'll give them 5 stars and I'll definitely come back again

Yelp
Ummm....so this place would prob be the ONLY reason I'd move to the south side! Disclaimer: NO I am not a Nigerian/African foods expert, but I am however an expert on food that taste good :-) Now that's out of the way... This place is the BIZ-NESS!!! It's in a small shopping strip & you'd almost miss it if you weren't really looking for it. No big fancy signs out front or anything. I got there in time to beat the rush apparently; bc I'd only been there a few minutes when a rush of folks came through the doors. Many who were picking up very large catering orders. I noticed immediately how clean they were; the strip it's in is older & may make ya wonder lol. The waiter brought a bottled water & a menu to the table. I'd only tried fufu & another dish a few times a long time ago & wasn't quite sure what to get. My waiter was very nice & helped explain the dishes. I went for a goat stew/soup dish. OMG 1st of all when my food was brought out, I was smacked in the face by this beautiful aroma of fresh spices! Then the bright red richness of the stew dish & greens served along with the rice almost made it too pretty to eat....ALMOST!! ;-) While I spooned the stew over my rice, I noticed the large chunks of meat. The goat was extremely tender & flavorful. The rice was perfectly cooked & the greens were oh so yummy. They had just a tad bit of spice to them, but not too much. The fried plantain that comes w/ the dish was perfectly cooked too. As I sat back in my chair, trying to make room for some oxygen, I said to myself, I should've saved some for later....that's when I noticed I'd barely ate half of the dish. The portions here are humongo!! My waiter even giggled at me because he saw the look on my face. I def can't wait to get back here to try more of the menu. This is a great place to go if you want to try something different. If you dont know what something is, don't be shy. Just ask & they'll gladly help you pick something.

Yelp
Amazing food at a great price. Very authentic Nigerian food. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for some home cooked food.

Yelp
Where do I start: This was my first visit to United Sisters. Everything was "ok". I ended up here because Mamaput was out of everything. The service at United Sisters was slow and unorganized. They were welcoming and polite, but lacking in many areas. There are many pros and cons. The pricing was VERY FAIR. Cleanliness, ummm lacking. Food, "ok". They loaded my plate with rice and held out on the other sides and meats. They had music playing and the TV on, that was entertaining. Will I return, probably not, but I'm glad I had the opportunity to visit.
google avatar

Ema P.

Yelp
While the owner is very sweet and fun...the food is really basic. All the components of my meal were ALL forgettable (jallof, greens, meat, plantain). i had this for a tasting for a wedding and really did not want the bride to go with this vendor...but...because the owner is so inviting, i didn't mind so much.
google avatar

Yelp
This was my first time eating Africian food and i was unsure if i would like it. Food takes a while because its freshly cooked to order. I enjoyed the plantains and rice.
google avatar

Laura B.

Yelp
We brought the the work gang in today. The food was new to two ladies. Every enjoyed their meal. We ordered a wide variety and sampled each other's food. I had the tilapia with spinach, and it was great. I tried the coconut rice, and it was super..
google avatar

Yelp
This place is cool. Prices are reasonable. They don't have cold beer though. The bottle is cold to touch. It looks cold, feels cold, but the beer inside is disappointingly ...warm. Even should you decide to suffer the indignity of putting ice in your beer; you cant, they have none. Also, the meat is very tough. They don't stew their meat in the sauce because it is so tough. Goat meat? Tough. Beef stew? Tough. Chicken? ...Sigh. Don't complain though, customer service isn't something valued here, so while they are not rude, they absolutely can't help you and your warm beer or tough meat.

Yelp
Awesome Goodness! This is the best restaurant in US. Wow! They can cook. Igbo Kwenu! Yaaah! Kwenu! Yaaah! Kwezuenu! Yooooh! This place is home abroad. Find out yourself...
google avatar

Yelp
This was my first Nigerian food experience and it was ok. The place was very authentic. We had a Nigerian friend take us. There were even tribe members having a meeting in the adjacent room. The food was not bad but none of it was that great. I did enjoy the goat over rice. No idea what it was called. The service was nice, but it just wasn't a place I'd go back to.
google avatar

Rachelle F.

Yelp
This is a very authentic Nigerian restaurant. I first had their food at a catered event and just had to visit their restaurant for more. At the catered event I had the snail which was very large in comparison to the escargot with which I'm familiar. It was meaty and hearty and tasty. Their jollof rice is delicious, it's probably my favorite thing. I've had the spinach stew and fish pepper soup and more. I enjoyed it all. The food is flavored with spices that I've never used here in my cooking. I couldn't tell you all the spices they use, but it definitely makes for an interesting food flavor experience. They serve bottled water to every guest, which I prefer over tap. The service is good at the restaurant, and the place is clean. They say you go where the natives go, and if that's the case, then this is the place to go because the place is always full of Nigerians - many come to just come and pick up food and take it home or to their event. And they even play Nigerian tv. I enjoy the owner, she is very friendly and welcoming. She greets everyone who enters.
google avatar

Amethyst T.

Yelp
I absolutely looooooove this restaurant! The plantain with vegetable and rice is so delicious coupled with goat meat. The gravy is rich and creamy so I pour it over the entire meal. The food is very affordable too. My only complaint would be service. There is a bit of a wait when I order in person. So usually I call ahead to place my order so it's ready when I arrive. I highly recommend this spot; best Nigerian food I have ever tasted. I think I might pay them a visit today. :) Enjoy.
google avatar

Stanley N.

Yelp
Hands down the best jollof rice in the SW Houston area. The portions are generous and the meat is juicy and well seasoned. Wouldn't go anywhere else for Nigerian food unless I had to.
google avatar

Elaine C.

Yelp
Customer service is not the focus. Although the food is good the meat to rice ratio is horrible, and very little vegetable given. You are forced to buy more pieces of small meat separately at $5 half the price of original meal. No one answers the phone, and service may vary
google avatar

Ngozi N.

Yelp
At first I gave this place a 4 star rating but after coming here the last couple of times, I realized that place has gone down tremendously. The service workers are rude including the manager who hung up on my face. The last straw occurred when I went to pick up a to go order and my bag had a roach carcass in it! Eeeww!!! Needless to say, I will not come here again.
google avatar

Priscilla O.

Yelp
Best Nigerian restaurant food I've had in a very long time. They taste like homemade cooking. I love this restaurant.
google avatar

B. C.

Yelp
I've had Nigerian food a handful to times, but I'm by no means an expert. That said, I found the food absolutely delicious: goat and spinach and plantains over jollof rice. The place is relaxed and friendly. I'll be back.
google avatar

Juli T.

Yelp
Clean considering the surrounding area. Got the goat and rice. It very good. Was not a fan of the plantains. They were not very ripe. Also, the plates in the restaurant could be replaced. Both of the ones I had were chipped.

Kenneth F.

Yelp
Terrible service which ranges from inattentive to downright rude. The restaurant itself was filthy. I have tried to give them a second chance but it's simply not worth it. Baffles me how they have customers. Maybe this is the norm for the quality of service back home and most of their customers are looking for a truly "authentic " experience. Surely there are better African restaurants in Houston.

Tee W.

Yelp
On top of the poor customer service and phone manner, all I got to say is, COUNT your suyas and or meat pie when you pick up your orders. You have been warned. I Will not be returning!!!
