"This bodega on the Hill (colloquially known as the Smelly Deli) has been frequented by Buffs for years, who rely on its 24/7 open hours and late-night eats like mozzarella sticks, gyros, cheesy fries, chocolate cake, and nachos. It doubles as a convenience store, so you can pick up hangover-preventing aspirin while you’re there. Crowded with coeds, it’s a spot that makes for great people watching and striking up conversations." - Rebecca Treon, Josie Sexton, Ruth Tobias, Nisa Sedaghat

Google
This place is perhaps the best deli in Boulder. Im not just saying that because I know the owners and I worked there for a couple years- but because it truly is the best. They have amazing sandwiches, a wide array of smoking products, and a large selection of snacks and drinks to choose from. I love the deli- if you’re new to boulder, or have lived there and haven’t visited- Go. You won’t regret it -jeebz

Google
Well stocked deli, bodega, convenience store and lunch counter with fun, old-fashioned bar stools. Open late when everything else is closed. Stock up on the basics, and also has unique items like baklava and Jumex. This is one of the best falafel sandwiches I've had in a while. Love this place!

Google
We were in Boulder today visiting our daughter for parents weekend. We went into University Hill Market and I went to pay for the drink my daughter chose. I told the gentleman behind the counter that I hadn't been in that building since I was in college in the 90s and it was Stella's Market. We chatted for a minute and when I handed the cash over to him to pay for the drink, he pushed it back to me and handed me the soda. It may seem like a simple gesture but with all the anger and b.s. in today's world, it really made my day and I am grateful for his kind gesture. ❤️

Google
I should have asked for a refund. Consistency is everything. The three beef gyros i got are tiny. Outweighs any good gyros ive gotten from here. Very poor english from everybody. Very little and burnt meat, look!

Whoever was working here today between 1:30-2:00 pm, was on the phone the entire time we were ordering and getting the food to go. It took 30 minutes to get my food to go. I wad the only person who ordered when i came in. The Gyro doesnt even have french fries and the shawarma was so poorly wrapped that it was dripping sauce everywhere. The paper they use to wrap the food is not waxed, get wet and stuck to your food. What a horrible service! Never again!!

Anisha

Google
Place wasn't very clean which would have been fine if the food was at least worth it. Ordered the gyro platter to-go and got the shawarma instead. Wasn't bad, looked delicious but the meat was a little dry and the rice, not very flavorful/a little soggy. Also, our total was more expensive than expected for a small neighbourhood deli. At least the serving was good for the price.

Google
I've been to Smelly Deli many times to get the essentials and they always have what you're looking for. Their deli has such a variety of really tasty foods that you crave all the time. I highly recommend their Falafel and Hummus pita wrap 10/10. The owner is always extremely friendly and will assist you however she can. This is a place that takes good care of you as a customer and has the care and quality that is missing from many other places today.

Google
Great Boulder Staple! I have been going with my family for many years. This place is a great combination of a fun grocery store geared to college needs and also a delicious grill for Gyros, Cheesesteaks, fries and more. Pro tip - fries on the gyro or cheesesteak.

Morgan A.

Yelp
Great location for a little bodega if i'd gone to school here and had a night out this place would likely be a pit stop on the way home. They have a bunch of great snacks (chips, ramen etc.). Didn't try any of the actual food but got the baklava which was good. People working were helpful and quick.

Yelp
Food Service We came here because the hill was packed. What a respite to find this gem. Great food but most important compassionate and caring service.

Yelp
This review is long due but if you are starving and its late night. You'll probably die of hunger until this food delivers your food which was through doordash. It took at least over an hour until food got to to the hotel. I dont understand why its so hard to deliver the food in a timely manner. The food quality wasnt the best either. dont recommend!

Peyton H.

Yelp
This place is there when you need them. They always provide decadent fries and flavorful Newports. They also love giving our dog treats. Say what you want about their cleanliness and service... they SLAY AND EAT!

Jake D.

Yelp
Very disappointed with my sandwich I ordered. I'll admit the bread was good and it was tasty pastrami, $7.50 for 2 slices of pastrami is ridiculous. Also the people were not wearing masks when I entered. I will not be returning.

Yelp
I have been coming here for years--this is some of the best food you could hope for, as long as you do not mind being in a relatively dirty environment. They are, however, either under new ownership or new management. I went in, and there was an error or a delay with my order. (It took much longer than normal, and I heard some conversation that suggested a mistake.) Things happen, but the delay meant that I was going to be late for a meeting, and when I explained that I might have to leave without my food, the husband more or less heaped abuse on me. Given his behavior, I would be afraid to go back. I miss the old ownership/management.

John S.

Yelp
Go to place on the Hill. Employees welcome you friendly as you walk in the door and the music sets a good vibe and makes you feel welcomed. I have been there dozens of times within the last 6 months and every time has been just as good as the last. The Food and drink selection is impeccable and had everything you could need. Great employees and customer service. My go to spot for anything I need. If you looking for daily necessities and food drop by, you won't be disappointed!

Cole V.

Yelp
Always enjoy going into this place. Friendly staff, good item selection, and good deli. Highly recommend stopping by to shop or get food from the deli.

Carrie F.

Yelp
ordered at around 930 and got my food at 1015pm. not too bad for late night ordering. I got a chicken shawarma pita (I'd never had this before) and my fiance got chili cheese fries. the fries came hot and not soggy!! very good chilli and the cheese was tasty. I liked the chicken shawarma a lot! it was just a little too salty for me. I love salt lol but this was nothing like I'd ever tasted before. I want to try it again as it did taste great other than that! just trying new flavors for once and it's a cool experience:) cant wait to eat again

Sari N.

Yelp
Zerooooooo. Not only the food is bad but the people there that help over the phone (guy) was super rude. I waited almost two hours for one dish and a couple of apps. I've never had or seen the worst gyro meat in my life. Puppy chow looked delicious compared to this dish. I called to complain about how awful the food was and the guy on the phone said that I was stupid and it's Uber's fault lol. Who's the stupid one ? Uber doesn't cook the food incase anyone doesn't know that but him obviously. He then hung up on me when I asked for a manager. I asked if I can drive the food back to them he hung up again. Please folks. I beg you don't go or eat at this disgusting place.

N D.

Yelp
If I can give this place a negative, I would! I tried giving this place many chances but they are extremely unprofessional. I walked in today and a guy behind the counter had his feet up at the desk. He didn't care to acknowledge my existence and kept his dirty boots on the counter. The time before that, the person wrapping the sandwiches was smoking while wrapping my food!! This place is extremely unsanitary and disrespectful. I wanted to support small businesses but after at least 4 horrible encounters in a row, I would never ever recommend this place to anyone!!!!

Jacob S.

Yelp
Foods good for a drunk bodega meal, open late and fun staff. Only downside is nicotine prices which aren't their fault and due to city laws

Judi D.

Yelp
The woman behind the counter was not wearing a mask! Hello?! A customer walked in while I was there whom she obviously knew and he didn't have a mask either. What the Hell people? Pretend to care.

Millie M.

Yelp
I loved this place! A great chicken gyro with hummus. I wish the music wasn't so loud and there were actual tables, but the food was good and the woman behind the counter was friendly. I was pleasantly surprised with how much I enjoyed what looks like a gas station. I recommend trying the deli! Interesting selections of pre-made and cooked food.

Yelp
A.K.A. - SMELLY DELI !! I think anyone who has hung out on "The Hill" or went to school at CU Boulder knows that this place has the BEST drunk food in Boulder. Not only is this place the only mini mart in the area that is open 24/7, it serves the BEST Philly Cheese Steak sandwiches and Gyros. Come anytime after midnight and be prepared to wait in line for one of these awesome sandwiches. They also have a whole menu of other sandwiches, but the Philly and the Gyro is what bring people there. Don't wear anything nice there, because they don't call it Smelly Deli for no reason, you're going to smell like it for the rest of the night. Make sure you add Sriracha to your sandwich to add a little spicy kick to it if you can handle it. It'll definitely make your sandwich.

Hannah E.

Yelp
They make pretty okay gyro and falafel wraps here. They're perfect for when you want to grab something to go but don't want to go into one of the 9364924 sandwich shops within close proximity. Yeah, I guess a gyro is technically a sandwich but it feels different in my stomach. It's the meat to bread ratio, I think. Anyway, it may be called the 'Smelly Deli' but I don't think the smell clings to your clothes any worse than any BBQ place or those Italian places whose air is 50% olive oil. Can you tell I have nothing much to say about the food? It's true. Nothing distinguishes their sandwiches from any of the other gyros or falafel wraps in Boulder. It's the same gyro meat, the same pita bread grabbed from the same mass bag, the same wilted greens. You know. One step up from fast food. Tasty if you're really hungry or drunk. But the place is open 24 hours, which automatically earns it kudos, as, I mean, what are your other options after a show at the Fox? Other options that won't end with your shoes being thrown up on, I mean? I pick the deli every time.

Maeva O.

Yelp
THIS PLACE HAS IT ALL! My friends always go in for the steak and cheese and it's arguably the best on the hill. The lady working the register is an absolute angel she's so kind and HILARIOUS. And the guys working the kitchen are so good about getting the food out fast so ur not waiting a while. I promise you they probably have anything u need and if they don't, owner will probably end up ordering it for the next time you come in. AND THEIR A PET FRIENDLY ESTABLISHMENT!!!

Alex G.

Yelp
The guys running this place are homies and it's by far the most convenient, cheapest and one of the tastiest places on the hill. I find myself eating here twice a day sometimes I recommend the Steak and Cheese or Chicken Shwarma platter.

Lynn K.

Yelp
Excellent gyro and falafel. Hummus great as week. Would give it 5 stars but grape leaves not the best. Never new this place existed. We will be back.

Mer T.

Yelp
Woohoo! As good as it gets! Walking into the infamous Smelly Deli, for the 300th time I am not sick of it. As a regular here are so pointers for your a 5 star experience at the Smelly Deli. 1. Walk in. 2. Smile..nice people. 3. Look at the menu 4. Don't be fooled you don't order at the counter. 5. Go to the cash register 6. Place your order a. Falafel with everything on it plus tziski and hot sauce (beware the Tahini is nutty) b. Dolmas. They great unless if you have rolled up a grape leaf with your yiayia yourself c. great fried food (better than Bovas) 7. Sit on stool 8. Talk to great people to who work there 9. get your food 10. eat it at the counter for optimal satisfaction a. be careful food comes out hot. 11. Say thank you! * this is the kinda place you can go alone at any hour of the day and just feel good.

Jack S.

Yelp
Great place to come eat and get something quick. You get what you pay for with the food and they always have what you need if you just need a snack. The employees are always very nice and quick to make your food. The only downfall is sometimes the employees get caught up in the minutia of things and forget to give you your food. Other than that it's a great establishment that I visit frequently.

Johnny C.

Yelp
This was my favorite place to get some late night food when I was in college went back in today and the nostalgia was real so many good memories at this place

Michael C.

Yelp
This and Deli Zone is the best food on the hill. Lots of food for cheap, and everything I've had is awesome. The cook will chat up customers while they wait for food, and they've always got Shameless playing on the TV. The gyros and fries are especially good, but I've never heard anyone say they got something they didn't like.

NoName A.

Yelp
Best falafel sandwich in Boulder. If you don't believe me, as for it with french fries inside. To die for!!!

Elena V.

Yelp
Unpleased with the edgy Cheba hut menu, I decided to walk around and stop by this place. The exterior reminded me of a bomb ass sandwich/deli shop in San Francisco, so I decided to stop in (and local is always better in my opinion). I got a 12" buffalo chicken sandwich for $8.00 and split it between my boyfriend and I. There was GTA V readily available to play too, which was funny but also kind of gross at the same time since I didn't want to imagine the grease hands touching the controller. It was kind of a wait for our sandwich as the dude's friend came by to chit chat for about 10 minutes... But the sandwich was really tasty and huge. Yum! The meat wasn't that great quality (breaded, frozen chicken with buffalo sauce) but it was still good. Gonna come back to try more.

Mack B.

Yelp
all the market is out of date... I got a pepsi bottle and it have exp on 4/14 it taste wrong so I had to look at the date. also the food is not healthy also one of the cashier was realy high. I mean we are in boulder but come on not at work.. you guys been in business for too long and still don't know whats wrong going on there.. have a good next year

Raemuz T.

Yelp
Love this place, do not love the inconsistency of what you get for what you pay for. Keep getting the Combo Plate and it feels like i get a different thing every time i order, sometimes with grape leaves, sometimes with tabbouleh, never consistent. Could be four or five stars if they'd figure out what they wanted in their dishes! Edit: Figured it out. Don't order from here midday, wait until late, the night crew is way better with the food.

Brady I.

Yelp
By far best falafel you can get in boulder. Great eats when you need to sober up, as they are normally open 24/7. Market is somewhat small but theyve got the essentials.

Jeffrey T.

Yelp
Today I went there and ordered a gyro sandwich and fries.went to wash my hands and I seen pans of gyro meat on the floor!!! open she said they just arrived and got put on the floor. Really. Open to this place several times and loved it this really disappoints me

Will C.

Yelp
Ahh yes, the deemed "smelly deli". Don't let that scare you away though, the sandwiches here are great, I highly suggest the philly. The people that work there are friendly as well. This is a great place to cap off a night of bar hopping in Boulder.

Mark D.

Yelp
This is the best late night place. The food is amazing, they have the best steak and cheese ever. They always have a good vibe going and good music playing. The staff is always in a good mood even when they are busy. They are open 24 hours and have every thing you need.

Bryan M.

Yelp
Many a mornings we ventured in for a philly accompanied with their special hot sauce, the perfect hangover cure. A staple of "The Hill" this is a must visit be it 5:30am or anytime of the day. back in the day you could buy single cigarettes for the craving.

Johnathon M.

Yelp
Love it here! Pros: Great fast easy food, perfect for a midnight snack when you're out with friends Cons: It can get crowded.

Kate S.

Yelp
Smelly Deli is a lifesaver! When you're up late studying (or partying) and feel like taking a quick walk, this is the place to get your snacks. Open 24/7 and fully-stocked with everything included in the college diet, this is definitely the best place to grab munchies on the Hill.

Luke W.

Yelp
I think this place may be open 24/7. However, it really only needs to be open from 11pm - 6am. Their gyro is a stomach lining anti-hangover miracle cure. They offer instructions on some sort of fancy wrapping paper eating technique, however, I don't recall. Stumble in, grab a gyro (w/ everything), tag the wall behind the store, and peace out.

Dean C.

Yelp
I had been here before during the time in my life where hanging out on the hill was cool. So after a long look in the new CU coupon books, I saw one for a $5 gyro, fries and soda, sweet! So we went, and ordered the chicken gyro and were told to grab any coke or Arizona tea. We waited, and waited, it took about 18 minutes(I only know this because it's the hill and you have to keep feeding those meters). When we finally got the gyros, I was quite happy. They were nice and hit with a nice portion of fries. They transported me back to the late night snacks in European cities. It's a good deal with that coupon, and even without, a gyro is only $6. Good deal, especially if you are a person with not much disposable income(college kids), or just cheap like me.

Cayla G.

Yelp
Gotta love smelly deli- they give my puppy treats everytime we visit.

Shanna D.

Yelp
They have great food but their ad says they deliver until 4am and they don't. This is the second time they have not had a driver to deliver this late. It is the job of the manager to substitute any neglected positions. My friends and I will not be ordering from here any more.

Carissa N.

Yelp
I love this place because you can get quick food or grab a Rockstar. The counter lady is incredibly friendly, and it seems genuine. It just feels like a place you could hang out for an hour and feel like a part of the staff. Very welcoming.

Jamie S.

Yelp
The "smelly deli" was once a great place with a gyro to die for. The owners moved to Florida or something and the new owners have tried to keep it going but they just don't have the same skillz. It is still worth it for the drunken food at 4 in the morning but it's not the same as it used to be.

Jimmy Y.

Yelp
I know it might not seem like it, but this is one of the best places on the hill, everything they make blows my taste buds away.

Hannah H.

Yelp
I honestly wish I could give this place fewer stars. The food is alright (good if you're drunk), and I admit that the place is convenient, but the customer service is so horrendous it's not even worth it. I sent my boyfriend in (while I waited in the car with my dog) to get two gyros and two sides of fries. I have him the $27 I had in my wallet just in case since I didn't know how much the fries were. He came back to the car fuming and handed me $6.03 and two gyros, no fries, and two drinks. He said that when he asked where the fries were they had put them inside the gyros and when he got annoyed they offered him two drinks rather than to just remake the food properly and when he complained they told him to leave. I decided to go back in myself because clearly we must have paid for fries if I only got $6.03 back, and proper customer service means you remake a customer's order correctly, how hard is it to just make more fries? They printed out a receipt for me saying the meal was only $13 something and told me it would have been way more with full sides of fries. Right, so where the hell is the rest of my money? They were rude to me as well and tried to blame my boyfriend for the mix up which is bullshit. Clearly someone over charged him but put the correct amount in the register so they could pocket the remaining money. It wasn't worth the fight so we just went home to eat our now cold and very overpriced, mediocre gyros only to find out that mine was also filled with onions, which my boyfriend specifically told them couldn't be in one of the gyros. Don't waste your time or money here.

Thuliso D.

Yelp
I am not one to write especially if It has to be about this place but damn. The clerk working on New Years was obviously on something. I witnessed him attack a innocent customer the second he walked into the store for no reason. He continued to not let the customer go even though he went all away across the street to get away from the bull shit. Several minutes later the clerk I guess wasn't satisfied and crossed over the street to scream in the guys face and then began to SPITTT IN HIS FACE TWICE!! wow thats some great customer service. The clerk was acting childish and as if he were a puppy sneaking up behind cops and trying to flip off the victim. It was quite comical I must say how immature the man working was. I have never had a bad experience until last night and I cant say i'm stoked on going to smelly deli again. The man deserves/will to be fired to say the least. Once videos are pulled the man will probably actually end up facing criminal charges.

orson D.

Yelp
Absolute garbage, I loved this place before the new owners came in and ruined it, the food is so-so compared to what it used to be and the service and wait time (25+ minutes for one gyro) pissed me off enough to write a review, Unfriendly and certainly not what it used to be when the smelly deli was the place to hit on the hill.

Nicolas S.

Yelp
Good food, but the service is lacking. They are sometimes real quick and friendly, and then there are other times where they don't punch in your order and you wait for almost two hours before the food is delivered.

Casey T.

Yelp
If teddy is working, you can guarantee your food will be amazing. Otherwise, don't even bother

Dave K.

Yelp
It's a 24/7 deli: gyros, sandwiches, cigs, coffee, etc. It's nicknamed "smelly deli," but don't let that scare you away. It's a solid late night food option or a place to grab a coffee on the way to the airport at 4am.
