University of Helsinki

After two and a half years I cannot give the university a passing grade. Teaching is top-down, no room for developing critical thinking skills. Grading is ambiguous: most courses do not provide a syllabus and grading scheme. In the very few instances a grading scheme is provided, it is not strictly followed and grading remains ambiguous. International students are second tier, and mostly brought in to compensate for the Finnish students, who enjoy studying for free. The student counselling is chaotic and is lacking when it is most needed. Many speeches that are given according to ‘1 university 3 languages’ are predominantly in Finnish and hard to follow for international students. Finnish language courses, cultural education, and integration into Finland is not actively supported by the university. This particularly struck me as every little thing is explained in detail when starting your studies, but the things that are actually useful are not supported and you are left on your own (which is fine, but it contrasts heavily with the set expectations). Newsletters by teachers/reseachers/experts/ organisations are not streamlined, expect 6+ mails daily about ‘very important’ student events -very chaotic. Finally, the university quietly pushed digital degrees while most students opposed this.

We went here for a conference, namely ISLS 2025. The university is very peaceful. The students are very helpful. The food that they provided was very healthy and good. People are extremely punctual.

The top-ranked university in Finland. Grand buildings and situated around Senate Square. The school is strong in social sciences (such as Economics and Political Sciences) and sciences such as Medicine. Easily accessible by Train and trams!

This university's administration still refuses to adopt an academic boycott of a self-avowed ethno-supremacist, genocidal state that recently declared unjustified war against another nation, all despite many academic employees presenting them with a petition to do so. Finland likes to present itself as a morally enlightened nation, more advanced beyond the barbaric United States, but it comes to the mythological beliefs about Israel, the university's administration is fundamentally as cowardly as its American counterparts.

The University of Helsinki is a top-notch school with a great library! Easy to get lost in the maze of buildings, but worth it for the beautiful campus. Suosittelen!
