"After 75 years in business, the U District’s iconic market University Seafood and Poultry will close December 31. Husband and wife co-owners, Dale and Jeanette Erickson (aged 91 and 89, respectively), are retiring and have no plans to turn over the business. The shop was well-known for its excellent seafood, which was once shipped to the White House during the Reagan administration, and has served the likes of Kirk Douglas, the late Seattle sports mogul Walter Schoenfeld, and pop star Yanni. It also gained a reputation for selling unusual land animal meats, including iguana, ground camel, and python, as well as an eel named Eli that was stuffed and mounted in the store." - Gabe Guarente

Fantastic butcher! Went here for our holiday dinner meats and we were absolutely delighted. Many options, both fresh and frozen as well as little goodies like spice mixes. Bonus they had a small yet well thought wine selection!

While some of the folks at the counter are not the most friendly, I don't go to a fish market to make friends. If you are looking for the best quality fish for a special meal, look no further than this place. Just had the organic Canadian king salmon and it was the best salmon I've ever had, having lived in Seattle since birth (mine).

Great Selection for a little hole-in-the-wall shop. The seafood all looked fresh and there were fish in there I've never even seen in other shops. Not well advertised is their amazing variety of other meat products. Iguana? Elk? Wild Boar? Kangaroo? Ostrich? Camel? Llama? Python!? Not what I expects to see on the price list!

As a burcher chef at Four Seasons hotel Toronto i had a great experience and the men was very friendly and knowledgeable. This place carry so many variety, I'm really impressed. Good Job University Seafood and Seattle!!

The best! Their quality and service are impeccable. Like stepping back into time with its old nitrogen pipe display cooler system: keeping everything fresh and moist. You can get everything there from clams and mussels to scallops to White Salmon and Monkfish... they even have quail eggs and wild boar. I've even seen alligator stocked there. We live on Whidbey island but we make a point of always stopping by the University Seafood and Poultry for the best product! Worth traveling out of your way for.

This is the best seafood market in the Seattle area, the best service and freshest seafood. Lines move quickly when they are busy, because the return customers always know what they want! Don't pass up the pickled herring, it is a special treat for our family during the holidays!

A Seattle institution that unfortunately is coming to a close. Sad, because the scallops, clams, crab, cod and salmon I got there for a Christmas Eve cioppino was all exceptional. They will be missed.

Best seafood market in Seattle: beats the supermarkets, and even Uwajimaya and Mutual Fish; fatty Salmon and Maine scallops have been awesome the past two weeks
