Find Barbecue and Five New Bars at Plano’s Legacy Hall | Eater Dallas

"An outdoor outpost of the venue’s brewing operation that brings the brewery’s beers outside into the container-built event space, strengthening the on-site beer selection and supporting live events and festivals held there." - Alaena Hostetter

So the brewery tasting room wasn’t open yet. Not a problem. They have about six beers from the brewery in the downstairs bars that are open, but they have twelve upstairs. A helpful manager and a super bartender, Manny, took us up to the third floor to fill our flights. Given the trouble that we put them through we had to try all twelve. The manager said that technically the entire building was the brewery. The tasting room is separate. They are also going to be doing a major renovation soon, so look out! We took our three flights outside for the view and met some terrific strangers that joined us. The stand out beers were the Black Sheep, the Idol Time Passion, and the Idol Time Agave Lime. They were all flavorful and delicious. The concept of a food and bar court with a giant screen projection television onto a stage for concerts and games is awesome! The tasting room is the crown jewel. It just makes too much sense. I hope that they continue to make great beer and never lose their personal touch!

Google
Had a brewery tour with Tom J followed by a tasting. Tom was very informative and you could feel his passion for brewing. That passion spilled over into the tasting as we tried some classic and innovative beers. Unlawful makes really good beer and you stop by and try some!

Victor P.

Google
Very nice place with good beers, we tried IPA and Stout and were very pleased. Indoor seating and a great terrace. In the same pavilion you have a lot of food options.

Cassondra M.

Google
Sampled the whole menu and every beer was delicious! Thoughtfully crafted, unique, and experience-giving. Got to do a tasting with Tom, and it was the best! Thank you USBC for the best time ♥️

Google
Great view from the top of the new dining hall. Decent beers currently on tap, but lacking stand-out options. Good fit for the setting, but not something worth seeking out.

Margie J.

Google
Outstanding beers - my favorites are the Antagonist amber lager and Black Sheep nitro oatmeal stout, but you can't go wrong with any of them. Don't pay attention to the bad reviews based on the hours being posted incorrectly. You can get any Unlawful Assembly beer at Bar Main on the first floor of Legacy Hall, even if the 3rd floor taproom isn't open.

Google
Came out of state. First time here. Met Tom the brewmaster. I loved every minute of it. I would totally come back. I think I’m going to move to Texas because of this place. Best craft beer by far. This is a must on your visit to Plano Texas!!

Keith S.

Google
The hours posted are for Legacy hall itself, the brewery on the third floor doesn't open till 6pm. The bar on the second floor also isn't open for lunch. I've tried to update the hours, I don't know if that will take (they are on the brewery website). It's good beer if you are coming for dinner.

Yelp
Location still great. Beer on this visit was bad. Service was worse than terrible. What I regret most is leaving a good tip. So, I tasted an amber ale and it was obviously oxidized to an unpleasant level. Generally, this is due to old beer and production methods that do not exclude oxygen from the process. Some of these methods are a tradeoff--but oxidized is oxidized and there is nothing you can do about it after it happens. The server disagreed that it was oxidized by looking at the glass of beer thus exhibiting her lack of what oxidized beer or wine is and how one would detect it. The the server said that it is a surprising taste, "The first time you are [at a craft brewery] here". I paid for bad beer. I left a tip for an insult and terrible service.

Yelp
Great service and an awesome location. Head brewer was extremely friendly and accommodating. Good summer drinks!

Yelp
Legacy Hall Brewery! This brewery is up on the second floor of the Legacy Hall food hall. You can check out the whole operation, which is built permanently into the food hall. You can see all their kegging equipment and fermentation stuff along the walls. They have a few places around the building that can serve up their beers. It's all a bit expensive, but these are the only beers that are available here, which was nice. The favorite was the pineapple wheat which was fruity and citrusy and amazing. The beers were all served cold, with a proper head on them. I came for a concert, so I guess they were just pouring drinks as fast as they could. The beers were the same price, so I ended up going for the stronger ones, which was pretty solid. The place is a great place to get plenty to eat along with a bunch of beers.

Yelp
Contrary to it's name, Unlawful Assembly Brewing Company is on the up-and-up, so no need to hide from the law. (Unless you are underage-then you'd better skip this one.) This fun brewery is located inside Legacy Hall and has all the inner workings of your childhood "Willie Wonka" factory, with a grown-up twist. I booked a tour for a group of colleagues and myself after work one evening. Everyone excitedly gathered around and prepared for the tour. After a quick signing of the waiver, we were on our way. First stop-a selection of three beers to choose from. Unfortunately, I was more concerned about getting my party of 17 corralled than noting the beer varieties-but I do remember one was chocolate flavored and another was fruity-pineapple perhaps? Our tour guide was knowledgeable and patient with the group as we asked lots of questions. As a non beer-drinker myself, I was more interested in the process of making it, rather than tasting the beer. He acknowledged that not everyone is a "beer person", making me feel much more at ease. At the end of the tour, you have the option to go down a giant spiral slide from the third floor down to the first. Several members of our group took on the challenge, while some took the stairs instead. I was one of the adventurous sliders, and lived to tell the tale. I will warn you, it picks up speed quickly and shoots you out at the bottom faster than I shoot out of bed when I over-use the snooze button on my alarm. Be warned.

Yelp
2019 Yelp 120 Challenge 2019 - #58 Unlawful Assembly Brewing Company is located on the 3rd floor of the Food Court of Legacy Hall. Unlawful Assembly has great beer flight selections and a beautiful view of the box garden below. Happy Hour is Monday - Friday from 3pm - 7pm with $3 Unlawful beers. Yum! You can order your favorite drinks from their inside bar or from their outside bar. I've been when the outside bar was open and when when it has been closed. When the outside bar door is closed them they will have employees walking around assisting with drinks and menu orders. My favorites beers are the Double Justice Imperial IPA, Blind Justice IPA, Rebel Faction, and Public Dissent Pale Ale. They also have delicious food items from their complimentary popcorn to their yummy lemon pepper chicken bits.

Yelp
This is one of the most unusual breweries I think I've ever seen. It's up on top of the Legacy building. There are tours but only on Saturday so be sure to come back on Saturday. The people here are really super nice and they gave me all kinds of good ideas for Good Eats in the building. Don't forget to look outside there's some interesting eating areas actually outside and a garden area as well. The bartender was super helpful and help me make a really great selection. Only 6:50. Keep in mind that the entire building is card only. That means no cash. Except you can still give a tip in cash.

Yelp
Arrived around 2:30pm on a Monday, check your website before arriving, said you were open from 11am. Staff stated you were closed. Very unhelpful and rude staff. Not impressed, drove a long way to get here.

Yelp
Fun local brewery in Plano and I'm bound to give at least 4-stars to any local craft brew place just for the sheer effort of doing the work. Their brown ale and passion pineapple are tasty. I didn't think the IPA was one of the better I've had, so I'm going to steer clear of those next time. Again, not because they aren't good - just not in my list of fav local IPAs. To be honest, we are spoiled for IPA choice in DFW. Taking the tour is fun and recommended. You'll be surprised at the size of operation they fit into a relatively small space. You'll also likely meet the brewmaster. That's worth the price of admission because it's clear he loves the craft and knows his stuff. We'd recommend getting a flight and trying several out. You won't be sorry! Unlawful is a great addition to the Plano scene and a totally fun place to spend an afternoon...particularly on the outdoor patio with a glass of brew.

Yelp
The idol time pineapple passion fruit wheat was to die for. Very refreshing when it was 100 degrees! The fact it's in the food hall is a little bit of a bummer cause it's a little bit of a pain in the ass to park at and walk in. The crowds are mostly on the first two floors so we had cooler and less crowded seating up in the brewery which was nice. Overall a win.
google avatar

Marjo G.

Yelp
This is a fun brewery located on the 3rd floor of Legacy Hall. You're free to roam around with your beer to make the next tough decision of what to eat among the several restaurants! I had the Passion Pineapple Dol Time ($6.50) which was sweet. The pineapple notes really stood out. There is indoor seating which has a cool library setting, the bar, and outdoor seating. They possibly have a live band / artist playing that night! Parking is plentiful at the parking structure.

Yelp
My boyfriend and I took the brewery tour on Saturday and it was so much fun! We don't know anything about beer so we really liked learning about the process and being able to talk and ask questions during and after the tour was very enjoyable. Cody and Dave/Dan? (I'm so sorry I'm bad with names) were really super friendly and receptive and even gave us food recommendations for the rest of the food hall. The tour is $15 per person and comes with a free glass and two free beer coupons, honestly a steal for the great time we had! We tried Idol Time which was very sweet and I liked that one a lot. They also gave us Agave Lime to try during the tour and that's not on the menu at the bar but I'd definitely recommend that too, super subtle flavor and pleasant!

Yelp
Tried the brown Ale and smoky brown Ale and really liked them both, especially the smoky brown. Really impressed with KC, who made a point of introducing himself despite the large crowd on this Saturday night. Will definitely be back. Recommendation for Legacy Hall in general: come early or come late. The crowd between 7-10 was pretty heavy, at least this weekend. There was a line of 30-40 ppl outside Legacy Hall at 7pm queued up for entry and seating anywhere for more than a couple of people was non-existent until late.
google avatar

Paige W.

Yelp
Fantastic beer and warm outside bar. Great for the season! Nitro stout and peachmonger are amazing!
google avatar

Yelp
Really enjoyed the Happy Hour pricing (3p to 7pm with $3 Unlawful Assembly beers). But apparently that changed a few weeks ago. Now it's 3pm to 6pm and $4. Wouldn't be a problem, but I don't really love any of their beers. While I enjoy Legacy Hall, I'd rather find another place for Happy Hour. Not worth battling the parking garage at this rate...
google avatar

Alex K.

Yelp
Great location. Very cool energy and mix of things with the food court at the lower level of the building. The beers available at Unlawful Assembly were great. I had an agave lime beer and loved it. Wish I had more time to try some more.
google avatar

Feng L.

Yelp
Very nice microbrewery in Plano, quite a few IPA options, I had a flight that was mostly IPA. They are decent but not meet my mark yet. The bandit IPA and dissent pale ale are bit on the light side, and the double justice is overdone. I like the blind justice the most but I definitely had better IPA somewhere else.

Yelp
I came here for the first time specifically for karaoke night -- not to sing, but to watch a bunch of drunk people sing MMMBop. It was a great night overall. Unlawful Assembly's located on the 3rd floor of Legacy Hall. They occupy that entire floor and have a bar, the High Bar Kitchen, and a decent patio area. The food menu's quite limited so if you're hungry, you're better off grabbing food from the other floors. We had the Chicken Tender Bites with Thai Sweet Chili sauce and the Beef Nachos. Both were amazing and tasted great. For drinks, my husband had the Public Dissent and I had a Sierra Mist and then switched to a Passion Fruit Pineapple Wheat. First off, the soda was nasty AF. It was warm and in a paper cup that obviously changed the flavor -- like when you drink out of a paper straw and after a while your drink starts to taste like paper, that's what I experienced. The beers, however, were much better. We're not regular beer drinkers so I won't speak like I know what I'm talking about but they were pretty good nonetheless. The Public Dissent was tolerable but my husband loved the taste of my Passion Fruit Pineapple Wheat tasted. He's not much of a fruity-drink guy, and I thought it was okay; great taste, great after taste, but ehh while drinking -- that's the beer despiser in me speaking. Going back to karaoke, we got there a little after it was supposed to start (7pm) and there wasn't much going on. It didn't pick up until around 8 and that's when people really started to line up to sing. The guy who runs it seemed pretty cool and even busted out into a Sinatra tune and got everyone into a groove. It's a small setup, but still pretty cool and something I might come back for. I don't know if it's only on karaoke night but it was ridiculously loud. To the point where you're leaving the place with a sore throat from shouting. Even if you're sitting shoulder to shoulder with someone, you're shouting and straining to hear them; the music inside is loud and it's worse when someone's singing. The noise level was kind of weird because it wasn't all that crowded so I'm unsure why they had it cranked so high. It was a pretty chill night and most patrons were there to watch a hockey game and only got loud when someone scored. All things considered, it's a decent place to hang out and enjoy a drink.

Yelp
My boyfriend and I have now visited U lawful twice, once on Saturday and today on a Sunday. The first time we participated in the comedy brewery tour--such a hoot! This time was just snacks from the food hall and casual drinks. After the first visit's tour, we stayed to try more beers and watch cliff diving. My boyfriend still raves about the Rebel Faction (Shiner is his got-to) and I have daydreams about the Agave Lime (not available off-site). The bartenders are always friendly, willing to offer samples, and will chat with you about the random sports on their multiple tv screens.

Yelp
Update: I initially really enjoyed this brewery. However, after having a second beer I was promptly told by the manager that my two drinks in two hours were too many for me. Not only did I feel I was being singled out for being a female, but also because this particular manager had not, as much as spoken to me for the entire time I was there. I can't believe the way I was treated, especially considering I had a DD. The manager at this bar didn't care about the safety of its patrons, but instead was only concerned with insuring that last call well before 1am, so he himself could go out and enjoy himself. I will not be patronizing this establishment again. For reference our bill was $30 total in a span of two and a half hours for 4 beers. My boyfriend never dealt with the obvious male preference, and I in turn was not capable of drinking two beers, from what I can only assume was a sexist decision making. Interestingly enough, I keep a breathalyzer in my purse and both my boyfriend and I blew under the legal limit. My suggestion would be to not frequent this brewery. They may have some good beers on tap, but that doesn't make up for their lack of customer service. This place has great beer and great live music. I highly recommend the Passion Pineapple Wheat beer. It has a smooth summer taste!

Drake N.

Yelp
Website said it was open on Monday. Got there and it was closed. Sign stated it was closed on Monday & Wednesday. Went back on Tuesday, stepped off the elevator and it was still closed. Three people looked to be having a meeting at a table. Paid no attention to me. Wouldn't go back if it was free. Texas arrogance...

Matt S.

Yelp
Beer is poor quality, not a craft beer location for beer snobs. The beer tasted like it was all from extract and no creativity with beer selection. I don't think they have added any thing new in 3 years! Disappointed on Father's Day for sure...
google avatar

Nguyet N.

Yelp
Pretty cool local brewery inside the legacy food hall. They do offer beer flights if you are looking to try different brews. They have happy hour which is always a plus.

Marie T.

Yelp
I've been here a few times with friends. It's located on the third floor of Legacy Hall, which most times is pretty calm compared to the super busy first floor. There's good seating around here, as well as a view of the box garden from the patio. The bar is two sided, so you can order from indoors or outdoors. You can order beer here. I like getting flights, which I am glad to see that they have. They also recently just opened a kitchen, so you can eat some food here (and ultimately not have to travel to the crazy hustle and bustle of the first floor for food). I like the hef the best! Overall, this is a pretty cool spot to check out at Legacy Hall. It's a more chill spot. Also they do brewery tours and trivia if you are game!
google avatar

Mango J.

Yelp
After a hot day shopping at legacy west. It's nice to cool off with a beer or two. Down side is it's only beer. But the micro brews are ok here. Had better but hits the spot
google avatar

Eleanor C.

Yelp
What an awesome brewery and amazing location! Plenty of room for lounging about or hanging out at the bar. Farmhouse is delicious and so is the Belgian (though a little pale)... overall delicious. Clean restrooms as well.
google avatar

Pooja K.

Yelp
Awesome place. We went there in the afternoon for the brewery tour and ended up hanging out there till evening. Small place with lots of beer options and decent food. Worth a visit!
google avatar

Kate A.

Yelp
It was small and hard to order drinks. Everything was cramped. The food downstairs was amazing but carrying it upstairs was difficult. Tables weren't taken care of. Never saw a hostess, waitress or any staff other than behind the bar.
google avatar

Angie C.

Yelp
Great spot for a craft brew and a day or night out that won't break the bank. You can enjoy your beer overlooking the Legacy Hall Box... watch the game on the big screen, or the free concert onstage. I visited in July and enjoyed a flight, was particularly impressed with their saison (can't remember if they call it farmhouse ale), and their Amber. Hungry? Grab some quality food downstairs and bring it up. Great concept.
google avatar

Claire D.

Yelp
Really enjoyed this brewery, although the seating inside is a bit lacking. Great balcony/patio overlooking the concert venue - there is also a giant screen down there so it's a great place to catch a game of your favorite sportsball! The brews are good and there's even a noodle joint sharing the space.
google avatar

Susan M.

Yelp
Came here for trivia night and it was quite packed. There was a nice patio area to sit in and they have nice heaters out there! Beers are good but wine pours are weak. I shouldn't be drinking wine at a brewery anyway
google avatar

Carmela D.

Yelp
As far as I'm concerned there's something rotten in Rotterdam going on at Unlawful Assembly. My husband and I ordered two drinks- a pale ale and a well gin and tonic. We were handed just a receipt with a total for $17. My husband's beer was only $6 so that makes a WELL gin and tonic $11! The fact that we weren't provided a receipt with a breakdown of our charges is shady to me and to charge that much for a well drink is absolutely absurd. If you like being ripped off, this is the place for you.

Amy S.

Yelp
Their name is appropriate because getting flights of beer for $3 during happy hour should be against the law! Their brews were solid, and the service was even better. Not my favorite IPAs, but their barrel-aged stout and pilsners were top-notch. The saison was pleasant, but the weather called for heavier brews yesterday. Everyone was so friendly, and this bar changed my perception of food halls (see my last review for a food hall in Raleigh). I would love to return and drink my way through the menu on a Saturday when they offer tours. The space is inviting as well, and the location on the third floor of the food hall is ideal. Who doesn't love having so many dining options literally next door, so you don't have to worry about driving?
google avatar

Paul P.

Yelp
Smoke Screen Brown Ale was great, but they wouldn't put the Longhorns on any of the 4 screens showing ATM. JUST WRONG! Jax was the friendliest bartender though.
google avatar

Howard S.

Yelp
I had two beers here while eating at the Legacy Food Hall on a Tuesday night. Both bartenders were very helpful and friendly, and I experienced good customer service. The bartender was nice enough to spontaneously pour me two small beer samples, as I wanted a beer line a brown ale. The beer I got was a very good craft beer and I came back up to order a refill. They are on the third floor (I was sitting on the second floor), and have nice seating areas around their bar. It was a good craft-beer experience.
google avatar

Yelp
Just took the brewery tour today...super entertaining and very interesting. These guys and gals are proud of their product and it shows. The beer is pretty damn good, too. Y'all hooked us, can't wait to see this company grow. Thanks for a fun afternoon.

Sarah D.

Yelp
This place had a great beer selection. Came in with my husband and few friends after dinner and was super impressed. They had a great beer selection and live music. Got a little crowded at one point but we were able to snag a spot at the bar. Bartenders were super helpful and guided us through their options. We met the manager and she informed us about all the cool new stuff that they are working on at legacy Hall and with the beer. Legacy Hall was like a huge food court with bars. which we didn't really get to enjoy yet bc we had just eaten. Being big beer lovers we felt that had to at least try the beer. Will definitely be back to try more beer and hopefully walk around more and try some of the food. Will definitely try to come on not such a busy night though.
google avatar

Kate M.

Yelp
Really loved the tour - take it and you'll have fun! But definitely have a beer for the tour, much funnier. The beers we tried were great, my husband and I really liked the brown ale a lot. The amber was great, too. The brewery is in a great spot at Legacy Hall and sell definitely try to come back next time we're near Plano.
google avatar

Scott K.

Yelp
What a cool place. The brewery Sits on the 3rd floor of this great collection of restaurants. I had a great meal down stairs and than a couple of amazing beers at unlawful. When I'm back in Dallas I will 100% hit Unlawful again.
google avatar

Gavin M.

Yelp
Killer brewery on the top floor of Legacy Hall! I took the comedy Brewery tour on Saturdays and got 2 beers and a complimentary glass!

Jon B.

Yelp
This a great spot upstairs in Legacy Hall. You can enjoy a beer while taking in musical events down below. They don't serve food but do allow you to bring in food from other places.
google avatar

Todd E.

Yelp
UABC as they call it is my new favorite craft brewery in North Texas. It sits inside the new food hall - Legacy Hall - in Legacy West. They make over a dozen brews at any point in time and I've had all of them. Honestly there's not a bad beer in the bunch but my favorites are the Blind Justice IPA and the Rebel Faction farmhouse ale. I also like the Public Dissent pale ale. My friends love the Idol Time beers which are lighter and more fruit flavored. The tap masters are very knowledgable but in particular KC and Roadie are always very friendly and even recall your name if you're a regular like me ;) The tap room is nice and has a great balcony facing the stage outside in the beer garden so you can drink delicious beer while listening to great bands. It's a win-win! They now are selling the beers at Total Wine and Specs so check you can grab your favorites there if you don't feel like doing the growler or crowler thing at the tap room.

Leslie S.

Yelp
I wanted a sampler flight of a few beers and asked to try 3 specific beers. The bartender wouldn't tell me what he poured when he gave them to me. And then gave me one I didn't ask to try. When I asked for the third beer I wanted to try, he said I would have to buy a beer. I told him I wanted to do a beer tasting of all the beers or buy them in smaller portions like what he was giving me little sips in. When my new beer came out with a glass with lipstick on it, I just left. The bartender was a unprofessional, all breweries have tasting samplers, my glass was dirty, and this was all around a bad experience. I will not be recommending this place to my friends or clients.
google avatar

Tom K.

Yelp
Unfortunately this is not a rating based on beer because I didn't have one. This review is strictly based on service, or lack thereof. Yesterday I stopped by the top level bar to order a beer. I stood patiently waiting for one of the two bartenders attention. I never received their attention. Not a "hello, welcome" or a "thanks for coming, I'll be right with you". It was not extremely busy at the time, but I was ignored. After roughly 5 minutes, a party of 4 came to the same area of the bar where I was standing, and the bartender came right over to greet them. So, apparently the bar tenders can exercise customer service skills when they're inspired to do so. At that point I walked. To say that I've had a lot of experience with breweries is an understatement, and lack of good customer service is my pet peeve. It can also make or break customer relationships - even in 5 minutes or less. Again, not sure what the bar tenders motivation was or was not, but treating every customer attentively can only help to make the beer taste that much better. Will try again some other time, and will update my review accordingly. Cheers!

Gary J.

Yelp
good beer selectioin and service was good. I only had two beers and will try others on my next visit

Samantha D.

Yelp
The brewery is great. It was the second time I've been there and have had their beer at a restaurant pint night. I really like going and supporting independent breweries, but this time my husband and myself had a really bad experience. My husband is Turkish and has an international Turkish driver's licenses. The bartender would not except his ID and said he needed his passport. She stated that it was TABC law. It is not. It might be a Legacy Hall rule but we have drank there before like I stated. The woman was extremely rude when my husband tried to buy a beer for his friend and myself. She would not except his ID and kept raising her voice about how he wasn't allowed to have a drink. However she accepted our friend's Turkish ID. She was extremely rude and had no patience with my husband since he doesn't speak perfect English and sometimes has trouble understanding new people. I like this brewery and their beer, however the way we were treated makes me not want to go back.
